gentle words with which Esau was unfamiliar.Through this midrash, our tradition makes Esau look

like a bad son, unworthy of the birthright, in order todefend our patriarch, Isaac. While this is not my favor-ite motivation for a rabbinic story, I do think that wecan draw from it an important lesson: even the small-est word please, the most minute and simple of words, can change one’s approach to another person.

In my first shabbatot with SOJC, I have been ap-proached so kindly and warmly by others, and havecertainly tried to do the same. It is my hope that wecan continue to emulate Jacob and receive each other- our family members, friends, strangers, and allpeople in SOJC - with such kindness and warmth.

from the state, can be credited for the enormous Jew-ish presence in this country. If we take that causeand affect another step, we cannot discount the factthat the strength of the Jewish community in the USAhas bolstered the fledgling state of Israel, perhapseven ensuring its survival in a decidedly hostile world.

Even in these turbulent times of financial kaos andpolitical change we must count ourselves fortunate tobe Americans. We and our children enjoy one of thehighest standards of living in the world. The over-whelming majority of us sleep in a bed with a roofover our heads and a meal in our bellies. We take forgranted freedoms and rights that most peoples of theworld still do not possess. And yet, as a nation westrive to improve our society and that of the world atlarge. When we become complacent in our successand ambivalent to the condition of others, the Ameri-can Dream will die. Just as we Jews strive every yearto improve ourselves and the world around us, so musta great nation.

This Thanksgiving let us gather our kindred spiritstogether around a festive meal to celebrate the miraclethat is America. May our many colors, tongues, cul-tures, and religions paint a collage of hope and prom-ise for a world in need.

Here is a blessing with which to begin your Thanks-giving meal right before hamotzi.

Blessed be the Lord our God, Master ofthe Cosmos, all of Creation rightly owesYou thanks and praise. Your justice, loveand mercy abound. We thank You thisday for all that You have given us:

For Your Torah and all Yourcommandments… we thank You God… itis our beacon for salvation.

For ancestors who came before us andsacrificed for justice and our well being…we thank you God… their witness to Yourworks is our inheritance.

For our loved ones and friends whohave died and gone before us… we thankYou God… the warmth of their love abideswith us forever.

For our loving spouse… we thank YouGod… together we seek Your presence inour lives.

For the gift of our children… we thankYou God… they are Your precious gifts tous and to the future.

The respite from Chagim (festivals) that the monthof Cheshvan, coinciding with October and Novem-

ber, provides is usually a welcome one. It also pro-vides us the space to count our blessings and to trulyrealize all we have to be grateful for. Again, as everyyear, the holiday of Thanksgiving gives us a nationaland historical excuse to gather the family around afestive meal to give thanks for our personal and com-munal bounty. In the confines of Judaism, we havemany opportunities to do this throughout our calen-dar. But Thanksgiving is our American tradition forsomething we should instinctively do as Jews duringour numerous Festival, holiday, and Shabbat meals. At Thanksgiving, we can focus our giving of thanks forall those things that are truly American blessings: thebenefit of representation in our government, the free-dom to vote, the freedom of association, freedom ofspeech, and one that has eluded us in many otherlands, freedom of Religion.

The wisdom of our founding fathers to protect theright to worship, and yet ensure religion’s separation

by Michele Fischer, President

On Sunday morning I sat in on an adult educationclass at SOJC. The topic: The meaning of life.

After some discussion about what it means to live aJewish life and how God wishes us to proceed alongthe path of a Jewish life, I found the answer that reso-nated with me. To try to fulfill the 613 commandmentsand pay homage to my Jewish heritage, I must try tocomplete deeds of Tikun Olam, actions that will changeor improve the world. What a tall order for a simplewoman living in Orlando, Florida trying her best to jugglebeing a parent, wife, daughter, sister, and friend. I donot have a degree in medicine, law, or engineering.Just balancing my own checkbook can, at times, proveto be a major challenge. Trying to come up with ahealthy and satisfying dinner every day can be astruggle, and finding the time and patience to deal withsix children is a feat in itself. So I found myself asking, how can my deeds truly change the world?

After much thought I realized that if I pass on mylove for Jewish traditions, stories, and rituals to myfamily at home and at SOJC, I can in some small waychange my small corner of the world. I truly and deeplybelieve that my Judaism defines who I am and how Ilive my life. The commandments given to us fromGod give me a framework which helps me live my life,

and helps me make choices that better me as a per-son, better my family and better my community. Godhas graced us with free will to make our own choicesand allow us forge our own pathway along the road oflife. During that journey, Tikun Olam should be prac-ticed as often as possible. I hope that my work atSOJC will be a start to what I can do to help changethe world. I hope that through the efforts of the SOJCBoard and the membership at large we can strengthenour commitment to grow and live a fulfilling Jewishlife in Southwest Orlando, and leave a stronger com-munity for the next generation.

As SOJC begins its search for a new Rabbi, weembark on a new journey. The SOJC Board and theRabbi Search Committee are excited to be exploringthe limitless opportunities that SOJC has as we searchfor a new Rabbi, continue to work with Cantor DougRamsay, and expand our committees and programs forthe upcoming year.

Tikun Olam also includes the opportunities to docharitable deeds. The SOJC fundraising committeehas an opportunity, not only for our members, but,for friends and family across the country to partici-pate in a small piece of Tikum Olam and help SOJCrealize its full potential.

An eBay auction to benefit SOJC will begin on No-vember 14 and continue until November 21st. All pro-ceeds raised during this event will go towards the clergyfund. We are auctioning off some very special piecesof art created by Mike Weiner and Marvin Blatt. Boththese distinguished artists are members of SOJC! Wewill also be auctioning hotel stays at The Rosen ShingleCreek Resort, gift certificates to Darden restaurantsand to Café Tu Tu Tango, as well as a Magic Basketballsigned by the entire Magic 2009—2010 team!! A link tothe eBay site for each auction item will be availablethe day the auction begins on our SOJC website. Aletter will be sent to each SOJC family detailing theprocedure to open an eBay account (for those who donot yet have one) and a link to each of the auctionitems. We will also post them on our SOJC facebooksite. We ask that you share these links on your facebookpages, and email them to your closest family andfriends. The money raised will help SOJC grow stron-ger and best of all, you will each have the personalsatisfaction of performing an act of Tikum Olam.

Thank you for your continued support and allow-ing me to try to make the world a better place forourselves and our children.

For the gift of our families, loved onesand good friends… we thank You God…through them we see the reflection ofYour image.

For our jobs, our homes and all thatwe have… we thank you God… give usonly that which we need, as we seek YourKingdom.

For the bounty we are about to eat…we thank You God… and pray that wemay always see Your hand in ourfortune.

Blessed are You, Adonai our God,Master of the Universe, who has taught usthe wisdom that humility and gratitudeprovide… and let us say, Amen.

It was wonderful to have the school open during theHigh Holy days. Teaching about the holiday when

we are actually observing it has immeasurable advan-tages and the calendar allowed us the opportunity.Last month we had a wonderful time with Pizza in theHut, when every student, teaching assistant, andteacher performed the mitzvot of shaking the lulavand etrog in the six directions and dwelling in theSukkah for a meal of yummy pizza. The weather co-operated and the decorations were colorful! Theclasses were very proud of their artwork. Thank youso much to Eve Marsel and our wonderful PTA for ar-ranging for, paying for, and serving the yummy pizza!Thank you to the Men’s Club for once again erectingand disassembling the Sukkah in a timely fashion.
