MUSEUM EXHIBITIONSBE/LONGINGFebruary 18 - October 7, 2018

Through a series of commissioned artwork and a se-ries of community stories, this exhibition explores ex-periences of belonging, and longing to be at home in contemporary New Westminster. Be/Longing is the culmination of a series of year-long collaborative con-versations between the New Westminster Museum & Archives, New Westminster Arts Services, artists and the residents of our city. The focus of these conversa-tions was “home”, and the numerous meanings of the word. During Canada’s sesquicentennial, we wanted to know what people imagined, felt or dreamed of when they thought of home.

PEOPLE GOTTA MOVEJuly 5 - November 16, 2018

Crossroads of roads, rails and river, People Gotta Move is a new exhibition about transportation in New Westminster, developed in collaboration with the Van-couver LEGO Club.

Eight convenient and safe off-leash dog enclosures are located at:• Mercer & Duncan Streets • Carnarvon & Blackie Streets• Chilliwack & 10th Streets • Quayside Drive & Rialto Court• 7th Avenue & 22nd Street • Queen’s Park (large & small dog areas)• Hume Park• Moody Park Visit www.newwestcity.ca for details.

Cats are available for adoption at the Queen’s Park Petting Farm.

The safest place for your beloved feline is inside your home. Cats allowed to roam freely outside are at greater risk for injury, illness and their lifespan is shorter than indoor cats. Everything from cars to pred-ators to pest poison can harm a cat plus they are at a great risk to get lost.

Keeping Your Cats SafeYou can give your cat safe access to the outdoors, by walking them on a cat harness or building a screened-in enclosure. If your cat absolutely must be outside, then remember they must be spayed or neutered and have identification at all times (tattoo or microchip). It’s the bylaw!

How to Keep Your Indoor

Cat Happy & Healthy“Catify” their Home• Set up window perches inside & bird feeders outside for bird-watching• Install wall shelves or a large cat tree for climbing• Have several scratching posts so your cat can scratch appropriately• Place little pots of cat grass around the home for your cat to nibble on

Fun feedingStop free-feeding your cat (i.e. leaving a bowl of kibble out all day). Instead, hide kibble throughout the house so your cat has to find it or use a feeder toy that he has to work at to get it out.

ExercisePlay with your cat every day. Try different types of toys that allow your cat to stalk, chase, pounce and kick. Some toys are designed for the humans to join in and others are designed for the cat to play on their own. Even a paper bag can be lots of fun for a cat.

Get a friendIf your cat is social with other pets, you might consider adopting a second cat or even a dog as a playmate or companion.

IdentificationEven indoor cats can escape, so they should always have some type of ID - a name tag, a tattoo or a microchip.

Your cat will thank you for keeping them safe and sound!

A Bicycle TripFor TwoOn August 25, 1915, Charles E. Stride and

Robert J. Barr left New Westminster for a bicycle

trip to San Francisco. The purpose of the trip

was to visit the world’s fair, the Panama-Pacific

International Exposition. Charlie Stride, who

would later become one of New Westminster’s

preeminent photographers, kept a diary of

his trip. At various points along the journey,

Stride would have a local person sign his diary

entry. J. Lewis Sangster was the first person to

write his signature in the diary to witness the

start of the trip. Sangster, a future mayor of

New Westminster, had visited the fair on his

honeymoon earlier in the year. The diary records

the daily progress of the trip, the road conditions,

mechanical problems, and accommodations. The

two cyclists reached San Francisco on October

22nd. The bike trip was intended to go no farther,

but Stride decided to keep riding south. Stopping

along the way for five weeks to pick lemons, he

reached the American border with Mexico on

January 1, 1916.
