GooD LAN!l.-Two or three miles east from Lake Washington, aud about ten miles from this city, is a large tract of land known as the big born, where many years ago a forest fire almost cleared the lamd ready for the plow. The portion of this cleared land through which the road from Lake Washington to Squak ~:Uough runs, is of poor 'lual· ity, bot a short distance from this road are tracts where the land is of good quality, well watered, and in many places all ready for the plow. This body of land is but a short dis· tance frum this city. with a good roa.lleading to Lake Washington, and· is probably the beat opportoni· ty for a settlement in the county. STRANGERS .- There are at present large number of strangers in this <lity, some to ottend the District Court, just adjourned, some on ac· count of the revival meetings, some are members of the Baptist. Aasocia· tion, and others are here to attend the Republican and Temperance conventions. Among these are per­sons from nearly all portions of the Sound and from as far as the Fraser river valley, British Colombia .. The effect is to give our streets a hvely appearance, from the large number of people who are continually paaa· ing. Bv next week most of tbePe strangers will have retu:ned totheir homes, leaving our streets with about the usual number of people visible.

This wonderful invention performed fully all that was claimed for it, although many were disap­pointed il1 the volume of the sound, forgetting that the machine is yet in its infancy. So many descrip­tions of the invention have already been published in our columns that we will not again afflict one on our readers, but recommend all to go and seo it work for themselves.

NEw BoATS.-1\Iessrs. Tierney & Co., have the contract for building two boats for the· U. S. Revenue cutter Oliver Wolcott. One of these boats is • cnUer, 25 feet in length by 6 feet, four inches beam, and 2 feet, 4 inches depth. She is being built at the boat yard of John Yarno. Her keel is of Eastetn oak, her frame of Steilacoom oak and her sides of Pnget Sound cedar. The model and workmanahip are very fine. Mr. Yarno has built some very fine boats,since his residence in Seattle. The other boat, a dingy 18 feet in length, by 4 feet, 10 inch· es in beam and 1 foot 10 inches deep, is being bnilt at Robinson's boat yard .
