Disinfection fundamentals

The best prevention of epidemics is to use microbiologically clean non polluted water, preferably deep

ground water as drinking water. Unfortunately, in some regions this is not possible for hydro geological or

quantitative reasons. In these regions, surface water is used, which often has to be disinfected. Pathogens

that are killed or removed by adding certain substances to the water, i.e. by disinfecting the water. When

disinfection fails many diseases (typhus, paratyphoid, cholera and diarrhea with vomiting, as well as viral

infections such as hepatitis and poliomyelitis) are transmitted by drinking water. Legionella in shower or

bathing water can provoke pulmonary diseases. Compared to the chemical contamination of water, where

toxicity values are attained only slowly in general, in drinking water epidemics infections spread dramatically in

the whole supply area.

Disinfection with chlorine

The most widespread disinfectant used in the treatment of drinking water is chlorine, which can be applied in

a variety of ways, especially Tiaano® electrolytic chlorine generation. The disinfecting properties of chlorine

are based on the fact that hypochlorous acid (HClO) is produced when it is dissolved in water, according to

the equation is Cl2 + H2O HCl + HClO and depend strongly on the pH value. The best effect is obtained

with pH values less than 7.5

Principle of electrolytic Chlorination

With electrolysis, chlorine is produced directly from a solution of common salt using electricity. The following

reactions take place in the electrolytic cell:

NaCl + 2 H2O 2 NaOH + Cl2 + H2

The chlorine produced reacts immediately with the

caustic soda solution also formed, resulting in a

hypochlorite solution.

Cl2 + 2 NaOH NaCl + NaClO + H2O

The solution generated has a pH value between 8.0 and

8.5, and a maximum equivalent chlorine concentration in

the range of 6 - 8 g/l. It has a half-life of several months,

which makes it ideal for storage in a buffer tank. After

dosing the solution into the water flow, no pH value

correction is necessary. The sodium hypochlorite

dissociation is an equilibrium reaction, resulting in

hypochlorous acid, the efficient disinfectant,

NaClO + H2O NaOH + HClO

The dosing quantity depends on the application as well

as the local regulations. In general, the concentration

after the injection unit is 0.5 to 2 ppm chlorine equivalent.

The benefits of Tiaano® electrolytic Chlorination

Cl2 is available in the form of Sodium Hypo Chlorite as liquid chlorine, leads no harm like Gas Chlorine.

Common salt is the base material, it is easy to store, easily available and not a toxic.

Water, Salt and electricity are needed low operating cost as world-wide use.

Fresh hypochlorite is always on hand – disinfectant does not disassociate like commercial hypochlorite,

lower formation of chlorate as by-product.

Less safety requirements compare with chlorine gas based system.

Approved disinfection method complying with the DWI drinking water regulations.

Lower pH of product compared with commercial hypochlorite reduces scaling of injection points in

hard water areas.

Robust and elementary compounds – low maintenance and long service life. Compared with the

membrane electrolytic cells.

There is no deposit of chemicals in the tank when Sodium Hypochlorite is used.

Requirements for the installation of Tiaano® Chlorinator

Air

The outlet of the exhaust air has to be as close as possible to the electrolytic chlorination

system. The turn-key Tiaano® ECU / P systems are piped, wired, labeled and tested before

delivery. Air dilution fan will be provided, if the system will be higher capacity.

In addition, natural air supply via ventilation hole to the room is vital.

Application of Tiaano® Electrolytic chlorinator

Electro chlorinator is an excellent alternative to chlorine gas or commercial hypochlorite. Typical disinfection

applications of Tiaano Electrochlorinators are …

1. Drinking water treatment

2. Swimming pool water treatment

3. Industrial treatment for cooling towers and process water.

A. Installation of 8 hours portable (dip) type Electrochlorinator Tiaano® ECU / P

o Around the chlorinator, enough space should be left free for operation and maintenance work.

o It is recommended that the room has high level natural ventilation.

o As the small systems till 50 GPH, direct hydrogen vent system is not necessary; however exhaust system

must be compulsory to dilute the leached hydrogen from the chlorinator.

o The internal vent tube has to be piped for the higher capacity chlorinator, to the exterior of the

building. Minimum tube diameter 90 mm. Maximum length of the tubing 10 M. Must be installed

without dips and adequately supported to a safe discharge point.

o Transfer pipe (hypo from reactor to storage tank) should be minimum 32 mm dia.

B. Structure of Tiaano® ECU / P

Tiaano® ECU / P system is supplied as a turn-key solution, only the tubing for the water connection have to be

installed. Tiaano® ECU / P units comprise the Electrolyser and Pulse dozer. Additional equipment which are

required is reaction tank, storage tank for the storage of generated hypo solution, level indicator, dosing

pumps and acid wash system. The size of the storage tank depends on the space available and the amount

of NaClO buffers to rage required. The sizing of the reaction tank also depends on capacity of the system and

the salt filling is to be by manual.

C. Identification of Tiaano® ECU / P

Standard Tiaano® ECU / P systems are available in twelve capacity levels. The choice of the system depends

on the maximum daily chlorine demand (dosing quantity x daily maximum water flow rate).

D. Electrolyser / Cells (anode and cathode assembly)

All our Tiaano® ECU / P range of system are working with DC 12 V Pulse Dozer. System is non-critical in

operation.

Lockable control panel IP-55.

Potentiometer for voltage adjustment.
