“Mabel had a great love for the community and a great love for the hospital," said Pauline Leung, Mabel's daughter. This love came through in her dedication to her job and her commitment to improving patient care.

Mabel was forward thinking in her work. She was very much interested in pharmacy involvement in patient care. Under her leadership, the hospital was one of the first in the area to adopt automated medication dispensing technology.

She was ahead of her time with embracing the idea that physicians should work together with the pharmacy. Mabel mentored many of the physicians who went through the pharmacy.

Mabel also started the first antimicrobial steward program in the area—a coordinated program that promotes the appropriate use of antimicrobials (including antibiotics) to improve patient outcomes, reduce microbial resistance, and decrease the spread of infections caused by multidrug-resistant organisms. The program was so successful, it was adopted by other area hospitals.

During Mabel’s time at Glendale Memorial Hospital, she was known to be deeply dedicated to her work. Ben Yu, PharmD, former senior pharmacist, recalls Mabel spending long hours at the hospital and credits Mabel with helping him become a good pharmacist. He also recalls her legendary frugality. “Mabel was a good steward of the hospital’s resources,” said Ben. “She was very conscientious of the hospital’s money and spent it very judiciously as if it were her own money.”

Mabel was equally as generous. As a way to foster her relationship with the doctors, she purchased computers for the physician’s lounge. She also mentored a pharmacy clerk who wanted to attend pharmacy technician school, but could not afford it. Mabel paid for his education with money from her own pocket.

This incredible act of generosity was the genesis for the Mabel Leung Pharmacy Education Endowment with Glendale Memorial Health Foundation, established by the Leung Family upon her passing.

A committee made up of pharmacy and foundation staff select the recipients.

The scholarship program is open to all full-time hospital pharmacists and pharmacy techs. It provides opportunities to those who are currently enrolled in an accredited school of pharmacy, an accredited school fulfilling pharmacy prerequisites, or other pharmacy programs or seminars to advance medication use and pharmaceutical care.

Last year, the scholarship program was expanded to include a one-year membership to the Society of Hospital Pharmacists and registration to its annual seminar. Some of these education programs are very expensive and the scholarship program helps facilitate participation in these programs.

“All six of our clinical pharmacists have anticoagulation certifications,” said Pharmacy Director Leslie Pech, PharmD. “In addition, three of our clinical pharmacists have obtained antimicrobial stewardships through the scholarship program, and the other three are currently completing the training.”

The goal is to give pharmacy staff access to more education and programs. This enables them to widen their spheres of knowledge and influence, and to network with pharmacists from other facilities."

“These scholarships provide opportunities for our pharmacists to further their education and obtain certifications in areas they are interested in,” according to Leslie, who was the first clinical pharmacist hired by Mable. “Some of these programs are very expensive. The scholarships allow them to become more proficient with their skills. The overall benefit is better patient care through improved clinical knowledge base, and critical thinking skills.”

Pauline believes the scholarship is a fitting tribute to her mother's passion for learning. “For me, personally, it feels like we are continuing her intent,” she said. “It is a nice little legacy she started and it’s nice to hear that it is being continued and that there are other young pharmacists who are ambitious and inspired to further their education just like she was.”

Mabel Leung was born in 1935 in Shanghai, China. Her family left their homeland in the middle of the Chinese civil war, relocating to Hong Kong. Mabel had a great love of chemistry and was able to get her education in the UK, where she attended the University of London. She received her certification to be a chemist in the UK then returned to Hong Kong, where she met her future husband, Paul Leung. They moved to California, where she wanted to further her education to become a pharmacist. Mabel attended the USC School of Pharmacy and received her Doctor of Pharmacy in 1966. She joined Glendale Memorial Hospital as a staff pharmacist shortly thereafter, where she continued a 30-plus year career. At the time of her retirement in 2000, she led the pharmacy as its director.Legacy

Mabel Leung Continues to Inspire Through Pharmacy Scholarship

For 34 years, Mabel Leung, PharmD, served Dignity Health – Glendale Memorial Hospital and Health Center, first as a staff pharmacist and subsequently as the Director of Pharmacy for 11 years. Throughout her tenure at the hospital, Mabel served the hospital and its patients with professionalism, leadership and compassion. Although she passed away shortly following her retirement in 2000, Mabel’s love for learning continues on today through the Mabel Leung Pharmacy Education Endowment.

Current Pharmacy Staff Utilizes Mabel Leung Scholarship to Enhance Patient Care at Dignity Health - Glendale Memorial Hospital.

Mabel’s Legacy in Action

Hasmig has been with Glendale Memorial Hospital for the past 11 years. In her role as the pharmacy’s applications systems analyst, her responsibilities include auditing controlled medication usage, scheduling, serving as co-administrator of the Omnicell pharmacy automation system, and a host of other duties that support safe and efficient patient care.

Hasmig received the Mabel Leung scholarship in 2009 to help her earn her pharmacy technician license. Receiving this licensing has enabled Hasmig to expand her role in the department, including as Omnicell administrator, and was

helpful in many other aspects of her job as well.

Hasmig is grateful for the opportunities the scholarship offers, which has helped her get the education she needed to further her career.

Hasmig is aware that the additional training provided by the scholarship helps improve patient care at the hospital. “Patient safety is of foremost concern to the pharmacy department,” said Hasmig. “I know we are going to do our best and know what our mission is here: The patients and their safety come first.”

Tammy, a graduate of University of Pittsburgh’s pharmacy program, was the final pharmacist hired by Mabel Leung, prior to her retirement, 20 years ago. She was the first hospital pharmacist to receive her antimicrobial stewardship certification through the Mabel Leung Pharmacy Education Endowment. She has taken a lead in the pharmacy to ensure appropriate and cost-effective use of antibiotics for Glendale Memorial Hospital’s patients.

Tammy has also used the scholarship to complete her antimicrobial certification. She finds these

educational opportunities invaluable in her role as a clinical pharmacist, particularly in the area of anticoagulation therapy. This training has helped her understand in-depth the new medications available, how they work, and how they will be beneficial to a specific group of patients.

“I'm thankful Mabel gave us the opportunity and resources to help us keep our knowledge fresh,” said Tammy. “It is important for us to keep up-to-date in our field. This scholarship enables us to do so, and in turn, provide patients with the best care.”

Through the Mabel Leung Pharmacy Scholarship, Hasmik has earned her anticoagulant certification and is currently undergoing her antimicrobial stewardship certification training.

After completing her anticoagulation training, Hasmik has learned how to utilize these new anticoagulation therapies with better knowledge and understanding.

"This program has given me a deeper insight of how to incorporate these medications for our patients, as well as how to monitor and adjust the therapies," said Hasmik. "It was very educational

and beneficial for me to undergo this training and I apply it daily in my work."

Natalie has worked for the Pharmacy for the past 14 years, beginning as an administrative coordinator. Her experience in the department led to her desire to become a pharmacist. She returned to school with the encouragement of her director to earn her Doctor of Pharmacy degree. For the past year and a half, Natalie has worked in the role of clinical pharmacist.

Through the Mabel Leung Pharmacy Scholarship, Natalie earned her anticoagulant certification. She is now taking the antimicrobial stewardship certification training with the assistance of the scholarship. Natalie is particularly excited by the

antimicrobial training. She finds the education a great way to dive into the details and gives her more insight when working with physicians.

“The scholarship is an opportunity,” noted Natalie. “When we are able to utilize a program to give back to the same facility we came from, that’s a full circle. I use that knowledge every day. When I talk to the doctors. When I make a decision about what drugs to use on a patient. That is directly what I learned and what I applied. We only learn a certain amount in school, so this program means an opportunity to not just learn it further, but to reapply it to my work.”

Nicolette is the newest clinical pharmacist on staff, joining the hospital a year-and-a-half ago. She received her pharmacy degree from the USC School of Pharmacy. As a recipient of the Mabel Leung Pharmacy Scholarship, Nicolette has completed the anticoagulation certification program and is currently utilizing the scholarship to work on completing her antimicrobial stewardship program.

The scholarship program has been very valuable to Nicolette and she appreciates the opportunities her additional education has brought her. The additional training and

certifications she is obtaining allow her to expand her knowledge and her qualifications to affect improved patient care and outcomes.

“Our ultimate goal is to provide the best patient care,” said Nicolette, “and to make sure that we can get our patients to the best quality of life that they can."

Anna received her pharmacy degree from the USC School of Pharmacy. She has worked in the Glendale Memorial Pharmacy for the past 10 years. Anna has used the scholarship to complete the anticoagulation certification program and plans to pursue her antimicrobial stewardship certification, as well.

The anticoagulation program was extremely helpful to Anna, providing her with an extensive overview of newer oral anticoagulation agents and their place in current therapy practices and also comparing these new agents with

older established medications. She utilizes this knowledge in her current daily practices.

Anna is thankful for the opportunities provided by the scholarship, expanding the pharmacists' clinical background and broadening their pharmaceutical expertise.

"I enjoy providing care to patients using my pharmaceutical knowledge, making clinical interventions to ensure patients get optimal outcomes during their stay," said Anna, "and also interacting with nurses and doctors on a daily basis to provide excellent care to patients."

Anet has been part of the Glendale Memorial Pharmacy team for the past 10 years. She received her pharmacy degree from the USC School of Pharmacy.

Anet previously utilized the Mabel Leung Pharmacy Scholarship to earn her anticoagulant certification. She is currently undergoing the antimicrobial stewardship certification training with the aid of the scholarship, as well.

The training has been very useful to Anet, affording her the opportunity to get a formal education on latest guidelines. In addition,

the training enabled her to interact with other professionals in the same field, from different hospitals, and exchange different techniques and protocols, and learn how they handle anticoagulants in their facilities.

“I am very thankful Mabel gave us the opportunity and resources to keep our knowledge fresh,” said Anet. “This is such as fast-changing profession, it is very important to keep up-to-date with new information and medications that are out there.”

THE HELPING HANDS EMPLOYEE GIVING PROGRAM

is a fundraising effort by Glendale Memorial Health

Foundation in support of the programs and staff of Dignity Health – Glendale Memorial

Hospital. Employees can donate a variety of ways, such

as through payroll deduction or donation of PTO hours. Funds

raised go towards vital services and projects, from the latest

medical technology to the beautification of the hospital.

This program demonstrates that those closest to the

hospital — its employees — are deeply connected to making Glendale Memorial Hospital

even stronger for the benefit of all we serve.

“I have been with Glendale

Memorial Hospital for

20 years, so I consider the

hospital as my second home. Being with this organization this long, I

mostly know everyone in this facility. This organization and its staff has

been good to me and my family and I feel that giving back to my second

home is the least that I can do. Helping Hands is a great program

that gives back to the hospital.”

– Mario Magsaysay, RN, BSN

VALUES IN ACTION COLLABORATION:

Working together with people who support common values and vision to achieve shared goals

Jerry Meza Transporter

Jerry’s collaboration with the entire hospital is legendary. Never has

anything been asked of him that he did not immediately agree to, and always

with a smile. His leadership skills, keen judgment, and kind and caring support are relied upon on a daily basis. He goes above and beyond the call of duty by ensuring the delivery of our Adopt-a-Student gifts to the local elementary school, changes water bottles, and even opens stuck file cabinet drawers.

According to his nominator, “Jerry’s managers have always praised his work ethic, compassion, and superior performance. He truly is one of our best.”

Dignity Health, parent organization of Glendale Memorial Hospital, and Catholic Health Initiatives (CHI) are combining to create a new, nonprofit Catholic health system focused on creating healthier communities.

The new health system will:• Increase investment in critical areas to

advance quality of care and access;• Accelerate improvements in healthcare

delivery that promote the shift from sick-care to well-care;

• Expand access to outpatient and virtual care settings;

• Create a more personalized and efficient care experience through the use of digital technologies and innovations; and

• Continue building upon our shared healing ministry of providing quality healthcare for all people with compassion.

This combination will enable the new organization to expand access to outpatient and virtual care settings, share clinical advancements and provide the people and communities we serve with access to leading technologies, innovation, and the best and brightest caregivers in the U.S.

The new health system will include more than 700 care sites and 139 hospitals, offering communities access to quality care delivered by approximately 159,000 employees and more than 25,000 physicians and other advanced practice clinicians.

Dignity Health CEO Lloyd Dean and CHI CEO Kevin Lofton will both serve as co-CEOs, each with specific and independent responsibilities. Together, they will jointly oversee strategy and integration planning. Mr. Lofton will have authority for the mission, advocacy, sponsorship and governance, system partnerships, and information technology. Mr. Dean will have authority for all of operations, including clinical, financial, and human resources.

Their executive teams are working to plan a successful integration and anticipate the combination will be complete in the second half of 2018. At that time, they will announce the leadership team and a new parent organization name. However, existing facilities will continue operating under their current names.

The two organizations are geographically complementary and have no hospital service areas overlap. At this time, they do not anticipate closing facilities. The combined organization will establish its corporate headquarters in Chicago. This decision was made because Chicago is centrally located, has convenient access to all parts of the country where our ministries are located, and offers good infrastructure to support a national organization. All existing corporate offices will remain open and, longer term, the organization will develop a plan for all corporate office locations and support services that will support the future needs of the ministry.

Dignity Health and Catholic Health Initiatives to Combine to Form New Catholic Health System

Stronger together.

FAQIs one organization acquiring the other? No. The two organizations are combining to create a new Catholic, nonprofit health system. Neither organization is acquiring the other.

Will patients and residents be able to see the same doctors? We do not anticipate any disruption in service or access as a result of the combination.

Will my insurance still be accepted? How will this impact patient billing processes? Yes. If your insurance is accepted today, it should be accepted tomorrow. We do not anticipate any immediate changes with your insurance acceptance at our hospitals and facilities as a result of the combination. Our patient billing processes will remain the same for the foreseeable future.

Dignity Health has again been ranked among the top 10 high-performing healthcare fundraisers in North America by the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP). This is the second year in a row that Dignity Health has been honored with this distinction.

AHP recently recognized 52 U.S. and Canadian development organizations, primarily foundations affiliated with nonprofit hospitals or health systems, as high-performing for fiscal year 2015 as part of its 2016 Report on Giving.

The top 10 U.S.-based organizations included Dignity Health as well as Children's Hospital of Los Angeles; Seattle Children's Hospital Foundation;

Sutter Health; Miami Children's Health Foundation; Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center; Boston Medical Center; Hoag Hospital Foundation; UMass School of Medicine; and Medstar Health.

AHP's Report on Giving defines high performers as organizations that raise more net funds than 75 percent of all responding institutions. In FY 2015, the median amount raised by high performers was more than $11.9 million in the U.S. and $14.4 million in Canada.

Dignity Health has 31 foundations across its service areas in Arizona, California, and Nevada that provide essential fundraising support to assist in realizing its mission of providing compassionate, patient-centered care on an individual level.

With 1.5 million charities nationwide, competition for local philanthropic support is high. Last year Dignity Health Philanthropy collectively raised nearly $113 million to support areas including community outreach, general capital, mission services and research, among others.

Glendale Memorial Health Foundation formally rededicated a plaque in memory of Ardavast Karakashian, MD. Dr. Karakashian, a former Glendale Memorial physician, died in 1997 at the age of 38. “Our core value of dignity speaks to the importance of honoring and remembering,” said Wayne Herron, VP of Philanthropy. “This memorial plaque honors and remembers a very special man whose memory is still very present at the hospital today.”

The plaque, located on the hospital’s fifth floor, is a memorial from Dr. Karakashian’s daughter Patil, who was born at Glendale Memorial Hospital. A similar plaque previously hung in the hospital’s Emergency Department but was taken down during recent construction projects. The unveiling was attended by many friends and family members. “I am very humbled,” said Aram Karakashian, MD, Ardavast’s brother. “This is much more than I was expecting.”

Glendale Memorial Health Foundation held a dedication for Glendale Memorial Hospital’s new Tim and Louise Lewis Nature Wall on Thursday, November 30. The nature wall, located in the Dolores and Burton Payne Lobby, shows continuous scenes from nature to promote a calming and healing environment for patients, their families, and employees alike.

The wall was named in honor of Tim Lewis and his late wife, Louise, both long-time supporters of the hospital. Tim is a Foundation board member, while Louise was a former Foundation board member, board chair, and a dedicated hospital volunteer of 48 years prior to her passing in 2011.

EVENING OF WINE & ROSES

More than 400 guests gathered at the Langham Huntington Hotel, in Pasadena on October 8, 2017, to attend the 30th Annual Evening of Wine &

Roses “Cirque Fantastique.” The evening honored the life of Foundation Board Emeritus Eddie Johnston and was full of wildly entertaining music and cirque-

inspired acts including talented contortionist Sophie Das who ended the evening with a bow and arrow trick that held the audience spellbound.

This year’s fundraising gala raised more than $350,000 towards the “Humankindness In The Making” initiative which is a multi-year project that will renovate the hospital’s second floor with a focus on a new, state-of-the-

art GI Lab and expansion of the Wound Care Center. We would like to thank everyone who helped make the evening such a great success. This year’s gala

was chaired by Kathleen Dennis-Zarate, MD.
