ALIPUR MUSLIM ASSOCIATION 2011 5

Assalamu Alaikum

One often stands in awe of any institution when it

reaches any milestone. We have had many, most of

which passed us by.

It is, however, necessary to reflect and, in this regard,

history is of vital importance. From documents

retrieved, it appears that our Association was formed

on 16 December 1942. At least it was on that day that

the Constitution was adopted by our forefathers.

We are now in existence for, at least, 69 years. And,

Alhamdulillah, the journey continues.

Any institution which achieves such a milestone does

not do so of its own accord, but by the efforts of its

leaders and visionaries, and it is to them that I extend

our gratitude. They had the foresight to establish this

institution and, at the same time, developed its infra-

structure and nurtured it so that it could survive as

long as it has.

At least sixty nine years have passed since its founding

members mooted the idea of establishing an

institution for the benefit of our people. The fact that

it has not only survived this long, but that it has and

continues to grow from strength to strength is due to

the commitment, dedication and sustained support of

those who have taken over the mantle from our

elders.

It is gratifying to note that our institution has

metamorphosed from a local grouping, assisting our

brothers and sisters in our motherland, to one which

has played and will continue to play a vitally important

role in the lives of people, locally, nationally and,

hopefully, globally sometime in the future.

Whilst we continue to honour our commitment to the

people of Alipore in India, it is our activities locally that

have become significant. Alhamdulillah, our activities

play a role in so many lives. We have, through the

generosity of our donors and benefactors, made it

possible for so many of our children to further their

studies at tertiary level and who, but for our

Association, would otherwise have been unable to do.

Whilst we will continue to carry out our activities in

accordance with our stated policy - that to assist those

in need - it is becoming extremely difficult to do so as

a result of financial constraints. The world is

experiencing an economic crisis and we are no

different.

I believe that for our Association to continue assisting

our people, and probably even increase the scope of

our activities and assistance, we need to become self-

sufficient. Income from donors and benefactors is the

backbone which fund our activities and we are

grateful for this. But we need to diversify and expand.

Current legislation make it difficult for institutions like

ours - and more so Muslim - to engage in income

producing activities across the business spectrum. We

are, due to our religious beliefs, restricted further.

Property appears to be the only option open to us if

we intend to broaden our horizons and assist even

more people.

It is something we must look at and strive for.

We have played a small and humble role globally as

well. I am referring to our contribution to the people

of Palestine. Daily, we read about natural disasters

affecting Muslims all over the world. And Africa in

particular. Currently, the people of Somalia are facing

starvation and potential death. The land, we are told,

can no longer support its people. The combination of

Africa’s worst drought in 60 years and Somalia’s

relentless conflict has depleted the country’s food

supplies. We must remember the Hadith that “A

person will be under the shade of his charity on the

scorching Day of Judgment. The larger his charity, the

larger the shade”.

We must expand our area of influence and help.

Wassalaam

Secretary

Alipur Muslim Association

AS SALAAMU ALAIKUM WARAHMATULLAHI

WABARAKATUHU

In the name of Allah, the most Compassionate, the

most Merciful. All praise to Allah, sustainer of the

worlds and peace and salutations upon our leader,

Hadhrat Muhammad Mustapha (SAW), his family, his

companions and all his followers.

Alhamdulillah, with the grace of Almighty Allah, we

have successfully sailed through another 2 years. The

strength of a ship is not tested by the miles navigated

in calm water, but by its resilience to withstand the

turbulent seas that challenges its very existence.

Milestones are occasions to pause and celebrate,

regroup and refuel for the journey ahead. We, the

Alipur Muslim Association, look at milestones that

reflect value as seen by our elders, our colleagues and

our well wishers.

My term of office has come to an end. The 2 years has

rapidly gone by which makes me ponder on the fact

that life is moving at a very fast pace, thus, as the

saying goes “life is short”. Honourable members, I, on

behalf of the executive and the current board

members, extend a warm and hearty welcome to one

and all present here today being the Biennial General

Meeting of the vibrant Alipur Muslim Association of

South Africa. We express our gratitude to the Almighty

Allah for blessing us with this day to assemble here to

participate in the affairs of our Association. I will

endeavour to present to you a brief overview of the

activities of the Association for the past two years.

OBITUARY AND CONDOLENCE

My first duty is to extend our codolences to all

members and/or family members who have passed

away during my term of office. On behalf of the

Association, I express my sincerest sympathy to all the

bereaved families. I make Dua that Allah (SWT) grant

to the families the strength to bear their irreparable

loss and that Allah Ta Ala grant all Marhoomeen

Jannatul Firdous – Aaameen. For the past 2 years a

total of 110 sympathy letters were sent to the families

of the deceased persons. Also, a total of 154 000 SMSs

were sent (i.e. 110 x 1400 SMS = 154000).

In particular we remember Marhoom Essopbhai Laher

and Marhoom Mohamed Dajee. Both were members

of the AMA upon their demise. Their contribution to

the Association was immense, enormous and

invaluable. Marhoom Essopbhai was kind and

generous and always put himself before others.

Marhoom Mohamed Dajee, has left a legacy which will

be difficult to emulate. My late dear brother

Mohamed and I were very close and I most definitely

miss him immensely. But it is the will of Allah SWT and

as such it is unquestionable and verily Allah knows

best. I will remember him for his great spirit, his

laughter and most importantly for his wisdom which

he shared with me and many another people. I will

always remember him for his sternness, for his

affection, dedication and full commitment towards the

enhancement and the advancement of our

community, our families, our Madressahs and our

Masjids. May the Almighty be pleased with him and

his unselfish efforts. Marhoom Essopbhai and

Marhoom Mohamedbhai’s presence will be truly

missed especially today at this Biennial Meeting. May

Allah grant them Magfiraat.

FINANCE

The report of the treasurer will be more precise and

accurate as to the origin of our income. However,

majority of our Lillah and Zakaat is collected during the

month of Ramadaan. From the accumulated funds we

grant Bursary loans, take care of Welfare cases (which

have increased rapidly over the years) within our

community in South Africa, pay for the funeral SMS

sent out. Then also, we send Zakaat and Lillah to India

to assist with the running of the Madressa, the Masjid

and the Darul Uloom. The funds are also used for the

payment of salaries of the Ustaads, the cleaners, the

chefs, the Imaams and the Muazzins. The AMA

acknowledges with extreme gratitude all persons for

their unselfish and hearty financial contributions. A

special mention has to be made here of the generous

R10000.00 Lillah received from the HBZ Bank and also

of the huge amount of Lillah, R106928.63, specifically

for bursary loans was received from Zuleikha Bibi Mia

Laher. It is our fervent Dua that Allah bless all our

donors ten fold, whether it be big or small, whether it

be monetary or by way of Dua. We say Jazakallah to

one and all of our kind and generous people out there

for their relentless support in the past and we are

confident that you will continue to support your Alipur

Muslim Association in the future. We thank you for

heeding to our SMS call for help.

INDIA ACTIVITIES

The vibes going around amongst our younger

generation – why should we send money to India?

Well, our parents are from India, which would be their

(younger generation’s) forefathers. Because they were

poverty stricken over there; they came here with the

intention that they would work here in the sugar cane

fields in Durban and send some of their earnings back

to India to their families. A case of greener pastures.

Ever since this has become a norm and we continue in

their footsteps. Lest we forget that they had a lot of

faith, thus they felt this was taqdeer - the will of Allah.

However, as time went on, the community here in S A

increased, thus some funds had to be accumulated

here to help the needy. This is where we find

ourselves now. Bear in mind that we presently utilize

more funds here then what we send abroad. Be it as it

may, we should be proud of Alipore India on the fact

that we can boast about our Darul Uloom, our own

library, we have a hospital, 3 Masjids, Madressas,

water wells and that we are just off the National

Highway.

A sore point – after several decades we are faced with

a crucial issue with one of the purchased lands that we

own. Apparently when it was sold to us then, the

paper work (title deed) at the City Council remained as

is – the transfer of the property was not changed. This

land was purchased for 5000 pounds British Sterling by

the AMA from the late Mohamed Laher. What has

now happened is the late Mohamedbhai’s sons, Bashir

and Ismail, residing in Leicester UK have come to the

fore from nowhere and sold the land. The other issue

is that the building on this land was put up for the

AMA by the late Ahmed Mayet. Presently, we are

tackling the problem and as such we request for your

duas that we make the right decisions without faulting

on our part at all.

THANK YOU

Ya Allah I express my sincere gratitude and thanks to

You from the bottom of my heart for guiding me,

granting me the strength, the ability and the

knowledge to serve on this grand Association. I hope

that I have only gained mohabbat and not animosity

within our membership and the community at large.

To all my co-officials, I say Jazakallah and my heartfelt

appreciation for your unselfish assistance, advice and

guidance during my term of office.

CONCLUSION

The 2 years under review has been a tremendous

challenge. As we enter a new session let us dedicate

ourselves to achieve the best for our community and

strive to uplift our Association to even greater heights.

Let us administer sincerely so that we may encourage

others to contribute towards our organization’s

success. We must realize that good administration

only comes from dedicated administrators. So let us

be constructive to be productive. To the incoming

executive and management members I wish them

every success in their endeavours. Thank you one and

all for having confidence in me and affording me the

privilege of serving this grand and mighty Association.

It was indeed a pleasure and an honour.

ALIPUR MUSLIM ASSICIATION 2011 8

BURSARIES

The Alipur Muslim Association grants bursary loans to needy students to enable them to obtain tertiary education. Alhamdulillah, many students who benefited from this scheme have graduated and are practising in their respective professions. We are proud that this bursary scheme has produced doctors, accountants, lawyers, teachers and many other professionals. It has been noted that new applicants are embarking upon studies in fields which were previously closed to them. It is our stated intention, funds permitting, to assist as many students as possible so that our children may enter a wide spectrum of professions. In this way, they will benefit society and uplift the ummah. However, the bursary loans are repayable. It is a condition of such bursary loans that it be repaid as soon as the student graduates and is gainfully employed. Alhamdulillah, many students have repaid their loans and we thank them for this. In this way, others may also benefit and have an opportunity to further their studies. Sadly, the majority of students who have benefited from this scheme, and who have already qualified and are gainfully employed, have not made any repayment. We urge these students to contact us so that repayment arrangements may be made and agreed upon. Please note that the schedule below is obtained from our records. Certain students may have made payment directly into our Bank account without informing us and without reflecting any reference in respect of such payment. We call upon any student who may be affected in this regard to let us have proof of payment so that our records may be amended. Should payment be made directly into our Bank account, then the onus is on the student to clearly reflect the account number and to inform us of such payment.

The early 1940’s saw the establishment of one of the

few Masajid and Madaris in the Johannesburg central

business district. The Muslim community, mainly

Aliporians, in the vicinity, saw this need. It was the

Lahers, the Mayets, the Loonats, the Kosadias and the

Seedats. And then from the surrounding areas, Jeppe,

Bertrams, Doornfontein, Denver, Cleveland, La

Rouchelle, Ophirton, Turffontein and Von Wielligh

Street to name but a few, came the Rawats, the

Karolias, the Moollahs, the Dajees, the Karas, also the

Rajas, the Vorajees, the Ganchees, the Allys, the

Buntings, the Mias, who frequented the renowned

Madressa Himayatul Islam, now popularly known as

the Nugget Street Masjid. To mention a few of the

prominent past and present members of the

institution whom we hold in high esteem are; the late I

F H Mayet, his late son Haroon, the late I E Laher, and

presently his son, Abdul Rehman, the late E E Laher,

Ahmedbhai Patel (Patsons) the late Ahmed Akoobhai

Laher (Universal), presently his son Amin together

with his son Ahmed, the late Hassen Seedat, the late

Mohamed Dajee and presently Idris Kara, Goolam

Hoosen Loonat. Please forgive us if we failed to

mention anyone. May Allah be pleased with all

persons, the ustaads, the muazzins, the huffas, the

moulanas past and present, who have been involved

with this institution. Mention should be made of the

late Moulana Timol, may Allah grant him Magfirat,

Moulana A K Moolla, Moulana Munia and Moulana

Yacoob. A special gratitude to

Moulana Saleh Hajat who has

rendered and continues to

render his service to the

Masjid at no cost at all.

Madressa Himayatul Islam is,

Alhamdudillah, very much

aabaad by the will and grace

of Almighty Allah. Although

the Masjid itself could not be

extended to accommodate

more Musallees, it was

upgraded, painted and refurbished in 2007. The

institution currently employs 2 imaams (ustaads), an

appa and 2 muazzins. We must admit our forefathers

were amazing and had foresight and very much

Islamically inclined.

In the year 1961/62 the Masjid and Madaris was

demolished to make way for an even bigger Masjid.

During this period the Madressa was moved to the

Gold Street Primary School. The Barakaah of this

Masjid is astonishing – a few years later the upstairs

section was extended

by 2 wings to

accommodate a further

+ - 120 musallees.

Comes 1995 a need

arose to accommodate

even more people led

to the acquisition of a

huge warehouse floor

in the adjoining

building from the

Tayob brothers. In

1999 Tayob Towers

was sold which put us

in a predicament and in a state of panic thus forgetting

for a moment that Allah SWT is the best of planners.

The Tayob family once again came to our rescue and

without any hesitation they generously granted us the

use of a 3 storey building situated at 176 President

Street, off End Street. It was Amin Laher and Jameel

Mayet who were instrumental in negotiating with the

Tayobs. The late Mohamed Dajee immediately took it

upon himself to administer and oversee the

renovations to these new premises which was

completed at a cost of R340000.00. Presently, Zuhr,

Jummah and Eid Salaahs are performed at the

Musallah. It also facilitates Madressa classes with 65

learners and the building accommodates and houses 1

imaam, 2 muazzins and their families. For the Jummah

Salaah we experience

capacity crowds; + - 400 in

the Masjid and 1200

Musallees at the Musallah.

The monthly running

expenses are in the region

of R27000.00.

Alhamdudillah, with your

sincere Duas and generous

Lillah donations, together

with our weekly Jummah

collections we are able to sustain the Masjid and the

institution. So please consider Madressah Himayatul

Islam when discharging your lillah for Sawaab-e-Jariah.

The responsible committee is; Chairman – Abdul

Rehman Laher, Vice Chairman – Idris Kara, Secretary A

R Dajee (after the demise of Mohamed Dajee),

Treasurer – Goolam Hoosen Loonat, Voluntary office

bearers – Amin A Laher and Moulana Saleh Hajat. May

Allah accept our efforts and may He, in His wisdom

continue to use us.

The Eagle and Crow

“Anwaar-e-Suhaili is a well known Persian book. In it has been narrated a very thought provoking story:

Once a man saw a crow whose wings were cut. He thought, “poor thing, how is it going to survive? From where shall it

get its food?” Hardly a moment had passed when that person spotted an eagle carrying some prey in its beak. The eagle

came closer, landed and fed the crow.

On seeing this the man thought “ This is how Allah provides for His creatures, so why should I worry about earning a

living. Allah will provide for me.” So he sat down and remained idle. Some days passed but yet the person did not get

anything. One wise man said to him “ O servant of Allah, you were shown two birds, one injured crow and an eagle.

Why did you prefer to become like the crow? Why did you not think about becoming like the eagle who not only eats

himself but also feeds others who are in need?

This story illustrates very well the real nature of ‘Tawakkul’. IF anyone has yet means of livelihood at his disposal, then

he should not give up those means. His case is a like that of the eagle. He should not only fulfil his own needs but also

look after others. “

Education---like democracy, free markets, freedom of the press,

and "universal human rights" --- is one of those subjects whose

virtue is considered self-evident. So is the superiority of the

industrially advanced countries in attaining them. Consequently,

any package that arrives with one of these magic labels on it,

automatically qualifies for the "green channel" at our entry

ports. No questions asked. This uncritical acceptance has

severely crippled our discussion of all these vital topics. For

example in education most of our discussion centers around

literacy statistics and the need to have so many graduates,

masters, Phd’s, and so many professionals --- engineers,

doctors, etc.--- in a given country based on the standards in the

industrially advanced countries. The central issue of curriculum,

and even more fundamental issue of the purpose of education

normally do not attract our attention; they have already been

decided by the "advanced’ countries for us and our job is only to

follow in their footsteps to achieve their level of progress.

Indeed they have. In the "first" world, education has become an

extension of the capitalist system. Its purpose is to provide

qualified workforce for its machinery of production and eager

consumers for its products. Stated in a more polished form, the

purpose of education is to provide for the economic prosperity

of a country. Similarly on a personal level today the purpose of

education is to be able to earn a respectable living.

While earning halal living and providing for the economic well

being of a country are certainly important Islamic goals as well,

the linking of education to financial goals is extremely

unfortunate. It turns the centers of learning into mere

vocational centers in their outlook and spirit. It degrades

education and through it the society.

To bring home the pivotal but forgotten role of education we

need to recall that there is a fundamental difference between

human beings and animals. Instincts and physical needs alone

can bring ants, bees, or herds of beasts together to live in a

perfectly functioning animal society. Human beings do not

function that way. They are not constrained by nature to follow

only those ways that are necessary for the harmonious

operation of their society. If they are to form a viable, thriving

society, they must chose to do so. What drives that choice is the

sharing of common goals, beliefs, values and outlook on life.

Without a common framework binding its members, a human

society cannot continue to exist; it will disintegrate and be

absorbed by other societies. Further, the society must ensure

that the common ground will continue to hold from generation

to generation. This is the real purpose of education. The

education system of a society produces the citizens and leaders

needed for the smooth operation of that society, now and into

the future. Its state of health or sickness translates directly into

the health or sickness of the society that it is meant to serve.

Today we find many internal problems --- corruption, injustice,

oppression, crippling poverty --- everywhere we turn in the

Muslim world. If we think about it, we may realize that most of

these problems are man-made. Which is another way of saying

that they are largely traceable, directly or indirectly, to the

education system that produced the people who perpetuate the

problems. The rulers who sell out to foreign powers and

subjugate their people; the bureaucrats who enforce laws based

on injustice; the generals who wage war against their own

people; the businessmen who exploit and cheat; the journalists

who lie, sensationalize, and promote indecencies, they are all

educated people, in many cases "highly" educated people. Their

education was meant to prepare them for the roles they are

playing in real life. And it has, although in a very unexpected

way!

The problem plagues all layers of society. Why are Muslim

communities in the grip of so much materialism today? What

should we expect when our entire education system is

preaching the gospel of materialism? Why have we effectively

relegated Islam to a small inconsequential quarter in our public

life? Because that is precisely where our secular education

system has put it. Why in our behaviour toward each other we

see so little display of Islamic manners and morals? Because our

imported education system is devoid of all moral training. Why

our societies are sick? Because our education system is sick.

This is the real crisis of education. Before we got into this mess

by importing from the Colonial powers what was current and

popular, education in our societies was always the means of

nurturing the human being. Moral training, tarbiya, was always

an inalienable part of it. The ustaz,(teacher), was not just a

lecturer or mere professional, but a mentor and moral guide.

We remembered the hadith then, "No father has given a greater

gift to his children than good moral training." [Tirmidhi]. Our

education system was informed by this hadith. Our darul-

ulooms still maintain that tradition but the number of students

who pass through their gates is minuscule compared to the

secular schools.

In the U.S. and Europe, the schools were started by the church.

Later as forces of capitalism overtook them, they moulded them

into their image. Moral training was a casualty of that takeover.

But capitalism and their political economy did need people

trained to work under these systems. So citizenship training was

retained as an important, though diminishing, component of the

curriculum--- a religion-free subset of the moral training it

displaced. Whatever civility we see here is largely a result of that

leftover component. The imported versions in the Muslim

countries, though, had even that component filtered out. And

the results are visible.

We can solve our problem once we realize our mistakes. The

first purpose of our education system must be to produce

qualified citizens and leaders for the Islamic society. Tarbiya,

real Islamic moral training, must be an integral part of it. This

must be the soul of our education, not a ceremonial husk. All

plans for improving our education will be totally useless unless

they are based on a full understanding of this key fact. This

requires revamping our curricula, rewriting our textbooks,

retraining our teachers, and realizing that we must do all this

ourselves. We do have a rich history of doing it. Are we finally

willing to turn to our own in-house treasures to redo education

the way it should always have been?

OBITUARY AND CONDOLENCE

A number of people have passed away during the period under review. We express our sincere sympathy to

the bereaved families and we share in their loss. We make dua that Allah SWT grant to the families the

strength to bear their irreparable loss and that All SWT grant all the Marhoomeen the highest status in

Jannatul Firdose.

During this period, 2 of our former Presidents and, current sitting Trustees, passed away. Both Marhoom Essop

Ahmed Laher and Marhoom Mohamed Ismail Dajee were stalwarts of our Association.

It is reported by Hazrat Mu’az (RA) that, on the

occasion of his son’s death, Nabi Muhammad SAW

sent him the following message :

“ In the name of Allah the Compassionate, the Merciful.

From Muhammad PBUH to Mu’az Bin Jabal. Peace be on

you. I glorify Allah who has no partner. I pray that Allah

bestow upon you the great reward for this bereavement

and grant you patience, fortitude and give you and us

the courage to be grateful to Him for His favours. The

fact is that our lives, our near and dear ones are sacred

gifts to us from Allah, who has given these in our charge

only temporary. He allows you to benefit from the gifts

for as long as He willed and withdraws them as and

when He willed, and in return for this apparent loss He

will bless you with high rewards of His special favours,

mercy and guidance provided you display fortitude for

His sake and for the sake of the benefits of the

A’akhirah. Therefore I counsel you to have patience. Let

not your wailings bring your rewards to nought and you

to remorse. Be assured that no amount of lamentation

and wailing has ever brought a dead back, nor can it

help do away with grief and sorrow. Allah’s Will is

always done”.

The contribution of Marhoom Essopbhai Ahmed

Laher and Marhoom Mohamed Ismail Dajee to our

Association and the Ummah was enormous. They

have left a legacy which will be difficult to

emulate. The wisdom, courage and charm

displayed by them will be remembered and

cherished. They will always be remembered for

their endearing qualities and will remain an

inspiration to all those who were lucky enough to

know them. Both Marhoom Essopbhai and

Marhoom Mohamedbhai were remarkable

personalities and we are richer for having shared

their values and wisdom.

They were unfailing in executing key

responsibilities entrusted to them and due

recognition of their efforts must be recorded and

acknowledged. They gave up their time and

resources for the benefit of not only Alipurians,

but the Ummah at large.

Marhoom Essopbhai and Marhoom Mohamedbhai

never flinched in the face of adversity. They have

rendered unflinching service to the Alipur Muslim

Association, to the entire Ummah and to society in

general.

We make dua that Allah SWT elevates their status

in Jannah and that Allah SWT grant them, and all

other Marhoomeens, the highest status in Jannatal

Firdose. Ameen.

Marhoom Essopbhai Ahmed Laher (left) and Marhoom

Mohamedbhai Ismail Dajee

To Allah do we belong and to Him is our return.

“Indeed for Allah alone is whatever He takes,

and to Allah alone belongs that which He gives.

And every life with Him has a fixed time.

Therefore bear with patience and be hopeful of

Allah’s pleasure and rewards”.
