Joining in an Alliance of Virtue

Last fall, I was invited to travel to Morocco with Mufti Asif Umar, Imam of the Islamic Foundation of

Greater St. Louis, and Reverend Darren Casper of the St. Louis Metro Baptist

Association. During our short visit as part of the American Peace Caravan, we joined with similar teams from 20 cities around the U.S. to forge new multi-faith relationships.

In early February, we joined 350 other faith leaders in Washington D.C. for the three-day “Alliance of Virtue” conference, organized by the Forum for Promoting Peace in Muslim Societies and its leader, Shaykh Abdallah Bin Bayyah, a Saudi Arabian Islamic Studies professor. The outcome of our gathering was to issue the “Washington Declaration,” a bold commitment to peacemaking within our society, led by the three Abrahamic Faiths – Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

The Washington Declaration proclaims that “[W]e cannot love and serve God if we fail also to love our neighbors — including the strangers in our midst. Recognizing that our shared values are more important than our differences, and that we are strongest when we act together, we pledge to combine our best efforts to foster unity where there is discord, aid the impoverished, tend the vulnerable, heal the poor in spirit, and support measures that will ensure respect for the dignity of every human being. We will be guided in this endeavor by convictions that flow from our deepest theological understandings.”

Acknowledging the special responsibility that faith leaders – and people of faith – have to ensuring that the teachings of our faiths are not distorted or used to destroy peace, the Washington Declaration explains: “We reject the polarization that leads to conflict and war. We are determined to deepen our solidarity and thereby ensure that religion is a force for reconciliation and harmony. We pledge to work across confessional divides in support of values that are central to each of our faith traditions,

including peace, mercy, forgiveness, compassion, justice, and truth…. In that spirit, we promise to exchange ideas, train and encourage our congregants to engage in joint projects and advocacy, form partnerships with relevant national and international actors, reach out to the leaders of other faith and ethical traditions, and create a model of collaboration that people of all religions can pursue in support of the common good.”

We at Shaare Emeth have a long history of engaging in interfaith work, and I look forward to mobilizing our resources to build upon that strong foundation as we continue to lead in building partnerships – particularly across the divides of faith, ideology, politics, race, economic and social separation and prejudice that have kept us apart. With our new friends and partners in the Muslim and Evangelical communities, as well as with those friends we have nurtured for years in the

interfaith community, I look forward to growing relationships and increasing peace.

50-Day Meditation and Middot Challenge

The seven-week period between the holiday of Passover (celebrating our liberation from

Egypt) and the holiday of Shavuot (celebrating our receiving the Torah at Mt. Sinai) is known as Sefirat HaOmer, the Counting of the Omer. Traditionally, this is a time set aside for personal self-discovery and growth. People often engage in the weekly study of middot (ethical character traits) including compassion, strength, enthusiasm, truth, humility, beauty and equanimity.

This year during the Counting of the Omer, the Jewish Mindfulness Center of St. Louis invites you to participate in our 50-Day Meditation and Middot Challenge. Challenge yourself to meditate for at least 10 minutes every day and engage in at least one new practice a week to actualize these middot in your life.

Email Kim Oswalt at [email protected] if you would like to receive Rabbi Goldstein’s weekly email with a short teaching on the middah of the week and an audio meditation that you can listen to each day to help you on your journey.

From the PresidentThis year, the Board of Trustees

looked at our strategic plan and discussed how best to proceed

with our strategic initiative. We identified communication as something we need to work on and decided that we need to do a better job of communicating with each other, with the staff, with the

directors, with the clergy and with all of you. We try to keep our congregants up to date with what’s happening at the Temple by sending the Bulletin, mailing postcards, emailing updates and posting on Facebook, but we know we can do a better job. We want to be responsive to your needs and to communicate with you on a timely basis. Please don’t hesitate to let us know if you have any ideas about how we can do a better job.

Additionally, I think we can do a better job of communicating with those of you who participate on committees. You all do a lot of hard work, and we want you to know how much we appreciate you. We have a number of committees at Congregation Shaare Emeth, and regardless of what committee you are a part of, we want you to know that we are so grateful for all you do! Thank you to everyone involved in the Adult Education, Tzedek/Social Justice, Communications, Finance,

Investments, Building, Membership, Library, Caring, Mental Health and Wellness, Human Resources, Traffic, Fundraising, Seniors, Alzheimer’s, Morning at the Movies, B’Yachad and Young Couples committees, teams and initiatives.

If you aren’t part of a committee but are involved in some other way – maybe greeting or ushering for a Friday night service, picking up bread from Panera and delivering it to the food pantry or helping with Room at the Inn – we appreciate you!

Another way to stay in the loop is to get involved or attend some of our programs. The more you are around, the more you know. Be part of the Jewish mindfulness meditation sessions or come to an adult learning class. Attend our second seder or 3rd Annual Trivia Night. Bring the family to an upcoming Kibitz Café on March 11 or April 8. It’s the best breakfast in town! If you let me know you’re coming, I’ll meet you there.

If you’d like to participate in any way, please email me at [email protected] or contact Rosalie Stein at 314-569-0010 or [email protected].

Ner Tamid SocietyA Heartfelt Thank You to our Ner Tamid Society Members

On behalf of the entire Congregation, we would like to thank the 2018 members of the Congregation Shaare Emeth Ner Tamid Society. Through total combined giving of Membership

Responsibility, Annual Appeal and Special Commitments, these generous members consciously chose to accept a larger share of the responsibility for assuring the continued successful operation of Congregation Shaare Emeth.

We call this enhanced giving society the “Ner Tamid Society.” The Ner Tamid, the eternal light and the symbol of Adonai’s presence in our lives, is the heart of our sanctuary. Likewise, our Society members make up the heart of our Temple. By being part of the Ner Tamid Society, these members tend to the Shaare Emeth flame and help ensure it is lit for generations to come.

In addition to recognition in this Bulletin, you will find the names of our Ner Tamid Society members on the interactive monitors in the lobbies. We also invite these members to private events throughout the year.

Thank you to everyone that has participated. If you would like additional information on the Ner Tamid Society, please contact Rosalie Stein, Executive Director, at [email protected] or 314-569-0010.

“I have one talent, and that is the capacity to be tremendously surprised, surprised at life, at ideas. This is to me the supreme Hasidic imperative: Don’t be old. Don’t be stale.”

When I read this quote from Abraham Joshua Heschel, it reminds me of the wonderful teachers and staff at Shirlee Green Preschool. Every day I witness

the creative and “surprising” ways in which the teachers ignite the fire of knowledge within our preschoolers. I smile at the children’s energetic display of projects on the boards in the hallway – Unique as Snowflakes, S is for Snowman, Ferdinand The Bull, Making Magic and so many more. Each day, during

many of those inspiring moments, one can locate a specialist at the heart of that very moment. A specialist at Shirlee Green Preschool engages children in jump-starting a specific program.

One fine example is Ms. Barb Hoffman. Ms. Barb interactively teaches the Torah to the Pre-K class by utilizing props and costumes. They are transformed in time and in character to the story in the Torah. This submergence offers high retention and allows the children to imagine a different world.

Ms. Debby Finn challenges the children to view the world through whimsical colors during her art/science sessions. Although she encourages and directs a lesson, Ms. Debby is a firm believer in offering a white canvas in which each child develops their own interpretation. Ms. Debby realizes there is no right or wrong when creating and exploring.

Ms. Jill Milstein brings Judaism to the lives of the children, in partnership with the Shaare Emeth clergy. Through our monthly values and themes – such having fun, being courageous, making peace in the home and being a mensch – Ms. Jill promotes a life of Judaism. Her examples, stories and discussions express the true meaning of what it is to be Jewish.

And finally, the world may have Adele, but Shirlee Green Preschool has Ms. Holly Smith! Ms. Holly creates SGP groupies with her musical energy and contagious enthusiasm. She leads us at Shabbat each week and during special programs including the Chanukah sing-along and Chaverim Night. We cannot get enough of Ms. Holly, even during carpool karaoke!

The magic in the air at Shirlee Green Preschool is due to the individuals that devote and dedicate their lives to the children and this preschool.
