Bird researcher Sara Ry- ding of Deakin University in Aus- tralia in the research said, "A lot of the time when climate change is dis- cussed in mainstream media, people are asking 'can humans overcome this?', or 'what technology can solve this?'." "It's high time we recognised that animals also have to adapt to these changes, but this is occurring over a far shorter timescale than would have occurred through most of the evolutionary time," added Ryd- ing. "The climate change that we have created is heaping a whole lot of pressure on them, and while some species will adapt, others will not," continued Ryding. Ryding noted that climate change is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that's been occurring progressively, so it is diffi- cult to pinpoint just one cause of the shapeshifting. But these changes have been occurring across wide ge- ographical regions and among a di- verse array of species, so there is lit- tle in common apart from climate change. Strong shapeshifting has particularly been reported in birds. PM must tell how farmers'income will double: GorayaSHIV KUMAR SHARMAKARNAL: Congress Party's farmer leader Inderjit Singh Goraya, whiletalking to reporters in the District Court Complex, Karnal said that thePrime Minister has been saying for the last 7 years that by 2022, thefarmers' income will double. This promise is also going to prove to be

just a jumla because thegovernment Has madevery little increase in theMSP of crops for thecoming 2022. The cost ofcultivation has more thandoubled during this peri-od, due to which the in-come of the farmers isdecreasing every year.Farming is proving to bea loss-making deal, dueto which the farmer isconstantly being bur-dened with debt, which

has made life difficult. The number of suicides is increasing every year, which is a matter of concern. If the BJP government had been a littleserious towards the farmers, it would have given the crop price as perthe recommendations of the Swaminathan Commission as promisedbefore the elections, then in seven years the farmer could have beenable to stand on their feet which the government did not allow. InderjitGoraya said that the government is imposing policies and laws pro-moting capitalism on the farmers at the cost of farmers, due to whichthe distrust of the government is increasing, the example of which isin front of the government in the form of farmers' movement. The gov-ernment should increase the price of wheat by Rs 400 per quintal in-stead of Rs 40. By looking at the farmers movement with respect, thegovernment must solve these problems peacefully and rationally. Ad-vocate Gurtej Singh. Vikas Sadhu Pradeep Kamboj and other lawyerswere also present.

tive and police officers showed restraint and har-mony, did not upset the heart of any side. The roleof farmers along with the administration and policein this case was commendable. Now the leaderminister who is taking credit after the matter is overis wrong. It is wrong to take credit in every respect. Thefarmers have shown a big heart. They deservecongratulations. The world's largest adult vaccination program has preparedIndia for a grand leap forward in Atma-Nirbharta

Seventy-five years afterattaining freedom fromforeign rule, our

search for freedom of a dif-ferent kind continues-thistime the country is seekingfreedom from an invisible in-vader-the SARS-CoV-2,which has been ravagingthe country for the past 20months. From what weknow about this deadlyvirus, it can be tamed by fol-lowing Test-Track-Treat andvaccination strategy at ad-ministrative level and en-couraging adherence toCovid-Appropriate Behaviorthrough community partici-pation.

But to eliminate it, weneeded a lasting immunityagainst it. Indian scientistsand agencies have pushedthe physical and technical

boundaries to developCOVID-19 vaccines within arecord period and on 16January 2021, our Hon'blePrime Minister launched theworld's largest adult vacci-nation program by introduc-ing two "made in India"COVID-19 vaccines. The in-troduction of India-madevaccines within weeks of theglobal introduction ofCOVID-19 vaccines wasalso the beginning of an ex-citing period in the publichealth history of India.

Perhaps, this is one ofthe very few upsides of theCOVID crisis-we have hadthe rare opportunity to builda healthcare infrastructureon mission mode that will domuch more than just leaveus stronger for future on-slaughts of the kind we are

currently facing. Under the leadership of

our Prime Minister, ShriNarendra Modi, the countryhas been investing a greatdeal of its resources instrengthening the health-care system since March2020 when the first fewCOVID cases were detect-ed. Alongside, an entrepre-neurial ecosystem for vac-cine research and develop-ment, developing new diag-nostics techniques as wellas treatment modalitieswere put in place. MissionCOVID Suraksha madespecial and proactive effortsto provide financial andtechnical assistance to theestablished vaccine manu-facturers for ramping up themanufacturing capacity andstart-up biotech units for ex-

ploring the new vaccineplatforms and product de-velopment.

As a result, in less thana year, vaccines were devel-oped, tested, approved anda nationwide immunizationprogram was rolled out.Within couple of months, thecountry became self-reliantin the production of masks,PPE kits, testing devices, etc. that were critical to ourfight against COVID-19.These COVID sensitive in-terventions created an en-abling environment in fightagainst COVID-19 virus.

To further acceleratevaccination coverage, theHon'ble Prime Minister's de-cision to make vaccine freefor all eligible beneficiariesat public health facilitiesacross India demonstrated

a strong political commit-ment at the highest level to-wards public health. It is re-markable that in a matter offew months, India has ad-ministered over 750 milliondoses of COVID-19 vac-cines, among the highestglobally. Currently, over 1.1million beneficiaries are re-ceiving the COVID vaccinesin a single day. I strongly be-lieve that it is the people'swholehearted participationin the vaccination programthat has made it such a suc-cess. The Covid-19 vacci-nation drive, which aims tovaccinate the entire popula-tion of the country by theend of this year, is alsoyielding valuable lessons forfurther refining our universalimmunization program andother health initiatives. Our

ever-expanding Covid-19vaccination program canbecome an effective entrypoint for delivering primaryhealthcare, nutrition, water, and sanitation related serv-ices to our citizens. The rap-id augmentation of ourhealthcare facilities acrossthe country will help us en-sure that everyone has eq-uitable access to qualityhealthcare. Our healthcareand frontline workers haveworked with great commit-ment and dedication toachieve this momentousfeat of having administered75 crore doses of COVID-19vaccines ---- a fitting tributeto our 75 years of "Azadi kaAmrit Mahotsav".

The world's largest adultvaccination program is alsostrengthening India's re-

solve toward Atmanirbharta. The Atmanirbharta has to beinclusive and embrace com-plementary collaborationsfor essential technology andleverage the essential inter-dependence across the sec-tors and countries. Vaccineresearch and developmentand manufacturing are simi-lar to rocket science and nu-clear program. A lot of sci-entific, manufacturing, tech-nology and quality assur-ance processes are in-volved in this. There istherefore a need to createan ecosystem that encour-ages enterprise and domes-tic production of vaccines, including required raw ma-terial, using advanced tech-nologies. For this to happen, sustained strategic invest-ments have been made in

research and development, enabling collaborations andpolicy support to achievethe goal and sustain them.

The revolutionary vac-cine program (both develop-ment and implementationaspects) and disease sur-veillance measures forCOVID-19 will have a long-term impact on India's im-munization program.

The pandemic hasforced us to experience thefragility of life and to pay ur-gent attention to healthcare. It has also taught us that weno longer have the luxury oftime to wait, experiment, and take small steps to buildour healthcare ecosystem. The moment has come forthe great leap forward-- andthe country is prepared todo that.

Waste notIt’s better to bin it than bag it. We generate mil-

lions of tonnes of biodegradable solid and liquidwaste every day. What do we do with those large

mounds of rot? Some small towns are showing us away — Ambikapur in Chhattisgarh, Indore in Mad-hya Pradesh, Karad, Nashik or Ahmednagar in Ma-harashtra, to name a few. They are converting theirwaste into compost and selling it to farmers. Maha-rashtra has even begun to brand its city compost as‘Harit’. The key lies in segregation of our waste, andin turn, our behaviour. Solid and wet waste on oneside, plastic and medical waste on the other side. Ittakes 21 to 30 days to convert it into organic ma-nure. We don’t do it. Worms, animals and microor-ganisms do it. What we can do is responsibly man-age our waste.

What began in Vellore, Tamil Nadu, with C.Srinivasan’s ‘Zero Waste Management’ model, orwhat he calls the Solid and Liquid Resource Man-agement, is now slowly catching up. Most states arefloating their policies for the urban local bodies, buttheir actions aren’t being matched by investments.

The Centre’s two thematic focus areas match:Clean India Mission and improving soil health.Which means the Centre can incentivize both — theurban local bodies and farmers or their collectives.India would do well to give city compost a bigthrust: at least half our waste could go back into ourfatigued soils as compost and drastically improve or-ganic content. Degrading soil fertility is playing hav-oc with yields in most parts of our country and isconnected to the climate and nutrient cycle.

Early studies on the outcomes — such as in theGIZ-Nabard supported ProSoil programme which iscurrently in vogue in a few districts of MadhyaPradesh and Maharashtra — show that urban com-post is not only good, but its affordability in the lightof rising chemical fertilizer prices is also pushing thedemand from among the small farmers, primarilythose who do not have livestock for organic manure.Just this one factor — improving organic carbon inthe soil — can marginally enhance yields.

India has huge and growing neighbourhood mar-kets for farmers as the Karad model shows. The mu-nicipality of this small Satara town, home to the for-mer chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan, converts itswaste into compost and sells it directly to the neigh-bourhood farmers from its disposal facility. Sincethe fertilizer companies have a mandate to sell or-ganic matter along with chemical and inorganic soilfeed, there’s going to be interest in this sector.

Easter, 1916I have met them at close of day Coming with vivid facesFrom counter or deskamong grey Eighteenth-centuryhouses.I have passed with anod of the head Or polite meaninglesswords, Or have lingered awhile and said Polite meaningless words,And thought before I had done Of a mocking tale or a gibe To please a companionAround the fire at the club, Being certain that they and I But lived where motley is worn: All changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born.

J-K: Women overcome challengesto pursue their goals

Kashmiri women have beenmaking serious efforts to over-come challenges in the region

and have proven themselves in a vari-ety of sectors. Their success showsthat despite living in a terror affectedarea strong efforts can make peoplemarch ahead.

From becoming pilots to treatingpatients or heading an administration, these women have gained success invarious fields. Nearly 90 per cent ofwomen in Kashmir used to believethat becoming an entrepreneur oraiming high was very challengingmostly due to the pressure exerted bysociety and the fear of the gun, a sur-vey conducted by an NGO prior tothe abrogation of Jammu and Kash-mir's special status had revealed. However, women in Kashmir duringthe past few years have overcome theobstacles and have proven to theworld that the sky is the limit forthem, a news website Daily Sikh re-ported on Monday.

From ancient times women inKashmir have always played a pivotalrole, powerful leaders like QueenDidda, who ruled over almost thewhole of what is Kashmir today, toKrishna Hutheesing, Vijaya LakshmiPandit, and Begum Akbar Jahan Ab-dullah, Kashmiri women have beenthe inspiration for the generationnext, Harjap Singh wrote for DailySikh. In 2000, Nusrat Jahan, born inSouth Kashmir's Dadoora village inPulwama district quit her job as acommunity organiser in Jammu De-velopment Authority to start her owncut-flower business. Nearly twodecades ago she started a small busi-ness that has turned into a multi-croreventure with an annual turnover of Rs

2 crore. Nusrat has come over a lot ofchallenges as when she started theflower market was not in the boom. But now, in the last two decades, a lothas changed in Kashmir and the de-mands for flow demand for freshflowers has increased.

In Kashmir, for women to startand lead the business is not usual asdoing business is common for men inthe region but not for women. How-ever, Jahan entered into a men-domi-nated field and gained immense prof-it. She has proven beyond any doubtthat women can perform better.

Another woman, Arifa Jan pur-sued a two-year Craft Managementand Entrepreneurial Leadership pro-

gramme years back and received ascholarship by Craft Development In-stitute. Through this, she went to Kyr-gyzstan for specialised training, ac-cording to Daily Sikh. Later, shecompleted her masters and startedworking on the Namada--a traditionalcarpet made by rolling and pressingwool-- revival project, setting up herfirst business unit at Srinagar'sSekidafar locality in 2012. In 2014,the US State Department awarded hera US Citizenship Eligibility Certifi-cate for Women EntrepreneurshipProgramme. Later, when Arifa re-turned from the US, she opened twomore units in Srinagar's Noorbaghand Nawa Kadal localities. So far, she

has trained over 100 and employed 25women. Arifa also increased thewages of the artisans from Rs 175 toRs 450 per day. In 1994, CaptainSami Ara Surury earned her Commer-cial Pilot License and became the firstKashmiri woman to fly commercialplanes. She hails from Sumbal Son-awari area in North Kashmir's Bandi-pora district Captain Sami's familywanted her to become a doctor butshe went found her own way. Initial-ly, Captain Sami applied for a job as acabin crew and went on to become acommercial pilot. It was not easy forher as during that time the terror ac-tivity was at its peak in Kashmir. Sheis presently an Airbus pilot, an inspi-ration to all those young women whodream and aim to fly high. AnotherKashmiri girl named Dr RuvedaSalam inspired women in the regionas she cleared the UPSC two times. In2013, Dr Ruveda became the firstKashmiri woman to clear the IPSexam. Later, she cleared IAS too. DrRuveda hails from north Kashmir'sKupwara district. She completed herMBBS from Government MedicalCollege, Srinagar and then startedpreparing for civil services. In 2018,President Ramnath Kovind awardedNari Shakti Puraskar to MehvishMushtaq to create an android appcalled 'Dial Kashmir. She became thefirst Kashmiri to do something likethis. Mehvish pursued B.E in Com-puter Science from SSM College ofEngineering and Technology in Pattanarea of Baramulla district in northKashmir. These women like manyothers in Kashmir have proven thatthe roaring of guns, threats and intim-idation by terrorists can't deter some-one from pursuing their goals.

Hindi is not only India's identity as a language but it isalso a true communicator of our culture and traditions

Hindi is the mother tongue of India, weproudly believe that we are Hindispeakers, the voice of unity in diver-

sity resonates with Hindi. It is the duty ofthe people to respect this language, it is be-lieved that language is a means of ex-pressing emotions and with this means theworld can be changed. Hin-di is not just a language, it isa vast culture and thereforelearning it is not just a mat-ter of language knowledge.Due to the need for change, when everything is chang-ing, then obviously the lan-guage will also change. This change in language islinked to the change in ourculture and for its develop-ment we have to look at thechange in society as well.

Hindi is not only India's identity as alanguage but it is also a true conductor andcommunicator of our culture and traditions. It is a very simple and easy language aswell as a scientific language. That is whythe number of people in the world whospeak, understand and like Hindi is veryhigh. It is the third most spoken languagein the world. It acts as a bridge between ourancient knowledge culture and modern de-velopment. The home of Hindi has a dis-tinct identity in our world. It brings us honorand glory all over the world, because theHindi language reflects the culture and cus-toms of our country. On 14 September1949, the Constituent Assembly unani-mously decided that Hindi would be the of-ficial language of India. At the request ofthe Rashtrabhasha Prachar Samiti WardaEvery year since 1953, September 14 hasbeen celebrated all over India as Hindi Day.

As well as being the official language

of the Union of India, Hindi is also the ma-jor official language of eleven states andthree Union Territories. At the same timeEnglish is also dominating our country. Dueto the growing influence of English, Hindispeakers are now considered as illiterateor like Guar. Ironically, in our own country,

we are not able to give the Hindi lan-guage the respect that we are get-ting today from English. Today's newgeneration is moving away from Hin-di. The main reason for this can beattributed to Western culture. On theother hand, Hindi is moving in theright direction abroad. Hindi is beingrespected in different countries. Inmany foreign universities, local stu-dents are learning Hindi, while in ourHindi-speaking nation, parentsthemselves are seeing Hindi as asign of backwardness. Language is

basically a medium of expression. In an-cient times, language was communicatedonly through oral tradition, then graduallylanguage was expressed in writing on cop-per plates and stones. . In 1868 AD, abook entitled The Golden Sutras of theTang Dynasty was published in China. Theliterary history of Hindi is found in thetwelfth century. Since then, Hindi has alsobeen started spreading through TV, radioand internet. However, we are not able togive Hindi the place it really deserves. Thedevelopment of any language depends onits literature so in today's modern and sci-entific age work in Hindi in fields like med-ical engineering and information technolo-gy should be taken forward. At present theDepartment of State Languages ??is ex-panding the writing of science books in Hin-di by the National Science Basic Book Writ-ing Scheme. With this, science relatedbooks will be available in Hindi here as

well. It can survive as long as it is used bythe people so we should use only Hindi inour spoken language and at the same timeit is important to keep the Hindi languagepropagated apart from the medium of Hin-di language. The government shouldmake continuous efforts in this direction toprovide maximum employment opportuni-ties to the educated youth. Hindi is the bestmedium of communication among the peo-ple in India. So it should be preached toone another.

We also have to understand that chil-dren are like wet clay. What is taught tothem in childhood remains in their mindsand brains for a lifetime.

We have to show our children a truepicture of our tradition. The present gener-ation is moving away from their languageas well as from their rituals which is spread-ing Western culture. We understand theculture of the language we value so it is im-portant to keep the children connected withtheir language to keep them connectedwith the rituals. Today we need to awakenour soul and mind. We have to make thespecial importance of Hindi felt in the mindsof the new generation. Instead of forgettingHindi, it will only survive if it is accepted andrespected in its mind, otherwise it will not.Respect for Hindi means adopting the lan-guage of one's heart in one's life with dig-nity. One has to change one's thinkingwhether an English speaking person be-comes a scholar and a Hindi speaking per-son remains ignorant. We should speakand write good Hindi and our childrenshould also speak and write good Hindi. When there is Hindi in every householdthen it will be our point.

LIMPING MARRIAGESANIL MALHOTRA

Hindu marriages made in heaven, sol-emnized on Indian soil being in thenature of a sacrament find an uphill

road if sought to be broken on earth and dis-solved on fault grounds before competentCourts under personal law of parties. Di-vorce by mutual consent requires bothspouses to jointly petition the Court andmaintain the unanimous decision to part forat least six months from the date offirst hearing before the competentCourt. Marriages cannot be dis-solved in first year of marriage. OnAugust 6, in Shivani Yadav, HighCourt relaxed the rigor and dis-solved the marriage by mutual con-sent. When a traditional marriage ofa Global Indian breaks up, the anx-iety to dissolve it expeditiously ispreferred to be done in the foreignmatrimonial home of spouses.Vexed question which crops up frequentlybefore Indian marital Courts is whether to ac-cord recognition to such foreign divorce de-crees or not as invariably such overseas dis-solution is based on the ground of irretriev-able breakdown of marriage, which is not aground for divorce under Hindu MarriageAct, 1955 (HMA).

On September 13, in Sivasankaran,Supreme Court holding that “living togetheris not a compulsory exercise” when a couplehad not lived together for a single in 20 yearsof their marriage, used its powers under Ar-ticle 142 of the Constitution to note that di-vorce was “inevitable” to do complete justiceto parties. In R. Srinivas and Munish Kakkar,Supreme Court dissolved marriages underArticle 142 to grant divorce to litigating par-ties. Apex Court in Vishnu Dutt Sharma, andNeelam Kumar, have held that since irre-trievable breakdown of marriage is not aground for divorce recognised by statutory

law, no marriage can be dissolved on thisground under the HMA and it is for Parlia-ment to enact or amend the law on the sub-ject. Thus, any foreign court matrimonial de-cree dissolving a Hindu marriage on break-down principle does not find recognition inIndia. Consequently, whenever foreign di-vorce decrees are thrust before a Indianmatrimonial court in an attempt to avoid amatrimonial litigation of a divorce petitionpreferred by the local spouse on conven-

tional fault grounds under HMA,lack of maintainability has to betested on judicial principles settledby Supreme Court. Invariably, at-tempts to avoid divorce trials in In-dia on basis of foreign matrimoni-al decrees do not find favour. Par-ties are directed to file pleadingsand establish facts by leading evi-dence upon issues being framedby Indian Courts. Crisis only per-petuates misery of parties who can

no longer live together. Law CommissionRecommendations in 1978 and 2010 pro-posed adding irretrievable breakdown as aground for divorce, but draft laws preparedin 2013 by Union Government never sawlight of the day. Stalemate continues. ApexCourt in Y. Narashimha Rao’s case laiddown authoritative principles for recognitionof foreign matrimonial judgments by settlingthat “the jurisdiction assumed by the foreignCourt as well as the grounds on which therelief is granted must be in accordance withthe matrimonial law under which the partiesare married.” Culling out exceptions whenparties voluntarily and unconditionally sub-mit to jurisdiction of a foreign Court, wherethe contested decision is on a ground avail-able under law under which parties are mar-ried, Supreme Court afforded protection tospouses to ensure that they were not sad-dled with ex parte decisions based on for-eign law.

Progress over perfection: Alia Bhatt's yoga mantra

ctor Alia Bhatt knows how to kick away those Monday blues with a smile on her face, choosing progress over Aperfection as her mantra for yoga.

Taking to her Instagram handle on Monday, the 'Raazi' star posted pictures in which she can be seen practising yoga

with ease, dressed in an off-white and blue work-out outfit. Meanwhile, on the work front, Alia is currently shooting for Karan Johar's directorial 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem

Kahani'. The film's powerful cast also includes actors Ranveer Singh, Jaya Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and

Dharmendra Deol. Apart from this, Alia also has other interesting projects in the pipeline including 'RRR',

'Darlings' and 'Brahmastra'.

'Darlings' has pushed me out of my comfort zone: Roshan Mathew

ctor Roshan Mathew says working in the Hindi film "Darlings" offered him an opportunity to shake things Aup and get out of the comfort zone that he had settled

into the Malayalam cinema industry. Mathew, known to star in films like the 2019 Malayalam drama "Moothon", romantic-drama "Kappela" (2020) and the recently released action thriller "Kuruthi", features in "Darlings" alongside Alia Bhatt,

Shefali Shah and Vijay Varma. While the actor said it was too early to reveal details about his character in the Shah Rukh Khan-backed film, Mathew said the project was different from anything he had done before. "Alia, Vijay and Shefali are such incredible actors. It was a fantastic experience working on the film. For me, a lot of things about the project have been different from everything I have done so far. 'Darlings' for me was about getting out of a comfort zone that I was in," Mathew told a news agency. The actor, who made his Bollywood debut in 2020 with Anurag Kashyap's "Choked", completed "Darlings" last month. Mathew said unlike the functioning of a Malayam movie set, which he had become almost too comfortable with, working on "Darlings" brought with it a creative chaos that he was craving for."In the Malayalam industry, there is a certain environment on set and a certain way most movies are made. I was also beginning to really sit back and relax. This one has been a jarringly different experience. It has thrown me off majorly, I have tripped, fallen, and have struggled but at the end of the day, I can still sleep peacefully because I feel that is what I should be getting out of this film," he added.Mounted against the backdrop of a conservative lower middle-class neighbourhood, the film traces the lives of two women as they find courage and love in exceptional circumstances.
