October 25, 2018T.K.’s Reflections

To Give Thanksgiving!

On the backside of my forearm is a tattoo that has instigated much conversation relating to the topic of God. People will stare at it for awhile, and then the bold ones will ask me what the word is. To most people, or maybe all, the word looks like gibberish. The word is “Tekatenonhwerátons.” Don’t worry if you can’t read it or say it, because it is of the Kanien’kéha (Mohawk) language, and loosely translated, means, “To give thanksgiving to the Creator.”

My paternal grandfather was half blooded Mohawk, my paternal grandmother was half blooded Abenaki, from the Sokoki Band (we are pretty sure she also had Pennacook blood, but we can’t prove it), and my maternal grandfather was half Miami. I guess you can say I’m a Native American mutt. Despite having blood of three nations, possibly four, my family claims to be Mohawk; yet, we are recognized by the Sokoki Band of the Abenaki. Confusing isn’t it. When I attend family reunions in New York and/or Vermont, my cousins always joke, “You’re just white enough to get away with it.” Oh! Well! We are all American. At least that is what all my grandparents taught me.

Anyway, my family has a strong Christian upbringing, my paternal side are Catholic, and my maternal side are protestant (various denominations). What is interesting is our Christian roots have been growing for an extremely long time. They are not recent. Grandpa would tell me stories of our ancestors that are not found in school history books (but can be verified). In school we learned how the Savages tortured and killed missionaries, etc. These stories are all true, but they are not all the stories. Grandpa told me how Chief Thayendanegea, or Joseph Brandt, after the Revolutionary War, built the first Catholic Church on the first Mohawk reservation; how Chief Hendrick Theyanoguin, half Mohawk and half Mohican, was a devout Anglican, and despite being a great Mohawk chief and warrior would share his faith devoutly (the symbol of his clan was the Christian cross); I knew who Saint Katerie Tekakwitha (the first and only Native American saint) was long before she was canonized as a saint. My grandfather told me of whole clans (families) who would only worship the “White Man’s” God, the true Creator. Tis truly sad that these stories are not shared in our history books alongside the others to show a true perspective, that all Indians are/were not blood thirsty warriors. Still, much of this was due to the early Catholic missionaries, and grandfather often talked of them with fond respect.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.- Psalm 100:4, NIV

Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise—the fruit of lips that openly profess his name.

Later in life, as I moved around the country, I learned stories from other Native American Nations of how God brought the Gospel to them. There are several that are similar, but one of my favorites is from the Nimiipuu (Nee-mee-poo), or Nez Perce Nation in Idaho and Oregon. (I served as a Pastor in Lapwai [lap-way] on the Nez Perce reservation in Idaho.) The story tells of how one of the warriors continuously had the same dream of a man of white skin, wearing funny clothing, and carrying something rectangle in his hands, and was from the direction of the rising sun. The warrior decided that the spirits were telling him to find this person. Therefore, he gathered some staples, got on his horse, and went on his quest. At the time, the Colonies were still relatively new. He traveled through enemy hunting grounds, lands that were unknown to the Nez Perce, but eventually arrived at a small town on the east coast. He saw many white people there and was scared, but went in anyway. He walked down the street and there on a corner of the street was the man in his dreams, holding what the warrior soon learned was a Bible. The warrior stayed and learned the language of the white man, learned the Gospel, and gave his heart to Christ. Eventually, he returned to his tribe and shared the Gospel with them. Before Lewis and Clark headed west, there were already Indian families and villages that were serving God.

So why am I sharing all this? I guess I am sharing it, because it is something I am thankful for. It is something that I am proud of. Despite the racism and hate against the Native American, I know that there are, and were many God loving Indians from my Native American roots. Despite the recent strong resurgence of the spiritualism on various reservations, and anti anything from the white man, I know there are still strong Christian roots in Native American culture. Christianity is not a “white man” thing anyway, and my ancestors such as Chief Joseph Brandt, Chief Hendrick Theyanoguin, Saint Katerie Tekakwitha, and many others recognized this. They recognized that the “white man’s” God was in reality the true Great Creator of everything, of the Nations of all men.

Along with many of these stories, my grandfather would also share scripture. I recall him quoting several such as Proverbs 10:3 that reads, “The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked,” and Philippians 4:19 that reads, “And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.” Granddad would say, “Taken from Water (the name he gave me), there is always something to thank God for. You have food. You have a place to sleep. You have a family. You have friends. There is always something to thank Him for. No matter how low life might seem at times, there is something to thank Him for. You don’t have to be rich to be thankful. God always provides, even when you don’t recognize it. Don’t forget to thank Him daily.”

Over the last several years the continued growth of the Native American protest against the Thanksgiving holiday greatly saddens me. Of course I know where their viewpoint stems from; yet, it saddens me that they are unable to see the truth. It saddens me that so many people, Native or not, are unable to see the truth. All being said, I am thankful for the opportunity to share the Gospel with those who are inquisitive about my tattoo.

So, I am thankful for having food to eat. I am thankful for a dry place to sleep. I am thankful for clothing that is clean and halfway decent. I am thankful for my health, the good and bad. I am thankful for lessons learned from my grandfather as well as lessons learned from life. I am thankful that I live in a nation that allows me to be who I truly am, and to serve God without hindrance. I am thankful for the opportunity to have served our nation by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. I am thankful for a family that loves me, and friends that put up with me. I am thankful for the Catholic Church and the communion of saints. I am thankful for The Creator’s grace, love, and forgiveness of sins. I am thankful for the opportunity and responsibility to share Christ’s Gospel with others. I am thankful for God’s provision to allow me to share material needs with others. I am thankful for onions, and I am thankful for my brothers of the Knights of Columbus.

What are you thankful for?
