Effective loss prevention throughmulti-layered retail security

Crime affects the profitability of retail businesses of all sizes all over the world, from small individual shops to large multi-storey shopping centres. Smallwonder, then that most retailers have made loss prevention a major priority.

While several practical measures can be put into place to limit the opportunityfor theft during opening hours such as addressing blind spots on shopfloors –the real key to bringing about a substantial reduction is the building of amulti-layered approach to retail security – during and after working hours.

Electronic systems have an integral part to play in this multi-layered approach. The installation of video surveillance has often proven effective. As well asenabling the detection of intruders after hours, the presence of video systemscan deter unauthorised access to vulnerable areas during opening hours. And,even greater benefits can be achieved through the integration and interoper-ability between video surveillance, access control and intruder alarm systems.

At Siemens, we understand that the level of sophistication and functionalityrequired in such systems is driven by the size of the business they cover. Thescalable products and systems we offer interoperate seamlessly to provide cost-effective security which will not impact negatively on the retail environment.

3

“Multi-layered” approach to securityAdopting common sense procedures –such as locking stockrooms and limitingstaff and customer access during stocktakes – is fundamental to a more secureretail environment. Through training, staff should be encouraged to remain ob-servant and to be on the lookout for sus-picious or unusual behaviour. Once thesekind of basic practices are put into place, electronic systems are the effective finallayer of security – both during and out-side opening hours.

Interoperability for allElectronic security systems from Siemenshave inherent interoperability capability, meaning that regardless of the systemsize, the components can interact and becontrolled from one central point at alltimes. So all retailers can benefit fromcentralised security management whichfocusses on their specific risks and priori-ties.

Clamp down on shopliftingIn any attempt to reduce shoplifting, pro-viding an active deterrent is a key objec-tive. This can be achieved by a combina-tion of article tagging and the overtpositioning of video surveillance cam-eras. And, when thieves are not deterred, the latest video systems from Siemenswill ensure that clear, visual evidence isrecorded, easily retrieved and readilyavailable to support any prosecution. Theinstallation of access control for offices, stockrooms and other sensitive areas willalso limit the opportunity for thieving.

Reduce employee theft opportunitiesIt is estimated that 35%(1) of retail theft iscommitted by employees. This involvesactivities that range from the removal ofstock from displays to dishonest handlingof cash and fraudulent till manipulation.Again, a combination of Siemens’ fixedvideo cameras linked to digital recordingequipment, POS systems and access con-trol of critical locations will provide aneffective deterrent to staff who may betempted. It also provides irrefutableevidence if they succumb to temptationanyway.

Highlights

Better overall security leads to an im-proved retail experience for customers

Electronic security systems can alsocontribute to an improvement inHealth & Safety performance

Use electronic security measures –combined with common sense prac-tices – to deliver increased protectionfor assets, staff and premises

Reduce shrinkage by reducing theopportunity for theft

Protect cash with physical restrictionsand interoperable access control andvideo surveillance systems

Improve out-of-hours security withinteroperable video surveillance/record-ing and intruder detection systems

Protect cashThe handling of cash is a major issuewithin the retail industry. It provides aconstant temptation not only for employ-ees regularly handling small amounts, but also for serious criminals whereversubstantial takings start to accumulate.Again video surveillance and alarmsystems, fitted with panic buttons tosummon the police, have a proven deter-rent effect.

Tighten out-of-hours securityMuch vandalism and theft – and mostbreak-ins – occur under the cover ofdarkness, outside normal working hours.Implementing overt electronic systemswill help deter offenders and implement-ing covert ones will help identify, appre-hend and successfully prosecute them.Siemens’ access control, intruder detec-tion and video surveillance systems areflexible enough to cater for differing lev-els of security during and after openingtimes. Times of greater vulnerability suchas evenings, weekends and public holi-days can be designated as needinggreater security and alarms set to triggervideo recording equipment or lockingdoors.

Improve customer serviceBy relieving them of routine security pro-cedures, the implementation of electron-ic security measures gives staff moretime for customers. So with a safer, im-proved service, the likelihood of repeatbusiness is greatly enhanced.

Retail security: good for staff, good forcustomers and great for profitability

Reduce Health & Safety risksUsing access control systems to restrictentry to certain areas such as warehouses, stockrooms etc., also can ensure thatonly personnel trained in Health & Safety(H&S) policies are allowed to proceed. This should reduce the number of acci-dents in the workplace.

Security – all around improvementImproved security is the key to a safer re-tail environment for customers and staff, but it also brings a measurable return oninvestment – with fewer losses, and im-proved customer and staff retention.

Deter theft with overt surveillanceOvert video surveillance systems are aproven deterrent. Strategic positioning ofSiemens’ fixed cameras will actively dis-courage shoplifting, criminal damageand staff theft. That’s because peopleknow that, not only are the chances ofbeing seen much greater, but that evi-dence is also constantly being recorded.Siemens’ moving cameras have the addi-tional advantage of being able to tracksuspected thieves throughout the store.

Reduce fraudulent insurance claims“No Win – No Fee” legal services havebrought about a dramatic increase in thenumber of “Slip & Fall” claims against re-tailers. If the entire retail premises arecovered by Siemens cameras linked toSISTORE digital recording systems thechances of a false, costly liability claimproceeding will be greatly reduced be-cause the retailer can produce evidence

of any incident. If the claim proves to belegitimate, a valuable insight can be ob-tained by reviewing the events leadingup to the incident. This can help imple-ment adequate corrective and preventa-tive measures.

Detect fraud at the cash registerBy linking them to POS data mining pack-ages, Siemens’ digital recording systemscan deliver clear, detailed images of tilltransactions in an instant. Till receiptscan be matched to images encryptedwith ‘date and time’ data showing whosold what to whom. In this way, suspi-cious activities can be investigated andany fraudulent transactions readilydetected.

Manage access to vulnerable areasSiemens’ access control systems can limitentry to stockrooms, offices and othersensitive areas of the retail premises.

Entry rights – based on seniority andworking hours – are managed via a cen-tral database and tailored to suit the ac-cess requirements of each member ofstaff. Doors are locked and only openupon presentation of an authorised cardto a reader controlling the door lock. Thesystem can also be used to arm and dis-arm the Siemens’ intrusion detection sys-tem therefore ensuring that high-riskareas are automatically protected at alltimes. This minimises the risk of person-nel forgetting to reset the alarm or thepassing of alarm codes to external parties.Integrated with detector-activated videosurveillance systems, it also gives addi-tional evidence-gathering functionality inthe case of forced or unauthorised entry.

Central and remote managementSiemens’ remote-viewing software en-ables live or recorded images to beviewed by specified PC users on the net-

Security systems from Siemens offer medium tolarge-sized retailers the opportunity to increaseoperational efficiency, by reducing losses andthereby effecting greater competitiveness. With interoperable access control, intruder alarmand video surveillance systems, cost-effective se-curity becomes a reality, building upon existing ITand security systems to provide central manage-ment of all the functionality, on-site or remotelyvia a CMS: from managing thousands of person-nel, customers, suppliers and contractors requir-ing access to various parts of the retail site tomonitoring entrances, exits, stockrooms, ware-houses and payment areas – with extensions andupgrades to the system easily effected. Staff man-agement, asset tracking and alarm response canalso be greatly improved with centralised verifica-tion and response to cardholders, alarms, etc.

05h00 – The first deliveries are due at 05h30. The staffenter the car park using their own access card to controlthe barrier. As they enter the warehouse using theirhands-free access cards, the alarm system is deactivated,at the same time triggering real-time video recording.

07h00 – The stock management system is showingproducts available in area J but only half the quantity isthere. The security manager reviews the video surveil-lance footage to investigate whether this is an inventorycheck error, a vendor error or pure theft. By reviewingthe access log and video footage, he finds out that oneof the employee’s badges was used to enter the ware-house and steal some stock. He will now speak to theemployee to clarify the situation.

Future-proof securityIn choosing the various Siemens’ securitytechnologies for retail premises, ownersand managers are ensuring the future expansion capability of their securityarrangements, which will be able to growwith the business.

Siemens’ IP-based systems facilitate thecentral monitoring of the access control, intruder detector and video surveillancesystems. In the event of any incident thattriggers an alarm, signals can be trans-mitted to a pre-configured e-mail addressand event-logs can be investigatedremotely.

When linked to a central control room, oralarm monitoring centre, Siemens’ sys-tems provide invaluable tools for the veri-fication of alarms and facilitate appropri-ate response.

Improve customer serviceVideo surveillance of a store and its tillswill achieve far more than simply moni-toring dishonest activity of staff and cus-tomers and recording evidence. By study-ing the serving of customers by staff, faults can be identified. Gaps in trainingcan be corrected to improve performanceand the service offered.

Staffing levels at tills and checkouts canbe monitored too, in order to keep wait-ing times to a minimum and ensure effi-cient deployment of staff.

work. This means, for instance, that man-agers can review images to ensure theirdepartments are running smoothly orcheck that areas are free from hazards.Users can also be authorised to accessimages remotely. Managers can thereforecheck stocktaking procedures, ensurethere are no breaches of security orcheck that opening times are properlyobserved by staff – even when the man-agers themselves are not on the premises.

Improve out-of-hours safety for staffWith the growth of out-of-town retailcentres, many medium to large compa-nies are now in more isolated locationsand have extended opening hours. Thismakes them more attractive to the seri-ous criminal.

To improve security – and safety of staff– the first line of action is to ensure thatthe outer perimeter of the premises issecure. Siemens’ access control systemsallow entry to the car park to be con-trolled outside normal opening hours bygranting access to only authorised cardor tag holders.

Siemens’ intruder detection systems en-able the various areas of the premises(main store, warehouse, offices etc.) tobe monitored independently. This meansthat offices can be under alarm while themain store is not. Detectors can be linkedto specified verification zones, activatingaudio or video alarm verification immedi-ately after an alarm. When the exterior ofthe building is monitored by Siemens’day-night cameras, staff will undoubtedlyfeel safer and more secure.
