Important 2021-22 Registration/Verification
It seems like summer just started; however, the calendar tells us that the start of school is just around the corner. Bennington Public Schools will start classes on Wednesday, August 18, with 11:40 A.M. - 12:00 P.M. dismissal times. We are looking forward to opening school with fewer restrictions than during the previous school year and being able to welcome families back into our schools
again. We look forward to the daily accomplishments of our students and staff as we work together toward our common goal of preparing all students to meet the challenges of the future. This publication is designed to provide you with important information related to the start of school. We hope you find this document both informative and helpful.

Students entering 7th grade• Must be current with the above vaccinations• AND receive 1 dose of Tdap (must contain pertussis booster)
Students transferring from outside the state at any grade• Must be immunized appropriately according to the grade entered.
School PhysicalsNebraska law requires children upon entry into the beginner grade, 7th grade,
or transferring from an out-of-state school, to have a physical examination within six months prior to school entrance.
Nebraska law requires children entering the beginner grade or transferring from an out-of-state school to provide proof of vision evaluation within six months prior to school entrance. This evaluation is to include testing for amblyopia, strabismus, internal, and external eye health, and visual acuity.
What this means to students/families:Out of state transfer students and kindergartners must get a physical and
vision exam prior to the start of school. These students get the two-sided form.Returning 7th graders and 7th graders transferring within the state need the
one-sided form that is indicated for 7th graders. There is the possibility that some 7th graders will be transferring from out-of-
state and these students need both physical and vision exams and must also use the two-sided form.
Regarding the vision exam: The elements of this eye exam can be done by any health care provider (including MDs, ODs, PAs, APRNs) and DOES NOT require an eye specialist. Of course an exam by an eye specialist is also acceptable, but it is not mandatory to see one to meet this requirement.
All students in 8-12th grade and plan to participate in BPS athletics will be required to turn in an athletic physical form.

All students attending Bennington Public Schools are assigned a Chromebook for daily use. Elementary students do not bring their Chromebooks home, but Middle and High School students carry these daily. Cooperative loss insurance is available for Middle and High School students to purchase for $20. This is an annual program that covers the student’s device in case of damages. The insurance may be purchased through myschoolbucks on the school’s website. For more information or questions, you may email the Technology Department Coordinator, Mr. Rob Uchtman, at [email protected].
The Bennington School District values its volunteers and welcomes guests. For the safety and well-being of students, all volunteers and guests must check in at the main office of each school to sign in, screen for COVID-19, and be issued a guest pass.
All staff at Anchor Pointe Elementary, Bennington Elementary, Heritage Elementary, and Pine Creek Elementary will welcome families “Back-To-School” in person on Tuesday, August 17th. To provide adequate space and allow for social distancing, we will be scheduling families to attend based on their last name. August, 2021 Horizons
The Bennington community passed a $72.0 million bond issue in March of 2020. Proceeds from the sale of these bonds are being used to construct a fifth elementary and a second middle school southwest of 168th and Military, add four classrooms to Pine Creek Elementary, expand and modify athletic facilities at the high school, add
administrative space to the district office, and remodel, refurbish or expand several facility needs in the district. Many of the small projects were completed in the summer of 2020. In addition to these projects, the district is seeking to purchase additional land for a sixth elementary and a second high school site.
Elementary #5 is located southwest of 168th and Military. This 67,750 square foot facility is designed similar to Pine Creek, Heritage and Anchor Pointe Elementary facilities. This elementary facility will have 21 general classrooms for K-5 students with separate art, music, and PE areas along with a flex space, media center, and special education classrooms. Elementary #5 will have separate secure entrances and a playground with additional land for youth activities. The Elementary #5 project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2022.
ELEMENTARY #5
MIDDLE SCHOOL #2
Middle School #2 is located southwest of 168th and Military. This 131,500 square foot facility is similar to the current middle school located southeast of 168th and Bennington Road with one exception. The new middle school is designed to expand from a capacity of 750 students to 975 students with the addition of nine classrooms in the future (scan the QR code to see list of expansion changes). This middle school facility will have 30 general classrooms with accommodating intervention and special education classrooms, additional classroom space for many fine arts and other electives, a media center, and two gyms with appropriate locker room space. Middle School #2 will have a separate track and field and additional land for youth activities. The Middle School #2 project is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2022.
HIGH SCHOOL SITE & SUPPORT IMPROVEMENTS
The Board of Education decided to expand the high school stadium with the understanding this facility would be the competition site for two high schools in the future. Construction is underway to add a concession stand, restroom and press box to the softball facility. The southeast high school parking lot is being replaced because it was over 16 years old and was plagued by underground water issues. The district is also expanding our current transportation warehouse and parking to accommodate future growth. These construction projects are scheduled for completion in 2021 or the summer of 2022.
PINE CREEK ELEMENTARY EXPANSION
The Pine Creek Elementary attendance center is the smallest geographically in the District, yet home to the highest percentage of students per residence/home. Given this information, the Board of Education made the decision to expand this facility to accommodate four additional classrooms. Construction of the classroom addition at Pine Creek Elementary will be completed this summer. The addition of four classrooms will increase the capacity from 480 to 575 students.
OTHER PROJECTS SUPPORTED BY THE 2020 BOND ISSUE
Many smaller projects were completed this past year. These included, but were not limited to; security system equipment upgrades at Heritage Elementary, installing underground fiber to upgrade internet connections for three southern elementary schools and purchasing additional technology infrastructure. Other smaller projects scheduled to be completed this year or next summer are: adding administrative space to the district office and completing off-site street development for our two newest facilities at 168th and Military. The district also has plans to purchase additional land for future school sites.
Construction Update
August, 2021 Horizons
The 2020-2021 school year brought about many challenges and unknowns as the BPS community navigated unfinished learning from the previous school year and a hybrid model of instruction this year. Teachers, students, and parents/guardians facilitated unprecedented safety protocols, interrupted attendance due to illness or exposure, and individualized student academic and social impact. At times this year, our persistence was tested and obstacles
seemed to be unconquerable. Through this adversity, our goal to maintain high expectations and continuous academic growth never waivered.
Upon completion of the 2020-2021 school year, student academic results on NWEA MAP Growth assessments indicated we have much to celebrate. BPS kindergarten through ninth-grade student achievement in the areas of reading and math paralleled previous school years. These outcomes negated
the “loss of learning” due to COVID-19 many districts nationwide have reported. As you can see in the graphs above, Bennington’s student progress remained consistent when comparing assessment results from spring 2019 to spring 2021. Limited or no dip in achievement was present. Persistence and dedication to continued high-quality education and a commitment to student progress during the pandemic deserve accolades for all those involved.
As we enter another school year with the continued consideration of the COVID-19 Pandemic, we want to provide transparency and guidance to ensure the safest environment for all of our staff, students, community members, and visitors. The updated Return to Learn Plan is posted on our district website. This plan continues to be fluid as we continue to receive updated guidance from health departments.
At this time, the school district plans to open the school at Tier 1 or the Green Tier. This means we hope to get back to as much pre-pandemic normalcy as we possibly can. Bennington Public Schools continues to meet with local health departments as well as surrounding school districts to ensure we are as informed as possible. The major changes to the plan, are as follows: (1) Masks will no longer be mandatory, (2) Remote Learning as
we experienced it during the 2020-2021 school year will no longer be offered, (3) DCHD has removed the risk dial as a resource for determining COVID-19 risks within the county and (4) Facilities will be opened back up at full capacity for outside usage and visitor opportunities. While we are opening our doors back up to all, we are still following the guidance of local health departments when it comes to quarantining students and staff.
As of July, 2021, the most current quarantine guidelines for a student or staff member that has been in close contact with an individual who has contracted COVID-19, are as follows:
A. No Quarantine = Individual is vaccinated or proof of a positive antibody test within the last 90 Days. Individuals may stay at school, and no mask is required.
B. 7 Day Quarantine Rule = Individual
has proof of a negative COVID-19 test five days or more from last exposure. Individuals may return after seven days from contact and may be required to wear a mask until Day 14.
C. 10 Day Quarantine Rule = Individual chooses not to be tested. Individuals may return after ten days from exposure, if symptom free and may be required to wear a mask until Day 14.
D. 14 Day Quarantine Rule = Individual does not choose any of the three options above, they may not return until after Day 14.
Did you know? Individuals who are 12 years of age or older are eligible for the COVID-19 Vaccine. If you are interested in being vaccinated or having your child vaccinated, please reach out to your healthcare provider, the Douglas County Health Department, or Children’s Omaha to schedule an appointment.

Bennington Public Schools’ Strategic Planning Goal #3 focuses on increasing community and school district collaboration to create a safe, caring, and positive learning environment. As part of the development of this goal, committee members worked with BSN Sports and Varsity Branding to develop logos in an effort to provide Bennington Public Schools the opportunity to promote, recognize, and embrace the excellence and collaboration between our schools and the community.
The final result of the branding process was four different logos that can be applied to all schools throughout the district. The committee felt it was necessary for schools to have the
ability to adapt the logos as their own whether it be an elementary, middle, or high school. As we continue to grow with new schools emerging it is likely that not every student or family will be a “Badger.” However, the Bennington “B” will serve as a symbol of pride, collaboration, and reflect the partnership between all Bennington Public School employees, community members, and students. Additionally, the “B” will become synonymous with the success and excellence of Bennington Public Schools.
Strategic Planning Goal #3 is led by Mr. Chad Boyes - Anchor Pointe Principal, Mr. Greg Lamberty - Bennington High School Assistant Principal, and
branding update
Mr. Chris Kessell - Bennington High School Activities Director. Additional committee members include school board members, parent representatives from school PTOs and the BHS Booster Club, as well as student representatives from the Bennington High School FBLA and Student Senate.
Bennington Public Schools uses the School Messenger System to send instant notifications to families. This system is designed for schools to send messages to a large number of people quickly and effectively. With this system, the district can send out voice messages, email messages, and/or SMS (text) messages to students, parents, and staff. In time-sensitive situations, parents and guardians will receive information and details directly from the school. School Messenger can be beneficial in sending out important messages like school closings or routine ones, such as event and meeting reminders to all or selective groups. There is no sign up necessary for email; all family directory information will be set up by the district. If you wish to receive text messages please text Y to 67587 to opt-in to receive text messages from the District.
Parents/guardians need to confirm the contact information during the online student verification process and keep the office informed of changes throughout the school year. If you receive a call/message from School Messenger from a school phone number, please CHECK YOUR MESSAGES BEFORE CALLING SCHOOL. The benefit of this system is that we can quickly send you the information in a message rather than making personal contact with each family. Our goal for using this system is to keep you well-informed in a timely manner.
First Day Schedule for Bennington Public Schools
On Wednesday, August 18th, the Bennington Public School schedule will be 8:20 - 11:40 A.M. for all elementary schools. The Middle School schedule runs from 8:10 - 11:50 A.M. and the High School will be in session from 8:10 - 12:00 P.M. The district has implemented these staggered release times to help with traffic pattern flow around and between the schools. The first day schedule allows for special orientation activities for students and is intended to ease the transition from summer to regular school hours.
