Our Mission We, the Church of Saint Anne, a Roman Catholic family of faith, centered in the Eucharist and rooted in the Franciscan tradition,

seek to worship God reverently and joyfully; understand and proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ in all we do and say; and build a welcoming and forgiving community serving the needs of all God's people.

BAPTISM OF THE LORD JANUARY 9, 2022

First Reading: Isaiah 42:1-4, 6-7 Second Reading: Acts 10:34-38 Gospel: Luke 3:15-16, 21-22

The opening prayer at Mass for the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is this: Almighty, eternal God, when the Spirit descended upon Jesus at His baptism in the Jordan, you revealed Him as your own beloved Son. Keep us your children born of water and the Spirit faithful to our calling. In our parish reconciliation room in our church, there is a beautiful stained glass window depiction of St. John the Baptist in the act of baptizing Jesus in the Jordan River. There has always been an age old question asking “why was Jesus baptized at all?” It would appear that Jesus’ baptism was unnecessary since he was sinless. St. John the Baptist preached a baptism of repentance. Jesus certainly had no need of repentance. So why we may ask? Some of the possible answers to this age old question would be:

Since Jesus was beginning his public ministry, he wanted to be officially recognized by St. John the Baptist.

Jesus wanted to relate to sinners and teach them that he came to call sinners to repentance, not just the righteous.

Since St. John came from the Aaronic line of priests, Jesus’ baptism would be understood as the foreshadowing of the ultimate sacrifice that would come on the cross.

Jesus wanted to show that St. John’s baptismal ministry was truly from God. Jesus’ baptism would reveal his identity as the Son of God in whom the Father was well

pleased.

The next important question for us to ask is this: Why do we need to be baptized at all? Some of the official answers (taken from the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church) are:

The Church baptizes infants because they are born with original sin. They need to be freed from the power of the Evil One and brought into that realm of freedom which belongs to the children of God (CCC: #258)

Baptism is necessary for salvation for all those to whom the Gospel has been proclaimed and who have had the possibility of asking for this sacrament (CCC: #261).

Baptism takes away original sin, all personal sins and all punishment due to sin. It makes the baptized person a participant in the divine life of the Trinity (CCC: #263).

The last important question or questions we need to ask on this Feast Day is simply this: When and where was I baptized and by whom? Only you and I can provide the answers to these questions. With my thoughts and prayers, on this the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord!

Fr. Sam

REFLECTION

A New Year's Poem Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809-1892)

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky, The flying cloud, the frosty light; The year is dying in the night; Ring out, wild bells, and let him die. Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow; The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true. Ring out the grief that saps the mind, For those that here we see no more; Ring out the feud of rich and poor, Ring in redress to all mankind. Ring out a slowly dying cause, And ancient forms of party strife; Ring in the nobler modes of life, With sweeter manners, purer laws. Ring out the want, the care, the sin, The faithless coldness of the times; Ring out, ring out my mournful rimes But ring the fuller minstrel in. Ring out false pride in place and blood, The civic slander and the spite; Ring in the love of truth and right, Ring in the common love of good. Ring out old shapes of foul disease; Ring out the narrowing lust of gold; Ring out the thousand wars of old, Ring in the thousand years of peace. Ring in the valiant man and free, The larger heart, the kindlier hand; Ring out the darkness of the land, Ring in the Christ that is to be.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION The Baptism of Our Lord “John answered them all, ‘I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming…he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit... ’” (Luke 3:16)

The Catholic Catechism states that “Jesus’ immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God’s will.” In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus – the gift of ourselves. Surrender yourself to God, place your trust in Him and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you for the greater glory of God.

Synod Prayer for the Archdiocese of Newark We stand before You, Holy Spirit, as we gather together in Your name. With You alone to guide us,

make Yourself at home in our hearts; Teach us the way we must go and how we are to pursue it. We are weak and sinful; do not let us promote disorder. Do not let ignorance lead us down the wrong path nor partiality influence our actions. Let us find in You our unity so that we may journey together to eternal life and not stray from the way of truth and what is right. All this we ask of You, who are at work in every place and time, in the communion of the Father and the Son,

forever and ever. Amen. SAINT ANNE SENIORS No Meeting on January 10 & 24, 2022 As it is said "The best laid plans of mice and men". Alas, we are not having a meeting on Monday, January 10th. I received many calls from members of their hesitation to attend the meeting. This is due to the rise of covid cases, some of our members have colds and some are being cautious. I appreciate all the calls and thoughts of what we should do. In conversation with our Executive Committee and Father Joe, we thought it best not to have meetings for the month of January. Therefore no meeting on January 10 or January 24. I will keep you updated as best as I can about February meetings. Any questions call me at 201-791-0172. Stay Healthy stay Happy! UPDATES The next Family Follow Up Gathering is Wednesday, January 26 @ 6 pm in Church. Home Study & Family Catechesis should attend a minimum of 4 gatherings and Summer Faith and Sunday Faith should attend a minimum of 2 gatherings. The next Confirmation Preparation session is Sunday, January 30. We meet at the 6 pm Mass and the formation session is immediately following. All Confirmation Candidates should be accompanied by an adult family member or their sponsor.

The next in classroom Sunday Faith sessions are January 9 and January 23. We gather together at the 9:30 am Mass. After Mass, families should remain in church for brief announcements and a prayer. Then children are dismissed from the church to the school grade by grade.

Sacrament Preparation for Children Our Faith Formation journey is one in which we grow in a deeper relationship with the person of Christ and understanding of the Catholic Church. Preparation for the Sacraments of First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation happen separately from the scheduled Faith Formation Sessions or Catholic School religion class. The young people are enrolled in the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion Preparation sessions once one full year of curriculum has been completed. Traditionally First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion are prepared for and celebrated in 2nd grade, if they were enrolled in Catholic Faith Formation Program or Catholic School the prior year. Young people being presented for the Sacrament of Confirmation (currently Spring of 8th grade) should have attended continuous Catholic faith formation or Catholic School since First Holy Communion. There will be special Parent Meetings and Family/Child Preparation Sessions for all children who choose to receive the Sacraments. Notifications of Meetings and Preparation Sessions will be mailed to families at the appropriate time. If you have not been contacted, please call the Colleen or Claire at 201-791-1616 “The accompaniment of a person on a journey of growth and conversion is necessarily marked by gradualness, in that the act of believing implies a progressive discovery of the mystery of God and an openness and entrustment to him that grows over time.” (Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization, National Directory for Catechesis - 179)

Our children share their knowledge and faith experiences gained at Faith Formation sessions O.M. - I learned about Mother Teresa. She helped many people by feeding and clothing them. J.D. – When you let God into your life, good things happen. A.P. – I practice my prayers with my Mom and Dad. J.S. – God shows us his mercy every day. We shouldn’t be afraid to come to Him.

His arms are always open. C.S. – I learned about the Beatitudes, eight teachings Jesus gave us and path of true happiness. Those that have shared with us are in grades 1, 5 and 8.

HARRISON HOUSE MEAL MINISTRY

Harrison House (HH) is a group home serving the needs of eight people living with HIV. It is located at 230 East Ridgewood Ave., Paramus, NJ on the back campus of Bergen New Bridge Medical Center. St. Anne is one of many churches and charitable organizations preparing and delivering meals to HH for over 25 years. You can volunteer to prepare/deliver a meal once a year (St. Anne commits to the 4th Sunday of every month), once a month, or on any “Open” day during each month where no volunteer has committed to deliver a meal to HH. This ministry is an excellent way to share your faith together as a family, for a Confirmation candidate’s faith project, a group effort, or an individual ministry. Details of preparing/delivering a meal to HH will be provided to you upon your request of the HH Volunteer Information Sheet. First, we need volunteers to sign up for the 4th Sunday of each month in 2022, so please call or email Jeannie Barnett to commit to one St. Anne’s monthly dates: Jan. 23, Feb. 27, Mar. 27, Apr. 24, May 22, June 26, July 24, Aug. 28, Sept. 25, Oct. 23, Nov. 27, Dec. 25. Or check out the weekly bulletin for the HH Notice requesting volunteers for specific “Open” dates during that month to prepare/deliver a meal to HH. Call or email Jeannie Barnett to sign up for one of the 2022 monthly dates above, to receive the HH Volunteer Information Sheet, to be put on the mailing list to receive HH’s monthly meal calendar or for more information: [email protected]; 201-280-0501.

A Quick Look at the Synod on Synodality 2023

Pope Francis announced the Sixteenth Ordinary Synod of Bishops, which will take place in 2023 in Rome. His theme for the Synod is for a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission. The term synodality means walking the same road together. We journey as a Church together, all of us – Pope, bishops, clergy religious, and those on the margins. The mission of Christ can only be accomplished by all of us collaborating together to make the Gospel heard I our time. Every age in Church history has had to figure out the best way to proclaim the Gospel and this is our time.

Pope Francis has asked for an extraordinary task to be done – that is, he wants to hear from every part of the Church throughout the world, those committed to the church, those who have left the Church, never been a part of the church, or who are poor, marginalized and don’t feel welcome in the Church. Some say that this is the largest single consultation in the world! We are all asked to join in and be a part in the ways best for us and to be as inclusive as possible.

In this consultation, Pope Francis asks us to consider this question of proclaiming the Gospel and continuing his mission through prayer and discernment together. His overarching question is: What does the Holy Spirit expect of the Church of the 21st Century? Two subsequent questions to be used at the listening sessions to expound on this question are:

1. How is this “journeying together” happening today in your parish community, campus ministry, university, school, youth group, religious congregation or other area of Church life?

2. How are we “walking together” as a Church, and what steps does the Holy Spirit invite us to take in order to grow in our journeying together?

For our Listening Sessions, which can take place in December until February, we have clarified those questions in order to be more specific to our particular circumstances.

The Synod 2023 will have three phases:

Phase One: The Diocesan phase in which we will all be able to reflect and give feedback to the Archdiocese – December 2021-February 2022

Phase Two: The Continental Phase in which all dioceses will synthesize feedback and send a report to the bishops’ conference in Washington, DC (USCCB) by March 1, 2022. In turn, the USCCB will then synthesize feedback and send a report to the Vatican Synod Committee beginning April 2022.

Phase Three: The Universal phase, which will be the actual Synod of bishops in Rome in October 2023

Walking together, inspired by the Holy Spirit

The official logo of the synodal pathA large, majestic tree, full of wisdom and light, reaches for the sky. A sign of deep vitality and hope which expresses the cross of Christ. It carries the Eucharist, which shines like the sun. The horizontal branches, opened like hands or wings, suggest, at the same time, the Holy Spirit.

The people of God are not static: they are on the move, in direct reference to the etymology of the word synod, which means "walking together". The people are united by the same common dynamic that this Tree of Life breathes into them, from which they begin their walk.

These 15 silhouettes sum up our entire humanity in its diversity of life

situations of generations and origins. This aspect is reinforced by the multiplicity of bright colours which are themselves signs of joy. There is no hierarchy between these people who are all on the same footing: young, old, men, women, teenagers, children, lay people, religious, parents, couples, singles; the bishop and the nun are not in front of them, but among them. Quite naturally, children and then adolescents open their walk, in reference to these words of Jesus in the Gospel: " I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned and revealed them to little children”. (Mt 11:25)

The horizontal baseline: "For a synodal Church: communion, participation and mission” runs from left to right in the direction of this march, underlining and strengthening it, to end with the title "Synod 2021 - 2023", the high point that synthesizes the whole.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving… You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online!

To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a
