With the growing concern for people's privacy it becomes increasingly more and more difficult to know if our parishioners are sick, in the hospital or even in Hospice care. The summer heat, the sound of children run-ning around, the smell of bbq on the grill, a family trip to the lake, a relaxing night of watching fireworks explode, Independence Day is a time to give thanks to God for the many blessings that have come upon our na-tion, especially to give thanks for our freedom. We also give thanks those men and women who have made great sacrifices on behalf of this great nation to protect those freedoms.

We pray that all people be united under God and stand up for true peace, true liberty, es-pecially for those who are discriminated, marginalized, persecuted and oppressed. Let us take the time to recognize all the men and women, especially those in the military, law enforcement, fire and rescue departments, and government officials who strive daily to protect this nation. May we as a nation put God back into every facet of our lives, and grow virtuous and prosperous in the areas that matter most in life, especially defending life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We also must never take for granted the freedom we have to practice our Catholic faith. We pray that our nation respect and protect this God-given right. Freedom comes at a high price and we should never forget and take for granted all those who have served and fallen for this country so we can celebrate days like today. May all the families of those who have had a lost one fall in the line of duty, be recognized for their heroic acts and may many blessings and consolations come upon their families to heal them of their sorrow and grief that has befallen them.

We also pray for all the countries that do not have the same freedoms as we do, those na-tions that experience religious and political turmoil, that true peace and justice may be established and flourish in their countries. May the people of those nations live in true peace, harmony, and charity under God.

May God bless America!

Independence Day is a time for us to stop and give thanks for our country, for democracy and for freedom. It is a time for us to remember all the people who sacrificed so much to preserve our democratic way of life. It is a time for us to remember that our freedom was born out of persecution and suffering. And it is a time for us to remember the great principles that grew out of that persecution and suffering. "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all [people] are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." As citizens of the United States of America, we have an obligation to uphold the rights our founders held so dear. We uphold these rights by ful-filling certain responsibilities: obeying the laws, paying our taxes, serving as witnesses when necessary, serving on juries and voting. And, in times of conflict, we are expected to defend our country.

Jesus reminds us in today's gospel, Luke 10:1-12,17-20, that in addition to our worldly citizenship, God calls us to citizenship in His kingdom. Our obligation as citizens of the kingdom of God is to put God at the center of our lives. Our responsibilities as citizens of the kingdom of God are to be willing workers, to deliver God's message of peace and to be visible signs of God's presence in our world. With God at the center of our lives, we can experi-ence the same nurture and comfort that graced the lives of the peo-ple of Judah in our first reading from Isaiah 66:10-14c. We too can rejoice, exalt and be glad because our "names are written in heaven" (Luke 10:20).

So, on this Independence Day, we should thank God for the gift of this country, for the gift of freedom and for the gift of democracy. We also should thank God for the gift of His Son Jesus Christ who sacrificed his life assuring that we can be citizens of God's king-dom.

God of all nations, Father of the human family,

we give you thanks for the freedom we exercise and the many blessings of democracy we enjoy

in these United States of America. We ask for your protection and guidance

For all who devote themselves to the common good, Working for justice and peace at home and around the world.

We lift up all our duly elected leaders and public servants, Those who will serve us as president, as legislators and judges,

And those in the military and law enforcement. Heal us from our differences and unite us, O Lord,

With a common purpose, dedication, and commitment To achieve liberty and justice in the years ahead for all people,

And especially those who are most vulnerable in our midst. Amen.

Reflexiones Sobre las Lecturas

Promesa de PazFue misión de los profetas denunciar los pecados pero también, y esto no debemos olvidarlo, educar en la esperanza. Si sus exhortaciones querían arrancar los vicios, empezando por la idolatría y la injusticia, sus promesas tenían como propósito sembrar el trigo bueno del amor y servicio a Dios y a los hermanos. La primera lectura nos presenta una de esas promesas en la imagen bella de Jerusalén, ciudad colmada de paz, de ternura, de protección y de alegría.

Dos puntos podemos destacar de esta hermosa imagen. Primero: los que se alegrarán son los mismos que por ella llevaron luto, de modo que la alegría de la que se nos habla es la alegría de la redención. No es el gozo superficial de un placer que pasa pronto sino la delicia de ver la fidelidad y el poder de Dios triunfando más allá de los pecados de la misma Jerusalén y más allá del odio de sus enemigos. No estamos ante un carnaval sino ante una liturgia, una fiesta de la fe que contempla la solidez de lo que le fue anunciado.

Segundo punto: la importancia del consuelo. Consolar es otorgar un bien sobreabundante que sana las heridas del mal. Hay en esto una especie de justicia. Experimentar el consuelo de Dios es propio de quienes han sufrido por sus intereses. La visión de la Jerusalén gozosa no es entonces un espectáculo bonito sino el desenlace de una fe que ha pasado por la humillación y que ahora se deleita al dejar atrás las horas tristes.

Misión ExitosaEl evangelio enlaza muy bien con las ideas que venimos exponiendo. Hay tres momentos en este texto de misión: primero, el envío; segun-do, la tarea de los misioneros; tercero, el balance gozoso de la tarea. Esos tres momentos sintetizan la vida misma de la Iglesia, primero enviada por el Resucitado; luego peregrina en esta tierra; finalmente, moradora de los cielos, precisamente con el nuevo nombre de Jerusalén. Así resulta que la visión del profeta Isaías tiene su con-sumación en lo anunciado por el evangelio.

Jesús envía a setenta y dos: este es un texto propio de Lucas, que es el único que nos cuenta de una misión a esta gran escala. El lenguaje del envío es directo y realista hasta la crudeza: Jesús habla de una cosecha para recoger pero también de tierra plagada de lobos; menciona expresamente las privaciones y la prisa del camino, propias de quien se dedica a su tarea y renuncia a todo lo demás; además, no olvida mencionar el caso del rechazo expreso que habrán de encontrar los que vayan en su nombre.

El contenido doctrinal de esta gran misión es notoriamente breve: "el Reino de Dios está cerca." Esto hay que decirlo a todos, a los que les interesa y lo reciben con gratitud, y a los que no les interesa y recha-zan a los enviados. Por otra parte, la misión no acaba ahí, pues es Jesús el que completará el sentido de esa frase que se dice a todos. Lucas, en efecto, nos indica que los setenta y dos fueron enviados a los lugares adonde él mismo pensaba ir. De modo que la proximidad del Reino se funde en realidad con la proximidad de la visita de Jesús. De aquí entendemos que donde Él está reina Dios.

Jesús habla de una cosecha. No los envía como sembradores sino como encargados de recoger la mies, que es "mucha." ¿Quiénes la sembraron? Hay un par de respuestas por lo menos. Puede entenderse que Cristo está aludiendo a aquello que sembraron los patriarcas y profetas, y en general todo lo que viene de lo que llamamos el Antiguo Testamento. O puede pensarse en que el estado del mundo es tal que se acerca el momento de "tocar fondo," y en esa situación crítica la oferta de la gracia es realmente la única esperanza ofrecida a los pueblos.

The Seniors Ministry is planning an outing to Helen, GA for Oktoberfest October 25-26. The bus will leave Holy Trinity at 8:30am on Tuesday. After free time for lunch, shopping, and checking into the Baymont by Wyndham, we will head over

to the Festhalle for dinner and music.On Tuesday we will go to historic Nacoochee Village where you can visit an antique shop, granary, enjoy lunch, and visit the Ha-bersham winery. We will return to Holy Trinity around 6pm on October 26. The cost of this trip is $200. ($270 for single room.) Please place your $100 deposit in the parish office box in the vesti-bule with your name, phone number, and email address. The balance is due by Friday, September 2.

Ministry Leader Needed for Homeless Shelter. On the 2nd Thursday of each month, November-March, (March 10, 2022) a dedicated group of Holy Trinity parishioners, including our LifeTeens!, prepares meals and serves 65-70 homeless men at the Central Presbyterian Church.

The Central Night Shelter is an all-volunteer ministry of hospitality and compassion to homeless men in downtown. It offers its guests a hot meal, a warm safe place to spend the night, showers, medical and foot care, and the fellowship of caring volunteers.

We would like to thank all of you for your love, support and prayers during our son, Bill's, illness and death. Thank you Fr. John for celebrating a beautiful and sacred Mass of the Resurrection. Thank you to the many CHRP Sisters who brought us so many meals.

Through the Summer Lunch Program last summer, Holy Trinity, partnering with Saint Gabriel and Saint Matthew Catholic Churches, made and distributed 10,468 meals and school supplies to the children and teens living in the Suburban Woods trailer park near Union City.
