HOW TO USE THESE CARDS:

Discover the words together the first time through. Let the children share

what they notice about the pictures. Discuss features of the words, such

as double letters or "chunks" they recognize. Use each word in a sentence

and do a related body motion (see backs of cards for suggestions).

In subsequent "visits" to the words, the children may spend time alone just

looking and saying the words. Encourage them to use the motions suggested

on the backs of the cards or come up with their own.

Once the children have reviewed the words a few times, show them the

same words unstylized by turning the cards over to the plain printed side.

Set aside the words the children recognize on sight, and review the others

using the stylized sides again.

Motion: make "stop signs" with your hands, first right and then left as

you say, "Girls against boys."

Language: "AGAINST. In this tug of war, it is girls AGAINST boys."

Motion: float your hand horizontally as though clouds floating in the

sky.

Language: "ABOVE. We floated high ABOVE the soft clouds.”

Motion: do a thumbs up enthusiastically.

Language: "ABLE. Only one of the twins feels ABLE to tie her own

shoes."

Motion: pretend to carry a heavy stack of dishes from the table to the

kitchen.

BEHIND the tree."

brotherMotion: put your hand on your imaginary brother's shoulder while

pointing to the other brother.

Language: "BROTHER. He's our other BROTHER."

betweenMotion: point first to the right and then to the left.

Language: "BETWEEN. Here we are, stuck BETWEEN all the e's!”

darkMotion: squint your eyes as though trying to see into a dark cave.

Language: "DARK. Kristi says it is too DARK to go in the cave.”

Motion: pretend to shut a gate and nod your head.

Language: "CERTAIN. Tom said, 'Yes, I'm CERTAIN I locked the

cage.'”

insideMotion: pretend to hold your umbrella up as you peer into the door of

the tiny house.

Language: "INSIDE. Only 2 of us fit INSIDE the little house."

insteadMotion: flex your muscles.

Language: "INSTEAD. To get strong, you will eat broccoli INSTEAD

of donuts."

largeMotion: puff up your chest as though you are really large.

Language: "LARGE. Sarge is LARGE!”

lotMotion: stoop down and pretend to pick up a few rocks from the lot.

Language: "LOT. This LOT has LOTS of rocks on it!”

lessMotion: pretend to look at your own bowl, then at your friend's bowl,

happy that you have more.
