My Dear Brothers and Sisters,Jai MohyalWith great pleasure, I wish you all a veryhappy, satisfying, safe, healthy, progressiveand productive journey through 2021.As you would be aware, the election for thenew 'Managing Committee' has duly beencalled. The Elect ion Committee(Shri K K Bali- Convener, Dr Subash Dattaand Brig Arun Bali), has already taken inhand the task of organising and conductinga 'free and fair' election. We as a Community, need to ponder over the kind of 'ManagementTeam', qualitatively, we need to elect, to enable the GMS to functioneffectively. GMS has two major and onerous functional responsibilitiesto discharge. Firstly, is to ensure the safety, care and maintenance, together with cost-effective and efficient functioning, of the assets andresources of the Community, wherever they exist. Secondly, the GMSManagement has the task to ensure, optimally, the planning andexecution of the welfare schemes for the 'needy' within the Community. These two, in turn, lead to some very significant 'calls' on theCommunity members. The 'first call' relates to the undeniable need for a good number ofmembers of our Community, particularly men and women, speciallyyounger men and more women, with expertise and experience inlegal, financial, accounting, human resources and IT fields, to,voluntarily, offer their services as part of the 'management' by standingfor the GMS Managing Committee Elections. Their services would beneeded in 'advisory, supervisory and administrative roles' to managethe GMS at Delhi, and its outstation 'Institutions' (Ashrams, Schools,Bhawans etc). This presupposes that, first, all of those elected wouldassuredly find time to perform the assigned 'role' and second, therewill be at least some members elected who are either co-located orlocated in close vicinity of the GMS/outstation Institutions. The 'secondcall' relates to the voters who, by way of preparation, would need toacquire good knowledge about the capabilities and personal attributesof the contesting candidates, to assess and decide, based on relativemerit, about their suitability to be part of the Management Team.Elections, by their very nature, at times give rise to strong feelingsand emotions, resulting in negative talk or actions, which must beavoided and should not be done. Let us ensure maximum positivity, toprotect and keep alive our Unity, Cohesion and the Spirit of Bonhomie, within the Community. Finally, my sincere advice to you all. Let not the 'Administration ofVaccine' make you complacent. The danger continues to lurk. Therefore, continue to wear masks and observe social distancing forsome more time, for your own safety.God Bless You All.

Yours Affectionately

Lt Gen G L Bakshi, PVSM (Retd), President GMS

IN BLISSFUL BONDAGE

KEY TO A HAPPY HOMEThe human civilization, since time immemorial works onthe line of segregation. Be it, the segregation of people, segregation of customs, segregation of tribes, countriesetc. With that, the human civilization has also segregatedcertain roles on the basis of gender.

Traditionally, the man assumed the role of the protectorand the provider of his pack, and the role of the nurturerand the caregiver was of the woman. As a consequence, the man got exposed to the outer world and left their markas explorers, inventors and teachers, but the womanstayed inside the boundaries of the house she made ahome.

More recently with the world wars, the world saw the riseof women as an important part of the work force, whichwas upto this point, dominated by men. With men going tothe great war by the millions, women stepped into the manycivilian and military jobs they left behind.

This kickstarted the modern quest of women empowermentand though the progress was slow, the conditions forwomen have changed remarkably since. Today, womenmake a big percentage of the workforce and work shoulderto shoulder with their male counterparts. Today, providingfor the family is not the sole responsibility of the man but itis shared mostly by man and woman.

Things have changed a lot for women outside the house, but inside the house, the situation is not very different frombefore. Most working women are still expected to cook, clean, wash for the entire family single-handedly whilemanaging their professional duties. In most cases, menrefuse to share domestic duties, which leads to a lot ofburden on women who have to manage a lot. Life becomesdifficult, and they hardly get any time for themselves asan individual, resulting in frustration, problems in marriageand in some cases, mental health problems likedepression.

This behaviour of men can be attributed to a primitiveunderstanding of masculinity, where it is beneath men tolend a hand around the house. This makes it of utmostimportance for us as a society to redefine masculinity andfemininity as a whole, and how there’s no segregation ofroles now, but an era of equality both inside and outsidethe house. This way we can have a household which ishappy and full of mutual respect.
