The Adolescence
Andrés Buschiazzo
The term adolescence is relatively new. Surge in the twentieth century under the name of
vestibular as transition adolescence towards adulthood. Etymologically derived from the Latin,
"adolescere" = to grow or develop. Psychologically is defined as a fundamental stage of the
maturation of lifestyle which is deployed unreleased adaptations, those that, in a given society
distinguished children's behavior of adult behavior. The definition presents the "Compendium of
Psychiatry" is operative, "as that phase of life that begins with puberty and ends when the
independence of the person from their parents has reached a reasonable psychological
congruence. Once a high school is found, the vast majority of adolescents have already
undergone biological changes of puberty. At the end of secondary education, most middle-class
adolescents continue depending on their parents. The process is not necessarily the same in
other social, ethnic and cultural"(Kaplan & Sadock, 721). It is the period, according to whom,
ranging from 10 to 19 years and the period of youth up to 24 years, with individual and cultural
variations. It usually begins earlier in girls than in boys and shortened in the most primitive
societies.
The lifestyle of dependence progresses, characteristic feature of childhood in which the child
must trust each other, the adult, here the other trust him, this process is mediated by the
development of a "growing independence" (Allport), adolescence. The decision responsible for
the search for self-identity of the teenager may be improved by the consolidation of early bonds of
trust and respect. Meeting the child's primary needs for affection and encouragement provided
that, at a later stage, to acquire harmoniously language of tenderness, reciprocity and social
feeling.
Adler says that there is an extensive literature on the problem of adolescence and the vast
majority addresses the issue as if it were a crisis, where personality is liable to suffer a complete
change. The dangers exist but at the same time represent an opportunity to experience situations
and new evidence in solving fundamental human tasks (friendship, work and sexuality).
"For most children, adolescence means one thing above all others: must show that it is no longer
a child. If we could persuade you may be perfectly sure that you will not find drawbacks to this,
but it will come to pass as a matter of course, we would have succeeded in suppressing, a large
10
extent the tension that the situation creates, but if he believes he must prove it will naturally, an
exaggerated importance to this point"(Adler, 439).
Rank states that personality development represents expansion, differentiation and integration,
both internally and externally. He argues that the individual must pass through evolutionary
stages to develop and strengthen their will. The "will" is the core notion of the theoretical
framework. According to the petition of Mira y Lopez, his work was becoming increasingly
Adlerian resonances. Rank says:
“The will is a positive organization and integration guide of yourself creatively used in instinctual
drives at the same time it inhibits and controls them. (...) The sexuality ceases to be the strongest
factor in the evolutionary process. It has found its counterpart in the 'will', which could control
sexuality, at least to some extent. Therefore, the weight shifts to the first childhood to
adolescence, and it is mostly this period when checking for more decisive process of personality
development: the transition from dependence to independence”(Muuss, 43-44).
According to the zoologist Bainbridge, during the first ten years of life the brain generates a boom
in neural connections, however in the second decade of life the brain is greatly reduced because
it eliminated a number of connections, a phenomenon called "neuronal pruning". This
restructuring makes the brain work better in solving the problems of life. The neurotransmitter
dopamine, hormone found in four or five parts of the brain, one of which is a fairly deep center
doomed to control the activity of the cerebral cortex of the brain leading outer layer of higher
functions. Research indicates that it is in adolescence that this fundamental center activates
various functions connected allowing the adolescent's own address complex hypothetical-
deductive thinking according to Piaget's genetic epistemology that enables the analysis of
situations regardless of the concrete , build self-awareness. In other words, we arrive at the stage
of formal operations. Language skills are also complex compared with the child. A different brain
area that so far was not in operation is activated in a manner that facilitates the imagination,
creativity and change. The critical role of adolescent posture from tradition is a feature of the
need of the young to differentiate and find its own identity, a sine qua non for adulthood.
Melatonin is the hormone that is released at night and is associated to adolescence by the
difficulty that generates up early. In fact there are an educational program (England, Netherlands
and USA) that recommends taking their children to school two hours later by this difficulty
reporting studies and academic achievement outcomes are encouraging. The need to take risks
11
to grow and organize the brain, to be flexible and plastic to adapt constructively to the difficulties
of life, this is the central challenge of adolescence.
In some cultures this transition to adulthood does not exist, therefore the concept regard to each
context. In one of the seminars Adlerian Studies Centre, Dr Walton told us that in the countryside
of Ireland his grandfather had just turned 15 years and without consulting anyone sailed to
America to live and work there. He was a teenager and at that age, it was considered an adult
prepared for life as an independent person.
The hyper paradigmatic phenomenon is pointed out by the philosopher Obiols as
"adolescentization of society": the limits expand, extending childhood; adolescence is extended to
settle forever in adulthood. The consequences are consumption, individualism and insecurity.
Some causes are lack of cooperation and responsibility to the community and the poor
development of empathy or emotional intelligence (Goleman). The values that prevail are those of
the body worship, the mind an aesthetic and young. While for adults modernity was presented as
a reference for adolescents, the current situation is the reverse.
There are many people who at the age of forty still live at home with their parents and their main
income source is their retirement. A challenge for the entire Uruguayan society is to get out of this
economic dependence, social and affective task is no other than to be increasingly free and
responsible society.
The UNESCO definition of adult refers to an individual who has stopped growing (physically) who
assumes responsibility and shows a path in old age. Uruguay is the country with the highest rate
of aging in the Americas, with a percentage of 17.3% of the population over 60 years. The
demographic characteristics we live are: low fertility high emigration mostly of young people in full
reproductive age while life expectancy increased significantly. This aging society explains in large
part, the rejection and misunderstanding of adolescents to older adults and vice versa. The
intergenerational gap is so great that young people cannot or want to understand older adult or
vice versa. Therefore it is of great importance to build an intergenerational dialogues that can
recover the voice of the young and old.
The fear of growing old_ and in the words of RK is "one of the deepest problems of the self"
(1996, 31) and has been treated notably in the work of O. Wilde: "The Picture of Dorian Gray".
The artist Basil is dazzled by the beauty of a young man named Dorian Gray devotes to a portrait
and beauty credits her responsibility for his new art form. The young Dorian meets Basil's friend,
12
who has a hedonistic world view, realizing that one day his beauty will disappear; Dorian has the
desire to stay young forever. The desire is fulfilled and conserves young while the portrait aged
for him. The constant search of Dorian pleasure leads to a series of selfish and cruel acts.
However, the portrait serves as a reminder of the effects of each of the acts committed by the
young, appears to be degrading and aging. Rank defines the plot as a “neurotic spectrum -
phobia”, told with great artistic effect problem of permanence in time, which addresses issues
such as the myth of Narcissus.
Following one of the authors who make up our epistemological basis, Dilthey who formulated a
holistic model where the individual is part of everything. He was a critic of positivism to separate
the object from the subject, as it warned that both are united in the experience. The definition that
gave the term understanding and the ability to revive one that is of another. Then proposes the
idea of understanding as the ability to read or interpret, from the subjective point of view that tells
a story. The person that can sense his story is one that understands and at the same time is one
that produces it.
The bet must be participation, inclusion and social responsibility. If a boy is held is necessary to
go to an office and repair the damage done. The Adlerians educate for responsibility, to live in a
democratic society whose basis is respect. And so we say that the whole society is responsible of
their children.

filoma (= beso) y fobia (= miedo).
otra. En la obra de referencia el psicoanálisis estaba lleno de prohibiciones cuasi religiosas;
no besan”.
amor desinteresado y no erótico.
imposibles: “educar, gobernar y curar”.

Filomophobia at the psychologist and the teacher
Yaír Hazán
The term filomophobia is a neologism. It was invented by ad hoc respecting the Greek roots
where filoma (= kiss) and phobia (= fear). Without being and even less, without trying to create a
new diagnostic category, of which remain and is useless, say that it is a fear of giving or receiving
kisses or affection. The term is new, but the concept is not. Desmond Morris (1) complaint to the
American society by being intoxicated by psychoanalysis on one side and by behaviourism on the
other. In the psychoanalysis work of reference that was full of quasi-religious prohibitions; "be
careful about Oedipus, watch incest". Behaviorism through its denied founder up to today, John
Watson, advised parents not to take their children in their arms, to leave them playing in the
garden and watching them through a periscope, so that children would not realize they were
given attention. The result is "American children do not kiss". The referred author tells the story in
a very sad fact that a woman goes to look for a partner to have sex for a while and what you
really want is a hug, but in a society "filomophobic" can only get a hug through a relationship
sexual.
In our country and by an Argentinian custom originated in the football atmosphere people of
either sex are greeted with a kiss on the cheek. Here are those who put the face but do not give
the kiss, and also the case where they meet the cheeks and give the kiss in the air. They say "he
kissed me on the neck." The etiology and purpose are different, hides a fear of the affective by a
poor relationship with the mother figure, the first bridge of a hetero image (2) Titze. The result,
continue creating is the "pathophobia" which in this sense, pathos (= affective). We are
witnessing an irrational fear to express or receive affection, possibly for fear of losing it or it was a
reactive formation by single children and spoiled (3) Adler, who did not learn to share and just
want to get without giving.
The phenomenon is always linked to culture, to nobility (4) Georghiu, "is taught to never show
their feelings." This particular case is very cultural because it can not show positive feelings or
unitive and yes to display anger, hatred, disjunctive feelings. It is an issue that the etiology really
likes that is always seeking to discover a fake smile. It is a form of communication that is learned
in the early years, where it forms the style of life (5) Adler. Now we know from the theory of
communication that the most important flow passes through the non-verbal. People have been
taught to put "poker face" and others that are too expressive and are exposed. Between them is
19
the phenomenon of hypocrisy which is a sin more objected in the Gospels. "Whitewashed tombs"
Jesus calls.
In that communication flow is present the construct of empathy (consciously put in the place of
another, unlike of the empathy is natural, spontaneous and unmanageable). "Man can control
behavior, but not feelings" the pedagogues Neil teach us.
Buddhism before reaching Zen according to Buddha´s word (7) gives as the standard of living "to
be sad you're sad, you will be glad you are happy with." If this is not fulfilled misunderstandings
will appear or the discontinued affectivity. Such is the case of the subject to look good does a joke
to someone who is going through an anguishing time, the result is rejection.
The fear of rejection is what prevents the art support and development of community feeling. I
remember Sister Mary, an old Capuchin nun told me that once in his congregation used to pray,
"Deliver me, O Lord, the fear of being rejected."
This leads us to see how in epistolary dialogues that led to last book written by Adler (8) in
collaboration with the Lutheran pastor Jahn, there will come to an "agreement" in the climax of
perfection and the sense of community (Gemeinschaftsgefühl), is the idea of God.
Federico de Onis when it counts the visit to the house of the master of first letters or the
equivalent of seeing Adler, Freud and Erickson, "in his poor human intimacy," concludes that
"worthy only of being called master (worth equal to the therapist artistic pedagogical model and
like us) who at least once in life, has been able to give us a lesson in love”
Teachers and psychologists
They always move together in the affective, but not have too much permission, except Perls
Gestalt, to manifest.
Maurice Debesse (9) instructed teachers saying "the educator is not pope, must learn to smile,
otherwise have the wrong function."
There are psychologists and teachers living with gelotophobia, (10) Hazán and Titze, afraid to
laugh or laugh at them. But other irresponsible or lacking in social feeling, which sometimes are
told: "Be ashamed". This is already a very entrenched problem that can be overcome with
counseling but requires an analysis or more extensive therapy in time.
20
There is a clear situation, Gardner (13) has been highlighted for both roles, there must be based
on the personality of a 'inter personal intelligence, "one of the best detectors of its lack is the
difficulty that some teachers experience to learn is closely linked to Goleman's emotional
intelligence (14). It is very interesting to see how Individual Psychology, live without being quoted
by the new psychology and neuroscience.
Among the most important is to recall that this demonstration of affection is the Greek philia,
selfless love and erotic. Wilde (12) puts it gorgeously from prison: "Many reached the sky for less
important things. The saints when they stooped to kiss on the cheek to sinners were imbued with
the same spirit, the same love. "I am sure that between the San Francisco kissed a leper and
psychotherapist who break the taboo of hugging AIDS patient is almost no difference.
We know the situation in which caused dissatisfaction and anger at the British people the death of
Lady D. In those days, people shouted to the monarchy: "Say you feel it".
Today the task of a teacher is one of the most difficult. Freud said that there were three
impossible professions "educate, govern and heal". Against this understandable pessimism
(remember that Freud was due to submit to 33 cancer surgeries) stands Adler's work pointing to
education, to the logic of human society and the care of souls, as it says in the book written with
Jahn.
For the future: God deliver us that the construct of "filomophobia" will fall at the DSM V or some
other psychopathology.

El dar opciones en psicoterapia
Bernardo Salinas
mejorar tus calificaciones. Puede estar atento a tu higiene y a tu ropa y mejorar tu apariencia.”
(Schafer).
miedo o amenazan hacerle perder prestigio.
Me dice, - tenes
no existe.

Giving options in psychotherapy
Bernardo Salinas
Perhaps one of the most common situations for a psychotherapeutic process is that the patient
with the challenges of life thinks he has no options. Over the years he has devoted time and effort
to create the circumstances that allow him to exclaim "no other way", and shunning his
responsibilities while preserving his importance, which is probably excessive. A curious fact in
popular magical beliefs is that the medicine-man opens the roads with their rituals, which no are
merely theater plays seeking for compensation (useless) for the feeling of inferiority. At the
opposite of this, psychotherapy will drive us to discovering the responsibility for our actions and
decisions. "From the happy expression of Dreikurs that Adler freed the man of causality and
taxed him with the responsibility, it is not usual for us the passive role or the victim role to face
neurosis or symptom . If we have it is because we somehow agree. Otherwise, it fits our lifestyle.
Of course it is a wrong choice and mainly from the point of view of society "(Hazan / Titze). So the
options are reduced to a bare minimum ("perfection or nothing") in neurosis or completely
eliminated in psychosis (such as the "Wise King" of Gibran Khalil Gibran). From an early age, see
that there are options, and I can decide which one to take, approaches the child to the useful side
of life, lets take him responsibility and then he becomes freer. "Adler’s theory of Individual
Psychology stresses that all humans are capable of change and we can always do differently. It
is freeing and liberating to know you are capable of deciding how you will act. It’s empowering to
a child that they can do differently. You can study harder and improve your grades. You can be
attentive to your hygiene and clothing and improve your appearance."(Schafer). It is inherent to
every lifestyle away from the sense of community that shuns life tasks (whether a child seeking
by wrong means his place in the family or an adult who is prey of the arrangements what with
both eagerness has created), this perception that options have been exhausted “Will you indeed
sweep away the righteous with the wicked?”. (Genesis 18: 16-33). Asks Abraham to the Lord,
there is in this dialogue an ordering of the world in opposing pairs (right / wicked, destruction / no
destruction), "primitive world orientation corresponding to the assertions antithetical Aristotle and
the Pythagorean table of opposites, originates in the feeling of insecurity and represents a simple
artifice of logic. (...) The antithetical attitude can be illustrated very clearly between neurotic.
People think, often, that man and woman, hot and cold, light and heavy, strong and weak, are
contradictions. From the scientific point of view are not contradictions, but varieties, are degrees
29
of a scale arranged according to their approach to some ideal fiction. "(Ansbacher and
Ansbacher). This biblical story that asks for less righteous to not destroy Sodom is an
arrangement where the speech apparently advocate of Abraham and apparently comprehensive
of the Lord don´t generates more options, moving in the same vicious circle, where the "if"
expresses neurotic fiction, " And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will
spare the whole place for their sake.” " (Genesis 18: 16-33), or " if someone is as I will, I will
accept him. ". The number required just to save the city descends to ten and the Lord retire. "
Then he said, “Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are
found there.” He answered, “For the sake of ten I will not destroy it.” And the Lord went his way,
when he had finished speaking to Abraham, and Abraham returned to his place.. " (Genesis 18:
16-33). Like a good poker player, the Lord knew when to fold because there was a risk that
Abraham raised "well and .. if you forgive them all? (for being different) ", in which case the
arrangement would be in evidence showing the background of resentment and helplessness.
"The goal of the arrangement is to hide to the environment and to the subject itself the defeat
of unattainable ambitions. (...) This is to avoid test yourself in situations that frighten or threaten to
lose prestige. If (if) is the leitmotif of the neurotic drama. "If" is the last resort in every dilemma
neurotic "(Hazan / Titze). There is in this story from the Old Testament much more human than
divine, obviously a god capable of amazing wonders would not it be able to educate his people?,
Seems to resonate here the neurotic axiom "everything has to be my way and differently" or else I
will avenge (wrong goal postulated by Dreikurs), yes, it is," They do not want me, but at least I
can do things to get back when I'm hurt "(Walton).
Behind every arrangement, each goal wrong, there is a deep disappointment and resulted in the
perception that there are no options, avoiding any responsibility and therefore restricting creative
freedom. This difficulty in approaching the useful side of life implies a rising sense of inferiority
and decreased social interest, both human dimensions should be improved by educating the
mother or father to the child in a way that closely matches your neighbor collaborating with joy
and enthusiasm. If not, the work will fall on the psychotherapist who faces several challenges in
helping his patient.
Give options for a psychotherapeutic process implies the need not to go against the symptom as
you run the risk that the patient take these new possibilities as an imposition and then decide to
boycott the process. Adler therapist poses for similar work to that of the mother, I think this
implies a gradual working, dedicated and based on that to encourage is give options and give
options is encouraging. When we encourage a patient from a realistic point of view considering
30
the use it can make of their resources towards continuous improvement and no to perfection, we
offer something original: the possibility of variations (actions, encouragement is always a verb )
between two fictitious points that marked his lifestyle: one at less, in its past and another on more,
which wants to be located in an uncertain future. When we give options accordance with the
development of new skills and respecting patient self-determination we generate a context of
encouragement where there is no judgment or praise, where no rewards or punishments and
natural consequence of every action is a greater freedom coupled with greater accountability .
Even if the patient chooses not to follow this line of work is now aware of their patterns of
behavior and that there are alternatives for them.
Then share a vignette of a case that I think exemplifies the stated above.
This is a woman over thirty years (M) has started a university degree and who for various reasons
are forced to live with her mother. During a session inability restates for her mother to put limits
when she was a girl and give her tools to orient in life. As we worked this material she remembers
an episode when she was 10 years old. She was at the beach with her mother, was a beautiful
day, and felt like to exploring around her but at same time she was afraid of getting lost, she
asks to her mother if she can get away and the mother replied "do what you want" The patient
scolds her mother because she is not able to place limits and she was dumb, unable to answer
her. M feels lost and abandoned, did few steps away and begins to mourn, a woman who walks
by stops and tries to comfort her. Very excited finished telling this and adds, "I want a family, so I
still have X, is a kind of family." X is your current boyfriend who is united despite he mistreat and
live fighting all time. I ask if she want to work this memory to which she agrees, then ask him to
relate the memory as she would have liked it to be, "My mother thinks and slowly put limits. She
said, - you're right, I'll try to fix it, not just for you but for you and your sisters who need the
strength of a father and a mother. - The little girl is going to run on the beach "
Given the creativity of which we have spoken Adler and inspired by the work of Patrick Estrade, I
suggest if she want to createve a memory together, she says yes intrigued The'm led through a
brief relaxation technique and ask her to visualize that beach with all the details, light, heat, sea
sounds, the texture of the sand and I begin to narrate the memory with the changes she had told
me , with advancing technique she adds more details. At the end she said that that was not a
true memory, we had done it now, I told her that this memory that she created is now part of its
history, its past and now you can choose between two memories. Here she tells me she
remembered a dream he had with a beach. "I always dream of a beach that does not exist. I was
31
on this beach, going on a bike that handled X, we soaked the water, if the bike had grabbed a lot
of speed could go on the water, but we sank, The bike and we floated , people came to our
rescue in boats, my sister grabbed mine legs and I kicked her. I felt guilty about this. ". "Because
we were already on the hour I say that we can analyze this dream the next session. Animated
tells me that will make me remember this in case I forget. At the next session started working the
dream of all the material collected here bring some elements. The walk on water was related to
the mother, a very superstitious person and with a magical thinking who has greatly affected the
patient (the mother to stay with a change that was not hers , told to M "the universe gave me this
money"). The brand of the bike was "Winner", for a long time was she caught in a logic of Winner
/ Loser where overexert and end boycotting her. I want to include that M has advanced
knowledge of English, a language that was forced to study from early age with an aunt (to get a
good job someday) who mistreat her since she collaborated with her home´s economy
reproaching it in front to other people all the time.. The bike was conducted by X her boyfriend,
she searched for a long time to succeed in life by means male, his image as a woman was
devalued to start therapy always emphasizing the masculine as superior. The sister who grabs
her legs, is the smallest with which she has competed since forever ("she does nothing and the
others recognizeto her all"), showing her virile´s protest. The dream patient poses to the futility of
all media has been using so far to thrive, wrong means that you only have brought anguish and
sometimes problems of all kinds. Help comes from other people approaching (the change toward
greater social interest) to cooperate with appropriate means (a boat is the indicated vehicle for
water not a motorcycle) linked to a greater opening of M in other social circles (University, a new
job) where she discovers resources that he thought not having. While working all this mentioned
that she had another dream in the course of the week, he dreamed that she had to shave her
face, looked in the bathroom mirror and saw the bearded face and said that I had to shave. When
asked about the elements of the dream the patient recognizes that the bathroom was a mixture
between the bathroom of her boyfriend and her, the mirror which was watched is from her parents
home while the rest of the bathroom was of the house of her boyfriend. . This dream shows
clearly elements that mark the beginning of a change, shaving is to leave behind the ways male
with a new option. That self-image formed in his past (parents home mirror) held by male figures
present (boyfriend´s bathroom) is becoming an option, with the possibility of choosing ("I have to
shave"), to be bearded or shaved . Obviously this marks another stage in the process. There is
still a way to go together but I think that when we even outline that in life there are choices
(freedom + responsibility) began to gradually recover hope.
32
It should be added that before leaving the patient told me, "It's strange, but when I want to
remember that day at the beach the memory that comes to me is that which I made", I said that
she now had more options.

Heinz L. Ansbacher: el padre de la Moderna Psicología Individual
Magnos homines virtute metimur In memoriam Heinz L. Ansbacher
Ugo Sodini
1. Prefacio

Heinz L. Ansbacher: the father of the modern Individual Psychology
Magnos homines virtute metimur In memoriam Heinz L. Ansbacher
Ugo Sodini
1. Foreword
When I was asked to write an article on Individual Psychology I could not help but notice how this
happened exactly seven years from the death of Heinz L. Ansbacher1, the person whom, I
believe, we all can consider the father of the modern Individual Psychology. Thus it was easy to
take this opportunity to homage the memory of a scholar that was so influential both for the
training of adlerian psychologists and for the progress of psychology. The author of this article,
although living and working so far from the United States had the opportunity and the privilege to
meet Ansbacher and to correspond with him during the years, opportunity which was fundamental
both for his training and for the introduction in Italy of the thought of Alfred Adler. Today he still
remembers very vividly of when many years ago he met the professor and how this meeting was.
At least apparently, completely random although from it relevant consequences would follow,
both for the author and the Italian Adlerian Psychology. “many years later, exactly on July 30,
1990. I remember I was sitting on a bench in the park, in front of the Congress Palace in Abano
Terme (Italy) and I was waiting for the beginning of the 18th International Congress of Individual
Psychology to start when I saw an old vigorous and distinguished gentleman marching toward
me. When he was in front of me it was clear who he was: Professor Heinz L. Ansbacher, in my
mind the living purple book. He said “Hello” and it was very easy to get in touch with him.
Together we walked towards the Congress Palace, where he was to hold his special lecture titled:
“Further Considerations on the Adler-Freud Relationship” and he also asked me about my
attendance at the Congress. That day I was there just to listen to his lecture and I met the author
too” (18, p. 3).

2. The apparent simplicity of the Alfred Adler thought
When we read about the theory of Alfred Adler as described and interpreted by the various
Authors, not only of psychoanalytic school, we see how this is considered mainly a simple theory
although this interpretation is fundamentally the result of a stereotype difficult to correct and far
from reality, which mistakes simplicity for Adler’s disposition to promote people’s wellness: “Since
he urgently wanted to stay close to real life and create a psychology which could be grasped,
understood, and used by all, he also shunned technical jargon and avoided new technical terms.
Thus he was accused by many professional of popularization and oversimplification” (7, p. 4).
Such a judgment, then, cannot be shared because the only truly simple thing of Adler’s Individual
Psychology was the language through which he would express it, because, as Bottome
underlines, for Adler: “The science of the mind can only have for its proper goal the
understanding of human nature by every human being; and by its use, brings peace to every
human soul” (15, p. 255), and as Furtmüller further specifies: “Adler’s bedside manner was
unique. It was in the greatest possible contrast to any professional pompousness. He
administered science to his patients as if it were as simple as scrambling eggs” (17, p. 334).
These modalities, as Furtmuller remembers, were a direct expression of his personality and were
in every activity of the founder of the Individual Psychology because
“Adler was always the ‘common man’, nearly sloppy in his appearance, careless of cigarette
ashes dropping on his sleeve or waistcoat, oblivious of outer prestige of all kinds, artless in his
way of speaking although knowing very well how to drive his points home […] The trouble was,
Adler a ‘common man,’ careless of prestige, simple in manner and speech, not by inferiority but
by choice” […] Always, from the time when he was a general practitioner, Adler stuck to the
principle of showing patients and families the doctor not as a priest performing mysterious,
esoteric rites but as a man who tried to make his knowledge and his therapy understandable to
laymen just as far as possible” (17, p. 346-7).
This characteristic would intensify as time passed by and brought Adler: “to renounce the prestige
of the erudite if the intelligent but unsophisticated listener or reader had to pay the price of not
possibly following him; to avoid complicated details and ingenious classification where they were
a hindrance rather than a help for understanding basic ideas” (17, p. 386). From here, probably,
was born the misunderstanding that urged the careless observer to consider the individual
43
psychology simple because its founder talked in a simple way. As a matter of fact: “There were
people who regarded themselves as Adler’s disciples and thought that Individual Psychology was
‘easy’. Because it was easy to remember the sentences into which Adler compressed the
essence of his ideas, they overlooked the fact that behind them was the concentrated experience
of decades” (17, p. 387). That misunderstanding, as of today, is not yet completely corrected
although Adler himself, many times, replied clearly to the criticism about his simple way of
expressing his ideas: “Hence he had to defend himself against the criticism that his teachings
were too simple or even trivial. Proudly he answered that it had cost him years of hard work to
learn to express in a simple way, without the barrage of professional patter, the results of a
lifetime of observation and thinking” (17, p. 387).
3. Alfred Adler, the fine theorist: the contribute of Heinz L. Ansbacher
Analyzing thoroughly Adler’s thought, and more specifically, the way he used to publish it, we
should note, as Ansbacher remarks: “The great many pubblications Adler left behind were
essentially lectures; even his books were almost all collections of lectures. There is considerable
overlap to be found in them” (8, p. 4). To this we have to add how, in more than one occasion,
were his pupils or coworkers that organized the contents of his conferences so that they could be
published as books. Adler himself confirms this way of proceeding: “Adler )A1927, p. iii) confirm
this method of working in the preface to Menschenkenntnis, where he gives credit to a Dr. Broser,
who held a law degree, for having kept nearly complete notes of the Volksheim lectures on which
the book in based. ‘I am not exaggerating when I state that without his aid this book would hardly
have come into being’. He also gives credit to his daughter, Dr. Alexandra Adler, for proofreading
and completing the book ‘during a time in which I endeavored to win new friends for Individual
Psychology in England and the United States” (8, p. 390n). The fact that many of his books were
published by others putting together the material coming from his lectures, inevitably
brought to sacrifice the criterion of rigorous systematization of his works, so dear to other
thinkers, to the benefit of a diffusion of his thought in a way that would be accessible to anyone
and that anyone could apply for their own wellness. His method contributed a lot to downplay his
fine theoric elaboration, which is the fundament of Adler’s thought and which comprehension was
not facilitated by the lack of systematization in his works. In fact it is in this lack of systematization
44
that the Ansbachers find the main problem of Adler’s works and we agree: “As the editors
consider lack of systematization the great shortcoming of the extant writings of Adler, they
consider it their most important contribution to have provided the organization of the material,
including nearly all the headings and side headings” (15, p. xvii). To this we should, obviously,
add the continuous contribute by Heinz Ansbacher towards the systematization of Adler’s works
in the famous three volumes2, as well as towards an exegesis of his writings. Two are the main
points that follow from it: the first concerns the total autonomy of Adler’s thought from Freud’s,
well explained by the following expression “Adler was a freudian when Freud was an adlerian”;
the other concerns the fundamental distinction between the expression of community feeling and
social interest.
3.1 ) Adler was a Freudian when Freud was an Adlerian
Among the contributions by Ansbacher on this topic, it is particularly useful to remember that of
1961 starting with the words: “All those who have known Adler will be able to confirm Maslow’s
account that Adler strongly denied having ever been a student of Freud, or a disciple or a
follower” (6, p. 496), and ends with: “Adler was a keen student, critic, and coworker of Freud, he
never was his disciple as this term is generally understood. The notion of Adler’s discipleship was
originally established by Freud and has widely persisted throughout the literature despite efforts
to dispel it” (6, p. 504). This position was further elaborated, affirmed and refined throughout the
years until it was expressed so clearly during the special lecture that Ansbacher held for the
Congress of Abano Terme titled “Further Considerations on Adler-Freud Relationship” (9) – in the
sentence: “Adler was a freudian when Freud was an adlerian”. This is to underline the reciprocal
influence that the two thinkers had on each other, and this aspect is well underlined by the
adlerian perspective two years later through the analysis of Freud’s thought in three major phases
according to the relevance that the notion of man has in this thought. The first period goes from
1886 to 1900, when the notion of the Ego or better, in adlerian terms, the Self, was prevalent. In
this period the two thinkers got in touch. The next period goes from 1901 to 1922, phase in which

45
is predominant the mechanicistic notion of the human being and during which happens the split
between Adler and Freud. Finally the last period goes from 1923 to 1939, and here the Self
becomes important again. In fact it is in this phase that the psychoanalysis and the Individual
Psychology get close although not always recognized by the psychoanalysts (3). Incidentally we
learnt about the following writing by Ansbacher when he was preparing the fourth edition of the
Individual Psychology of Alfred Adler (5) in German: “The 4th edition was newly set so that it
looks better organized and has been provided with a new postscript by me. This is entitled ‘Alfred
It was originally published in Beiträge zur
individualpsychologie, 1992, 15, 121-127” (13). The writing was inserted also in our Italian
translation of the volume (2) with the approval of Ansbacher: “I am glad that the postscript has
been translated and will be included in the Italian edition of our book. As time goes on, I think
more and more in its direction” (14).
3.2) The recovery of the fundamental distinction between community feeling and social interest
This is the most relevant aspect both to document the substantial exegesis work by Ansbacher
and to prove which fine theorist was the founder of Individual Psychology. When Adler began to
lecture and to write in English, he had to find a proper term for the complex concept of di
Gemeinschaftsgefühl. Initially this was translated as community feeling but the atmosphere
around psychology at the time was positivistic and it was not quite right, not sufficiently scientific
or was too spiritual, so alternative translations were social feeling, sense of solidarity, communal
feeling, social sense or communal intuition: “Among these, ‘social feeling’ became the generally
accepted term” (11, p. 404). Throughout the years, and, mainly, after Adler’s death, there was a
great confusion about this term that in the end led to mistakenly think that Adler chose social
interest as the final translation of Gemeinschaftsgefühl. In fact, as Ansbacher demonstrated,
when Adler introduced in English the expression social interest he did not want to substitute it
with community feeling (or social feeling) but, simply wanted to introduce a new expression to
indicate a new concept or better to introduce in his theoric elaboration a distinction: “The term
‘social interest’ appeared for the first time in one of Adler’s (1929) first books originally published
in English. Subsequently he used soziale Interesse also in his German writings. He never meant
it to replace ‘community feeling’ or Gemeinschaftsgefühl, using both terms at the very end as they
stood for different concepts” (11, p. 404). For example, we have a clear evidence of this in
chapter 10 of Science of Living where we also read: “Let us study both the functioning of social
46
interest […] Social feeling and social adjustment are the right and normal compensations, and in
this sense it is almost impossible to find anybody – child or adult – in whom the striving for
superiority has not resulted in such development” (1, p. 105). In this period Adler underlined the
three social links and for that reason he distinguished between community feeling, term which
includes: “a spiritual state with a wide range of referents” (10, p. 407) and social interest that: “is
an action term limited to human beings” (11, p. 407). In other words, Adler: “qualified social
interest as the action-line of community feeling” (11, p. 405). Nevertheless, the misunderstanding
was born: “since no one took the trouble of really examining the two terms, ‘social interest’ was
mistaken as a synonym of ‘social feeling’ and accepted a new translation of
Gemeinschaftsgefühl” (11, p. 405). The matter reached the dimension that we all today know
mainly because: “When Dreikurs (1953) revised the book to which we referred initially, he
changed ‘community feeling’ throughout into ‘social interest’, explaining: ‘Adler’s
Gemeinschaftsgefühl has been translated into a variety of terms like ‘community feeling’, ‘social
feeling’ and ‘social interest’. Because Adler chose the last term in his latest works, we use it
throughout this book” (11, p. 406). To this regard it is useful to note what Ansbacher writes:
“When around the same time my wife Rowena and I embarked on editing and translating works of
Adler (1956, 1964b), we made the same error believing that ‘social interest had become Adler’s
final choice” (11, p. 406). When we were translating in Italian the works of Adler edited by the
Ansbachers we were notified by Ansbacher about this situation, both by sending us his work (10)
and a personal communication in which he said: “On this occasion I should I like to let you know,
that there is one matter in our book that I would like to change today. We translated
Gemeinschaftsgefühl throughout as ‘social interest’. That was a mistake. The translation should
be actually be ‘social feeling or better yet ‘community feeling’ ” (12). So concluding, we also think,
as Ansbacher wrote: “that the term and concept of ‘community feeling’ be reinstated next to
‘social interest’ , and the latter be limited to interactions whith humans, as Adler did” (11, p. 410).
