Media Notes for Spring 20121. OHSAA Radio Network: The network will broadcast all 12 games from the baseball state tournament. The network is a non-exclusive, commercial-split broadcast available via a 48K stereo broadband connection or an 800 telephone number (32K mono). Program logs are created for each game so local stations can insert their own inventory. Stations can opt into affiliate programs for reduced or waived broadcast fees for regional and state tournament contests they broadcast themselves. Contact Tim Stried or check out www.ohsaa.org/news/Radio/radiohome.asp for more information.

2. Media Photo Service: The OHSAA’s official photographer, Impact Action Sports Photography, can provide media outlets on deadline with photographs from OHSAA state tournament contests at low costs. Impact Action accepts photo assignments from media outlets, who are encouraged to use Impact Action rather than send a stringer. Contact Tim Stried for more details.

3. Softball and Baseball Finals on TV: The OHSAA’s official television partners, SportsTime Ohio and Time Warner Cable, will televise the softball and baseball state championship games. STO will televise the softball finals, while TWC will televise the baseball finals.

4. Weekly Press Releases: The OHSAA will publish a weekly spring sports press release packet beginning May 21. The releases will be posted at OHSAA.org and will only be emailed by request.

5. AP Marketplace: In cooperation with the Associated Press, the OHSAA utilizes the AP Marketplace (www.apexchange.com) to upload various items, such as the weekly computer rankings, regional and state tournament pairings, state tournament recaps and results. For more information, contact Ohio Assistant Bureau Chief Nancy Nussbaum at [email protected] or 614-885-2727.

6. State Tournament Credentials: Please see the link below about the state tournament credential center, and remember that the OHSAA will send a confirmation email memo to each media outlet when processing credential requests. The memo contains important media information such as parking details, credential pick-up locations, etc.

7. Feature Stories Request: Media are asked to email Tim Stried links to any feature stories about sportsmanship or overcoming adversity for posting on OHSAA.org.

8. Credentials to sectional, district and regional tournament contests: Please contact the tournament manager or the appointed media coordinator for that venue. Please visit the respective sport pages at OHSAA.org for more information.

2011 STATE TOURNAMENT RECAP: HILLIARD, Ohio – A pair of 2010 winners repeated as champions and two new champions were crowned at the 2011 OHSAA boys state tennis tournament on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Hilliard Davidson High School. The tournament site was moved to Hilliard due to construction being done on The Ohio State University’s Stickney Tennis Center. Chris Diaz, a senior from Columbus Bishop Watterson, won the Division II singles championship, defeating Ian Wagner of Columbus Wellington School 6-1, 6-0. It was the second consecutive singles state title for Diaz who, for the second year in a row, also won without losing a set in any of his matches. Diaz was also a Division I doubles champion in 2008 and a doubles runner-up in 2009. Also winning a championship for the second year in a row was the Division I doubles team from Upper Arlington, as senior Billy Weldon and sophomore Stu Little defeated Miguel Cepeda and Luke Tsai of Mason 6-3, 6-1. The win gives Upper Arlington its state-best 16th doubles championship. Weldon and Little became only the 10th two-time doubles champions in OHSAA state tournament history, regardless of division. In the Division II doubles competition, seniors Lou Konstan and Alex Aleman of Cuyahoga Falls Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy were 6-1, 6-4 victors over John Kidd and Alex Swick of Lima Central Catholic. The win marks the CVCA duo’s second Division II doubles state championship in three years, having also won in 2009. Konstan and Aleman are the 11th two-time doubles champions in OHSAA State tournament history, regardless of division. Toledo St. John’s Jesuit senior Evan Bechtel won the Division I singles state championship, defeating Zach Mueck of Liberty Township Lakota East 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. Bechtel successfully transitioned into this year’s singles tournament pool after competing in the state doubles tournament in 2010. Mueck, a junior, also finished as Division I runner-up last year.

STATE TOURNAMENT PAIRINGS AND RESULTS ONLINE: Complete statewide brackets for all divisions — beginning at the sectional tournament level — are available on the OHSAA web site (www.ohsaa.org) by going to “Sports” dropdown box in the left-hand corner of the home page followed by “Baseball.” The website will also include score updates following each day. State pairings will be available at the same location on the site on Sunday, May 27, provided there are no weather delays.

MEDIA CREDENTIALS: Complete the official credential application form and fax it (or scan and email it) to Tim Stried at the OHSAA office (fax 614-267-1677, [email protected]). The deadline to submit requests is 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 29. Credentials will be held for pickup at the home plate entrance at Huntington Park. Please be prepared to show company identification. If the team you are covering wins its semifinal game, the same credential is valid for the championship game.

NOTE ON MEDIA CREDENTIALS: Please note that parents, school or “team” photographers and coaches may not receive media credentials to OHSAA state tournaments. Media outlets found to be in violation of this regulation could have reduced access at future state tournaments.

CREDENTIAL CONFIRMATION: Upon processing an approved media credential application, the OHSAA will send a confirmation email to the media applicant. The confirmation email contains important information about the state tournament and should be forwarded to all members of the media covering the state tournament from that media outlet. The OHSAA will also post a list on its website of those media members who have been approved. The list will be posted by 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 30.

PARKING: Parking is on a first-come, first served basis in the public lots around the stadium. Typical cost is $3. There are no designated media parking lots and media must pay to park as the City of Columbus controls the parking lots in the Arena District.

MEDIA WORKSPACE: The top two rows of table seating behind home plate are reserved for media use. Reporters may continue working at their seats after each game. The stadium’s media work room is located down the third-base line off the main hallway. Huntington Park has free wireless internet access throughout the stadium.

BROADCAST INFORMATION: Broadcast rights fees must be paid before the game. Collection will occur at your broadcast location. While media seating is ample, there are only two phone lines

available for broadcasts (must use an 800 number, a credit card, call collect or have the station call you). The OHSAA & Joe Santry will coordinate seating placement for broadcast crews. Postgame shows are asked to be brief if another broadcast crew is waiting for a phone line that was being used during the previous game.

PHOTOGRAPHS AVAILABLE: Media outlets unable to send a full-time photographer to a state tournament are encouraged to use the OHSAA’s official photographer, Impact Action Sports Photography. Their website is www.ImpactActionPhotos.com (click on the media request form). Contact Joe Maiorana ([email protected]) or Ben Barnes ([email protected]) with any questions.

AP MARKETPLACE AVAILABLE: Media outlets that are Associated Press members will have access to regional and state tournament pairings, as well as box scores from all 12 state tournament games and recaps of the four championship games. Division I- Lakota East Wins First Baseball Title In its first trip to the state tournament, unranked Lakota East leaves as champion after defeating fifth-ranked Perrysburg 6-2 in the 2011 OHSAA Division I Baseball State Championship Saturday at Huntington Park. For the Thunderhawks (23-7), senior pitcher Evan Hills kept Perrysburg hitters off balance the entire game, surrendering only two runs in a complete game effort. The two runs Hills did surrender came in the bottom of the seventh in an effort by Perrysburg to come back. Lakota East began the second inning and its scoring with senior Mitch Geers lining a single up the middle and senior Craig Thomson hitting a double to left centerfield. After consecutive outs senior Zak Kloenne lined a single into right field collecting two RBI. The Thunderhawks added one in the 4th when junior Blake Wilder singled in a run. The top of the seventh included all-important insurance runs for Lakota East, which scored three more times on two hits and an error. In the bottom half of the inning Perrysburg threatened with a comeback beginning with senior Ryan Young hitting a single up the middle, followed by a walk and a pinch-hit double by freshman Mark Delas scoring a run. Yellowjacket senior Matt Garbig’s sacrifice fly two batters later plated Perrysburg’s second and final run. The state championship is Lakota East’s first title in baseball. Perrysburg (26-4) finishes as runner-up for the first time in its second state tournament appearance.

Division II- DeSales Holds Off Hoban to Win Division II Baseball In a back and forth championship game, Columbus St. Francis DeSales held on to defeat Akron Archbishop Hoban 9-8 in the 2011 OHSAA Division II state baseball championship game Saturday at Huntington Park. In the bottom of the sixth inning with a runner on, DeSales junior Zak Decamp sent a ball over the wall in left-center field to put the Stallions ahead two runs. The towering shot proved to be the difference maker in the game. Scoring began early and often for both teams with four Hoban base runners crossing the plate in the top half of the first and three DeSales base runners crossing in the bottom half. The Stallions scored three more in the bottom of the second, one in the bottom of the third and the Decamp home run in the bottom of the sixth. Hoban scored two more in the top of the third and one more in the top of the seventh, but was unable to push across the tying run as a result of solid defense from shortstop Brennan Schlabig. With the championship game victory DeSales finishes the season 21-9 winning its first state baseball title since 1979. Archbishop Hoban (18-9) finishes as state runner-up for the second time in school history. They had previously accomplished the feat in 1993.

Division III- Canton Central Catholic Takes Second State Crown Unranked Canton Central Catholic jumped out to a 5-0 lead, then scored two runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie and win the DIII state baseball championship over third-ranked Cincinnati Madeira Sunday at Huntington Park. The game was originally scheduled for Saturday evening, but storms in Central Ohio caused a postponement until Sunday morning. The championship is the second for Central Catholic (26-8), which also won it in 2008. Madeira (23-2) was aiming for its second title (1999). Central Catholic used four hits, a walk and an error to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Three more hits and another error in the top of the third inning allowed the Crusaders to push their lead to 5-0. That lead was erased when Madeira scored twice in the third and three times in the fifth, but CCC got singles from three seniors – Tyler Triner, Joe Tann and Ryan Pack – in the top of the sixth to produce two runs and the win. Tann (11-1) earned the win for Central Catholic with three innings of scoreless relief. Pack went 4-for-4 with three runs batted in.

Division IV- Minster Wins First State Baseball Title Minster scored early and late to secure a 6-0 victory over New Middletown Springfield in the 2011 OHSAA Division IV State Baseball Championship game Saturday at Huntington Park. The championship game victory marks the first time the Wildcats have won the title. Minster (23-8) scored three runs in the top of the first off of Springfield starting pitcher senior Brad Ferraro, who walked five batters in the inning including the bases loaded to begin the game. The Wildcats did not score again until the top of the seventh when they collected three runs on four hits. Leading the way for Minster were seniors Ben Heitbrink and Craig Purpus, which both went 1-for-3 with two RBI. Springfield (18-7) could not put anything together offensively to mount a charge during the game. Minster sophomore Adam Niemeyer pitched four scoreless innings while allowing only three hits and striking out three. Junior Austin Knapke matched his teammate’s effort on the mound, throwing the last three innings for the Wildcats to collect the win while only allowing two Tiger base runners. Minster now holds its first state championship trophy in baseball alongside the runner-up trophy from the title game in 2003. Springfield has now finished as runner-up four times most recently in 2009, also in 1980 and 1930.

Division I- North Canton Hoover comes from behind to claim fifth state championship Seeking its first state softball championship, Gahanna Lincoln took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but four-time state champion North Canton Hoover plated runs in four separate innings to come back for a 4-2 win and its fifth crown in the Division I championship game at Akron Firestone Stadium Saturday. The sixth-ranked Hoover Vikings (29-3) have now won state championships in each of their five trips to the state tournament. Hoover senior pitcher Ashley Hall overcame the two-run first inning to strike out three and walk just one, while allowing six hits. Sophomore Mackenzie DiPietro led the Viking offense with three hits and an RBI. After dropping its last six regular-season games, Lincoln (20-11) regrouped for a long tournament run, which ended with the school’s second state runner-up finish. In the circle, senior Brandis Fishel struck out two and walked two. One of her runs was unearned.

Division II- Poland Seminary scores late for 4-0 victory over LaGrange Keystone Scoring four runs in their last two at bats, including two unearned, fourth-ranked Poland Seminary claimed a 4-0 win over No. 1-ranked LaGrange Keystone in the OHSAA Division II softball state championship game Saturday at Akron Firestone Stadium. The game was scoreless through five innings before Poland (24-3) got an unearned run in the top of the sixth. The Bulldogs tacked on three more in the top of the seventh on their way to their first state championship in their third appearance in the state tournament. Poland junior pitcher Erin Gabriel (16-1) was dominant, holding Keystone to just one hit while fanning 10 and walking one. Junior Emily Chandler and sophomore Marissa Trevis both had two hits for the Bulldogs. Junior Kenzie Conrad (22-2) pitched well for Keystone (32-2), striking out four and surrendering seven hits. The Wildcats were making their 12th appearance in the state tournament and were aiming for their third title (2006, 1999).

Division III- Warren Champion tops Baltimore Liberty-Union, 11-2, to win fourth title Top-ranked and undefeated Warren Champion erupted for 10 runs in the fifth inning on its way to an 11-2 win over third-ranked Baltimore Liberty-Union Saturday in the OHSAA Division III softball state championship game at Akron Firestone Stadium. It marks the fourth state title for Champion (27-0), which got a state tournament-record three triples from senior shortstop Tawny Rogers, including two in the Golden Flashes’ big fifth inning. She drove in four runs on the day, while senior Emilee Hohvart drove in three runs and junior Haley McAllister continually got things started with four hits from the lead-off position. Champion junior pitcher Lindsay Swipas scattered six hits and struck out 10 over seven innings to wrap a 19-0 season. The Golden Flashes also won state titles in 1994, 1980 and 1978 and were state runners-up in 2006. Liberty-Union (27-3) was in the state tournament for the first time. Junior pitcher Sarah Klopfer suffered the loss to end her season 27-2 to earn the decision in all but one of the Lions’ games this season.

Division IV- Strasburg-Franklin tops Convoy Crestview, 3-1, to claim sixth crown Strasburg-Franklin overcame two weather delays and a pesky Convoy Crestview squad to notch a 3-1 win in the OHSAA Division IV softball state championship game Saturday night at Firestone Stadium. The state title is the sixth for the Tigers (26-2), which ended the season unranked but made a run to their 12th state tournament and joined teams from 1987, 1988, 1989, 1991 and 2009 to win it all. They are one of only five schools in OHSAA history own six or more state titles. Strasburg-Franklin scored all three of its runs in the third inning and senior Kasey Gerber (21-1) made them stand up with seven innings of four-hit, one run pitching. She struck out 12 and walked none. Only one of the runs allowed by Crestview senior pitcher Maddie Preston (17-3) was earned. She struck out three and walked two. The fifth-ranked Knights (21-5) were playing in their 9th state tournament and were seeking their 2nd title.

Gause also anchored the Raiders’ third place 4x200 meter relay team (1:39.63) and second-place 4x400 meter relay team. In addition to Gause, both relay teams also consisted of Faith Washington, Kacia Grant and Monie Jenkins. Washington placed third in the 300 meter hurdles (41.99). The Lancers’ 4x800 meter relay team of Travis Hawes, Jaleel Hytchye, Kevin Kleusener and Ethan Bokeno took first place (7:46.74), in addition to Bokeno placing second in the 800 meter run and Rodriguez Coleman placing third in the 300 meter hurdles.
