Interlake music lovers brave heat to enjoy Folk FestBy Justin Luschinski

Sizzling temperatures didn’t stop more than 70,000 music lovers from soaking up everything that Winnipeg Folk Festival has to offer last week.

The 45th annual festival, which took place July 5 to 8, saw a record-break-ing total number of 73,000 attendees, which was up 1,000 when compared to last year, to become the best at-tended four-day festival in its history, according to organizers.

This year marked Lockport resident Sara Crupi’s fi rst Folk Fest but she said it defi nitely won’t be her last.

“It’s so cool. It’s a different environ-ment than a show in Winnipeg, I love it. It’s so cool to be out here, meeting

people, and getting to experience Folk Fest,” Crupi said during the festival last Sunday. “I didn’t know what to expect, I came here with a lot of big ideas on how it would go, but over-all it’s exceeded my expectations for sure.”

Petersfi eld resident Nita Jackson said the last time she attended Folk Fest was four years ago but she was pleasantly surprised by some of the changes.

“A lot has changed since then. There’s way more food vendors, there’s the water towers, there’s like pop up vendors there, it’s a lot more organized,” Jackson said. “I remember when you had to plan your whole day,

make sure to pack enough water and stuff, but it’s a lot easier to manage now.”

Tom Winnichi, a long time Folk Fest attendee from Selkirk, said he’s always en-joyed the event.

“It’s always a great time, we have a lot of fun, but it’s also a massive show,” he said. “You don’t get to connect with a band in the same way you do at The Merch.”

Besides the heat outside, it was also a hot week-end on the festi-val’s main stage as Elle King and John Butler Trio+ kicked things off with high en-ergy last Thurs-day, indie-rockers Courtney Barnett and The Strum-bellas command-ed the stage last Friday, Folk Fest favourites Baha-

mas and A Tribe Called Red had the crowd up and dancing last Saturday night and hit makers Passenger and Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter Sheryl Crow capped off the festival on Sunday.

New to the festival this year was a 50/50 raffl e with all proceeds going towards ongoing site improvements.

The 46th edition of the Winnipeg Folk Fest will be held July 11-14, 2019.

Rockin’ on The Red returning to Half Moon July 13-14By Lindsey Enns

To help mark its 80th anniversary, Half Moon Drive In will once again play host to a free two-day celebration fi lled with music, food, fi reworks and family activities this weekend.

The sixth annual Rockin’ on The Red festival, in support of the Children’s Rehabilitation Foundation, will return to Lockport this Friday, July 13 and Saturday, July 14.

Wayne McIntosh, owner of Half Moon Drive In, said he started the event in honour of the restaurant’s 75th anniversary but decided to keep it going due to its success.

“In doing so I thought it would be re-ally cool to pull in a local, Manitoban charity,” McIntosh said. “I decided it would be really cool to work with (the Children’s Rehabilitation Founda-tion) because that’s a Manitoba foun-dation and I know whatever money raised will be given to a child within the region, which is what we’ve been focusing on.”

McIntosh said during the two-day event, funds raised through 50/50 ticket sales go towards purchasing a mobility bicycle for a family chosen by the foundation. He added the bi-cycle costs around $4,000 and it allows a child with mobility issues to enjoy riding a bike.

McIntosh said the annual event is also his way of giving back to their loyal customers as well as the Lock-port area.

“This is more about just giving back to the community, giving back to the region and giving back to all of my customers that have supported us over the years,” he said. “I really enjoy putting on this event.”

The restaurant reaching 80 years is also a milestone worth celebrating, he added.

“It’s a celebration like always,” he said, adding they are expecting thou-sands of visitors to check out the two-day event this weekend.

Last year their attendance was be-tween 5,000 and 7,000 over the course of two days, he said.

“It’s absolutely insane,” he said with a laugh. “It creates a big buzz in the town for two days.”

The two day festival will be fi lled with free activities including two nights of fi reworks, infl atable rides, magicians, face painters as well as a petting zoo.

The Steeltown Ford Main Stage con-cert series will kick off Friday, July 13 at 6:30 p.m. with the last act hitting the stage at 10:30 p.m. Activities will start up again at 1 p.m. on Saturday, July 14 with entertainment beginning at 6:30 p.m.

There will also be some local youth performing various acts throughout the two-day event.

Local Lions help Selkirk hospital purchase specialized wheelchairBy Justin Luschinski

The Selkirk Regional Health Centre will soon be equipped with a special-ized wheelchair that can better sup-port persons living with disabilities as well as provide more comfort to emergency room patients thanks to a generous donation from the Selkirk and District Lions Club.

Members of the local Lions Club do-nated $3,000 towards a Broda chair, a specialized wheelchair, last Tuesday morning.

Yvonne Oxer, Clinical Team Man-ager for the hospital’s emergency de-partment, says this chair will go a long way to helping their patients.

“With the aging population we are seeing an increasing number of el-derly patients being held in the emer-gency room for extended periods of

time. Having our own Broda chair means we can keep it in the ER and it will be readily accessible when we need it; the ER staff are very apprecia-tive of the Selkirk and District Lions Club generous donation,” Oxer stated in a release last week.

The Lions Club has been donating to the hospital for several years. They donated around $131,000 to help the hospital purchase an MRI. According to a statement provided by the hospi-tal, the chair was a high-priority item for the hospital, so when the Lions Club offered to donate money, the hospital suggested they put money towards that.

Pamela McCallum, executive direc-tor of the Interlake-Eastern Health Foundation, says donations towards new emergency equipment benefi ts

the entire com-munity.

“Every facility has a highest pri-ority list. When

donors ask what is needed at a par-ticular facility, we are quickly able to

match them with a greatest need. In turn, they are able to see their do-nation used quickly ... which makes them feel they’ve made a difference,” McCallum said.

According to the product website, the new Broda chair is a “unique ergo-nomic chair which will provide excep-tional comfort for emergency room patients, specifi cally allowing patients with disabilities to adjust pressure, support and airfl ow while receiving treatment.”

The Selkirk and District Lions Club meets every fi rst and third Monday of the month at 7 p.m. at 320 Christie Ave. in Selkirk.

Naturally formed channel connects Red River, Lake Winnipeg

By Lindsey Enns Boaters can now safely travel be-

tween the Red River and Lake Win-nipeg thanks to a naturally formed channel to the east.

Guy Beriault, the commodore of the Royal Manitoba Yacht Club located in West St. Paul, says the natural channel was identifi ed and then later marked by the Canadian Coast Guard last fall. He said the coast guard came across it while doing some surveying in the area.

“They’ve put in a whole new marker system, marker buoys current to the new regulations they have,” Beriault said while sitting inside the yacht club last Thursday. “It’s just great that we have this now.”

He added the channel is currently around six feet deep, which can ac-commodate most boats. The previous channel, which is near the new chan-nel, was only around two to three feet deep and it was just a matter of years before it would be impassable.

“Now with this channel being that deep it’s not going to drop ... it will always be accessible,” he said. “We always thought it was all rocks along this side. We never would have taken a chance to go through there. Now that it’s marked and everything else it’s perfect.”

The new channel is also welcome

news to the growing local yacht club.“We get quite a bit of traffi c down

from Gimli and Winnipeg Beach, we get boaters that come and spend some time with us and we travel up onto the lakes as much as we can,” he said. “Before a lot of people wouldn’t do it because it was too risky. But now with this open it opens up for pretty well anybody to navigate the waters and get up there.”

Beriault said they’ve heard from a couple of boaters who have used the channel and so far the feedback has been positive.

“They say it’s well marked and it’s accessible and the risk is gone,” he said, adding they are working on get-ting the word out that this channel ex-ists. “We’ve let everybody know here that this is accessible.”

Beriault said they hope this channel will allow more visitors to stop at the yacht club as well as continue to help grow their business.

The Royal Manitoba Yacht Club, lo-cated at 90 Kenabeek St. in West St. Paul, was established in 1955 by Mr. Gilbert Eaton and a circle of inspired boaters. In 1981, Queen Elizabeth des-ignated the Club “Royal.” Such desig-nations are permitted to only one club per town, city, or province, according to the club’s website.

Beriault, who has been with the club for 10 years, says its gone through many changes and upgrades through-out the years. The once private mem-bers club has been open to the public for around seven years.

The club currently has 45 members who dock their boats on the river, a number of others who store their

boats on the property as well as clubhouse mem-bers.

“We’re striving to let the public know that we’re here, it’s sort of a hidden gem,” Beriault said. “Our clientele is growing be-cause people are becom-ing more aware.”

He added they also have a restaurant, bar and pa-tio as well as a banquet facility that holds up to 70 people for special events and meetings on their park like setting.

Those interested in more information about the yacht club can visit royalmanitobayachtclub.com/home.html or call 204-334-0530.

RM of St. Andrews spending $10K to hire communications company By Justin Luschinski

The RM of St. Andrews is spend-ing $10,000 to hire a communications company in an effort to better com-municate with their residents.

The RM recently hired The Creative Bullpen, a strategic marketing and communications consulting com-pany run by Duncan Morrison, to handle communications for the RM from June 26 till Oct. 1, 2018. Morrison will handle communications for the RM regarding the south St. Andrews wastewater project as well as other initiatives such as a new meter reader program.

St. Andrews CAO Andrew Weremy says they’ve hired Creative Bullpen to better communicate with their resi-dents.

“We’ve heard the criticisms from the

public that we aren’t communicat-ing effectively, and we’ve hired (The Creative Bullpen) to help with that … Communications takes a concen-trated amount of time and focus, it’s not something that just anyone can do,” Weremy said. “(Morrison) knows how to communicate ideas to a di-verse group of readers.”

Weremy says the RM currently doesn’t have a designated staff posi-tion that directly handles public rela-tions or communications. He added hiring Creative Bullpen was a way to fi ll that need at a lower cost.

Creative Bullpen will focus on com-municating the RM’s new meter read-er initiative, offering suggestions on how to communicate the process to the public as well as to businesses and government entities.

But not all residents are in favour of the short-term hire.

St. Andrews resident Andrew Do-lenuk says he questions why the RM decided to hire Morrison with an mu-nicipal election looming.

“The (wastewater project) is almost fi nished, it was started two years ago, why are they hiring him now? What else are they going to announce from now till October?” Dolenuk said.

Dolenuk says he believes the RM hasn’t properly communicated in-formation surrounding the wastewa-ter project with residents. Dolenuk cites the lack of transparency around the cost of the wastewater project, as well as the RM being criticized for not properly looking into the Selkirk option, as examples of the RM trying to “shove this down our throats.” The

project has also faced criticism from several other residents, including St. Andrews Coun. Joy Sul, who wrote an objection to council accepting the 2018 fi nancial plan.

Dolenuk says he will be requesting a breakdown of costs associated with the hire of The Creative Bullpen from council at a later date.

Creative Bullpen specializes in com-munications for agriculture, industry and conservation, according to its website.

This will be the third time Morrison has worked with the RM of St. An-drews. He has also previously worked with the RM of West St. Paul.

CAA shares tips on how to beat the heat this summer

Submitted Hot weather means the beach is call-

ing and CAA Manitoba expects many drivers will hit the highway to Bird’s Hill, Gimli and other popular sandy destinations this weekend. To beat the heat and avoid a breakdown, drivers should make sure their vehicle bat-tery is in top condition.

“Many people don’t realize that heat can take a bigger toll on your car bat-tery than the chill of winter,” says Eri-ka Miller, public and media relations specialist for CAA Manitoba. “This summer, don’t get stuck in the drive-way or stranded on the highway when you should be out enjoying fun in the sun – get your battery tested, and re-placed if needed.”

When a battery is three to fi ve years old, it may hold less of a charge – so it’s time to have it tested. CAA Mani-toba offers free on-the-spot battery testing, delivery and installation in Winnipeg and Brandon for members.

Five simple road trip tips1. Check your tire pressure: Un-

derinfl ated tires can affect braking and handling, and make you more susceptible to a blowout. Top your tires up to the vehicle manufacturer-recommended tire pressure listed in your door jamb to drive more safely and increase your gas mileage.

2. Get a sense of driving conditions: check live road camera feeds from around the province at CAAMani-toba.com/roadcams to fi nd out if con-struction or collisions might impact your travel time.

3. Don’t leave your keys in the igni-tion. Idling your vehicle to keep the cabin cool is bad for your fuel con-sumption and the environment, and puts you at risk of a lockout or auto theft.

4. Ensure the emergency roadside kit in your car is customized and stocked with enough food and water, clothing, and fi rst-aid items for the number of passengers travelling with you.

5. Pack an entertainment kit for little passengers: a backpack fi lled with soft toys, books and games can keep kids occupied and reduce the amount of times they ask “Are we there yet?”

CAA members can request roadside assistance at caamanitoba.com, with the CAA app, or by calling 1-800-222-4357.

“MANY PEOPLE DON’T REALIZE THAT HEAT CAN TAKE A BIGGER TOLL ON YOUR CAR BATTERY THAN THE CHILL OF WINTER.”

Thanks for the minnow bait tipsHi folks. I am sure we can all remember a time

when we were swept away by the ex-cited joy of a young boy experiencing the success of something close to his heart. Such a lad’s heartwarming sto-ry came to me through his dad, Dan McDermid and my editor Lana Meier. This wonderful eight year old caught his fi rst fi sh and all he could think about was to be in the paper with it! Well, Liam McDermid, here is your wish come true! You’re in the paper now and your biggest fans, your dad, myself, along with all our fi shing com-munity applaud you on your wonder-ful catch. Shall we tell everyone how you caught that fi sh Liam? Why not, let’s do that! It seems you and dad went to Narcisse from home in Stone-wall to see the snake dens and later stopped at Norris Lake for a picnic. You decided to do a little fi shing off the dock and after a few casts thought your line got snagged. You worked your line every which way trying to free it and fi nally decided to give your rod a good tug. Then, wow, surprise, up from the water popped your jack-fi sh high into the air! You reeled in as fast as you could. You didn’t want it to get away! You shouted to dad and everyone else close by, “Look, I caught a fi sh!” Dad couldn’t believe you had caught one so soon! He rushed over to you and helped you hold the fi sh while your picture was taken. Thank you so much for sending us your pic-ture and story (with dads help) Liam, we so enjoyed it.

Last week I got myself over to the Winnipeg River where anglers go to catch minnows for themselves. The waters were churning causing the minnows to group in whirlpools where they could be netted. There I saw a very tall, thin fellow with light brown hair under an old cap. His face was weathered with a weeks, almost

blond, stubble growth. I walked up beside him as he bent over, his arms raised high working a rope attached to his net bringing up maybe two handfuls of minnows. He immediate-ly dropped them into a tub with salt in it. He stirred the minnows into the salt then put them into a large cooler full of ice. “As soon as I get home, they go into the freezer,” he stated. He raised himself up then, relaxed and smil-ing. “Hi, I’m Arnie Weidl, I write the fi shing column in Selkirk Record, the Express and the Stonewall Tribune,” I said to strike up a conversation. “Yes,” our towering friend replied, “I’m Lance Irwin from East Selkirk, I like your stories.” “Well, thank you,” I replied. I asked him why he went to all the trouble to catch his own min-nows since it would be cheaper to buy them. “I want minnow bait that holds

up when I cast out, so I make my own. You get them from the water then salt and freeze them right away!” he de-clared emphatically. He went on, “If you go to buy minnows and they look brownish instead of silver with a blue tinge, they weren’t frozen fast enough or kept cold enough.” We chatted some more about good minnow bait and as I left him, I shook his hand, perhaps for all of us. When a man gives you good tips about any aspect of fi shing; you thank him!

Closer to the end of last week I went visiting anglers along the Red. Again, the heat was burdensome but I had the good fortune to come across a father and daughter who were true outdoors people. Dad was a big, husky guy with massive arms and legs, light brown hair and a full, kind face. His daugh-ter, though tiny had an agile strength of body and demeanor. Her high fore-head, round cheeks, defi ned nose and ready wide smile was framed by her long fi ne brown hair. “Can I get your names?” I asked. “Yeah, I’m Shayne Smellie and that’s dad, Jake. We’re from Selkirk,” she said in a high, femi-nine, yet forceful voice. As we began getting to know each other it became evident that Shayne was a gifted an-gler. She told of a time when she and dad went up to Paint Lake south of Thompson and as so many other times they went fi shing, she was the only one that caught anything. Then nosey me asked Shayne, “If you have a boyfriend, is he an outdoors person?” “No,” she said, “He’s a city boy but I’m turning him into a country boy little by little!” We talked of fi nding deeper, colder water for early morning fi sh-ing then as I left them I thought of the fi shfl ys that were starting to show up. The fi sh gorge on them but that only lasts for a few days then I’m sure fi sh-ing will get better.

Hang in there gang, bye for now.

Gordon Howard Centre celebrates volunteers in Selkirk ParkBy Justin Luschinski

Gordon Howard Centre volunteers spend much of their time putting on fundraisers and events for Selkirk and area residents. But last Wednesday, they got the chance to relax and enjoy some great food in Selkirk Park during a spe-cial barbecue.

The gathering was held to congratu-late the volunteers for all of their hard work, some of whom have been work-ing at the centre for 20 years, including Lorna Mohlgren.

Mohlgren said the centre can help deal with the loneliness that often comes with old age.

“When you’re alone, you’re probably going to stay at home and do nothing. The loneliness is tough, you need to fi nd something useful to do,” Mohlgren said. “I lost my husband 22 years ago, and I needed something to do … I’ve made some amazing friends since then.”

Mohlgren doesn’t have any family in Selkirk, most live far away, either in a different town or even in a differ-ent province. She said that one of her fondest memories was when an elderly woman came to the centre because she had been scammed. Mohlgren helped calm the woman down, made sure she was emotionally stable, and helped her

contact victim services.Fran Domitruk, who has been volun-

teering with the center for nine years, said she’s just helped out whenever she can.

“I think I was born to be a volunteer, I’ve always done it. I’ve always volun-teered with different organizations be-cause I love people, I love doing some-thing for the community, I think it’s just a great thing to support,” Domitruk said.

The Gordon Howard Centre was cre-

ated by the Selkirk and District Se-niors Club, which was formed in the late 1970s. The club met in the Notre Dame Roman Catholic Church base-ment every Tuesday, but membership continued to expand, and they outgrew almost every other location they met at. The Gordon Howard Centre was creat-ed in 1980, and has since gone through many expansions and alterations over the years.

Bead artist among those taking part in All Members ShowBy Lindsey Enns

Nearly 40 artists from across Mani-toba have teamed up for another All Members Show at Selkirk’s Gwen Fox Gallery this month.

A total of 64 pieces by 39 artists is on display until the end of this month.

Among those with works of art on display is St. Andrews resident Cyn-thia Boehm.

Boehm, a Cree woman with Scot-tish ancestry, was born and raised in Norway House where she learned the

intricate art form of beading and de-signing moccasins. She then began making beaded moccasins as gifts for friends and family members and now she sells her designs and is starting to teach workshops in hopes of keeping this art form alive.

“My aunts did it, my grandmoth-ers, it was common,” she said. “I was always inspired and always wanted to learn.

“Now I just can’t stop. It’s addictive.” Boehm said this art form is a way of

connecting with her culture.

“I’m really proud to do it be-cause it connects me with my an-cestors and my culture,” she said.

After years of practice, work-shops and work-ing alongside el-ders, Boehm now

makes beaded moccasins, gaunt-lets, mittens, muk-luks and recently started creating colourful beaded art.

Boehm currently showcases and sells her designs with Manitobah Mukluks Story-boot Project on-line, at the Gwen Fox Gallery in Sel-kirk as well as at The Heard Muse-um Shop in Phoe-nix, Arizona.

She also re-cently won a sec-ond place ribbon during the 2018 Interlake Juried Art Show for her Traditional Bridal Moccasins, which are currently on display at the local art gallery during

this month’s All Members Show. Boehm says she plans to host a

beaded art workshop at the Gordon Howard Centre as well as at the Gwen Fox Gallery sometime this fall.

She added she credits being a mem-ber of the local art gallery with con-necting her to the community.

“This is a really great place to show-case your work,” she said.

An opening reception for this month’s All Members Show, which is open to the public, will take place on Thursday, July 12 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Mandatory testing lifted for cattle and bison producersBy Caitlyn Gowriluk

A requirement that breeding bison and cattle from Manitoba be tested for bovine tuberculosis before being exported to the U.S. was lifted by the United States Department of Agricul-ture (USDA) on July 1.

The development is welcome news for many farmers in Manitoba, said bison producer Len Epp, who has a farm in the RM of Rockwood.

“It just became a real nightmare for some of those producers,” said Epp. “To have this [requirement] gone has been a huge, huge benefi t.”

Since the testing requirement was lifted, many U.S.-based companies now feel safer importing bison and cattle from Manitoba, said Epp.

“They’re way more willing to import animals from us now,” said Epp. “It’s opened up a lot of options for produc-ers.”

While the last case of bovine tuber-culosis in Manitoba was in 2008, many producers — especially near the Rid-ing Mountain National Park area, where the disease had been detected in livestock and wildlife — were still required to take biosecurity measures

to prevent the spread of the disease, including using livestock guard dogs and barrier fencing to protect feed supplies, said a July 3 news release from Manitoba Beef Producers.

Herds in Manitoba were also subject to surveillance testing (a process that takes several days to complete and can be stressful for the animals, put-ting them at risk for injury or death), said Epp, whose herds were last tested for the disease close to 10 years ago.

“[The animals] just can’t handle the stress level,” said Epp. “They’d come through the system, walk out and we’d fi nd them dead. We found three dead in a pen about an hour later when we

went to move them. And it was all be-cause of stress.”

The testing process can also be dan-gerous for handlers, said Epp.

“Bison are not overly excited about being handled too many times,” said Epp. “It can get pretty dangerous, or just taxing, because you’re putting stress on the animals. And especially when you’re handling the big bulls, they can get pretty upset pretty fast. And the rodeo can start pretty quick.”

While the USDA testing require-ment has been lifted, some American states continue to have state-level bovine tuberculosis testing require-ments, said the news release.

Great Trail in Victoria Beach helps connect communities

By Justin Luschinski The Great Trail, a Canada wide multi-

use recreational trail, has opened up a new pathway in Victoria Beach.

A ribbon cutting event helped open this new section of the trail last Satur-day. This portion of the trail will allow local residents and visitors to explore local landmarks and experience the beauty of the region.

Morgan Isaac, the events co-ordina-tor for Saffi e’s General Store in Albert Beach, said this trail it’s a big win for the area.

“It’s a huge deal for us. It connects our communities together, people can come from across Canada and experi-ence the beautiful landmarks,” Isaac said. “It’s just a nice community here, it’s like a small town, but everyone here is really friendly, and we hope you stop by.”

Isaac said the Victoria and Albert beach area is very unique, and visitors will enjoy their time here. She hopes people check out the sand cliffs, as well as the unique biomass of the area, where it changes from beach to forest almost within a few meters.

Isaac said they’re also looking to promote a healthy lifestyle.

“We live in such a beautiful area, it’s a waste to not get out and enjoy it. There are so many cool paths to check

out,” Isaac said. The ribbon cutting event also held

miniature passports for purchase, which detailed landmarks in the area, came with a little notepad, and pro-vided a detailed map of the trail.

The Great Trail — also known as the Trans Canada Trail — celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2017 with its 24,000 kilometres of multi-use recre-ational trail now almost completely connected.

The Great Trail began in 1992 as part of Canada’s 125th anniversary cele-brations as a project which would bet-ter bridge the country together.

The Red River North Trail Associa-tion (RRNTA) was formed to develop a section of The Great Trail within Manitoba. They manage a trail which stretches from the north from Win-nipeg to Birds Hill Provincial Park, along the Floodway to cross the locks and dam at Lockport and north along River Road to Lower Fort Garry. It continues east through Selkirk to Tyndall and Beausejour before turn-ing north through the Mars Sandhills, Gull Lake, Beaconia, Grand Beach, Lester Beach and up to Traverse Bay. It then heads southeast through Power-view-Pine Falls to the Great Falls Dam before heading south.

Here are some of the judge’s recommendations from 2017 in the Landscape Category:

Continue to build on the Yard of the Week Program to encourage more residents to keep their yards neat, litter free and attractively landscaped. Continue to assess the interest in expanding community gardens, raised beds and/or in ground that could be adopted by those wishing to grow some vegetables for their use.The municipality and its community partners may want to consider enhancing gate-way/entrance treatments including welcoming signs. Many towns and cities have modest to significant landscaping and floral displays around welcome signs at one or more major entry points into the town or city. This could include public art and/or heritage designs.

BON hosts 2nd collaborative leadership meeting towards reconciliationSubmitted

Nearly 30 Indigenous and munici-pal leaders gathered together for the Collaborative Leadership Initiative to continue the historic process of recon-ciliation in Brokenhead Ojibway Na-tion recently.

Brought together through a part-nership between the Centre for In-digenous Environmental Resources (CIER), Southern Chiefs’ Organiza-tion (SCO) and the Winnipeg Metro-politan Region (WMR), Chiefs, may-ors and reeves from southern and central Manitoba met to continue the process of building relationships and creating the conditions necessary to resolve issues that have been barriers to collaborative action for more than a 150 years.

“We are coming together with open hearts and open minds to learn from one another and to fi nd a common understanding on how we can col-laborate to improve the livelihood of

our communities and citizens,” said Grand Chief Jerry Daniels from the SCO. “It is with the goal and commit-ment that we develop an approach and plan of action on how we can

move forward together.”Building on the outcomes and the

need for additional information iden-tifi ed at the successful March 2018 gathering, the elected leaders wel-

comed Canadian experts to provide detail and lead

discussions on various foundational topics from understanding of the In-dian Act and the Municipal Act, to the opportunities and limitations of the current tax system.

“Having access to up-to-date and detailed information provided by the experts, allows us a strong foundation to build relationships and partner-ships on,” said Reeve Frances Smee, co-chair of the Winnipeg Metropoli-tan Region, who took part in both gatherings. “This process has put us one step closer to resolving the tough issues that have been barriers to prog-ress in all of our communities.”

All leaders who took part in the second meeting of the Collaborative Leadership Initiative in late June be-lieve the time has come to take action and agree that by working together they have the power to move forward in leaps and bounds. They also agree this process and the anticipated posi-tive outcomes could provide a path for other jurisdictions across Canada to follow.

in livestock and wildlife – were still required to take biosecurity measures to prevent the spread of the disease, including using livestock guard dogs and barrier fencing to protect feed supplies, said a July 3 news release from Manitoba Beef Producers.

Herds in Manitoba were also subject to surveillance testing – a process that takes several days to complete, and can be stressful for the animals, put-ting them at risk for injury or death – said Epp, whose herds were last tested for the disease close to 10 years ago.

“[The animals] just can’t handle the stress level,” said Epp. “They’d come through the system, walk out, and we’d fi nd them dead.”

The testing process can also be dan-gerous for handlers, said Epp.

“Bison are not overly excited about being handled too many times,” said Epp.

While the USDA testing require-ment has been lifted, some American states continue to have state-level bovine tuberculosis testing require-ments, said the news release.

Selkirk FC dominates in MMSL victoryBy Brian Bowman

When Selkirk FC’s plays a strong possession game, they are very tough to beat.

Galacticos FC found that out the hard way on Monday evening at the Rec Complex.

Selkirk FC was very dominant in an impressive 7-1 victory in Manitoba Major Soccer League Division 2 ac-tion.

It was a great offensive outburst by the home side.

“We’ve been trying to change the way we play,” said Selkirk FC head coach Sean Leggett. “We’re trying to play a bit more of a possession game. I think it took them a little bit of time to understand the possession game and also possession with intent to ad-vance the ball and score goals.”

Selkirk FC totally dominated the fi rst half of the opening half, keeping the ball away from Galacticos FC.

That stellar ball control by Selkirk FC made a huge difference in the game.

“It really wears a team down,” Leggett said. “And the other team can’t score if you’re holding onto the ball. It’s whether you’re the chaser or being chased. When you have posses-sion of the ball, you make the ball do the work. If you don’t have posses-sion of the ball, you’re working hard to get it back.”

Tanner Markevich led the winners with three goals while Chris Szukie-wicz added a pair. Devin Racicot and Jordan Bruenig also tallied.

The win was a big one for Selkirk FC as they improved their record to

3-4-1 on the season. They now have 10 points to occupy sole possession of fi fth place in the nine-team division.

“It gets us away from the bottom of the table and now we’re middle to upper (in the division standings),” Leggett said. “It puts us within strik-ing distance to those at the top.”

Last Friday, Selkirk FC was blanked 2-0 by AC Fiorentina in Winnipeg.

Selkirk FC will have two more games

this month. They will host Dunvegan Castle on July 23 (7:30 p.m.) at the Rec Complex.

Selkirk FC will then battle Pescara at Shaughnessy Park in north Winnipeg on July 30 (9:30 p.m.).

Selkirk would love to end the month with a pair of victories.

“We want all points this month,” Leggett said. “That’s our goal.”

21U Women’s Invitational Baseball Tournament requesting sponsorship By Brian Bowman

In a little less than a month, Stonewall will be hosting the 21U Women’s Invitational Baseball Tournament.

So, host co-chair of the sponsorship committee for the tournament, Roger Langlais, has been busy trying to round up sponsorship for the elite tournament that will take place Aug. 9-12 at Quarry Park.

Teams competing will include Nova Scotia, Quebec, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Manitoba.

There will be a high-calibre of baseball played throughout the four-day tournament.

“Baseball Canada has been quite happy with the venue at Fines Field, and I think for us in Manitoba, it could be a stepping stone to host more national events,” said Langlais while in Montreal last week.

Langlais said Stonewall’s town council approved its Grand Slam sponsorship - a $5,000 cash contribution - and the use of the facilities.

Langlais noted Sunova Credit Union is a Home Run spon-sor - which is at the $2,500 level.

As of last week, the tournament co-chair was also in talks with other organizations about sponsorship.

“We’re talking to a number of businesses right now in the Stonewall, Selkirk, Winnipeg markets,” he said. “(Sponsor-ship) is huge. We’re hosting a national-level competition so there are a bunch of requirements and we want to do a good job for Manitoba and Stonewall and the teams and athletes from across Canada.”

Tournament games will be played in Stonewall while ath-letes will be staying at the Canalta Hotel in Selkirk.

This is the second consecutive year that Stonewall has hosted this prestigious tournament.

“It’s our second time in the rodeo,” Langlais said. “The fi rst time is learning and we felt we did a good job (last year). We had lots of feedback from all of the teams from across Canada, so there are areas that you want to maintain and then there are some areas you want to strengthen.”

Tournament organizers are hoping for great turnouts by spectators to watch the games.

“We defi nitely want to get more fans out to the park and we’re defi nitely trying to market that across Manitoba to other girls who play the sport,” Langlais said.

“Right now, we have about 1,500 girls playing in Manito-ba so we want to have those younger girls spectate these higher-level girls and women to try to aspire to that higher level.”

Any businesses or individuals that would like to help spon-sor the tournament can contact Roger Langlais via email at [email protected] or by phone at 204-268-5249.
