Transcript of Horizons Greater Washington

The gap in academic performance between low-income and higher-income students in Washington, DC, is one of the highest in the nation. The consequence of this achievement gap is that only 60% of the region’s low-income youth graduate from high school. Only one in three goes to college.
Horizons helps students beat these odds. 100% of Horizons Greater Washington students graduate from high school and 85% go to college. These students are breaking the cycle of poverty. They are productive members of their communities. They make us proud!
HGW provides underserved children access to high-quality academics through
Mission Horizons Greater Washington develops
public-private partnerships between
independent and public school
communities to provide academic, cultural,
and recreational programs designed to
empower economically disadvantaged
students to realize their full potential.
HGW is committed to the development of
the whole child by providing experiences
that build problem-solving skills, foster
awareness of community responsibility,
instill respect for oneself and others, and
encourage a life-long interest in learning.

engaging summer programs. This prevents the knowledge and skills acquired during the school year from “going on vacation” between June and September. HGW students significantly advance their reading and math proficiency during the six-week HGW summer program.
Beginning in Kindergarten, HGW blends academics with arts, sports, and cultural enrichment. Research confirms that this is the most effective approach for summer learning programs aimed at closing achievement gaps. HGW encourages students to return for nine consecutive summers in order to benefit from the cumulative gains in skills and abilities that enhance the odds for a lifetime of success.

Emily Beckwith Wins Horizons’ Lyn McNaught Teaching Award Horizons Greater Washington is thrilled that Emily Beckwith, Maret Site Teacher, has been named one of three nationwide winners of Horizons National’s Lyn McNaught Teaching Award. The prestigious citation, named after Horizons’ Founding Director Lyn McNaught, celebrates Horizons teachers who exemplify leadership, commitment, educational excellence, and compassion.
During the academic year, Emily is a Physical Education teacher and coach for grades K–12 at Maret. She began working with Horizons five summers ago as a co-teacher in the first grade classroom. She quickly understood how “reading/writing/math” mesh with the whole child and has effectively used her PE background to help students develop large motor skills in tandem with small motor skills. For the past two years, Emily has served as a lead third grade teacher for HGW.
“Emily’s warmth, discipline, and interest in her own ongoing learning, make her classroom a well structured, easy-going learning environments for young learners.”
Students caught in the achievement gap:
Are Six timeS more likely to drop out of high school
Have a 51% CHanCe of being unemployed
Are more likely to drop out of school, costing the nation $260 Billion per year in increased crime, welfare, and healthcare costs, and decreased lifetime earnings
It’s a fact!“I could not have predicted what great progress and success the Horizons Greater Washington students are achieving. To share in this report that so many of our students have completed high school, and that our impact extends to HGW students now enrolled in college, brings me unimaginable pride and joy. Our students are exceptional in so many ways. We expect the world to reinforce this message as our HGW graduates exceed every expectation, lead their peers in their chosen fields, and give back to the community as thriving adults.”
Brenda Jews
President, Horizons Greater Washington
We extend our thanks to our entire faculty and staff, whose extraordinary commitment allows us to transform young lives, summer after summer and on Saturdays throughout the academic year.

Eleven years ago, a kindergarten student named Rafi Rosario spent his first of many summers at Horizons. Rafi continued at Horizons through eighth grade and returned in 2013 to work as a Horizons Assistant Teacher (HAT) at St. Patrick’s. That wasn’t Rafi’s only important 2013 accomplishment: he graduated from Bell Multicultural High School in June and in September set off to continue his studies at Lincoln University.
His mother, a single parent, raised Rafi. He credits Horizons for “filling in the blanks” that can overwhelm a working parent, such as field trips, art programs, and college tours. Rafi flourished through one-on-one interactions with supportive adults like Kiki Sweigert and Joan Kerrigan, who lent him continuity and support.
Recognizing that reading, writing, and math were instrumental to his Horizons experience, Rafi particularly enjoyed off-site visits to places like Glen Echo and the University of Maryland. “The college trips were especially helpful. No other program took kids to see colleges in middle school. When I started to visit colleges in high school, I knew what to expect. Through Horizons, I had already seen six area colleges,” explains Rafi.
Rafi credits Horizons for helping him succeed in high school, preparing him to take several AP courses, including English. He also came to value the sense of unity, achievement, and finding the “fun” in education that are touchstones of the Horizons experience.
In high school, Rafi played Junior Varsity and Varsity Baseball and launched his own blog, “Ralph’s Week in Sports.” His career goal is to remain involved in sports, as a professional player or journalist.
Rafi applied to several colleges and was accepted by half of them. Clearly, he’s prepared, “I’m excited about the adventures waiting for me in college. And I’m thankful for the opportunities that Horizons provided along the way. Thank you for this wonderful program.”

“Horizons gave me so much and I felt like it was a must to come back to the program and give back. I am excited to be able to be a positive role model to these kids from the same background as me and show them all they can accomplish.”

Fair Chance Selects Horizons Greater Washington as 2013 Partner
Thank you, Horizons Alumni! We are so proud of our HGW alumni who came back to serve as HATs (Horizons Assistant Teachers) for summer 2013. our nine alumni HATs were (from left to right): Rafi Rosario, Kenneth Guerrero, Antonella ocana, Thuyen Huynh, Maryam Hassan, Ariela Garcia-Queche, Kelly Reyes, Iliana Contreras and Dahir Hassan.
REGGIE GRANT, a Fair Chance Capacity Building and Training Specialist attends the HGW Spring Benefit.
This spring, Horizons was selected out of a pool of 25 applicants for up to two years’ worth of free coaching and organizational support through the expertise of the nonprofit Fair Chance. Fair Chance’s mission is to strengthen the sustainability of nonprofit organizations that transform the lives of children and youth in underserved communities in Washington, DC. To this end, Fair
Chance annually selects up to 10 community-based organizations and provides them with hundreds of hours of free support to build stable organizational frameworks, robust leadership, and financial sustainability to better serve the community’s young people.
The results of a Fair Chance partnership are impressive: on average, Fair Chance
partners double the number of children and youth they serve and 97% of Fair Chance partners say that the partnership made their organization more stable, efficient and effective. We greatly appreciate the strides we’ve made to date with Fair Chance and are excited to see the results of our partnership culminate in our Fair Chance graduation in Spring 2014.

For the third consecutive year, HGW’s lead corporate sponsor, Profit Investment Management, hosted a fun-filled, two-day event that raised funds as well awareness for Horizons Greater Washington. The event included a festive kick-off dinner on Sunday, September 29, followed by a golf tournament on Monday, September 30. Among the guests from HGW were Board President Brenda Jews, board member John King, and long-time HGW supporter and Site Director Kiki Sweigart. HGW’s Executive Director, Maria Barry spoke about the organization and its far-reaching impact and HGW graduates Deja Bennett and Taryn Bennett shared their stories. It was a winning event for HGW on many levels: Kiki Sweigart won the tournament’s challenging Closest to the Pin contest. Congratulations!
Many, many thanks to the young girls whose generous annual support is so important to Horizons Greater Washington! GIRLS ON THE RUN is a youth development program for students in grades 3–8. Last year, the Maret GOTR team of third and fourth graders hosted a bake sale as part of their ongoing service to HGW. Last year’s event, staged outsides DC’s iconic Politics and Prose bookstore, raised over $880; $500 was spent on books for HGW and the balance paid for goggles for the Horizons swim program. Thank you, “GIRLS!”

Subway® Supplies Student LunchesSubway Restaurants partnered with HGW last summer by providing 1,920 lunches to help feed our Norwood campers and staff. Subway Restaurants chose to partner with Horizons because of our work in helping to bridge the gap between lower- and higher-income students. The children and teachers enjoyed Subway’s healthy meals and HGW extends sincere thanks to Subway.
Norwood’s student volunteers were also generous to HGW, raising $825 to purchase new books.

Look out Hollywood: students from HGW might give you some competition! This year, Horizons National sponsored its first video competition. Each of the 31 Horizon affiliates, nationwide, entered the challenge. And the winner? Horizons Greater Washington!
The video was produced by rising ninth grade students Ahmad Hassan, Jonathan
Fuentes, Taryn Bennett and Deja Bennett. Taylan Tuncata, a Maret School sophomore, assisted as the production manager, working with the creative team thrice weekly for three weeks last summer. The students interviewed other HGW students from Norwood, St. Patrick’s, and Maret as well as many teachers and several parents. Their aim: to show the positive, transformative impact HGW has on students’ lives and what the HGW opportunity means to those enrolled.
The video can be enjoyed on the website.

Being selected for inclusion in the Catalogue for Philanthropy is a milestone achievement for a charity. Almost every non-profit organization in the Washington area is considered for the honor; a mere 365 pass the exacting review process. Since its founding in 2003, the Catalogue has raised nearly $21 million for its member organizations.
Horizons Greater Washington is honored to be one of the Catalogue’s select members for 2012-2013. The publication is a valuable guide to charitable giving, connecting worthy organizations with generous philanthropists. But there’s more! The Catalogue’s staff works closely with its members, to educate and empower the charities at no cost.
Students, teachers, staff: these are the backbones of Horizons Greater Washington. But the extra energy, enthusiasm, and impetus for our programs come from the dedicated Horizons Councils at Norwood, St. Patrick’s, and Maret. Horizon’s welcomes your involvement! Please contact the following people to learn more about how you can become involved.

Financial ContributorsEven with the vital contribution of campus facilities from Maret, Norwood, and St Patrick’s Episcopal Day School, the Horizons program costs approximately $3,000 per student, per year. We would not be able to reach the number of students we reach, or serve them as well as we do, without the generous support of our donors. To each and every one of you, a heartfelt “Thank you.”
