Do you know of someone who would like to join NWWS? This is a terrific night to do so, as they will receive aspecial dues rate plus a copy of the NWWS book, “A Fluid Tradition”.
Look for the full-page ad within this newsletter to learn more about the many manufacturers who will be inthe store, ready to meet you, answer your questions, showing both new and beloved art materials. Some willhave samples for you! Meeting the vendors will make you eligible for some wonderful door prizes!
We thank Daniel Smith once again for their support of NWWS and for their gracious coordination withNWWS to make this special night a great success.
Greetings to you all. We’re about to hang“Waterworks Amplified”, our 2019Members Exhibition and will movedirectly into “Waterworks Unchained”,our 2020 Members Exhibition just 6months later. 2020 is our year oftransition, when the International Openwill move to October each year and theMembers Exhibition will become an AprilExhibition.
The name “Waterworks” was enhancedto call attention to the prospectusmodifications begun in 2018 with“Waterworks Unplugged”, the first yearNWWS modified the prospectus torecognize materials and framing trendsthat are becoming commonplace in thewider watermedia world. We are thrilledas our members embrace the changesand understand that more options allowfor greater creative freedom while stillhonoring this beautiful medium we love.As you view the 2019 MembersExhibition, note that these “changes”simply mean “choices”, and we are allrewarded with exhibitions that remainrooted in glorious watercolor whilewelcoming additional viewpoints.
The versatility of watercolor seems tonever end as we are intrigued by newtechniques and fit them—or not—intoour own process. Watercolor markers, pencils, crayons, fillable pens, grounds, metallics, mediums, substrates…one canhardly keep up! And Some Just Fade Away…
“As you may know, the Artists Network mediabrands (including Artists Magazine, WatercolorArtist, Pastel Journal, WetCanvas, Artists Network TV,and ArtistsNetwork.com), which were formerlyowned by F+W Media, were sold to Peak MediaProperties earlier this summer. F+W’s North LightBooks imprint and book publishing operation, however, were sold to Penguin Random House.”

Thanks, Bev. I didn’t know this but I have been distressedby the demise of many of the art publications. Drawing

and Watercolor Magazine have both disappeared inrecent years. Fortunately, I have old copies of both that Iuse as teaching resources.
I don’t know whether they all became unprofitable orperhaps the internet simply proved more efficient.
I have nearly fifteen years of back copies of WatercolorArtist, formerly Watercolor Magic. The editors have beenincredibly generous in granting me permission torepublish articles. They have even sent me camera-readyproofs. Most recently I published the excellent article onperspective (See May/June 2018 Hot Press). I use it when Iteach at the women’s prison and at Tacoma CommunityCollege.
Let’s hope that Peak MediaProperties continues topublish these excellentperiodicals.

Designed to help watercolor artists understand both colortheory and paint properties, we will explore the properties ofwatercolor pigments (transparent, opaque, staining, fugitive, granulating, on my!) and we will look at different ways ofmixing color (on the palette, on the paper, wet-into-wet,glazing). We will experiment with color temperature, value, and intensity of pigments. We will learn about the advantagesof painting with a limited palette and we will make a lot ofcolor charts in the process. We will play with formulas that workwell for specific subjects (skies, skin, shadows). We will explorehow to match colors and study classic compatible palettes(colors that work well together in a painting). We will look atthe emotions of colors and explore the use of color through arthistory. All skill levels welcome. Register athttps://charlenecollinsfreeman.com/workshops.

NWWS SeattlePlein Air 2019A good time was had by all. Somelearned some new techniques fordealing with everything from highwinds (clip a pack or water bottle toyour easel!), mist and rain (KubotaGarden has a new covered terrace!),hot sun (pick a view from a shadyspot and calculate which way thesun is going!) and curious passers-by (NWWS painters are now in someinternational vacation shots : -). Iwas told in the Arboretum that I hadpainted a “pont tres romantique” bya visiting French family.
We visited Gasworks Park, theFremont Ship Canal, Fishermen’sTerminal, Kubota Garden,Commodore Park (south side of theHiram Chittenden Locks), GoldenGardens and the Washington ParkArboretum. We had as few as sevenpainters (a misty day at Fishermen’sTerminal) and as many as 23 (asunny day at the Arboretum). Everyother Wednesday beginning June 5,we started around 9:30 am. Peoplewandered off to paint whatinterested them on the site; thenthose that wanted to, met aroundnoon to see what their colleagueshad created. Besides the individualpractice, this is perhaps the bestpart of the experience: a wholegallery of styles and levels ofaccomplishment demonstratingthere is no one way to make a goodpainting.
Officially, it’s over for the summer –but at our final August 28 meetingmany people wanted to continue. As long as theweather remainsdecent enough, starting 9/11I’ll continuesending outlocations toanyone is on orjoins thecurrently 27-person mailinglist.

MESSAGE FROM ERIC WIEGARDT ON WATERCOLOR
Design Shapes
Anyone who has taken a workshop of mine or watched one of my videos will note that I repeatedly mention the importance of good shape construc-tion. No painting will have a strong composition without this consideration.
In my workshops I emphasize the avoidance of awkward geometric shapes: rectangles, squares, circles, triangles - anything out of geome-try class - and focus on constructing the better shapes of puzzle pieces. Puzzle pieces have irregularities that our minds 昀nd appealing; whereas, geometry class shapes can convey a visual discomfort - the uniformity of parallel sides and a line of symmetry down the middle make us feel un-easy.
I also encourage the repetition of shapes, but to alternate the pattern to create interest. A good example of this would be pickets of a fence. Even though realistically they are even spaced, the same color, and the same width, it would be advisable to break up the repetition with alternation - group a few, change the value of some, change the distances between the pickets. For those who feel the burden of trying to paint their subject “as is”, this may be dif昀cult. However, remember a good painting is based on understanding design concepts over the natural world as we see it.
But why does the human mind need a breaking up of visual patterns so that they do not appear repetitive or geometric? Why do we need the softer image of a variety of puzzle-pieced shapes, rather than a very static, repetitive construction? What is it in our psyche that requires this?
I am not sure I can answer this, but it is evident in all the arts - our minds demand variety. n music, we need a variety of notes, a variety of timing, and a variety of the spaces between notes. Nobody wants to listen to a steady drumbeat for long.
In writing, look at the variety of sentence structure in your favorite novel - phrases, clauses, short sentences, long sentences. A good plot with a variety of sentence structure is very appealing. A dictionary and many text-books are not.
So really, when one thinks about it, design concepts are really built upon the knowledge of what we naturally 昀nd appealing, on a visceral level. We are hard- wired to appreciate variety, and a good artist will capitalize on this.
Keep your brush wet!
