PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

With the season half over, it would seem timely to review the past and look forward to the future .

The competition has progressed so far with a minimum of difficulties, and all Clubs would appear to be wellorganised and equipped to deal with the day to day problems which are always present in sports administration .

Of particular interest and gratification is the number of Clubs that have heeded the advice given at the Fo-rums held pre-season in regard to sponsorship and marketing . It is important that advantages gained from thesenew sources be used not only for the everyday running of the Club, but also to provide and up-grade facilitieswhich will be of lasting benefit to your club and your locality .

Our Representative Matches have not had the success for which we would have hoped . An easy win by theCDEF side in Canberra was offset by losses to South Australia and the V.C.F.L . by the Senior team. It couldwell be that the time has come for us to re-assess our position in this regard, and I am sure that the Executivewill be looking at it in the immediate future .

Despite the lack of success I have nothing but praise for the players who represented the Association . Theirefforts and dedication were deserving of better results, and their perseverance against the V.C .FL . who wereclearly stronger and more talented than our team, was praised by all who saw the game.

Special thanks must go to the Coaches, Bernie Sheehy & Andrew Langford-Jones, and their Selectorsand Team Managers, for the time, effort and expertise they contributed .

And so now we look forward to the finals . I wish all Clubs the best of luck - should it be in reaching theFour, or in avoiding relegation .

JIM HAWKINS .

by Peter Frc -_ch

Regular correspondent Ross Booth was absent last week . He was in Adelaide assisting Melbourne Grammarcoach Ken Emselle in their quest for victorv over St . Peters . He was successful too !

I notice last week that Ross wondered whether the four was settled . Well, thanks to a form reversal by Col-legians and a huge win by North O .B . you would have to say its far from settled as La's grip on fourth spotis decidedly shaky.

I observed the first half of the Collegians De La game and was impressed with the Lions enthusiasm aroundthe ball . Bruce Ferguson had Richard Schober at full forward and would have been delighted with the en-deavour and form of ruck rovers Andrew Ingleton & David Kerr. Centre half forward Stephen Bickford didn'thave a bad day either - 22 kicks, 13 marks, 11 handballs and 3 goals . It will be interesting to see whetherthe umpires felt he was best afield after that effort . We'll all find out at the vote count on August 26th!Veteran Lion watcher Glen Cook considered the performance to be their best for the season and althoughits extremely doubtful that they could make the finals funnier things have happened . De La can thank its lastline of defence of Peter Barry, Adrian O'Keefe & Matt Donohue or may have well experienced a dreadfulthrashing .

For the second half I drove over to Flinders Parks for the Old Xaverians & Old Paradians encounter whereI had no trouble parking in Swan St . due to that disastrous crowd of only 8000 at the MCG . The half time scoresof 2 .11 (O.X .) to 3 .7 (O.P.) indicated that both defences had been well on top and that plenty of pressure hadbeen applied .

Old Paradians looked pretty good in the third quarter, especially their defence where Matt Considine, DaleMcCann, Tony Canavan, Steve Exton & Tony Pritchard were working on close co-operation . Admittedly Xavsmade it easy for them the way they 'bombed' the ball out of their own defence . With Martin Heffernan boringinto the packs and Owen Abrahams & Frank Gleason dangerous up forward, O.P's twenty point lead at 3/4time suggested they would win their 6th game on end against the Xavs. Their position was strengthened whenPaul Fahey put them 26 points clear at around the 6 minute mark . How then did the Xavs get up? To quotethe staunchest of Old Xav supporters Brian Lugar, "Persistence, Persistence!" I agree but also feel that themove of Bill Denton to the forward line and the fact that Mark Summers took over in the ruck also contibuted .In addition its hard to keep Steven Curtain out of the action all day and he lifted admirably when it really count-ed . Xavs will be deliqhted to have that Old Paradian monkev off their back !

No rt h boosted its poor percentage and moved level with De La Salle following a huge win over Caulfieldwho put up little opposition . North's ability to win the ball out of the "glue put" and dominant centre line setup the win, and nine goals to Mark Vowman and 6 to the "playing President" Steve Hibbert highlighted agood day for the visitors . Caulfield Secretary Dean Fe!senthal was also impressed with North's hand & footskills, and after a sluggish start Coach Don Martin has the side playing with a lot of confidence and purpose .

Uni Blues 'jumped' Bulleen-Temp adding 7 goals to nil and then packed the backline in the second termto have the match sewn up by half time. The ground was a quagmire and so Brian Lowe 6 goals can be wellsatisfied with his display. I trust Ted McNamara was equally encouraged by the Blues effort . Those two oldstagers Mark Tyquin & Bernie Bngel were also in great touch and will have much to do with the Blues survival .

On the Sunday Scotch stayed with Ormond until 3/a time, assisted for a while by Ormond having only 16men on the ground . Four reports marred a hard game. However the form of youngsters Paul Nanke rv is & BradNash would have delighted Mike McArthur- Allen and his match committee as would the return to form ofPaul Sutherland who disposed some great aerial skills. Andrew Smith, Rob Fuller, John Reddish & WillAllen were great goers for the Cardinals .

Ross phoned through his selections and has gone for North to upset the mighty Ormond! Brave selectionRoss who will return to the ABC (3L0) this evening and 3AW tomorrow at 9 .30 a .m .A SECTION B SECTIONNORTH O.B. V Ormond St. Kilda CBOC v PARKSIDEOLD SCOTCH V Uni Blues Ivanhoe v ST. No rt h O.B. face a daunting prospect at home this afternoon . They have dragged themselves back from adisastrous start and are now equal 4th and to remain there must beat top side Ormond whom I notice RossBooth has gone against . Well after Watching Ormond stuggle for three-quarters to shake off a dogged Old Sco'iahand then turn on the power I feel they've got North covered at all turns . Paul McDonald's return will offset thedrive Gary Carroll is providing whilst the clash between Paul Cox (0) & Ben Curulli should see the Ormondrover take the honours . Paul Schuhkraft showed his versatility last Sunday when given a run on the ball andhis ability to kick goals on No rt h's Jerome Griffin will have a big bearing on the result . At the other end Or-mond's defence will need to guard Mark Bowman, Steve Hibbert & Paul Considine who have formed a threepronged avenue to goal . David McDonaid will possibly pick up Considine and skipper Russel Barnes willhave the task of guarding Hibbert . Scott Taylor will remind Bowman of the difference between Ormond & Caulfieldand I'm of the opinion that the three Pauls - Nankervis, Sutherland & Forsyth can combine to give the Wondersa winning centre line .

Uni Blues move closer home this week, to Flinders Park where they'll face a desperate Old Scotch whohave been all around a win . However l don't believe it will come today as Blues I'm reliably informed are o nthe way back following that pathetic effort against Caulfield Grammarians a few weeks back . The return ofBernie Angel & Phil Grutzner has provided stability and in Don Maclnnes & Brian Lowe they have two capa-ble goal scorers . Mike Yandell will give them first use of the ball although Geoff Allen & Simon Macauleywill have to battle hard for possessions against John Reddish & Brian Hodge. Scotch may start favouritesin many eyes but I think the Blues can win it .

Collegians at home again will be too accomplished for Bulleen-Templestowe and will be delighted withback to back wins . There's no doubt the Lions have the ability to make a late run at fourth spot and they'll belooking for a big win today to improve that ordinary percentage . The Bullants are no doubt resigned to B Sectionfor next seaon but will be anxious to salvage something from the season . However they're simply not in theLions league and must now look to the future .

Old Paradians are back at Bundoora where they will show visitors Caulfield no mercy. The loss to Old Xavslast week placed the Club only one win ahead of both De La & No rt h and for the first time this year there arequestions being asked about O.Ps finals hopes. The loss of Dale McCann due to business commitments isa real blow and Dominic Spillane may still be another couple of weeks. However John Atta should returntoday where he will lift a forward line which struggled last week . I wonder whether O.Ps are in a mid seasonslump? Today provides a great oppotunity to come out of it, and as for Caulfield its a long way to go for a thrashing !

The remaining game should be a ripper! De La & Old Xavs at East Malvern . De La put in its worst perfor-mance for two years last week whilst Xavs were rightly thrilled with their effort . For De La it really is a crucialgame, as a series of results could see them drop out of the four. They'll be stirred up I've no doubt, and shouldwelcome the return of Mick Deveson & Pat Maher who will relish a crack at the Old Xavs. Tim Cooke willhave benefitted from the game last week and De La will be hoping for an improvement from many players whowere down last week . Xavs on the other hand have earn't the respect from all in A Section and apart from aweakness at centre half forward which they'll be hoping Richard Armst rong may eventually fill, their goal togoal line and on ball players led by Mark Summers, Laurie Meehan and former Ormond reserve rover TimHack who has grabbed his chance to play senior football should see them to victory in what will certainly bea very tough and tight game.

The match of the day in B Section will be played at University where the Blacks meet Therry who are facinga fourth loss on end . Blacks will approach the game confident of victory folowing good wins in recent weekswhereas Therry have not only lost form but also second spot . It will no doubt have been crises time at OakPark this week with team meetings and varied training drills as Bernie Dunn endeavours to pull the side outof its slump. However provided players of the calibre of Biddlestone, Wri ggleswo rth, Reidy, Matt on & C rottycan refind their deft touch I think Therry can win and return to the winning list, although Blacks know they'lldraw level on points it

Parkside travel across town to take on the Saints who were considered unlucky by-some observers not tonave beaten Marcellin last week . That's been the Saints sad story all year and-even at home they just cant7eem to win the close game. I've little hesitation in selecting Parkside.

St . Bernards go to the Boulevard to meet Ivanhoe and are really the form side of the section at the moment .j„ey were superb last week out at Therry and will certainly not be taking Ivanhoe lightly . To have any hopeof playing finals Ivanhoe would need to win today but St . Bernards play on style and the form of Comito, J .Kiaaysen & McAllister will give victory to the visitors.

Banyule has an excellent chance to pull clear of relegation worries by beating Old Trinity who were mostdisappointing last week . Banyule has taken time to find its feet in B Section but has picked up the pace and,,;ill I believe do well enough to survive the year and build on it for the seasons ahead . Old Trinity who wonpromotion with Banyule are most unreliable . They beat Parkside earlier in the year in splended fashion but havebeen unable to find that form since and at Waringal Park Banyule will win .

Marcellin & Fawkner clash at Elsternwick Park . Fawkner has been hard hit by injuries and went for youthlast week in an all out endeavour to pick up a win . The move proved successful and with some good playersto return before the season ends Fawkner will be all out to survive the year. However today they'll meet anotheryoung side in Marcellin who have had some great wins in the last few weeks . From being in danger a monthago of slipping out of the four the Eagles now find themselves in second place . They will appreciate playingat Elsterwick Park which is in pretty good condition apart from the centre and which should also suit their run-ning game. They are without Matt Getson who is overseas and will rely heavily on the workmanlike Tony Paatschfor on ball drive. As both sides play attacking football and have a lot at stake, its bound to be an entertaininggame one which Marcellin will win due to its eveness and all round ability .

REVIEW OF MATCHES PLAYED 27 .6 .1987 - ROUND 11Heavy conditions again prevailed and they certainly contributed to many upsets.

D SECTIO NOld Ivanhoe had a big win against North Brunswick, by fifty three points while inaccuracy by Old Camber-

well meant they accounted for Elsternwick by only eight points . St kevins avenged their April 25 loss to Heather-

ton when they finished forty six points ahead. Bulleen United defeated Preston comfortably by thirty eight

points . Inaccuracy by both Old Mentonians & Coburg was a feature of their game. Nevertheless Old Mentoni-

ans emerged clear winners by twenty eight points .E SECTIO NBrunswick recorded a twenty seven point win against Old Geelong whereas West Brunswick crushed Clay-

ton by seventy one points . In the surprise of the round, Peninsula Old Boys defeated University High School

Old Boys by fourteen points . With this win Peninsula has injected interest in which side will be relegated . St .

Bedes just fell in when they finished three points in front of Powerhouse who must really be conscious of Penin-

sula's threat to their E Section position . Inaccuracy by State Bank prevented them winning against Old Essen-

don Grammarians in spite of having more of the play.F SECTIONWilliamstown improved their percentage as a result of their sixty two point victory over the University Reds.

St . Leonards were never in the game against Commonwealth Bank as they could score only one goal against

the Banker's twelve . St . Andrews built a five goal lead at three quarter time into a seventy two point victoryover Doveton. Old Carey failed by twenty eight points against Aquinas in a low scoring game at Bulleen . Whitefri-

ars made light of the conditions at LaTrobe University to record an eighty five point victory over the home side.

A .N .Z . Bank won their first match (on the field) when they recorded a fifty point victory over Footscray Insti-

tute . Well done A .N .Z .G SECTIONDe La Salle defeated Old Melburnians by forty eight points while Old Haileybu ry mocked my selection of

St. Bernards by defeating the Saints by eighty four points. Po rt Colts maintained their final's chances by defeating

Marcellin by forty four points while Bloods maintained their unbeaten record by defeating an inaccurate Kew

by twenty four points. In a surprise result eighth placed Collegians defeated second placed Monash Whites

by a goal . Monash inaccuracy did not help the team's cause. GTV9 won its first match of the season when

it defeated Old Scotch by twenty nine points . Well done GTV9 .H SECTIO NState Bank did record a big win over Powerhouse/Balaclava - by sixty eight points. St. Kevins defeated

Old Geelong by twenty nine points whereas St . Kilda could only manage victory over Therry by eleven points .

Twenty points was the margin by which Old Xaverians defeated Bulleen Templestowe while leaders Old Elthar:

defeated Richmond Central by thirty eight points. Old Brighton received a walk over from North Old Boys .

UNDER 19 SECTION iDespite shockingly inacurate kicking De La Salle managed to defeat Melbourne High School Old Boys by

sixty five points . Bulleen Templestowe never allowed University Blues into the game where the Combine

won by forty eight points . An unusual feature was that the Blues did not score a goal! Old Xaverians main-tained their winning streak by finishing forty four points to the good of Old Paradians Green . Collegians didreturn to the winning list by means of a sixty eight point victory over Ormond . No rth Old Boys forfeited to

Marcellin .UNDER 19 SECTION 2Old Melburnians forfeited to their historic rivals Old Scotch (just as well it didn't happen in 1858) .

Old Haileybury thrashed St . Bernards by seventy points and thus exchanged places on the ladder with them .

Thomastown vindicated my faith in them with a thirty four point victory over CBC St . Kilda . It is always difficult

for visitors to win on the Coughlin Oval so this victory was all the more meritorious. Therry overwhelmed OI°®

Brighton to win by one hundred and nine points. University Blacks defeated Banyule by sixty six points which

hardly did credit to my selection of the Blacks to win narrowly.

6 THE A M ATEUR FOOTBALLER 1987

UNDER 19 SECTION 3Whitefriars humiliated Williamstown by holding them to a solitary goal and then recording ninety four pointvictory. Ivanhoe defeated an inaccurate Monash Blues by fourteen points. The result could have been alteredif the students had kicked straighter. Old Paradians Purple faded in the last quarter against Caulfield Gram-marians to go down by twenty six points despite having held a nine point lead at halftime . Hampton Rovershad the bye.

PREVIEW OF ROUND 12 - JULY 4, 1987D SECTIONSt. Kevins defeated No rt h Brunswick in Round 3 and since then they have gone to sectional leadership, whereNo rt h Brunswick has slipped back to middle section . Today I select St. Kevins to win again . Traditional rivalsOld Ivanhoe & Old Camberwell will meet on Chelmswo rt h Park . This game should be the "match of theround" and the result could help decide the final four composition . At home I favour Old Ivanhoe to take thepoints. Preston at home to Heatherton should record a comfortable victory . Bulleen United journey to Coburgwhere the locals have not fared well this season . Bulleen United players will possess too much talent and theirside will take the points. Elsternwick journey to Old Mentonians where the bounce of the ball and the groundsize could mitigate against them . Old Mentonians should win this game .E SECTIO NPeninsula who play well at home await Brunswick whose performances indicate that they will return with thefour points . Old Geelong play Clayton on Como where the home side should emerge victorious as Clayton's1987 form has not been up to E Section standard . Powerhouse are at home to their traditional rivals UniversityHigh School Old Boys . (Do you recall the time they were promoted to A Section in the same season?) TheUniversity High performances in 1987 have been the superior and I select them to win again today. Two ofthe section leaders State Bank & St . Bedes meet on Oval 4 . After a close contest I expect that the Bankerswill have a credit score. At Keilor Old Essendon Grammarians play West Brunswick who are gathering momen-tum as the season progresses. Today however I expect West's to hit a hurdle as I expect Old Essendon totake the points .F SECTIONWilliamstown journey to the far east to play Aquinas who will fully test the Seasiders' talents. At home I tipAquinas to take the points. In the battle of the Banks at Albe rt Park, the Commonwealth visits A .N .Z . Whatcan one write about these teams? Neither has done much on the field to warrant notoriety or to inspire confi-dence by your tipster. My selection is Commonwealth Bank . Doveton should maintain their high standingon the ladder by accounting for St. Leonards who are not having a successful season. Whitefriars shouldencounter minimal difficulty in defeating University Reds who visit Donvale today. LaTrobe University & OldCarey meet at the University. Both sides will be used to the big ground and given their relative ladder positionsI expect a high standard game. I believe LaTrobe University is capable of taking the four points. FootscrayInstitute & St . Andrews meet on the turner Reserve St Andrews should win well to further entrench theirposition in the leading bracket .G SECTIO NBloods & De La Salle should provide a high standard game that could be a preview of the finals. Bloodsform is hard to fault so I select them to win again . The Old Scotch & St . Bernards game should be an evencontest when judged by 1987 form . However I lean to Old Scotch to take the points today. Po rt Colts shouldprove too talented for Old Haileybu ry and thus keep themselves well in the race for a final's berth . NeitherCollegians nor Old Melburnians have displayed consistent form during 1987 so predicting the result of to-day's game. Due to home ground advantage I favour Collegians. Potential finalists MOnash Whites & Kewmeet at the University. The students have marginally the better performances this season and on their own groundI favour Monash to win . Marcellin travel to Swinburne Oval to meet GTV9 whose form has little to recommendit . Evidence available all points to a Marcellin victory .H SECTIO NState Bank should display sufficient talent to defeat No rth Old Boys by a comfortable margin . Leaders ElthamCollege should be able to defeat Old Geelong by a wide margin when the sides meet at Research today.St . Kevins should encounter little difficulty in defeating Therry by a very big margin as Ther ry has not been'able to perform at the same level as St . Kevins so far this season . Bulleen Templestowe should build theiralready impressive percentage at the expense of Powerhouse/Balaclava whose performances have not beeninspirational . Old Xaverians play Old Brighton in Yarra Park . "The C rocodiles" have turned in some incon-sistent performances whereas Old Brighton's record has been more predictable. Today I anticipate the strongBrighton defence will hold the Old Xaverians to a losing score. Richmond Central appears to have the skillto defeat St. Kilda and thus remain in the race for the finals.UNDER 19 SECTION 1De La Salle should not encounter many difficulties in defeating No rt h Old Boys who appear to be inexorablyon the road to relegation . Melbourne High School Old Boys who are at home to University Blues will givea spirited display and should trouble the University side. However the depth of talent in the University Blue s

11 carry them to victory. Old Paradians Green meet Marcellin whom they defeated on April 25. In that game

the Paradians came from behind to take the game . Today at Bundoora I favour Old Paradians G reen to hold

Marcellin challenges and thus win the game. Ormond forfeited to Old Xaverians on April 25 so today will be

their first on field meeting . Old Xaverians have the best record in this section and I am confident Ormond will

not be sufficiently talented to tarnish it today. Bulleen Templestowe players should encounter difficulty adjust-

ing to the Albert Park conditions when they meet Collegians today . Given their respective places on the lad-der I select Bulleen Templestowe to overcome Collegians home ground advantage and win the game.

UNDER 19 SECTION 2Old Melburnians journey to Thomastown where they will find the ground size and the prevailing conditions

very strange. In addition the O.Ms will meet a tenacious Thomastown who are my selection to take the points.

In the main game of the round Old Scotch are at home to St . Bernards . Three factors have prompted me

to select Old Scotch : home ground advantage, more active forwards and greater consistency over the season .

Leaders Therry should encounter few difficulties in defeating CBC St .Kilda who make the long journey to Pas-

coe Vale. Banyule should remain in touch with the leading sides by accounting for tenth placed Old Brighton

while I expect Old Haileybu ry to defeat the University Blacks who have been the more inconsistent side this

season .UNDER 19 SECTION 3Caulfield Grammarians are at home to Williamstown and I expect the Grammarians to prove too talented

and thus take the points . Hampton Rovers have Whitefriars as their visitors today and indications from the

season's scores give evidence the Rover defenders will have a torrid hundred minutes as the Whitefriars' side

moves towards their expected victory. Ivanhoe are always a hard side to defeat at home and today I predict

another victory to the `Hoes when they account for the keen and maturing Old Paradians Purple players.

Monash Blues have the bye.

Personality ParsBALACLAVA MILESTONES

Congratulations to two Balaclava stalwarts whocelebrated personal milestones last week against OldMelburnians . Russell Stocker played his 50th gamefor the club, while John Sist notched up his 150thin the same game, and both proved themselves veryvaluable contributors in a win the local experts sug-gest was the most prestigous in the history of the club .

Russell has been around the place for a few yearsnow and is starting to realise his full potential by secur-ing a regular place in the senior side. His improve-ment is in no small way due to his attitude . Once outon the field this handsome, polite, clean cut profes-sional young man turns into the "raging bull" . He pos-sesses the build of a player whose way you wouldget out of if he was charging at you, and added tothis his great desire to win the ball, he makes an idealbackman . Russell takes his game seriously and iscontinually working on trying to improve facets of hisplay, which makes him a very valuable asset in a clubworking its way through the grades . Russell imbibesin the odd glass of the amber fluid, and he likes noth-ing better than to help celebrate another Balaclavawin with a few mates . Well done on your efforts in thepast Russell, and we look forward to some more dash-ing play out of the backline from you in the future .

John Sist embodies everything that the notion"clubman" encompasses . He is very involved in ev-ery aspect of club life. As a player John has regular-ly represented the club week in and week out as avery skilful senior player who is very dangerousaround goals from every angle . A past winner of theclub's goal kicking award on a couple of occasionsis testimony to his accuracy. John's four goals in onequarter last week against Old Melburnians is someindication of his value on the forward line . John hasshown himself to be a good ball handler who is a de-ceptionally good mark, and who has a good turn ofspeed when necessary and especially when the goalsare in range. John is playing more of his football nowas a wingman/half forward, and is proving himself to

be an ever dangerous avenue of attack . John hasbeen a major contributor in Balaclava's last two grandfinal wins. Over the last 4 years John has filled theposition of club treasurer with great competence, while concurrently acting as the club delegate to theAmateurs . His ability to work hard for the club at alltimes is demonstrated continuously at club functions, where he is usually one of the organisers, first to workbehind the bar, and there again for the cleaning up.Well done John over the years on all your efforts forthe club in so many areas, and we all hope you nevermake enough money at the races to distract you fromplaying football for Balaclava. Good luck to both Rus-sel & John at Elsternwick Park today from everyoneat Balaclava.

COACH PLAYs 200thAil at State Bank wish to congratulate Peter Wab-

bis on playing his 200th game today. Peter playedhis first game in 1974 and since then has represent-ed the Club with distinction in each of its three sides .Onfield, Peter's determination, courage and en-deavour has never been questioned and he hasearned the respect of both friend and foe . Off-field,Peter has been a willing worker for the Club . He hasserved as a committeeman for most of his 14 yearassociation and was vice-president in 1984. This year,Peter gave up the chance to further his senior careerand took control of the club's "H" section side . Un-der Peter's guidance the team is performing aboveexpectations . Weel done "Wabbit" . State Bank is trulyortunate to have someone with your dedication as amember.

Big V Club Launch a great succes s'OTF' thanks Jocka Nelson for his entertaining address during which he launched the VAFA Big V Club . Jockapicked up on the input of De La Salle players and officials with recent state teams, and reminded all those presentof the enjoyment and friendships made as a result of interstate football .

He was preceeded by President Jim Hawkins who informed guests that irrespective of the changes beingmade and experienced at all levels of football the VAFA would remain amateur and would continue to run itsown show through administrators elected via the member clubs, comments which drew unrestrained applause .

All in all a great concept and the Club and Annual Luncheon will undoubtedly grow in stature over the years .

offered courtesy Annset Airlines, for the club whose Press Correspondent best exposes his team's performancesin the local press . 'OTF' wonders whether any other clubs have entries they have not as yet submitted?

200 AT HEATHERTO N

All at Heatherton would like to congratulate PeterHopkins on reaching the milestone of 200 games to-day. A true LEDGEND in his own mind Hoppy is avaluable person to have around the club, havingserved on the committee for many years and is al-ways one of the first to offer help when needed . Hoppyhas experienced the highs of football having beena member of the 1977 reserve grade premierhip side .Hoppy enjoys playing on a Saturday so much thathe even volunteered to play for the opposition (OldCarey Reserves) last year, so they could field a sideand give both teams a game. To this day Hoppy isstill wondering if he got any votes in Old Careys Bestand Fairest for his display of pace and high markingthat day. Hoppy has retired a few times now and itwill be a sad day for Heatherton when this familyproducing man does go into permanent retirement. From all at Heatherton F.C. well done Hoppalinko.

Umpires Cornerwith Brian Goodman

"Through the eyes of a former Umpire "I would like to thank Phillip Rowell, (a former A Section Grand Final Umpire) on submitting the following articleon the launch of the "Big V" Club .

"The Big V Club"The occasion of the Ormond V Old Scotch game held at Elsternwick Park on Sunday 28th June last was

special in that it provided the "on-field" entertainment to the launch of the "Big V" Club .At the carnival held in Melbourne in 1985 the VAFA had arranged a reunion of former VAFA representative

players, umpires and officials which had proved to be not only popular but highly successful, The Associationthus created the "Big V" club, membership of which is open to any player, umpire or official who has beeninvolved in interstate or carnival football for the V.A .F.A .

The inaugural luncheon was held at Elsternwick Park during the Ormond v Old Scotch reserves game andwas attended by approximately 100 members of the Club . Whilst nostalgia was high in the priorities of discus-sion it was reassuring to hear from VAFA President Jim Hawkins that the VAFA is the only football associationthat is presently growing in size and further that the VAFA remains totally committed to the concept of amateurfootball . One of the legends of amateur football "Jocka" Nelson then addressed the gathering and expressedthe sentiments of all present when he congratulated the association for organising and promoting the luncheonand the club.

It was satisfying to see the support for the function provided by the umpires and in particular it was greatto see some of the best umpires the VAFA has ever had present at the luncheon . Former "A" grade grand finalumpires Bill Mason, Brian Goodman and Colin Wills were present as were former "greats" Har ry Marks& Da ryl "Whiskas" Hill . It was also great to have current running umpires Bill Ahim & Wayne Lyons (formerOld Paradians player) in attendance. In addition David "Salad" Dressing who has played, umpired and coachedin amateur football, and who is still coaching Ormond Juniors' was very welcome on the umpires table.

Some people may write these men off as having played their part in amateur football but if the majority of(oday's umpires had the same commitment to amateur football and to their fellow umpires as these men had,n their day then amateur football would be the better for it .

***On April 16th, 1973 an article was written in the Amateur Footballer on one of our present running members .

The Umpires Association was having a Dinner Dance and Nancy & George McTaggart were in attendance.Their "baby son Peter" won the hearts of everyone and seemed to enjoy the attention he received . It was

rumoured at the time the umpires advisor had signed "young Macca" as an umpire for season 1989. Peteris a boundary umpire in 1987 and coming along very well, even if he is two years ahead of schedule.

VAFA representative teams have enjoyedthe comfo rt of wool for the last three seasons .

Players like Hampton Rover's DavidRogerson seen here in the new Woolblendmarkjumper for season 1987, and Ormond's Phillip

Kingston wearing the Woolblendmark jumperworn in the 1986 State Games, enjoy th efeeling of wool everyweek because the VAFAis one of a growing number of association swho have made the change toWoolblendmark jumpers .

They've made that changebecause they know that woolprovides maximum comfortwhether players are performingin hot or cold conditions .

42

And no matter how many times they'remachine washed or commercially laundered,Woolblendmark jumpers stay in shape, seasonafter season .

That's why Woolblendmark has VAFAendorsement, because nothing touches woolfor economic performance that just goes onand on .

°°BEACHBALL'S FIFTY AT F.I .T."Well known Melbourne entrepreneur and Footscray

Tech President, Bar ry Sullivan recently played hi s

fiftieth game for the club . When FI .T. was having itsproblems early this year the "Beachball" took overthe helm and as club supremo has been a key figurein steering the Tech back onto a successful track asa Club . "Sully" is one of the few Techers who hasplayed more games than he has had kicks, but a high-light of his career stands as that "90 metre" goal hekicked at Uni Reds two years back! The big ques-tion at Footscray is, who will retire first, "Beachball"Sullivan or our man from Benson's Tavern, Paul"Moby" Nelson . It should be interesting, but in themeantime, well done Bazza from everyone at the Tech, and we're all looking forward to your next kick!

PersonaDAVE GREGORY - 150 AT BALACLAVA

If Balaclava F.C. were to ever pick a best ever side,Dave Gregory would have to be the first player'sname on paper. Dave has won four club best andfairest awards over the years and finished second ontwo other occasions. He has been one very impor-tant reason why the senior team has improved its po-sition on the ladder every year since 1981, pickingup two premiership flags along the way. Dave is cur-rently serving as Club Captain for his fou rt h year, andis once again provin g to be an inspirational leader. He is a regular in the CDEF State side, and his leader-ship abilities have been recognised in this capacit yby being named vice-captain of this State side for th elast couple of years. Dave is the complete footballerwho is endowed with uncanny judgement, whethe rthe ball is in the air or on the ground . A very coura-geous player he can be regularly counted on to pic kup 30-40 possessions a game, and every posses-sion of his almost certainly means a possession toa team-mate further down the ground or a score o n,the board . Dave has been a very vital player in th e

Dave is the calibre of utility player every clubwould love to have, and an excellent clubman off thefield . It is not unusual to see him supporting his clubin H section before heading off to play in the seniors .He is a certainty for all club functions, and his easygoing nature makes him the perfect model for oneof Caroline's latest hair creations .
