Does Facebook have a chance to Survive

The first time I started using Facbook was February 2010 when I had only about 10 to 12

friends whom I had already known from my school years but as the time went on I have been

attracting several friends from various places by sending and receiving friend requests Even I

have a friend from New Zealand whom I have never met face to face but we have been

exchanging our ideas through Facebook Additionally I am in touch with the people we were

together once but they have left now Not only I do share my own pictures feelings ideas on my

wall but I am also aware of what is happening with my friends by receiving their feelings

writings and ideas in my page Doesn t matter wherever they are we are in touch with each other

by sharing everything we want We are so involved with Facebook that we even cannot pass one

day without having a look at our pages and finding out what is happening with everyone we

know But to consider it as a business let s find out whether the Facebook which has widened

our social connections for the last several years would continue in helping us to broaden our

social networks further or we should just switch to other social networks such as LinkedIn

Twitter My Space Google+ and several coming small social networks in order to keep in touch

with our friends

Going through the history of Facebook since it is established by a Harvard Sophomore

student Mark Zuckerberg it shows that Facebook became so popular in a short time It attracted

more than 450 visitors and 22000 photos in its first four hours and after two weeks of its launch

Facebook had about four thousands users It attracted about a million people just after ten weeks

Its membership growth continued until the number of active users reached over one billion

people Besides its membership growth the value of this social network Facebook has been

growing so rapidly from a few thousand dollars to billions of dollars Its market value became

about $15 billion when Microsoft bought about 16 percent of the firm in 2007 and after four

years in 2011 the market value of Facebook was about $70 billion (Information System)

However every business has their own peak and growth period but they won t last forever if a

business doesn t consider its problems And the essence and sustainability of a business in a

market is its competitiveness As the Facebook has been known as one of the most successful

social networks by defeating its competitors for the last several years it is facing various new

challenges which treat its sustainability in the future

The history has shown that no business lasts forever There has always been a

replacement for an existing business and the customers switch to where the service satisfies

them Facebook has also been losing its users and investors for the last several months due to

various problems According to Sean Atkinson a research done in America shows that 35 of

overall users say they use the Facebook service less and less over time and companies are

getting to the same approach which is to stop advertizing on Facebook as General Motors did by

canceling its $10 million advertisement right before Facebook offers its IPO (Initial Public

Offering) in the market (Atkinson) As a result Facebook s IPO fall by 27 percent which was

the largest two-week loss of any IPO since 1995 and its stock was left to struggle in the market

which led the pundits to predict the death of one of the most popular social networks in the

world according to Stacey Leasca s article in Alaska Dispatch website (Leasca) To find out

why Facebook is encountering such an unexpected fate in its short term existence there are

various problems with this popular social network to be considered by the Mark Zuckerberg if he

wants to compete against its rivals in current market

First of all privacy protection is one the most important issues that Facebook users face

during the last several years Everyone is posting a request in their walls to make their friends

bring some changes in their pages sittings because what she posted belonged to her families not

everyone she knows As a matter of fact it is not the job of users to request everyone and ban

them from having access to their private family pictures or announcement but that is what

Facebook should have done by creating some features which should let its users to share only

with expected people Additionally users don t like to watch everybody s post every time he

opens his page or their activities be tracked by everyone he has connection with except in some

circumstances Or everyone likes to share something with only a limited people or would like to

know about them first It could be their families colleagues or close friends but not everyone he

knows For instance one of the problems that Facebook users have is Event In incident that

happened with a German girl in Homburg left several damages because she had accidently

posted an invitation of her 16th birthday party for the event as public As a result 1600 guests

had shown up instead of 15-20 people and the host had to deploy a hundred police officers to

control the crowd Consequently the party ended with arresting several people for assaulting

property damages and had eleven injured (Crimesider)

Secondly the serious problem Facebook is facing is lack of trust of its customers in

spending millions of dollars to advertise their products on Facebook by creating a page What

companies do to advertise their products in Facebook is to only create a page and post their

announcements product pictures or any other event but what they get in return for spending

millions of dollars is a report of how many people have liked their pages That is the report that

the customers receive from Facebook office But when people like a page it doesn t mean that

they are going to buy the product they liked in Facebook definitely There might be different

reasons why some people do press the Like button when they are using their Facebook

accounts For instance it could be a nice picture of product that some people like it or it could

be happened too that a picture is posted by someone s friends and he presses the like button to

show her they are on the same boat

In addition to this problem the number of Facebook users in Mobile is growing very

fast According to the article of Somini Sengupata in The New York Times Facebook has over

one billion active users and 41 of users are using Facebook in a mobile device (Sengupta)

And the mobiles devices don t have so many applications to show different kinds of

advertisements on mobile This is another reason that why customers are not satisfied and are not

getting a positive result though they are spending millions of dollars on their Facebook

advertisements So ignoring the large and increasing number of Mobile Facebook users is

another serious threat against the existence of Facebook Corporation Hence if the companies

stopped advertising in Facebook and go somewhere else the collapse of Facebook is almost

predictable sooner than it is expected because about 83 of its revenue comes from

advertisement and only 14 revenues come from Zyga an online gaming company (Elston)

Third rivals have always posed a threat against an existing company If a company

doesn t perform will some other would enter into the market by offering a better service where

everyone s safety is assured and are satisfied The most serious threat for the Facebook in current

market is its two fast growing rivals Twitter and Google+ Based on Lennox Yieke s claim

about twitter s growth twitter is expanding every day and is increasingly becoming popular

among young people Lennox Yieke says Many businesses are also using Twitter for customer

complaints to reach out their consumers and more And it has also been trying to make an

alliance with one of the most popular and successful PC and Touch devices company Apple

The alliance of Apple with Twitter will lead this fast growing social network to focus more on

growth and additional products which would be like and better than Facebook Additionally

Twitter has been receiving fewer complaints from its users and customers than Facebook

Besides its rival Twitter Facebook is facing another serious rival which is one of the

biggest competitions in the market for Facebook called Google+ The growth of Google+ has

been a great shock for Facebook in its eight years existence because just in two weeks after its

something which has led it into a great competitor against the Facebook The latest innovations

of Google+ including Circle Sparks and Hangouts have been counted as a serious attack

To conclude Facebook is better to consider about the quality of its performance rather

than releasing their daily reports of increasing the number of its users Having large number

active users doesn t work anymore because what matters to survive in current market is to have a

large number of customers to be willing to advertise their products in Facebook Facebook needs

to evolve by inventing some new features which should keep not only its customers satisfied but

also its users Users shouldn t be worried about the way of sharing process anymore neither its

customers by receiving an idle report of how many have pressed the Like button which would

mean nothing at the end Or else the period of existence of Facebook as a great social network

would get to its end because there has always been a replacement for an existing service in the

market If Facebook doesn t change itself and not listen to the desires of its customers and users

the predictability of its collapse would be changed into reality And there would be no Facebook

for the next coming years As the following graph shows the revenue of Facebook has fallen

down from 83 percent to 30 percent between the first quarters of 2011 and second quarter of

2012 then it definitely seems too hard to Facebook Corporation to survive But now what DO

the largest two-week loss of any IPO since 1995 and its stock was left to struggle in the market

which led the pundits to predict the death of one of the most popular social networks in the
