FIRST DAY, Saturday (14-11-2015)

First Session (9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.)

Inaugural Function

The present 10 days ICSSR Sponsored workshop on Research

Methodology in Social Science is organized in the department of Geography,

AMU, Aligarh during 14-23 November, 2015. The workshop began with

inaugural function, which started with recitation of few verses of Holy Quran at

9:30 a.m. The dignitaries on dice were Prof. V. K. Shrivastava, President of

National Association of Indian Geographers (NAGI) and Emeritus Professor at

Rani Durgawati University, Jabalpur, Professor Barkatullah Khan, former

chairman of Geography, at University of Delhi, Prof. K.Z. Amani, former

chairman of Department of Geography, AMU, Aligarh, Prof. Abdul Munir,

senior Geography professor and Dean, Faculty of Science, Prof. Shamsul Haque

Siddiqui, Chairperson, Department of Geography, AMU, Aligarh and Professor

Nizamuddin Khan, Course Director. Prof. V. K. Shrivastava was felicitated as

Chief Guest, while Profs. K. Z. Amani and Barkatullah Khan were as Guest of

Honor in the inaugural function.

The guests on dice were felicitated with the presentation of bouquet

by faculty members and research scholars of the department of Geography.

Prof. Abdul Munir, dean, faculty of science offered a warm welcome with

bookie to Prof. V.K. Shrivastava, chief guest of the function. Prof. Shamsul

Haque Siddiqui, chairperson of Geography presented bouquet to Prof.

Barkatullah Khan, guest of honor. Prof. Nizamuddin Khan, course director

offered the welcome with bouquet to Prof. K.Z. Amani. Dr. Mumtaz

Ahmad, Deputy Course director presented bouquet to Prof. S. H. Siddiqui,

chairperson of department of Geography. While the Course Director and

Deputy Course Director received bouquet by Dr. Haseenur Rehman and

Dr. Naseem Ahmed, respectively.

After the felicitation of chief guest and guest of honor, Prof.

Nizamuddin Khan, Course Director offered a warm welcome to the

participants as well as to guests came from different parts of the country. He

presented brief information about the objectives, mission and criteria of

selection of participants. Prof. Khan highlighted the interest of Ph.D.

scholars towards the course of research methodology as around 400

applicants were received from various universities of majority of states of

the country. As per the directions of the sponsoring agency ICSSR, New

Delhi, participants were selected taking into consideration sex, castes,

minority, disciplines and region. However, 20 outstation and 10 local

participants selected as per directions of ICSSR (list attached).Above all,

under pressure of increasing aspirants from various disciplines of social

sciences, around two dozen participants were also permitted without any

financial support.

Welcome Address

It is a great pleasure and privilege for me to welcome you to the

ICSSR Sponsored Workshop on Research Methodology in Social Science in

the department of Geography at Aligarh Muslim University, Aligarh. May I

take this opportunity to extend to all of you warm greetings on behalf of the

director, Capacity Building and Research Methodology, ICSSR, New

Delhi, chairperson, department of Geography, AMU, Aligarh and on behalf

of myself as course director.

I am happy to see the positive response which we have received from

young researchers from different disciplines of social science and humanities

from all corners of the country for getting valuable and worthwhile research

training.

The course on Research Methodology in Social Sciences is designed

to impart knowledge for scientific research to integrate qualitative and

quantitative approaches in research and orient the young researchers to new

advance techniques for precise, rational and scientific research. It also aims

to train the scholars with advance statistical packages including SPSS for

using in various fields and sub fields of social sciences and humanities. It is

particularly meant for those who are engaged in survey research and have

some basic knowledge of data processing, analysis and interpretation.

One of the purposes of the training programme is to help scholars

with some of the basic features of computerized database management and

the use of computers in data analysis and data interpretation. The course

includes a combination of theoretical lectures and practical experience on

computers and some commonly available computer applications for both

quantitative and qualitative analysis of data. The participants would be

given some research project and the data generated would be used for

application of various statistical concepts and techniques, from simple to

complex multivariate techniques of data analysis. Both Excel and SPSS

would be used for data processing & analysis.

The present training program will cover about 20 themes of research

techniques and methodology applied for scientific research in social science

and humanities.

I would like to highlight the increasing interest of research scholars

towards training in research methodology. I received 326 applications from

various colleges / universities from majority of states of the country. Out of

this, 134 are female applicants. The applicants are from about 20 disciplines.

The maximum number of applicants are from management (48) followed by

Geography (47), Education (40) Economics (39), Commerce (24) and

Psychology (23). Other disciplines record less than 20 applicants. We are

very under pressure and faced difficulties in selection of candidates

following the guidelines of ICSSR. However, 20 candidates are selected

from universities other than Aligarh Muslim University, while only 10 from

AMU.Aligarh Moreover some scholars are also nominated from my own

university without any financial support keeping in consideration of their

over enthusiasm for participation in the discussed workshop.

Distinguished participants, we, in department of Geography, look

forward to your advice and suggestions concerning an appropriate strategy

for the development of the research methodology training in future for

better performance.

I wish you success in your present endeavor and a very pleasant stay in

Aligarh.

Prof. Shamsul Haque Siddiqui, chairperson, department of Geography

delivered brief remarks on the need of good, rational and scientific research

which could not be performed without well understanding of research

methodology and techniques. He also highlighted the profile and academic

facilities available in the department and kindly allowed to participants to

utilize them whenever they need.

Prof. Abdul Munir, Dean, Faculty of science, also stressed on the

development of research skills and urged the participants to be more

practical rather than theoretical. He expressed his high level of expectation

from the 10 days workshop and viewed that our participants would be

enriched with well understanding of research techniques and methods for

pursuing high quality of research.

The chief guest, Prof. V.K. Shrivastva focused on the development of

indigenous research techniques and methods which will be more rational

and socially relevance to different themes of research.

The inaugural function ended with presentation of Vote of Thanks by

Dr Mumtaz Ahmad, Deputy, Course Director and Assistant Professor in

the department of Geography. In the end tea break was declared for 15

minutes.

Second Session (11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.)

Prof. Barkatullah Khan

After tea break, the second session was started by Prof. Barkatullah

Khan and he delivered his lecture on conceptual research and encouraged

the participants how to initiate the doctoral research. He emphasized upon

use of statistical techniques in data analysis process for a good scientific

research in social science. He also taught about model building process for

both inductive and deductive interference in research process. He also

discussed about the philosophy of research and method how to make

research more social relevance.

Third Session (1:45 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.)

Prof. V. K. Shrivastava

The third session, after lunch, was delivered by Prof. V.K. Shrivastwa

on the issues of indigenous research methods and motivated the participants

to concentrate on research concept and philosophy originated in the country

and developed by Indian scholars and scientists. He delivered his idea on

how a humanistic and spiritual research could be done scientifically and

stressed on honesty and ethics in following research methodology to

achieving targeted objectives.

Fourth Session (3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

Prof. Nizamuddin Khan

The fourth session was addressed by Prof. Nizamuddin Khan, course

director and the participants were introduced with university campus

environment and landscape. Outstation participants were associated with

local participants in some groups and sent to visit various departments,

hostels and other important heritage of the university.

SECOND DAY, Sunday (15-11-2015)

First Session (9:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m.)

Prof. V.K. Shrivastava

On 15th November, the first session was lectured by Prof. V.K.

Shrivastava. He extended his lecture connecting the themes of research

methodology discussed on 14th November. He highlighted the perspective,

objectives and hypothesis formulation of research. Prof. Shrivastava,

further, attracted the attention of participants towards scope of geographic

research in solving socio economic problems and prospects in different

regions of world. He opined that research is like a perennial river. It never

ends - only begins. The ultimate objective of man, the researcher, is to

understand the purpose of his birth on the earth. Man is an inborn

geographer, so most of what he does on the earth is environs and to enhance

the quality of life, both in material and spiritual terms.

Second Session (11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.)

Prof. Abdul Waheed

Prof. Abdul Waheed, an eminent scholar of social and cultural

studies, taught the participants about the method and techniques how to

tackle research problems relating cultural activities of a particular social and

ethnic community. He delivered his lecture on the theme entitled

Significance of Qualitative Research Techniques for Cultural and

Community Study. Prof. Waheed tried to make understand the participant

through empirical studies on Banjara community.

Third Session (1:45 p.m. - 3:15 p.m.)

Prof. S.S.A. Jafri

Prof. S.S.A. Jafri, an eminent geographer retired from Giri Institute

Development Studies, Lucknow, delivered lecture and demonstrate the

participants about report writing and referencing in theses as well as in

research paper writing. He highlighted important contents like introduction,

conceptual frame work, hypothesis, research plan and chapter design of a

research report. Prof. Jafri also stressed on the use of scientific and

understandable language in writing thesis, report as well as research papers.

Fourth Session (3:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

Prof. S.S.A. Jafri

The fourth session of the same day was also engaged by Prof. Jafri. In

this session he elaborated about the methods of sampling for primary data

collection. He defined the sampling and highlighted the need of sampling in

research work. He also lectured on various kinds of sampling techniques

and explained where and when a particular kind of sampling would be

selected for a particular targeted research.

THIRD DAY, Monday (16-11-2015)

First Session (9:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m.)

Dr. Shaheen Parveen

The first session of third day of workshop was addressed by a

dynamic and versatile young resource person, Dr. Shaheen Perveen,

Associate Professor, Institute of Public Enterprise, Osmania University,

Hyderabad. She delivered an introductory lecture on important

fundamental concepts of research techniques in social science. Data

definition, classification, processing and presentation with the help of

distinct statistical techniques like histograms, bar diagrams, polygon etc.

were well discussed in this session. She also discussed scale of measurement

as well as measures of central tendency and dispersion or variation.

Dr. Shaheen Parveen

Dr. Shaheen, in second session of same day, expressed her experience

and taught the participants about various suitable statistical techniques

applied in research work. She also highlighted the need and various kinds of

samplings. Dr Shaheen demonstrated practically in class room and told how

to select the suitable sampling techniques for study of desired problems. She

also discussed with participants about uni-variate and multi-variate

statistical techniques applied in social science research.

Dr. Shaheen Parveen

Dr Shaheen, on special request of participants, lectured in third

session of third day of the workshop. She taught the participants about the

regression analysis including both simple and multiple linear regression

models. Dr Shaheen described in very scientific and understandable way

about least squares estimation, co-efficient determination, t-test, f-test etc in

this session.

Prof. Akbar Hussain

Prof. Akbar Hussain, an eminent professor in Department

Psychology, A.M.U., Aligarh, delivered lecture on the theme of analytical

model of research. He started his lecture with definition of research and

discovery. Prof. Akbar defined as research is concerned with the systematic

gathering of information. Its purpose is to help us in our search for the truth.

He taught the participants about various types of research. He described as

explanatory, experimental, co-relational and survey as distinct forms of

research. Theoretically and empirically with suitable examples, he explained

to participants about different kinds of research conducted by social

scientists.

FOURTH DAY, Tuesday (17-11-2015)

Prof. Qazi Mazhar Ali

Prof. Qazi Mazhar Ali, chairperson, department of Statistics,

A.M.U., Aligarh has kindly agreed to provide his laboratory facilities for

SPSS training in his department for two days. He presented introductory

talk and delivered lectured on orientation of research. He highlighted the

statistical methods and techniques used in research .He created the interest

among participants through question answer mechanism.

Dr. Haseeb Athar, assistant professor, department of Statistics, lectured on

the theme exploratory data analysis. He explained different statistical

techniques like regression, factor analysis and co-relation used in the process

of analysis of data and research.

The third session after noon was also engaged by Dr. Haseeb Athar of

same department. He extended his lecture of second session in third session

and trained the participants how to test the statistical techniques and results

up to significance level. He did not only explain theoretically but trained

them practically in laboratory.

Dr. Haseeb Athar

Dr. Haseeb Athar again delivered lecture on latest statistical programs

used in research analysis in social science. He lectured on ANOVA,

ANCOVA and Linkert scale analysis. The participants were very much

interested and learnt about this package practically in laboratory of statistics

and operation research department, at A.M.U, Aligarh.

FIFTH DAY, Wednesday (18-11-2015)

First Session (9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.)

Prof. Farasat Ali Siddiqui

Professor Farasat Ali Siddiqui, an eminent professor of population

Geography, delivered his lecture on the technique how to select indicators

for different problems in social science especially in demography research.

He guided the participants with suitable case studies in various socio

economic indicators were selected.

Second Session (11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.)

Prof. Abdul Munir

Prof. Abdul Munir, senior professor in geography and dean faculty of

Science, presented his experience of research of 30 years and warned the

participants not to select unwanted statistical methods and techniques in

research work. He spoke that that after quantitative revolution, heavy use of

statistical tools became a fashion like GIS today. Prof. Munir presented his

past empirical research work and clearly explained when and how factor

analysis and regression will be used for research purpose.

Third Session (1:45 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.)

Prof. Badar Alam Iqubal

Prof. Badar Iqubal, senior and world known professor in commerce,

A.M.U., Aligarh, delivered high steamed lecture on the motivation and

objectives of researchers for doing research. The theme of his lecture was

Research either by choice or default. Prof. Iqubal, through interaction with

the participants, came on conclusion that most of researchers are by default

not by choice. He urged the participants to accept research work as mission

and follow the ethics and honesty in their profession. He elaborated about

the basic themes of research methodology and trained practically how to

prepare good research papers and projects in future.

Fourth Session (3:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.)

Field Survey - I

The last session of the day was planned to visit urban newly

developed morphology of Aligarh city. The name of the area is called as

Centre Point. Before the survey, the course director Prof. Nizamuddin Khan

addressed the participants and told them how to observe and interact with

shop keepers and market participants. Different groups of participants with

at least one local participant were formed and they interviewed the people

in the Centre Point Area and they also studied about morphology and land

use system in the market area. Besides, they also enjoyed and took coffee

there. This programme was guided and controlled by deputy course

director, Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad, assistant professor in the department of

Geography, A.M.U., Aligarh. After 6:00 p.m. the participants returned to

their hotel and took dinner together.

SIXTH DAY, Thursday (19-11-2015)

First Session (9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.)

Prof. Aquil Ahmad

Prof. Aquil Ahmad, department of Statistics and Operational

Research, A.M.U., Aligarh, gave new dimension to the statistical

techniques for using in research analysis process. Regression diagnostic

through software was the theme of his lecture.

Second Session (11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.)

Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma

Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma, department of Statistics, Punjab

University, Chandigarh, delivered a dynamic lecture on the SPSS package

and highlighted the use of factor analysis for understanding cause and effect

analysis of any problem of research with a view to get targeted scientific

result. He also described about use of ANOVA and ANCOVA programs for

research purpose.

Third Session (1:45 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.)

Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma

Prof. Suresh Kumar Sharma again continued his lecture in third

session in continuation of first lecture. He concentrated himself in this

lecture on cluster and determinant analysis and further encouraged the

participants to use SPSS method in making such analysis. Different

experiments and demonstration were made in computer laboratory in the

department of statistics.

Fourth Session (3:15 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

Prof Aquil Ahmad, department of Statistics, again gave lecture in last

session of the sixth day. He extended his lecture which delivered in first

session. His theme of lecture was Regression Diagnostics through Software

Packages II.

However, the whole day was devoted to training for SPSS package in

the laboratory of department of Statistics and Operational Research. All

resource persons trained the participants to satisfactory level.

SEVENTH DAY, Friday (20-11-2015)

First Session (9:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m.) & Second Session (11:15 a.m. -

12:45 p.m.)

Prof. Masood Ahsan Siddiqui

Prof. Masood Ahsan Siddiqui, a renound GIS scholar, department of

Geography, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, addressed the participants

about the use of digital data in research analysis. He lectured on the theme

Geo-Spatial Technology: Moving from data to information. He

demonstrated through the use of GIS software how the vector information

could be changed into raster and vise versa. He also continued his lecture on

the same theme in second session after 15 minutes tea break.

Third Session (1:45 p.m. -3:00 p.m.)

Dr. Jabir Ali

Dr. Jabir Ali, Associate Professor, Indian Institute of Management,

Lucknow, presented very interesting lecture on research methodology in a

very attractive way. Participants were much eager to listening him. Dr. Ali

highlighted the crux problems of researcher how to identify research

problem.

Fourth session was also continued by Dr. Jabir Ali, after short tea

break of 15 minutes. He stressed in this session on the method to

conceptualize the research problems and its framework. He guided the

participants with suitable examples of his own experience for conceptualize

their research problems before starting the research work. Dr. Ali also

focused on six steps to be followed for preparation of good quality

manuscript. Definition of problem, literature review, objectives &

hypothesis determination, data generation and collection, computation and

analysis and interpretation are important steps for good research manuscript

preparation.

EIGHTH DAY, Saturday (21-11-2015)

First Session (9:30 a.m. -11:00 a.m.)

Prof. Shamsul Haque Siddiqui

Prof. S. H. Siddiqui, Chairperson, Department of Geography,

A.M.U., Aligarh, a distinguished professor in agricultural geography,

delivered lecture on research techniques used in the study of agriculture and

related problems. He presented his experience with the empirical examples

of flood as natural disaster in North Bihar. He taught about the factor and

regression analysis techniques how to be used in the study of Agricultural

Geography.

Second Session (11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.)

Field Survey - II

The second field survey was conducted in village located in the rural-

urban fringe of Aligarh city. The name of village is Qila Ka Nagla. This

village has unique character of urban life among rural people. Near this

village Aligarh Fort is located which is designated as A.M.U., Botanical

Garden, after which the village is named as Qila Ka Nagla. The participants

with course directors visited Qila and village and interviewed the rural

people and generated data on socio economic impact of urban centre,

Aligarh City on the inhabitants of village. They observed rural morphology

and witnessed the change in rural land use system in the village under the

influence of urbanization.

Third & Fourth Sessions (2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.)

Dr. Upendra Choudhury

Dr. Upendra Choudhury, associate professor, department of Political

Science, A.M.U., Aligarh and Deputy Director, ICSSR, New Delhi,

presented his lecture in two continuous sessions. He guided and suggested

the participants how to write good research paper. Dr. Choudhury urged

them to be very clear and well understood about the definition and

conceptualization of the research problems. Researcher should aim limited

number of objectives and hypotheses when proceeding for writing a paper.

He also emphasized for strong and an exhaustive literature review which

will be giving more value to the paper.

Dr. Choudhury in his second lecture, suggested the participants

regarding the availability of funds from different agencies especially from

Indian Council of Social science Research. They became aware about

Prof. Brijesh Kumar Bajpai

Prof. Bajpai is an economist in Giri Institute of Development Studies,

Lucknow. He presented his deliberation on the theme of Concept and

Methods in Social Science Research. He highlighted the definition of

scientific research, inductive and deductive methods and units of analysis.

Second Session (11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.)

Prof. Fahimuddin, an economist in Giri Institute of Development

Studies, Lucknow, highlighted the salient features of a research projects. He

guided the participants how to prepare a research project for approval from

funding agencies especially from ICSSR, New Delhi.

These two sessions were further addressed by again by Prof. Brijesh

Kumar Bajpai and Prof. Faheemuddin and they extended their earlier

lectures started before lunch session.

Prof. Abdul Matin

Prof. Abdul Matin, department of Sociology, A.M.U., Aligarh,

delivered his lecture on the theme Research Methodology: Deductive and

Inductive Logic of Enquiry. He highlighted four types i.e. inductive,

deductive, retroductive and abductive logic of enquiries are applied in social

science research.

Second Session (11:15 a.m. - 12:45 p.m.)

Dr. Mohd. Abid Siddiqui

Dr. Mohd Abid Siddiqui, associate professor, department of

Education, AMU, Aligarh expressed his ideas on data gathering tools in

social science research. He opined that objectivity; reliability, utility,

validity, norms, tractability, discriminating power and simplicity are the

important tools of good research.

Lunch (12:45 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.)

VALEDICTORY SESSION (2:00 p.m. onwards)

Valedictory function of the workshop was organized in the

department of Geography at 2:00 p.m. Prof. N.A.K. Durrani, deanf of

social science was the chief guest of the session and Prof. Baharul Islam,

IIM, Kashipur (Uttarakhand) as guest of honor of the session. Prof. Abdul

Munir, dean faculty of science, Prof. Shamsul Haque Siddiqui, chairperson,

department of Geography, Prof. Nizamuddin Khan, course director and Dr.

Mumtaz Ahmad, co-course coordinator were also present as important

dignitaries of the session.

The valedictory session was opened with the recitation of verses of

Holy Quran. Prof. Nizamuddin Khan presented a brief report of the

workshop highlighting important events performed during ten days. Prof.

Shamsul Haque Siddiqui expressed his experience of the present event of

workshop on research methodology and showed his satisfaction and

appreciation to the organizer of the program for best performance. Prof.

Baharul Islam showed his great pleasure about the conduct of such course

for high quality research and encouraged the participants for better

performance. He presented his optimistic view for young scholars and urged

them to harness and develop their latent potential of research and

exploration. Prof. N.A.K. Durrani presented his last message to the

participants and called for regular occurrence of such course in the

university. He appreciated the whole body of organizing team especially

chairperson for providing different kind of facilities and amenities needed

for successful workshop. At the last, certificates were distributed by chief

guest and guest of honor to the participants.

Finally, vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Mumtaz Ahmad,

assistant professor, to ICSSR, New Delhi, chairperson D/o Geography and

Statistics for providing facilities for better performance of workshop and

deans of faculty of science and social science for their moral support. He

also presented due thank to office bearers of Registrar, Finance, Dean, and

department for their help and support. Due thanks were also presented to

participants, guest house, hotel and students of the department for their

valuable contribution in best performance of the present workshop on

research methodology.

In this way the workshop came to an end and was declared as

completed after a session of high tea.
