Ferry men are very useful people.Whether they use their canoe, or whether the gov-ernment has provided a big steel ferry, they bring youwhere you could not reach with your natural equipment.

That’s what we should be as Christians: Ferry menand women who help people to get where they couldnever reach with their natural abilities. Some have toget away from unhealthy behaviour (p.22), some haveto cross in their hearts from hatred to respect for theirleaders (p.4) and others may need to reach a life wherereading their Bible every day is just normal (p.13).

Years back in Congo I had to cross the Lualaba witha ferry man who was very drunk. The ferry with my caron it turned round and round on the river, it was gettingdark, and his assistant jumped off board for fear ofwhat would happen. By God’s grace he finally did man-age to restart the engine and take us to the other side. But we were not keen to use his services again.

What kind of ferry man or woman are you? Do peoplelike your help? Do they trust you that you will takethem safely where they could not have reached ontheir own? I pray that this magazine will help you tobecome a man or a woman who can ferry others towhere God wants them to reach.

David persecuted by the King

David was thinking about the same question. Hewas hiding deep down in a cave with his men(1Samuel 24). King Saul was outside with 3,000excellent soldiers. It was him, David, he was look-ing for!

After David had been anointed to be the futureKing of Israel, he had started to serve Saul, who hadbeen the anointed leader of God's people beforehim. David was a good warrior, he fought manybattles to defend Israel against their enemies, thePhilistines. God gave him success, the people lovedhim - but King Saul became jealous. He hated Davidand he was afraid that he would take away theKingdom from him. So one day in his palace, whilethe young man was calming the King's troubledspirit with some nice music, he took his spear andhurled it against David! He missed him and tried ita second time, but both times David was able toescape him. This was justthe beginning of severalyears of persecution forDavid. Many times the oldKing tried to find and killthe one whom God hadanointed to become his suc-cessor (1 Sam 18-26).

Will David kill the King?

And now, David saw Saulcoming, alone, into thecave where he was hiding.Nobody was there to pro-tect him. And David had400 men with him. Some ofthem whispered: “Now, goand get him! This is theopportunity that God hasprepared for you! Howmany times has he tried tokill you. Now finish him off!”David slowly moved to-wards the King, his swordin his hand. He crept upright behind him. He raisedhis sword - and cut off acorner of Saul's robe! Hismen couldn't believe whatthey saw! After a short while the King stood up andwent outside. David returned to his warriors. Theyblamed him: “Why did you not kill him? He was soclose! All your problems would have stopped rightaway! You would be King now!” But David rebukedhis men and said:

(1Sam 24:6). Then he followed Sauloutside the cave. He called out to him, boweddown and prostrated himself in front of Saul andsaid to him:

(v.11-12).

So what about Mulenga?

What should Mulenga do? He needs to take adecision. He could start fighting for his position ofleadership. That was what David's men wanted himto do. But in doing so Mulenga would become likethose whom he would like to replace: those olderleaders who are also fighting for their leadershipposition. He would not be any better than they are.David realised that Saul had been anointed by Godhimself to become King – and so it would have tobe God himself to remove him from this position.Just the fact that David was designated to becomeSaul's successor did not give him a license to kill oreven to harm him. He was still to respect him. Hewas not allowed to start up a rebellion. He was towait for the LORD to judge between him and Saul. His hand was not to touch him. Mulenga mighthave to escape the attacks of the older leaders, hemight have to step aside for a time, he mightchoose to serve another church if his present lead-ers do not want him to do so in their congregation

– Heis not allowed to gather friends, talk badly aboutthe leaders behind their backs and thus prepare histake over in the leadership. He certainly is notallowed to split the church (1 Cor 3:17).

Is my leader a Saul or a David?

Mulenga has an additional problem:

Saul and David had a lot in common. Both wereanointed by God. Both were outstanding men, dis-tinguished from others. Both showed initiative, both took responsibility to protect their peopleagainst their enemies, and both were praised highlyfor their achievements. It was like it is today: Lead-ers in our churches look very similar, whether theyare of Saul’s type or whether they follow David’sexample. All show initiative, take decisions, leadand protect the people of God, and have achieve-ments to present. For many, many years nobodycan say with assurance whether a leader has theheart of Saul or the heart of David. Both have mademistakes and committed sin. Even David becamean adulterer and a murderer. And it can change overthe years. Saul, when he became King, had a heartlike David (1 Sam 15:17). So how do you knowwhether you are serving under a Saul or under aDavid? There is no way you can know, unless Godreveals it. So if Mulenga would decide to startfighting his leaders because he thinks they are likeSaul and need to be replaced - he might actuallyfight people who have the heart of David, and whomGod Himself wants to be the leaders of this congre-gation at this time. He would be fighting God! Wouldthat be advisable?

So fighting the leaders is not an option for Mulen-ga. The main question Mulenga has to answer in-stead is this:

Hemight not be able to change the leadership situa-tion in the church. But the more important thingfor him to watch is his own heart.

(Proverbs 4:23). Paul emphasizes to his spiritualson Timothy:

(1Tim 4:16). And he reminds the elders of

Ephesus: (Actes 20:28). Before taking care of the

doctrine or the flock or anything else a leader is towatch his own heart. What kind of a leader isMulenga becoming?

A leader like Saul

Saul wants to see things done. He wants to beknown as a successful leader, and he wants toenjoy good things coming out of his position. Hefeels he has earned the right of having the bestthings for himself (1Sam 15:9). And he feels, hedoes not need to follow God’s commands so rigidly. Some disobedience has crept into his life (13:13-14; 15:22-23). But despite his sin, Saul wants to behonored before his people (15:30). And he becomesviolent when this honor is not given to him! Hewants to avoid shame and embarrasment at allcost (15:27)! -

Dear Reader, are you maybe a leader like this? One who expects honor, the church bicycle, or thebest food during church celebrations? One whofakes reports in order to look more successful?Somebody who thinks he does not need to showlove to brothers or sisters because you are theleader? Or maybe you feel you are the most impor-tant leader in your church, and the others shouldfollow your command? And you start shouting andbackbiting when somebody dares to ask a criticalquestion? - If some of these things are true in yourlife, then listen:

At least you behave like he did. In this casethe worst that can happen to you would be if ayounger man grows up to become a man of Godlike you were in your earlier years. Somebodywhom God uses to do his work, somebody whoknows how to preach and teach, somebody who isa blessing from God to His people. If others startrecognizing him, you become angry, you feelthreatened, you try to keep him down. You willwait for his mistakes, and you will make sure that

everybody knows about them. You will belittle hissuccesses, you will criticize him and his family, youwill start killing his reputation by telling bad thingsabout him in the church or even in the village(18:11;Matthew 5:21-22; James 4:11). You will discouragehim by not keeping your promisses (1Sam 18:17-19).You will rejoice when you see him in trouble with hisenemies, you will not help him (1Sam 18:17.25). Youwill present him with totally exaggerated or danger-ous demands (1Sam 18:25). You will use your influ-ence over others to harm him (1Sam 19:11). And youwill be aggressive against those who support him(1Sam 22:6-18). If confronted with your ungodlybehaviour you will reconcile quickly and superficial-ly - only to break the peace at the next convenientopportunity (1Sam 19:4-10; 24:16-22; 26:1-2). Isthis how you react to younger brothers and sisters? If yes, you seem to have a heart like SAUL.

A leader like David

David was used to serve: first his parents, laterthe King, then his people, and all the way long hisGod. He neglected his own safety and attacked alion, a bear, the giant Goliath, and thousands ofPhilistians. He put his trust in God. He enhanced

the public worship of God bycontributing dozens of beau-tiful songs (Psalms). He wasreliable, he kept his promis-es over many years (2Sam 9).He did not think high of him-self. He respected the God-given leader even if thatmade life very difficult forhim. At times he did misun-derstand God. He did com-mit sins. He did stupidthings which did not givehonor to God. He was notperfect. But he repented, hegrieved over his mistakes, hecame back to God. All in alleveryone could see that theSpirit of God was with himin power (1Sam 16:13). Hewas

(1Sam 13:14).

Now, you may think that you are not a Saul, soyou should be a David. Do not be quick in saying so.Remember that even Saul in the beginning lookedlike David. But if you a David, then that is ablessing for people around you. Then you will beknown as a willing servant, not despising jobs likesweeping the church, selling literature in your areaor thatching the roof of a widow in your village. Youwill take care of weaker Christians, protectingthem from “wolves” in church or village (Actes20:29). People will know that you live close to Godbecause you do not always say the same prayers, but you contribute to the public worship in a per-sonal and fresh way. They will trust you becauseyou always do what you said you would do. You donot talk bad about your leaders, you rather protectthem against wrong accusations. You try to maketheir lives easier. Of course you are not perfect, butif the Holy Spirit or another brother shows you yourmistake, you admit it. If you have taken somemoney that belongs to the church, you do not wait

till others bring up strong evidence against you. Yousimply confess before God and men what you havedone because you are sad about your sin. - Are youa leader like DAVID?

Saul or David?

Maybe you are honest enough to admit thatthere are elements of both in your heart. Althoughyou may try to look like David, there is a bit of theheart of Saul in you. Maybe even a lot. And let usremember this: It is not always the older leaderswho have a heart of Saul. Many of them are Davids. And many of the younger ones who would like tochase some of their elders, actually have a heartlike - ABSALOM! We will study his life in anotherarticle (2Sam 13-18).

Leaders are supposed to correct mistakes

Let us take the example of Jesus, John andJames. Jesus found them mending their nets,Mathew4:21. And they washed the nets in orderto catch the fish, Luke 5:1,2. A net which is notmended and washed cannot catch fish.

Now, after several years, John had stoppedmending nets, instead, he started correctingfalse teachings which were spread by heretics. In John's time and his leadership, he met here-tics who used to bring false teachigs. This wasthe reason he wrote 1John 2:26. And those falseteachers were in their midst. They were thesame people who were saying that Jesus wasnot the Christ, 1John 2:22. It is for this reasonJohn was telling them that Jesus has promisedus eternal life, 1John 2:25. That is why he triedto correct the wrongs which had gotten into thiscongregation, so that Christians can be in closefellowship with the Lord Jesus, 1John 2:27.

Servants of God ought to explain to the peopleto enable them understand how the Holy Spiritworks in them, 1 John 2:20, and to hold fast to

the gospel of salvation they first received in theword of God, 1John2:24. Indeed, it is good to contin-ue teaching believers the way to salvation and stayin the faith instead of wasting time arguing withthose who mislead others, Hebrews 12:3.

However, it is more important to receive newthings from the Holy Spirit than what we ourselveswant. It is therefore wrong to do our will at theexpense of God's will, 2John:9, Rev 22:18-19. It isbecause of this that John was careful to teach thetruth about Christ to the people. Therefore, newwells ought to provide people with living water sothat they can be mature people with a full measureof knowing Christ in depth.

Jesus came to correct what was destroyed

Jesus came to rectify what was spoiled here onearth, especially so for us who were ruled by the evilone. God sent him to come and straighten ourcrooked hearts, John 3:16. And we read from Ro-mans that they are made righteous only by hisgrace in Christ Jesus. Romans 3:24-26. Even in histeaching, he was adding new things on the old ones,Matthew 9:16-17, 5:17-18.

Let us see what Jesus is correcting

1. How to pray, John 4:21-23

2. How we will live in heaven, John 14:1-3

3. Our faith, Hebrews 12:2

4. His church, Eph 5:25-27

5. Reconciliation among differed brethren,Eph 2:13-16

6. Our nature, Heb 13:5

Indeed, there is a lot that the Lord is straighten-ing for us and we should therefore set our hearts onspiritual things and rectify the wrongs in us as wellas in the work of God as seen in the book of Revela-tion saying

, Rev 3:2-3. Indeed, if we neglectwhat is being destroyed even what is working willbe destroyed.

Killing the enemies in the promised land

God told Joshua that when they reach the prom-ised land they should kill everyone who lived there,Deuteronomy 7:1, Joshua 3:9-10. We have heardwhat God told Moses and Joshua to cleanse theircountry so that they do not learn the lifestyle ofCananites, but unfortunately they did not kill all ofthem; to the contrary, they spared some, Joshua

15:63. These same people that they spared, the Je-busites are the ones who started fighting them, we cansee this in the book of Judges. That is how it was alsowith Saul, God told him to kill the Amalekites, but heleft out some of them; the same people he spared arethe ones who later killed him, 1Samuel 15:1-9, 2Samuel1:1-10.

These words are a picture of the sin which is supposedto be killed in our bodies. Because if we do not kill thesin it will kill us instead, Romans 6:11-12. That is why weneed to kill the sin within our hearts in order to live inpeace with God, because if God has given us the powerto defeat sin, we must defeat without sparing any.Indeed if we spare just one sin, it will surely kill us whenit grows, James 1:15. Now is the time to redeem our-selves from our bad ways, James 4:8, because Jesus isthe perfector of our faith and gives us power to conquer. Therefore it means that where there is conquering, therehas obviously been so much fighting that there shouldnever be anything more to either bother or worry you.Paul says, “

Romans 8:37. My broth-ers and sisters in Christ, you should know that sin lookssmall... tomorrow it will grow and kill you.

Did you hear what this fool said, “This one is born inAfrica”? He forgot that actually his origin was in Japan,it is not about being born in Africa. The fierceness maynot diminish at all, instead it will just become moresimilar to its parents in its character. So it is also withChristians; some have belittled certain sins saying thatthey are very small, Isaiah 52:11, 2Corinthians 6:17. Wemust correct our ways as we are the holy ones of God,1Peter 1:15-16. The Lord Jesus has done the work ofsaving us but it is up to us to rectify our behaviour. Ifthere are certain things which are destroyed in youregarding your faith, this is the time to make amend-ments.

In allthese thingswe are more

than conquerorsthrough himwho loved us.

The next two hours John and his father were busyreading the passages that the Concordance indicatedunder “Sabbath”. They found out that God, after creat-ing the world in six days, had rested on the seventhday.(Gen 2:2-3). Later he told his people Israel to observethe same day, and that meant that they were notallowed to do any work on it (Ex 20:8-11). God did notwant them to gather food on the Sabbath day. At thesame time He took special care of them by providingextra food on Friday (Ex 16:21-30). Those who did notkeep the Sabbath had to be put to death (Num 15:32-36). Lighting a fire on that day was forbidden (Ex 35:3).The Israelites were also not allowed to carry loads. Godpromised Jerusalem to remain a centre of worship ifthey obeyed. If they would not keep the Sabbath holythen Jerusalem would be destroyed (Jer 17:21-27).

“I wonder how they do all that in this church,” saidJohn, “no work, no cooking, no fire on that day, no

carrying of water - and if you don’t observe it, you getkilled! That church should be empty by now!”-

“I don’t know how they go about that”, his fatherreplied, “you better ask them. But look at this passagehere. God was about to finish speaking to Moses onMount Sinai. Before he handed him the two tablets ofstone with the commandments written on them, hetalked to Moses about the Sabbath. God says

(Ex31:12-17). What do we conclude from this?”-

“God seems to treat the Sabbath as a sign of aspecial covenant between his people Israel and him-self, not so?” -

“Yes, true. So if you are a Jew, you have to observe theSabbath. But if you are from another nation like us...”

“... you don’t,” John completed his father’s sentence,“the commandment to keep the Sabbath is for Jewsonly!”

“Yes, and for those who join the Jewish belief andtheir covenant with God, as I found in Isaiah 56:2-8.”-

“But, Father, that’s what we did, not so? We joinedthem in believing in the same God as they do.”-

“Yes, but we do so under a new agreement, a newcovenant, and the sign of this is the blood of JesusChrist, not the Sabbath (Mat 26:28; 1Cor 11:25). InHebr 8:13 we read:

(Hebr 8:13). This newcovenant is between God and all people who believein him, not just the Israelites. Those who follow theLord Jesus have to follow the terms of the new cove-nant, not of the old one.”

“So what are the terms of the new covenant for us,Father?” asked John.

“That is a brilliant question, Son! You know what?”He looked up to the sky. “The heat is easing off, so weshould get back to our field. But these terms, we findthem in the teachings of the Lord Jesus and of hisapostles. In your Bible that is the New Testament.Let’s read it over the next say two months. You startwith Matthew, I will beginn with Romans, so we splitthe work. Let’s write down every command that wecan find in there. Every week we compare our results.Maybe we’ll read some more about the Sabbath, the firstChristians were Jews after all. And certainly we’ll find alot of other things that God wants us to observe. And wedo want to do everything that pleases God, not so?”-

“Yes,” his son nodded, “for sure!” John took theirBibles and the Concordance and brought them backinto the house. As he walked with his father back tothe field he thought how lucky he was to have a Dadwho trusted in the Word of God instead of believingeverything other people want to tell him.

What about you?Do you know the terms of the New covenant?

What are the commandments that the Lord Jesusexpects you to observe when you follow him? Doesthe Sabbath belong to them? - Maybe you do thesame as Francis and his father. Go through the NewTestament. Or do it with your friends. When fourpeople read one chapter each day, they are throughin two months. Write down everything that Jesusexpects us to do. Then send us your list. We will use

it when writing the second part of this story.

This dog was born on Christmas Eve in theyear 2002. He was born with 2 legs -

He of course could not walk when he wasborn. Even his mother did not want him. Hisfirst owner also did not think that he couldsurvive and he was thinking of 'putting him tosleep'.

But then, his present owner, Jude Stringfel-low, met him and wanted to take care of him.She became determined to teach and train thislittle dog to walk by himself.

She named him 'Faith'.

She used peanut butter on a spoon as a lureand reward for him for standing up and jumpingaround. Even the other dog at home encour-aged him to walk.

Amazingly, only after 6 months, like a mira-cle, Faith learned to balance on his hind legsand to jump to move forward. After furthertraining, he could now walk like a human being.

Faith loves to walk around now. No matterwhere he goes, he attracts people to him. He isfast becoming famous on the internationalscene and has appeared on various newspapersand TV shows.

In traditional African culture, charms andlove potions are part of family life. Whengrowing up, a young person is exposed todifferent types. Is it right for a Christian tomake use of these? This is a question I wres-tled with as a young Christian, coming from abackground where charms and love potionswere used without fear or questioning.

It was said that in marriage, love potionsare necessary to build, sustain and strength-en the marriage. How is a Christian couple torespond to this statement? What should weteach our children? As a young Christian, Iasked myself, "Is the God I have believed inable to care for me and protect me in everyaspect of life?"

WHAT ARE CHARMS?A charm is anything worn or used for its

magical effect or power. Charms are mostlyused as protective magic. They can be in theform of earrings, necklaces and rings. Theymay be worn around the waist or ankles, or inthe hair. These are said to be "individual",meant for the specific need of a person. Oth-ers are not worn, but put in the house, hungby the window or door, carried in a handbag,or hung on a pole in the field. These are toprotect houses, compounds, fields, villages, shops etc.

Charms are usually produced by medicinemen out of materials such as herbs, roots, thebark of trees, leaves, insects, skins, bone andanimal horns. In themselves, most of thesematerials are harmless. In fact, modern medi-cine dispensed in hospitals and clinics, is

often made from plants and trees. But in the case ofcharms, these materials are mixed together with otheringredients, and then empowered magically by therepetition of a set of words. The medicine man, orwhoever prepares the charm, appeals to the spirit worldfor power to do good for the wearer such as healing, protection, bringing pleasure, or help in finances.

WHAT MAKES PEOPLE RESORT TO CHARMS?People often use these charms through fear - fear

of dying, or fear of witchcraft. They may use them outof envy, jealousy or greed - the desire to be moresuccessful than another person. Perhaps they want tobe loved. Or they may use them because "It's ourtradition." A grandmother or older relative may give ayounger family member a charm for a certain purpose -and the young person just accepts it without question.

HOW SHOULD A CHRISTIAN RESPOND?Firstly, a Christian is different from his or her unbe-

lieving friends and relatives. Paul writes in his letter tothe Ephesians,

" (Ephesians4: 17 -18).

The Christian is different because he knows God; heis a child of God; he lives in light, not in darkness. Sohe is required to live differently.

. Sadly, many Christians want to haveChrist and also traditional magic.

Perhaps they still believe that some magic is goodmagic, and therefore harmless for a Christian. Or per-haps they do not trust God sufficiently to take care ofthem, and feel they need some extra assistance fromthe spirits. It is time for individuals to think carefullyabout their practices. A true child of God will becareful to do only what pleases God, and to keep awayfrom anything from the old life which has to do withsuperstition, evil spirits or magic.

THE LAW OF GODIn the law given to Moses, God clearly states,

Leviticus 19:26.Verse 31 of the same chapter reads,

Deuteronomy 18 :9-13 warns the people of God notto imitate the practices of other nations; they are toavoid all forms of spiritism and magic. God is going topunish these nations because of their

HOW CAN A CHRISTIAN LIVE WITHOUTCHARMS?

The Bible is a very practical book. God knows allabout our fears and desires. He wants us to be freefrom the fear of death (Hebrews 2: 14-15). Jesus tookon a human body so that

God wants His children to learn to trust Him. David, the shepherd boy who became king of Israel, learnedhow to trust his Lord, even when he had severe trials.

What is the difference between elder, bishop, pastor and shepherd?

Let’s first look for an answer in the Bible, andthen see what the Church has made out of itover the years.

In Acts 20:17 Paul calls for the ELDERS of thechurch in Ephesus to meet him. In v.28 he saysthat the Holy Spirit has made them OVERSEERS(or BISHOPS) to SHEPHERD (or PASTOR) thechurch of God. The Greek word “episkopos” istranslated with both “overseer” and “bishop”,the Greek word “poimen” means “shepherd” and

“pastor”. That shows that in the New Testamentall four terms describe the same people. Eachterm emphasizes a special facet of their charac-ter and work, but all of them talk of one group:the leaders of a local Christian church (see also1Peter 5:1-2). The churches in the New Testa-ment were to be led always by several men whoshared the same God-given authority. Evenwhen some of them were to be supported finan-cially by others because they spent more timein their spiritual ministry (1Tim 5:17-18) therewas no one who had authority over the others -all of them were equals under the leadership ofChrist (1Pe 5:1-4). They even had been warnedby their Lord not to give titles to themselves orothers, because real leaders in the ChristianChurch are always humble servants, not lookingfor honor like the Pharisees (Mat 23:1-12).

Sadly very soon many churches departedfrom the New Testament model and teaching. One of the elders was placed in a position ofautority over the other elders and was called

“Bishop”. Later such “Bishops” became responsi-ble even for several churches. The Latin word

“Pastor” was introduced during the Reformationin the 16th century to be the Protestant title ofwhat was the “Priest” in the Roman Catholicchurch. Till today this title is used in mostchurches for the one or the most importantleader of a local church. Only in a few groupsthe “Pastor” works under the local eldership.

Despite all the obstacles, Ro quickly demonstrat-ed leadership qualities and was elected president ofthe Junior Christian Endeavor. He accepted theposition with enthusiasm; and, displaying unusualmaturity for his age, he organized the group intowitnessing teams to evangelize neighboring villag-es following the example that had been set beforehim by his own father.

Though successful in his evangelistic outreach,Ro's education was plagued with difficulties, notthe least of which was learning the difficult Englishlanguage, so filled with inconsistencies. If ever abudding missionary translator struggled with animpossible foreign language, it was Ro. Yet he knewthat without it his future ministry would be severe-ly limited. Even though he spent long hours study-ing and “struggled until his brain ached,” he seemedto get nowhere.

It was only through a humiliating incident thathe began to conquer the language. He was asked tolead in prayer at a public prayer meeting conductedin English. He rose, trembling. 'Our Heavenly Father... ,' he began, and his mind went blank. He couldn'tthink of a single English word. He stood there inembarrassed silence, clutching the back of the pew

One highly respected and influential Third Worldmissionary statesmen is the internationally known Ro-chunga Pudaite, whose impact on Bible translation and

distribution has been immense. His concernfor his own Hmar tribe and for world evan-

gelism led him on a difficult and oftendiscouraging journey from a remote

jungle village in northeast India toWheaton, Illinois, where his mis-

sion, Bibles for the World, makesits headquarters.

In the first part of his life sto-ry we read how his fatherChawnga had shifted his familyto a new area in this remoteprovince in order to evangelize

and plant churches. Later he chal-lenged his son to obtain further

education so that he would be ableone day to translate the Bible into

the language of their tribe, the Hmar. After a six day long journey the 10 years

old Rochunga finally reached the nearestschool. Because his family was poor he had to

work every morning and evening in order to cover theboarding fees. He struggled through his classes doubt-ing whether he would even be able to finish the firstterm.

in front of him. He could hear his friends beginning togiggle. After six or seven minutes of tortured silencethe leader said a loud 'Amen.'

Ro was so ashamed of himself that he ran straightto his dorm bed when the meeting was over. He hidunder his covers and wept into his pillow, thinkingonly of running away before having to face his class-mates. By dawn, however, after agonizing through thenight with God in prayer, “a sweet calm came overhim,” and he was determined to win the battle. Aftercompleting his chores he went to the mission houseand borrowed a copy of the Book of Common Prayerand another prayer book, both in English, and vowedthat he would never again be at a loss for words whenhe was asked to pray. “Within two weeks he hadmemorized nearly every prayer in the books. The Eng-lish language, which had been hidden to him for solong, began unfolding for him. The humiliation inprayer meeting had driven him to just the right sourceof victory over the barrier that could have kept himfrom attaining his goal.”

There would be more mountains for Ro to conqueras he continued his education. After high school heentered St. Paul's College in Calcutta. Though he wasnow in his early twenties, thecompetition was fierce, andRo had never fully overcomehis early educational disadvan-tages as a Hmar youth. Whenhis exam results were postedhe found that he had failed -by only one point in one sub-ject, but it jeopardized the re-mainder of his collegeeducation and meant retakinga year of work.

Despite the setbacks, Ronever deviated from his goal of translating the Bible forthe Hmar tribe. Nothing, he vowed, would distract himfrom that project. During his college years he beganthat awesome project allotting precious study time forthat purpose. But there were distractions, not the leastof which involved the very future of his own tribe. As aresult of an interview that Ro had with the Indian PrimeMinister Nehru, the tribe had been granted governmentrecognition, and he was chosen as the tribal representa-tive, with the hope that he would one day be elected toa seat in Parliament. It was an exhilarating time, and Rowas bathing in his newly acquired recognition and popu-larity. On the day of the victory celebration, however, everything changed. Ro received a telegram that forcedhim to reevaluate his future. The message was from aman he had never met, Watkin Roberts, the missionarywho had led his father to Christ - offering to underwritea Bible education for him in England or Scotland. It wasa difficult decision, but when Ro stood up to speak, instead of giving an acceptance speech, he resignedfrom his newly elected position.

MUKATI KA

CHRISTIAN BRETHRENINTERNAL

As Editor and Advisory Team of this new magazinewe would like to give a short financial report to theleaders of the Christian Brethren churches and anyother interested brothers and sisters over the first yearof its work.

By God’s grace, we have been able to print foureditions, although the distribution of No.4 was mainlyin 2010. Churches and youth groups in Germany andAustria contributed the start-up funding, and volun-teering brothers and sisters from Luanshya, Samfyaand Kasama together with CMML Mission Kasamaserved in the areas of editing, translating, checking, printing and stapling the magazine. 20-25 brothers inLuapula, Copperbelt and Northern Province facilitatedits distribution to those who have been named as SalesAgents by their church leaders.

Alas, a number of them got frustrated and stoppedworking because many people in our churches don’twant to pay for the magazine, and the leaders often arenot supportive of this work. The result for last year wasthat only 30% of the production costs were recoveredfrom the sales. This has to be changed, otherwise themagazine can not continue.

Therefore we kindly request you as leaders in ourchurches to get involved. Buy the magazine yourself, show that it is worth being paid for! Encourage andsupport your Sales Agents! Supervise the faithful re-turn of the income to your Provincial Coordinator! Weare sorry, but churches can only receive as many copies ofa new magazine as they have paid for from the last one.

We are very interested to hear from you, please writeus! We look forward to further develop this work to-gether with you for the edification and strengtheningof His Church. Let us pray for each other in the differ-ent responsibilities we carry in the Lord’s work!

What really matters... is whether Christ lives in you or not.

Paul says in 2 Corinthians 13,5:

HIS life should be the “SIM Card” thatpowers and drives you. That would be bestfor yourselves and everybody around you.And it would honour your Creator.

There are many others who want to pro-vide us with their “SIM Cards”, e.g. progress, fashion, free sex, professional success, fame and honour, lazy dependency, or evenwrong religious activism. Some of them aregood, others bad, but all of them are danger-ous if given absolute authority in our lives –which is the main agenda of the “Mega-Company” behind it all: the devil. He hasbut one goal: nobody should charge his orher life with the life, the love and the powerthat comes from God! He will do everythinghe can to prevent your life from being pro-pelled and directed by Jesus Christ.

Which “SIM Card” do you have?Do you know? Maybe you always

thought you are a Christian. But thinkingabout it now, you realise that the friendsand acquaintances that are stored on your

“SIM Card” don't quite fit with God's ideas foryou. Maybe you realise that you don't reallywant Jesus to know all about many of the

“SMS” of your life that are found under“Inbox” and “Sent items” in your brain. Andwhen has He been allowed for the last timeto determine one of your decisions or choic-es?

Jesus did not just pay a K5,000 to pro-vide you with a new “SIM Card” – He gaveHis life! You can have it for free, but obvi-ously the offer implies a permanent change:You must throw away your old “Card”, andthen you position JESUS CHRIST in itsplace – right in the middle of your life, where the decisions are taken over relation-ships, schedules, games, communicationsand everything else of importance.

If you are not sure – the answer is in theBible! Study it with one of your churchleaders, or contact

“SIM CARD”WA CINE?

Tract No.1

DIDYOU GET

THE RIGHT“SIM CARD”?

No matter who... you are. You may be a taxi driver

somewhere in town. Or you are on yourway to school. Maybe you are a businessman and want to be in reach 24 hours perday. Or you are on the road to get homefrom visiting some family in another prov-ince. Don't know. What is clear is: MobilePhone has changed our lives! Five yearsago, you were in trouble if you had tocancel a workshop last minute. Today youphone your brothers in Isoka or Mpulungu

– provided the network is not down...

No matter how... important your message is: Even the

fanciest phone is useless, unless youhave inserted a SIM Card. That piece ofplastic gives your phone its identity. Onlythen it can respond. Only then it remem-bers the numbers of your friends. Andonly then you can postpone a meeting onyour way to some other urgent business –provided you've got some talk time left...

No matter where... you are from. Whether a Chief's son

or a school girl. Whether a bandit or abank director. Whether you drive a BMWor walk on your two feet, your SIM Cardlooks always the same. Mrs.Bwalya mayoperate it in her K2-million-cellphonewhile Mr. Chanda got his for 150 pin inNakonde – but both have got exactly onenumber on it, and both their SIM Cardshave the same memory – provided theyare still intact...

No matter what... the name of the company that has

provided your SIM Card – to get it is cheap,to operate it is expensive. You sometimeswonder what we used all that money forbefore we got our mobile phones. What interms of good food, school fees, churchofferings or payments of bills gets post-poned or cancelled here in Kasama, be-cause the Cellphone today was the firstone to pull money from our pockets? Ithas been just 2 or 3 years, and some of usthink already we can't survive withoutthat piece of equipment – not even dur-ing the church service...

No matter whether... you are the proud owner of a mobile

phone or not – here is a question for you:Whose name is on the SIM Card of your life?We are not talking about Cell-Z, Celtel orMTN. But men and women are like cell-phones, we need something in us that tellsus who we are and how we are going tofunction. So who has produced the “chip”that gives you your unique identity? Whatdetermines how you respond to an interest-ing job offer, or to the aspect of a beautifulwoman in town, or to an opportunity toserve somebody? These are like “calls” fromsomebody – what is it in you that makesyou to respond or to resist? Which nameappears on your “screen”, when you switchyourself on in the morning? And how muchare you paying for the services with your

“company”? Some have heavy prices, theydon't tell you the real units you get, andthere are hidden costs involved – especiallyin the end...
