(Bday May 9)

Our field trip was a beautiful day and we had lots of fun. It started out rainy so many of us had our boots.

There were not many hikers at Starved Rock but there was lots of mud puddles. Just what kindergartners

like! It got sunny and warm and we ended our day finishing out our Jr. Ranger program by receiving our

badge and stating the State Park pledge with the Ranger. We had a picnic lunch and several games of

freeze tag. Thank you Pim Garcia for the snack and juice for our ride home.

In Science this week we should be starting “God’s Plan for Sea”. The children may bring in baggies of dif-

ferent shells.

Hopefully we will do some planting in the school garden. If you have any seeds for us, we can plant them.

Thursday, May 6, at 4:30, you are invited to the Science and Art open house and Talent Show. Their will

be a few Science activities in our room that your children want to show you. The students may pick up

their sketch books in the Art Room. The Talent Show will be in the Sanctuary. If you have any questions,

see me, please.

We will explore items that float or sink and we have a Super Listening Activity.

The children are to start picking a few stories in our Readers that they might like to read for graduation.

We are working on our poems and memory verses. Graduation is fast approaching and several moms

are busy making it a special time. I am asking all of us to contribute $10 to help with food, drink and

decorations. Also we need to know a count of how many will be guests at the Graduations. Please let

me know how many will come from your family and extended family.

This week we are using stories with addition and/or subtraction facts. We will make tally marks for num-

bers and write our number words. Subtracting all of a number will be practiced. Before and after numbers

will be reviewed. Students will write the correct addition or subtraction fact when shown a concept card.

We will review clocks and count coin combination nickel, dimes, quarters and pennies. There will be an

evaluation.

Kindergarten continued~

In Phonics we will read and write some of the color words. We will make words with blends and spell

them. There will be an evaluation. We will think of and write words which begin with our special sounds

and spell them the way they sound. Sentences will be completed with words we choose. We will review

special sounds and blends. Our new special sounds are “er”, “ir” and “ur” and “oo” as in “book”.

In Bible we will learn about Paul and Silas. They worshipped and praised God in prison. Where can we wor-

ship and praise God? Worship is our present to God. God wants us to tell him about our day, the good and

the not so good things that happen. Paul and Silas were rescued from their sins and Jesus was their Savior.

The ABC’s of faith will be reviewed. We will read in Revelation 7: 9-12 of the description of heaven. We will

discuss what that will be like. Our memory verse is “Praise the Lord. How good it is to sing praises to our

God, how pleasant and fitting to praise Him!” Psalm 147:1

Mrs. Whitlock

1st grade ~ Mrs. Wilson

Bible - This week, we will learn about Saul’s Conversion. Our memory verse is “And we pray that in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please Him in every way; bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God.” Colossians 1:10 Phonics - This week’s special sounds are -y in crystal, and -err in cherry. Math - This week we will learn the 13 addition family facts. Spelling - Please practice List #27 words at home. Last week we had fun with games, hats, ice cream, jokes and sprinkling kindness. Our schedule for this week is: Monday – L – Lego Day - We will have lots of fun Lego activities! Tuesday – M – Music Day – We will make musical instruments! Wednesday – N – Nature Day – We learn all about nature and plant some vegetables in the school gar-den. Thursday – O – Oreo Day – We will have lots of fun Oreo activities! Friday – P – Pajama Day – Wear your pajamas to school!

We will be joining 2nd Grade on a field trip to the Pin Splitter Lanes on Tuesday, May 18th. We will leave in the morning to play at Zearing Park (weather permitting) and have lunch at Zearing Park. Then we will go bowling at Pin Splitter Lanes and return to school before 3pm. Students will need to bring a sack lunch and drink. The Hansen’s are providing transportation with one of their charter buses! Thank you! We need one family to donate 1 package of hot dog buns and one family to donate 1 package of chips from our class to help with the lunch on the last day of school after the fun festival. Please let me know if you would like to donate.

5th grade ~ Mr. Clausen

As our school year draws to a close, I’d like you to know how much I’ve enjoyed having your chil-

dren in my class this year. They have been a delight to teach! Thank you for lending them to me this

year!

This week we are learning about Paul and Barnabas in Bible class. We will focus on encouraging

one another in the Lord. Our verse is 1Thessalonians 5:11: “Therefore encourage one another and

build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” We will recite this verse on Friday. Spelling test

31 will be on Friday as well.

In Phonics and Language class we are learning about dictionaries and alphabetical order. We are

reviewing types of sentences, adjectives and adverbs. In Math class we are continuing to estimate

sums and round numbers to the nearest ten. We are learning to round to the nearest dollar and

how to find one third of a group or number. In health class we are learning about all types of safety.

2nd grade ~ Mrs. Bickett

4th grade ~ Mrs. Odell

We had a great day at our field trip yesterday. Thank you all who donated for the cook-out and who drove. Thank you for making this possible.

Health test on Thursday. We have begun working in the garden. The fifth grade has already spent some time on a couple o f afternoons. Other classes have made plans to begin as well. We would welcome donation of plants or seed from students. Please talk with your student's teacher regarding class plant. Some ideas of things we could use are : cabbage plants tomato plants (4) various flowers broccoli plants 3 bales of straw for mulch 2 bags peat moss, etc.

We are learning I Corinthians 2:9 “No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him”.

We will test on Spelling list 31 tomorrow then move on to 32. We will begin a section on geometry in math. History is taking us to the World Wars. We’ve been studying our respiratory system in health.

We have been learning the Gettysburg Address and we plan to present it Thursday night at the talent program. Ask your child to quote their part, but I think they know way more than just their lines.

The Fourth Graders have been growing some plants and we will have a few to sell May 6 and 7. We have about 30 tomatoes, 8 spider plants and a few aloe vera. The money will go to one of our missionaries that we pray for daily. We hope to help you in your garden planting, too!

Have a great week!
