From the Director

I am pleased to present the fall brochure which outlines the City of Coronado’s delivery of recreation services. Inside you will find a wide variety of activities and events for the entire family. Below, I have highlighted some new opportunities that our recreation professionals hope you will enjoy over the coming months. As always, our staff and facilities await and we hope you will take advantage of all that Coronado has to offer.

Opening last spring, the John D. Spreckels Center and Lawn Bowling Green is providing our 50 and better residents a haven in the center of town to recreate in. Located on Orange and Seventh Ave, the Center is 9,000 sq. ft. and geared to active adults who want to socialize, stay active, travel and have fun! Prior field trips to the Getty and Ronald Regan Museums were sold out. The facility supervisor, Wendi Garrison, and her team hope you will visit them and become a regular at the Center. I encourage you to drop by, say hello, and sign up for the Spreckels Center Newsletter.

The City also has a new golf professional concessionaire, Brian Smock PGA. Brian’s professional experience coupled with his qualified PGA staff are uniquely positioned to provide the community with an array of junior and adult golf programs and activities, some of which are highlighted in this brochure. Additionally, the pro shop was recently remodeled and stocked with upgraded apparel that sports the City’s new golf logo.

Our goal is to offer programs and places to play where you can enjoy all the beauty that Coronado has to offer. We hope the recreation experience becomes part of your everyday life, and that we can help be a part of that experience. Please take a moment to review this brochure and be sure to “Put Some Play in Your Day.”

SCHOLARSHIPS Program Scholarships are available to Coronado’s youth. We offer one scholarship, per child, of the fee of one program up to $50 maximum. This includes your choice of a class per brochure if funds are available. An application is available at the Community Center, 1845 Strand Way. Also, if you would like to help create an opportunity for a child to participate in a recreation program, contact the Recreation office at 522-7342 or by e-mail at [email protected] to inquire about making a donation.

PARKS MAKE LIFE BETTERThe City of Coronado, along with the California Parks and Recreation Society’s “Parks Make Life Better” logo, reminds us that parks and recreation make lives and communities better now and in the future. Parks give us access to serenity and to the inspiration of nature. They give us outdoor space to play and exercise. They are the best facilities for self-directed and organized recreation. In short, parks and recreation services make lives better for everyone in Coronado.

CHARACTER COUNTSThe City of Coronado, the Coronado Unified School District and the Coronado Chamber of Commerce have teamed up for the Character Counts initiative to empower individuals to make positive choices. The thrust of the program is simple...include the six character traits in our community language – Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. Adopted by communities and organizations throughout the United States, the Coronado Human Relations Commission has brought “Character Counts” to Coronado knowing that the well-being of our society requires all of us to be involved and to do the right thing even when no one is looking.

“LIVE A HEALTHY LIFE…RECREATE!”The “Live A Healthy Life…Recreate” logo identifies programs and activities that provide a health and wellness benefit to the participant. Throughout San Diego County, parks and recreation agencies have joined together in a campaign to create healthy communities and provide opportunities for residents to be physically active. The most common benefit of participation in a recreation program, class, or camp is derived from aerobic exercise. Look for the “Live A Healthy Life…Recreate” logo to find heart healthy programs for you and your family to participate in at the Coronado Community Center.

CORONADO ARMCHAIR TRAVELArmchair Travel is a monthly social gathering of local residents and visitors who are interested in travel. We meet at 6:00 on the third Tuesday of every month in the beautiful Nautilus Room of the Coronado Community Center, 1845 Strand Way. Each month a local speaker shares their experi-ence traveling to a different country. Refreshments reflecting the country to be discussed are served from 6:00-6:45, when our speaker will begin their presentation. This is a wonderful opportunity for community members to meet old friends and make new acquaintances with whom they share a com-mon interest in travel. There is a $5 admission fee, payable at the front desk.

September 19th - Coronado residents Irwin Karp and Ann Bancroft will share their experience “Be-tween Two Poles - Antarctica and Arctic Svalbard.” Their slides will cover 2013 and 2014 trips to the two polar regions on Linblad Expedition’s National Geographic Endeavor.

October 17th - David and Lei Udell will share their recent visit to the other country “down under,” New Zealand.

Armchair Travel is on hiatus over the months of No-vember and December, due to the proximity of the holidays.

January 16th - One of Armchair Travel’s most pop-ular speakers, Leslie Crawford, will share tales of her recent trip across America in a motor home with her husband Don.
