Aubry’s Bright Spot

It's June, which means we've been open for almost a full year after being closed for nearly two years due to the COVID-19 pan-demic. We've been slowly and steadily building back up our hours, volunteers, programs, and other offerings. We are all so ex-cited to have the lounge open

again! It's been so lovely hearing the sounds of friends gathering over a good cup of coffee.

We also have a few new community partnerships that add a bit of extra fun to our activity list. A couple of exciting new art classes are getting started to allow our members to try something different and learn fun new skills.  Our membership and volunteer group are also contin-uing to grow. We are thankful and delighted for all those that have come back and the new folks that have joined! Thanks to everyone that has chosen us to be their center! We are honored to provide a space on Friday, June 17th, from 10-12 pm, for folks to gather and remember Cliff Bayuga. Cliff was previously on the PASC board of directors, leader of the computer center, and a long-time member. We invite you to join us as we share our favorite stories and memories with Cliff's Family and Friends. If you have questions or need any additional information, please feel free to reach out to me at [email protected] or 360.417.4554. Aubry Bright Senior & Community Center Manager

MASKS ARE OPTIONAL We will still have masks available for anyone that needs or wants one. *Certain service groups or programs may still require a mask to access services. We will provide additional information as we receive it.

A VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY “The Olympic Peninsula Rowing Association is trying to es-tablish a program to keep community-oriented rowing er-gometers in good working order, and they are looking for one or several mechanics. There are rowing ergometers in each local elementary, middle, and high school, and the club itself has several of them as well. Besides the maintenance on the ergometers, which is similar to bike maintenance, the pro-gram would help distribute them to the Boys and Girls Clubs in Port Angeles and Sequim in addition to the Rowing Club and schools. PASD SURVEY FOCUS GROUPS Dear Retirees and Senior Citizen Community Members, You are invited to help shape the future of students in Port Angeles! The Port Angeles School District completed a community-wide inclusive survey for all residents in the dis-trict regarding the strategic planning process and educational needs of students. This survey provided the community’s thoughts on public education in our city, and now we need your help. Having conversations with Focus Groups will be our next step as we continue to collect community feedback and input. Participation in the Focus Group helps our district learn more about your thoughts through the lens of our re-tired community members. The groups are facilitated by Ann Renker, PhD. and will last 1 hour. This Focus Group is on Friday, June 3rd at 11am, located at the Senior and Community Center (328 East 7th Street, Port Angeles, WA 98362). To attend via Zoom, you can log in using this link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/4535850108 If you cannot attend this Focus Group, please note there are other dates/times for Focus Groups that might better suit your schedule. You can review the other options here: www.-portangelesschools.org/news/strategic_planning_focus_-group We want to be inclusive in our options to provide feedback during the session and will provide the writing materials for the session. We will also have a digital response option, so please bring a Wi-Fi-connected device if this better meets your needs. We appreciate your consideration and look forward to seeing you soon! If you have any questions, please contact Jennie Wilson, the Assistant to the Superintendent: [email protected]. Thank you!

A “TAXING” SEASON INDEED!!! Holding our Port Angeles AARP Foundation Tax Aide pro-gram together during Covid has been very trying for all of us. We want to get back to our “in-person,” face-to-face, tax help on-site at the Senior Center and Library. Unfortunately, Covid challenges likely remain. Please re-member our trained Tax-Aide volunteers are seniors, too! And some of them were unable to be on site this year due to health, family, and personal issues. Volunteer and taxpayer safety is of the utmost importance, and we follow the rules of our national and state organization. That said, in 2022 our Tax Counselors e-filed just over 600 federal income tax returns in Port Angeles, provided as-sistance, answered questions, and worked with dozens of other taxpayers on various issues. Port Angeles Senior Center Volunteers at the front desk are INVALUABLE help to us in booking appointments. It is a difficult chore, and having a master calendar is so important. We want to thank the PASC Board and Staff for support of our program, giving us space and access. While the Library remains a terrific partner, too, it has not been able to let re-turn on-site there, so all 2021 and 2022 activity has been at the PASC. What next? We need new recruits!!! Like many volunteer organizations, there is turnover (death, illness, family de-mands, health, opportunities, etc.). Most of our volunteers are trained and IRS-certified to do tax returns. We need people with solid basic computer skills, detail-oriented, who will commit to the training, and give at least 4 hours a week time during tax season. But we also need volunteers to help with greeting, tech support, organi-zation, training, and even Spanish translators! Training will begin this fall. Apply at aarp.org/volunteer/programs/tax-aide/ Volunteers can be of any age. All materials are free. Much of the training is online and self-guided. Mentors are assigned to assist. Please pass the word to anyone you know who might be a recruit! Susan Fisher, Local Coordinator

CHARITY SEWING Thursdays, 10 am - Noon

Charity Sewing is for anyone who wants to make a contribu-tion to needy people, both locally and worldwide. In the past we have made lap quilts for disabled Vets and Little Dresses for the Philippines. There are many other possible charities that could use our donations, such as Project Linus and Operation Christmas Child, as well as hospitals, hospice programs, new mothers, care centers, homeless people, etc. Your ideas are welcome. You don't have to know how to sew to help make a difference. If you can cut, iron, match colors, or string ribbons and elas-tic, you can help. You may bring your own sewing machine, but it's not required. Please contact Connie if you are inter-ested or if you have ideas to share.
