BRIEF BIOGRAPHY

The author graduated as a geological engineer with thesis on gemmology in 1984, from the Engineering

Faculty of Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir. He received his M.Sc. (1988) and Ph.D. (1996) in the mineralogy-

petrography with thesis on gemmology, from the same University.

He has begun to lecture (1984) on mineralogy and gemmology in “Gemmology and Jewellery

Programme” of Izmir Multidisciplinary Vocational School at Dokuz Eylul University. He has had for thirty

years of experience in mineralogy, gemmology, and material education. He is currently associate professor

as senior staff gemmologist, president of the Programme, and director of its Gemmological Testing

Laboratory (DGL).

Currently the author is embarked on a program of systematic detailed study of the major gemstone

occurrences of Turkey. Thus, his current research studies are on the gemstone-mineral species of Turkey,

especially geological occurrences and gemmological and mineralogical characteristics of the diaspore, fire

opal, amethyst, smoky quartz, kammererite, turkiyenite (purple jade), chalcedonies, agates, dendritic and

common opals, chrysoprase, and petrified wood widely found in Turkey, using confocal Micro-Raman, all

kinds of luminescence spectra, XRD, chemical analyses, atomic force microscopy, FT-IR, SEM.

On the other hand, the author is a member of the Turkish Association for the Conservation of the

Geological Heritage.

The author has published about 135 scientific papers (in English and Turkish) including 7 books (in

Turkish), 2 research papers (in Turkish), and 2 TSE standards (in Turkish) on these mineral varieties of

Turkey.
