Sight and Sound Reading Program Skills and Strategy for Word Ladder Poster Program

The Word Ladder Poster Program is to teach and reinforce letter patterns and rhyming, through writing and repetition. The Word Ladder Poster Program uses word riddles and questions to help strengthen vocabulary development. The riddles and questions encourage children to think about the meaning of the words, as they use them in learning to read. The Word Ladder Poster Program choral sound blending and writing component helps eliminate phonetic frustration. This Writing Ladder Program builds phonics and spelling confidence and personal self-esteem.

Children have to be taught, and must practice sound blending. This program has been tested. Even children who presumably could not learn phonetically, with non-threatening choral reinforcement, acquire the phonetic ability to make reading and spelling so much more enjoyable. This is an extremely easy program to teach. The directions are the same for each day -only the words will change. You can do the program in one, two, or three days -depending on the student or students you are instructing. The third day instructions are, by far, the most important skill of the program.

The first day:

1) Read up and down the 'ladder' several times. Using a "pointer" is very helpful. (Cardboard from coat hangers makes very good pointers). 2) Talk about the vowel sound repeated in each word. Point out any particular phonetic skill being repeated. 3) Discuss any meaning of words, if necessary. 4) Read up and down the 'ladder' two more times.

The second day:

1) Read up and down the Word Ladder two times. 2) Review the meaning of any words that might be 'new' to the children. 3) Ask the word riddles and questions to encourage the children to think about the words and use them in context. 4) Read up and down the 'ladder' two more times.

The third day:

Additional and Optional Word Ladder Sound Blending and Writing of words: 1) Read up and down the Poster Word Ladder two times. Put it away. 2) Teacher, take a Blank Poster Word Ladder with only the word ending pattern printed on it. Give each child a Blank Word Ladder black line master with the corresponding word ending pattern and number of steps (rungs) needed. The word ending pattern base is always the first step on the ladder bottom. 3) Chorally, sound blend and write the letter pattern words, starting on the step above the printed letter pattern base. (Remember, directions will be much the same for all the word endings -only the letters, sounds and words will change. The teacher dialogue that follows, will demonstrate with the very first word ending,'ack'.)

Teacher dialogue: • "Today we are going to write on our Word Ladder together, words rhyming and ending with 'ack'.

When we make a Word Ladder, remember, we always start at the bottom, and climb up the ladder. Again, our word ending for today is 'ack'. Let's sound out and write our lack' words together." (Teacher sound blends with the class and writes the letters and words on the Poster as the children write at their desks.)

Teacher, discuss phonetic "short a word" -see next page for directions. Teacher, as you write the first word on the ladder, take the time to make sure all of the class is starting on the correct rung.)

• "Our first word that ends in -ack' will be 'back': This is my back" (Teacher points to her back). (Teacher sound blend and write each letter. Encourage the children to make the sounds with you. Eventually, it becomes very automatic to them.) "bbb" (write 'b') "aaa",short 'a','aaa"' (write 'a')

• "Now 'kkk',what two letters both say 'kkk'? ('c' and 'k') • "Yes,'c' and 'k',both say 'kkk'. In the word 'back', we have to write both the 'c' and the 'k' to make

the 'kkk' sound." (Write 'ck') • "Super 'bbbaaakkk','back'. What is this word?" ('back')

What is this word?" (Teacher, proceed to sound blend and write all the remaining 'ack' words in the same manner. 'pack','rack','sack','tack',black) 4. Class read up and down the word ladder again two times. This is now ready for them to take home. Or, save them for an individual Word Ladder Book. The class word ladders can be hung where the children can ' climb them with a pointer.' (The cardboard from coat hangers make excellent pointers).
