IntroductionMedical coding is a health-care function that involves analyzing the patient record and converting information about the pa-tient, their condition and treatment into a coded format. A medical coder uses their knowledge of healthcare and the classifi-cation system to represent a patient’s care experience and assign standardized codes.ICD-10-AM 10th Edition and ACHI are the set of codes used in Saudi Arabia in all healthcare settings. Around the world the International Classification of Diseases 10th edition (ICD10) and its national variations such as ICD-10-AM 10th edition is used to collect and report details of disease, while many countries also use the Australian Clas-sification of Health Interventions (ACHI) is the code set used for procedure reporting.

Program overviewLearning Methodology:The modules of the Medical Coder training program all will offer:

• Video tutorials on the specific topic• Learner’s guides – which include textbooks as well as a study guide that answers questions you may have.• Video presentation of the main content where relevant.• References that will help you get more information from other sites and documents.• Formal assessment that improves and builds your confidence and skills as you go through each module. Each module includes question sets and materials centered on a specific topic.• Question and answer zoom meeting

Learning Support:• Our qualified and experienced tutors are there to help you while you complete the course at your own pace, from anywhere in the world. • Our tutors will answer your questions and provide feedback • Students get access to a simulated clinical coding environment with real patient records – as a result students understand the prac-tical as well as the theory of clinical coding.• Help with system access and code book issues

Program ObjectivesUpon successful completion of this program, students will be able to:

• Analyze a health record and select the diagnostic, health status and procedural information needed to sup-port funding, and required reporting.• Identify areas where clinical documentation could be improved to support improved patient care, legal re-cords, and financial claim evidence.• Use the structure and apply the rules for International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems – Tenth Revision – Australian Modification (ICD 10 AM) and ACHI to provide consistent coding which sup-ports financial requirements, audit and service analysis

What Skills should medical coders have to be?• Detail oriented• Able to work through complex instructions and in-formation in English• Focused with regular time set aside for study as coding requires dedicating time to study and work hard.• An active learner by asking questions and partici-pating to fully understand. All clinical coders must be independent learners.• A researcher who is able to keep up to date to new changes as medicine and code system change regularly. A genuine interest in medicine and clinical practice is essential. Constantly read and research new rules to have a solid understanding of medical conditions, treatments, or drugs.

Skills and knowledge Clinical coders need to have:• Knowledge of medical terms including basic anatomy and physiology. • Knowledge of words used to describe clinical concepts. • The ability to analyze and dissect a word to un-derstand the meaning, if it is an unfamiliar or new word.• Understand the relationships between healthy bodily processes, symptoms, diseases and how these are analyzed and treated.

Coding basics• Correctly use the code books and standards.• Systems and tools used when coding.• Responsibilities and ethics of medical coding for coders, and clinicians.• The ability to read and analyze a patient full record even when handwritten.• The ability to recognize, comprehend, and correctly in-terpret content to support appropriate selection of con-ditions and treatments (Abstracting) which need to be coded.• The ability to analyse the relationships between symp-toms and underlying conditions, principal diagnosis allo-cation and associated coding standards• Assign codes accurately to episode of care across all healthcare specialties.

Tips to Achieve Success in the Medical Coding Program• Set aside regular time to progress. You’ll need to code on a regular basis to improve your abilities and speed.• Proceed in the sequence in which the courses are presented; don’t go on until you’ve completed each question set.• Make use of the available resources, such as movies, learner’s manuals, tutorials, and practice.• Complete all of the practice questions – then ask questions about anything you don’t understand.• Don’t do assessments until you’re comfortable and performing well in practice. If you don’t understand a condition or treatment, research it.
