THE MISSION

of The Highland Foundation for Educational

Excellence is to acquire and distribute resources

to Highland Local Schools to enhance, enrich

and supplement learning opportunities for its

students, staff and community. We achieve

this by providing direct support for student

development, encouraging staff excellence

and creativity, promoting the school

district as a center for community learning,

and helping build a strong school partnership.

THe Highland Foundation for Educational Excellence is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization, supporting the Highland Local School District through philanthropy. THe Highland Foundation is a separate entity from the Highland Board of Education.

Dear Friends:

Thanks to you and the commitment you have to our school community, this past year has been another period of growth for The Highland Foundation. We have grown in the number of programs offered as well as the funding we received from our donors. From community enrichment programs to intercultural studies, from fine arts and literacy grants to scholarships awarded, we continue to help the students in the Highland Local Schools reach their full potential. We are creating the foundation needed to build a legacy of learners.

Our success in providing these programs and scholarships is due to a strong collaborative effort with all of our stakeholders: educators, school district staff and our tireless volunteers. Behind them is another constant: the generous donors from within our community. Thanks to your continued support, we are expanding the enrichment opportunities we can offer students and staff.

Over the past 17 years, you have helped The Highland Foundation strengthen our mission, deliver on what we promise — and more. I am proud to report that Foundation awarded grants and scholarships stand at nearly $115,000 this past year. Additionally, as a testament to the strong financial stewardship of your gifts and contributions over the years, assets surpassed the $1 million threshold. We achieved this milestone just afterthe close of the fiscal year.

I am pleased to share with you this report for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2019.

Marc Thomas, Chairman

Thanks to you... We are building a legacy of learners

China Trip

The Foundation underwrites a diverse mix of educational programsand experiences each year and focuses on six core areas of need. These

platforms help students advance on many levels, both in and out of the classroom. At the same time, these areas closely align to the interests of our generous donors.

The following pages outline the grants awarded duringthe 2018-19 fiscal year.

areas of impact

v Intercultural Studies v Literacy v Fine Arts v Community Enrichment v Special Education* v Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM)

HIGHLAND INTERCULTURAL PROGRAM ($13,000) In the past eight years, this program has brought over 280 students and staff from China, Spain and France to Highland and over 200 Highland students and staff have had the opportunity to study and travel abroad. Students continue to build relationships and learn from students in other countries. Funding helps to cover staff travel and includes host costs for meals, hotels for guest teachers and field trip entrance fees for guest students. This program allows students to explore the history, language and culture of other countries first-hand, both while in the classroom and visiting abroad. We also provide funding to assist Highland students who may need financial assistance with travel expenses.

intercultural studiesThis program has grown into a multi-year funding commitment. We believe strongly in expanding the educational boundaries for students to include a worldly approach to learning, which coincides with the district’s mission to provide future-oriented, educational programs that prepare students for college and beyond.*Special Education ~

THe Foundation has a strong history of supporting a wide range of learning modalities to strengthen and diversify the educational experiences for all Highland students. Although no grants wereawarded in the area of SpecialEducation in 2018-19, THe Foundation continues to seek donors and programming topromote inclusive education.

HHS Students Participate inthe Great Lakes Theatre Festival

literacyPopular reading programs and writing exercises encourage Highland students in many grade levels to grow their literacy skills.

GREAT LAKES THEATRE RESIDENCY ($8,500) This grant has been expanded and nowimpacts Highland High School students in grades 9, 10 and 12. Professionally trained Shakespearean artists help to inspirestudents, increase enthusiasm and bring complicated language alive in a way that makes students better readers overall. Duringthe residency in May 2019 and again in October 2019, students participated in acting, discussion and theatre exercises. Through the use of scripts, props and costumes, students transformed into their own acting troupe and explored the literary works of Shakespeare from an actor’s point of view.

ONE DISTRICT, ONE BOOK ($11,148) Now in its sixth year, this annual grant provides one book for all students in grades K-5 (approximately 1,355) and families to read together, stressing the importance of reading at home. ODOB provides excitement for students with a number of activities held at school. This year’s common book was: A Boy Called Bat by Elana K. Arnold. The program ran from January 28through the end of February 2019.

Children’s

Choir

Beo String Residency

The Highland Foundation has a long history of providing support for band, choir, orchestra, theater and all forms of the arts. Each year, grants are awarded directly to support these important educational experiences.

fine arts

BEO STRING QUARTET RESIDENCY ($5,500) The internationally-renowned Beo String Quartet returned for a follow up residency with the Highland School Orchestras to continue with concepts and techniques first introduced by the ensemble during their visit in the Spring of 2018. The quartet spent time with high school and middle school orchestra students in March 2019, running sectionals and large group rehearsals, and also presented performances to each group.

SANYUKA CHILDREN’S CHOIR ($5,700) Sanyuka Children’s Choir is comprised of orphaned and vulnerable children of Uganda, Africa, who are under the care of Sanyuka Children Ministries. This grant allowed for increased cultural awareness and the opportunity to discover first-hand the diversity of world music through the eyes of peer performers. The three-day intensive workshop held in October 2019 took Highland students beyond the music and deepened their understanding of culture, poverty, need, perseverance and joy of the Ugandan children.

Each year, these grants enhance Highland’s music program in several ways. The switchover instruments portion allows middle school students who have musical training to begin switching to instruments not used in the elementary grades. The band accompanist portion covers fees associated with having an accompanist work with students who are preparing for solo events. The band and orchestra instruments for 5th graders are also covered if the financial need arises.

Japanese Drumming

ERIC PATON JAPANESE DRUMMING RESIDENCY ($2,605)In November 2018, drummer Eric Paton visited

the students and staff of Sharon Elementary School and demonstrated the dynamic style of Japan’s Taiko

drumming. He infused excitement and interactioninto his residency and actively engaged students as they

explored the language, history and culture of music from around the world. The workshops were part of a

school-wide curriculum unit on Japan, which also included art, social studies and physical education.

AKRON STEEL DRUM BAND WORKSHOP ($10,120)

Members of the Akron University Steel Drum Band visited the Highland Schools in December 2018 and presented a music

workshop for all 3rd graders. Members of the band talked about the history of drumming, as well as the music and culture

of Trinidad and Tobago, performed several songs and invited students on stage to showcase their own musical talents! In

conjunction with the residency, each elementary school received a steel drum set to integrate into their musical education program.

ART HISTORY FOR A NEW GENERATION ($2,429) This grant allows for five large scale art history teaching displays at

Highland High School in 2019 so that all students have the opportunity to learn literacy references to famous artists such as Picasso and Dali. This

grant ultimately has an artistic, intercultural and literary impact on students.

ZACH WARREN ARTIST IN RESIDENCE ($3,500) – During his residency in May 2019, Zach met and rehearsed with the 8th Grade Band, Concert Band and Wind Ensembles and shared his experiences as a professional musician and music educator. He

also led trombone clinics for 6th-12th grade students and performed with the bands during an evening public concert.

JOE DENINZON ARTIST IN RESIDENCE ($4,500) – Mr. Deninzon’s visit was a follow up to his residency with the Highland Orchestra classes in 2016. During his May 2019 workshop, he talked about contemporary styles as they apply to

the bowed string instruments, with a specific focus on specialized rhythmic effects, as well as improvisation techniques.

College Readiness

Joseph Sojourner

10

This area of focus provides learning experiences that help students make positive life choices for their future and develop a community of inclusion. Grants are often used to bring in nationally recognized

programs and motivational speakers.

COLLEGE NOW GREATER CLEVELAND ($6,750) The Highland Foundation has funded this initiative for the past

seven years. The mission of College Now is to increase college attainment through college access and success advising, financial

aid counseling and scholarship services. On-site appointments are held at the high school for parents and students. During the 2018-

19 school year, College Now served 117 HHS students, aided in the completion of 181 FAFSA applications and offered 40

individual sessions.

communityenrichment

JOSEPH SOJOURNER ($4,000) Highland High School and Highland Middle School

welcomed Joseph Sojourner in January 2019. The 2019 school year theme at HHS was “The Power of US,” and it was the hope that high school students would work together throughout

the year to rely on each other, put differences aside, and foster positive relationships within the school community and beyond.

Sojourner’s message was a perfect fit for Highland, as his program was titled “Conflict Resolution (Deal With It: Arriving

at WE from YOU against ME).” Sojourner, originally from Akron, is a next generation leader and rap artist who

masterfully ties his story to life lessons providing both humor and authenticity. He was honest, engaging and inspiring.

Generous donors to The Foundation are helpingto develop tomorrow’s science, technology, engineering and mathematics leaders. Programs are regularly integrated into the curriculum by working closely with educators to enrich core lesson plans.

PROGRAMMING ROBOTICS LEGO EV3 MODULE ($3,630) Highland Middle School students now have access to programming, robotic and engineering equipment during class time thanks to this grant. The new space allows access to more hands on building and programming tasks and offers access to all the students, including those with special needs. Prior to this module being introduced in September 2019, students were learning coding and programming with their end product on a computer screen only -- not something they could physically move and build. The new LEGO EV3 module is a great resource that ultimately provides students the opportunity to further learn, explore and grow their interests in STEM-related fields.

FIT TOGETHER!

A special thank you to the friends and families who are helping to build a legacy of learners. Legacies include giftsof money and property and, just as important, the story of our lives, the values we tried to live by, the lessons we learned, what we started and hope others will continue. In December 2018, long-time area resident George Ayres

passed away, setting into motion the estate plan he made that generously provides four new college scholarships and funding for STEM and intercultural grants through THe Highland Foundation.

THe tragic deaths of 2002 Highland graduate Mike Kudla and Highland students Justin and Alyssa Haun also inspired friends and family to establish memorial scholarships that honor their character and determination.

Legacy giving offers a way to make a difference far beyond one’s lifetime.
