RESUME GUIDE

A resume is a one page advertisement to a potential employer or graduate school. Studies show that resumes are initially reviewed for an average of 20 seconds. Therefore, keep it readable and relevant.

This guide includes explanations of potential resume sections as well as samples of content. Each resume sample is meant to provide ideas. Pieces and parts, including design and formatting ideas as well as content, can be synthesized together to fit your needs.

RESUME HEADINGS The heading includes complete contact information, including a professional email and a phone number with a professional sounding voicemail. Below are a few sample headings to give you an idea of potential formatting:

POTENTIAL RESUME SECTIONS Each resume is unique. Below are descriptions of some of the most common resume sections. You should only use sections that are relevant to you and make sense in the context of the particular position that you are seeking.

Profile This section, near the top of your resume, includes the highlights of your top accomplishments and skills. These should be selected so that they highlight your relevant experience/qualifications.

Education For entry-level job seekers, this is sometimes toward the top of the resume. Include your school, location, degree, major(s), minor(s), date of graduation and GPA (optional). GPA can be broken into major GPA and cumulative GPA. Test scores, if exceptional, can be listed as well. List your study abroad experience here also. Freshmen and sophomores may choose to include their high school information.

Honors Honors or awards received from athletics, academics, service or work experiences can be listed. Make sure these are relevant (i.e., most of your high school awards are not).

Relevant Courses This section is often used when applying to graduate programs, to receive scholarships or fellowships, or when coursework provided specialized knowledge or skills for a position.

Experience List employer name, location, job title and dates of employment. Write descriptions of each experience using action verbs. Do not use personal pronouns (such as “I”). List the most recent experiences first and tailor the list based on the position you are seeking. Experience could be divided into multiple sections (examples include: teaching experience, industry experience, leadership experience).

Activities This could include any number of extracurricular activities. Avoid overwhelming the page with this section unless all your activities specifically relate to the position you are seeking. Be sure to highlight any leadership roles you have or held. Include the organization, your job or title, and dates of involvement.

Volunteer Similar to the experience section, include the organization name and location, your volunteer title and dates of service. Depending on your level of involvement you may list a bullet or two describing the skills you obtained in this role.

Skills This section typically lists technical skills, such as programming languages or software proficiency, language proficiency and laboratory skills as applicable.

You might also consider… Research Publications (or Thesis) Memberships or Affiliations Athletics

RESUME TIPS/CHECKLIST Do not exceed one page (set margins to 1” and font sizes between 10 and 12 point).

If you use a template with graphics, make sure your content is strong. Substance is more

important than looks.

Do not use personal pronouns (I, me, you, they, we, etc.).

Do not include personal information such as birthdate or a photograph.

Do not include references on your resume (this should be a separate document).

Do not use abbreviations (extremely common abbreviations, such as months, are acceptable).

If listed, do not round GPA. Both cumulative GPA and Major GPA can be listed if major GPA is

significantly higher. Test scores can also be included.

Do include numbers and quantities as much as possible.

Vary your word choices and do not repeat phrases.

List your study abroad experience in your education section.

Keep formatting consistent throughout (bolding, italics, font, spacing).

Verb tenses should be in the present tense for current jobs and in the past tense for past jobs.

You might tailor your resume to each position, adding or omitting sections and experiences as

needed.

Use keywords from the job description and company information in your resume text.

Thoroughly review for spelling and grammar mistakes.

Update your resume often with accomplishments, experiences, etc.

Upload resume to Handshake to allow employers to search for you
