WELCOME TO JODHPUR

Jodhpur is the second largest city in the Indian State of Rajasthan. It is located 335kilometers west from the state capital, Jaipur and 200 kilometers from the city of Ajmer. It was formerly the seat of the princely state of the same name, the capital of thekingdom known as Marwar. Jodhpur is a popular tourist destination, featuring manyplaces, forts and temples set in the stark landscapes of the Thar Desert.

The climate of Jodhpur is generally hot and semi- arid, but with a rainy season fromlate June to September. Temperatures are extreme throughout the period from Marchto October, except when monsoonal rain produces thick clouds to lower it slightly. Inthe months if April, May and June, high temperatures routinely exceed 40 degreesCelsius. During the monsoon season, average temperatures decreases slightly. However, the city’s generally low humidity rises and this adds to the normal discomfortfrom the heat.

The city is known as the “Sun City’’ for bright, sunny weather it enjoys all year. It is alsoreferred as the “Blue City’’ due to the blue-painted houses around the Mehrangarh Fort. The old city circles the fort and is bounded by a wall with several gates. However, thecity has expanded greatly outside the wall over the past several decades. Jodhpur liesnear the geographic centre of Rajasthan state, which makes it a convenient base fortravel in a region much frequent by tourists.

The handicrafts industry has in recent years eclipsed all the industries in the city. Bysome estimates, the furniture export segment is a $200 millions industry. Other itemsmanufactured include textiles, metal utensils, bicycles, ink and sporting goods. Aflourishing cottage industry exists in the manufacture of such items as glass bangles, cutlery, carpets and marble products. After handicrafts, tourism is second largestindustry of Jodhpur. Crops grown in the district include Wheat and the famousMatharia Res Challies; gypsum and salt are mined. The city serves as an importantmarket place for wool and agricultural products.

Some of the important fairs and festivals held are Marwar Sufi Festival, Gangaur, Teej,Nag Panchami Fair, Mahavir Jayanti and Shiettla Mata, Jodhpur can boast of a firstclass grass polo ground that will doubtless produces the next generation ofinternational Jodhpur players and play host to potential Indian Starts and the best ofthe country and the world.

A number of Indian delicacies have originated in Jodhpur. To name a few: MakhaniyaLassi, Mawa Kachori, Dal Bati Churma, Panchkuta Lapti etc.
