Index > Company profiles > Delegation & contact >

Foreword It is our great pleasure to welcome you to our trade mission to California, dedicated to the themes of Urban Mobility and Life Sciences & Health. This mission is being held in parallel to the economic working visit by His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima.

One-third of the Netherlands’ wealth is earned beyond our borders. The Dutch government is proud of our business community and its capacity for innovation. This mission to California comes at a crucial time, when we are facing major challenges and good transatlantic relations are essential to the Netherlands’ security and prosperity. Now, more than ever, we must join forces and use our gift for innovation to face these challenges. California is the largest US state by population and the fifth-largest economy in the world. This means that California is full of economic opportunities for Dutch companies and knowledge institutions in areas like climate, sustainable mobility, healthcare, and startups and scale-ups.

This mission is a way of showcasing Dutch companies’ strengths in the areas of Urban Mobility and Life Sciences & Health.

It is an honour to lead this trade mission in the presence of the Their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, Dutch Minister of Education, Culture and Science Robbert Dijkgraaf, and Aruban Minister of Economic Affairs, Communications and Sustainable Development Geoffrey Wever.

We will do our utmost to secure new knowledge, insights, contacts and real trade opportunities, and we wish you an inspiring and successful mission.

It’s exciting to lead the first large-scale Dutch economic mission to the United States since the start of the pandemic. Together with 100+ companies from the Life Sciences & Health and Urban Mobility sectors we will visit San Francisco and Los Angeles in the presence of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Máxima and other high-level participants including Liesje Schreinemacher, Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, Ernst Kuipers, Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport and Vivianne Heijnen, Minister for the Environment.

The strong economic ties between the US and the Netherlands supports 825,000 American jobs. The Netherlands is the 4th largest foreign investor in the United States and a top 10 destination for US Foreign Direct Investment. The US is our most important trading partner outside of the EU.

Our nations share an innovative entrepreneurial spirit, which has allowed us to become important trading partners. This excellent partnership creates jobs, sound investments, and promising opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic. During this economic mission it is the top priority to seek new opportunities and expand existing collaborations between our businesses and learn and share each other’s expertise and ambition.

Innovations driven by Dutch SMEs provide unique opportunities for US stakeholders and California is especially keen to learn more about promising solutions from the Netherlands. That’s one of many reasons why I look forward to meeting all of you, to contributing to future collaborations and to traveling with you as your leader of the business delegation.

The US and the Netherlands Addressing societal challenges together

The economic ties between the United States and the Netherlands are strong. In fact, the US is the most important non-European partner for the Netherlands. Exports and investments between the two countries have been steady. However, strong bilateral relations cannot be taken for granted. It is therefore important to continue investing in them.

Shared cultureThe United States and the Netherlands have had bilateral relations and historical ties for many years. We share more than four hundred years of common history, during which we have both learned to value tolerance and respect for freedom. Our partnership is based on these common values and our shared ideas around peace and security, prosperity and sustainable economic growth. We also reciprocate an appreciation for each other’s art, culture and knowledge. Five million Americans are of Dutch descent – of which around one million reside in California.

Shared challengesThe Netherlands and the United States face similar challenges in providing accessible, affordable and quality care for all and sustainable urban mobility solutions as a result of population growth, rapid urbanization and climate change. We both look at advancing our respective sectors by seeking out international partnerships.

Particularly with California, the Netherlands has longstanding intensive cooperation on environmental and climate issues. Our countries are both frontrunners in the field of climate policy. We are similarly very progressive in terms of sustainability and uphold strict environmental requirements. Together with rapid urbanization and population growth, these factors have proven to be a driving force for innovation and experimentation in both of our territories. We are eager to extend this collaboration and work together on addressing societal and urban challenges together, particularly in the fields of Life Science and Health, and sustainable mobility.

Optimizing healthcare for allThere are several leading LSH clusters present in California with whom Dutch stakeholders are eager to engage. The San Francisco Bay Area is home to the dominant players in the field of robotic surgery and wearable medical technology. In addition, the region is a world leader in innovations in the field of artificial intelligence and its cross-sector applications. At the same time, the US faces major societal challenges in providing accessible, affordable and quality care to all socio-economic classes, which has only been exacerbated by the COVID pandemic. The rapid emergence of remote care is accelerating the digitization of care. The Netherlands can provide US companies with new insights on digital solutions for these challengesAs one of the world’s top investors in healthcare, the Dutch Life Science & Health sector holds a strong global position. We rank high in benchmark studies for our world renowned health system, infrastructure, and the prioritization of sports.

We are excited to share knowledge and expertise in the field of Life Sciences and Health. Through international collaboration, we can integrate scientific research and education to the many healthcare systems in place, and in term deliver excellent care at every step of the patient’s journey.

Driving sustainable urban mobilityCalifornia has also been on the forefront in advancing sustainable and smart (urban) mobility in an effort to ensure transportation is safe, sustainable, affordable and accessible.

During COP26, California and the Netherlands, as initiators, signed an MoU on cleaner freight transport. The Netherlands and California are both dedicated to the Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV) Alliance and in the Transport Decarbonization Alliance (TDA), with California taking over the TDA chairmanship from NL in 2021.

Cities like San Francisco have already been implementing Dutch innovations in their transportation systems, taking inspiration and knowledge from the Netherlands’ sophisticated and efficient bicycle infrastructure.

Through modeling consultancy on the use of various transportation modalities to spatial planning, the Netherlands can support California in developing mobility as a service (MaaS) for its inhabitants, to further develop zero-emission technologies and reach local sustainability goalsThe Netherlands is strongly committed to achieving international climate agreements and building resilient societies, but we know we can’t do it alone. International collaboration and strong partnerships are key in moving to a more sustainable future. Let’s work together on addressing societal challenges.

Marc Buise, MD PhD, is a consultant in Anesthesia and Critical Care Medicine. He is working in the Catharina Hospital Eindhoven and Maastricht University Medical Center. He is the initiator of the digital ICU journal: Post-ICU (www.Post-ICU.com). Besides the direct positive benefits for patients and family, Post-ICU also gives the opportunity for long term follow up and to do research on Post-ICU Syndrome (PICS). Better knowledge of PICS will help to improve the quality of life after ICU admission and survival. Post-ICU has won several awards, among them are the Dutch Healthcare Innovation Award and the Anna Reynvaan nurse award. Post-ICU is already in use in over 20 Dutch hospitals. Currently US partner hospitals such as Griffin Health and Vanderbilt University Medical Center are being connected. The digital journal has been developed together with Games for Health. Dytter

We are Dytter: the booking platform for healthcare that connects healthcare organizations and healthcare providers. Thanks to our smart technology, it’s a matter of logging in, searching and booking. Care organizations get access to screened care providers and the care providers decide where and when they want to work. The platform does the rest. We’ve cut out the paperwork, intermediaries and expensive office buildings, which keeps costs down and care affordable.

Dytter can be used to efficiently schedule your own care workers and to hire external care providers. This way, care organizations not only get the most out of their own staff, but also respond to peak moments with extra care providers. For example, if you suddenly need someone tomorrow morning because of a sick call or if you need someone who can assist for a longer period.

Arranging care like running errands. When founder André Piso came up with Dytter a few years ago, his dream was to make care more affordable, faster and smarter. And we are growing fast. Countless care organizations and thousands of care providers have joined us in the Netherlands, and since 2021 also in Germany and Norway. Our ultimate dream? An app in which people can book their own care. Immediately, without fuss and for a fair price.

Founda HealthBuilding tomorrow’s healthcare ecosystem

Within the current decade, we are heading towards a global shortage of 18 million healthcare professionals. Simultaneously, every professional is wasting 30% of their time due to inefficiencies in the current system. We’re headed towards an unsustainable global healthcare system. The solution improves organizational efficiency thereby driving growth and financial profitability. Built on modern healthcare standards such as FHIR, the platform is cloud-based, zero-trust and moves data efficiently across non-standardized interfaces without storing any of it. Established in 2019 in the Netherlands, Europe’s most connected startup hub, the Founda team has previously built and successfully exited global platform solutions in Fintech and Healthtech, and is bringing the lessons they learned to build tomorrow’s healthcare ecosystem. The company is looking to engage with healthcare providers, payers, digital health solutions and other key decision makers within US healthcare.

Omnigen

Omnigen was founded in 2015 and focused on applying bioinformatics and computational biology for the good and improvement of human health and quality of life. We do this by developing clinical diagnostic tools and products for use in, for example, oncology.

One of our products is a Decision Support System (DSS) which can analyse pancreatic cancer patients in a non-invasive way (with a saliva sample) called PITA (Pancreatic Insightful Treatment Analysis).

The standard of care for pancreatic cancer is treatment with the chemotherapy FOLFIRINOX, known to be non-effective in 45,3% of the patients. Thus, patients are treated (and suffering) without the desired clinical effects but with the societal costs of 60.000 EUR per patient.

PITA can identify responders and non-responders of FOLFIRINOX before the start of the treatment with accuracy, specificity and precision of >98%. Thereby enabling personalised treatment plans, reducing unnecessary societal healthcare costs, and, more importantly, reducing patient suffering due to ineffective treatment and the known severe adverse side effects associated with chemotherapy.

This enables oncologists and patients to make a well-informed choice on whether or not to treat with FOLFIRINOX, choose alternative chemotherapy or go for palliative treatment with a good quality of (remaining) life.

Synergie Advanced Patient Support

At Synergie we understand the kind of support surface that is needed to optimize the treatment of wounds as well as to prevent complications. To avoid uncertainties which could increase the risk of mortality or extend the treatment period unnecessarily.

We also recognize what is needed for patient rehabilitation after an accident or during long-term care. That is why we have createdAir-Fluidized Care.

A patient is kept floating on a mass of tiny glass beads which are ventilated at low pressure by a conditioned airflow. The principle is to create perfect envelopment of any individual body shape and redistribute the weight evenly, resulting in extremely low interface pressure.

Air-Fluidized Care (also known as Air-Fluidized Therapy/AFT) is an optimal healing environment that supports patients with conversion of tissue caused by burns, bedsores, ulcers and other exuding wounds as well as patients that require rest in a stable, clean environment.

After conducting extensive clinical trials throughout Europe and in The United States, the devices are registered by the FDA. Currently the devices of UV Smart are used in 19 different countries across the globe, and as of Sept-2022 the devices will belaunched in the US market. Next to NYU Langone, we are currently looking for additional potential customers, testing sites, and distribution partners.

Ballast Nedam Development

Imagine regenerative urban developments as the best medicine of the world.A discipline which prevents diseases, stimulates new way of more sustainable and healthy mobility. We see ourselves as the ambassador of showing the world that wellbeing and prosperity can be hand in hand with a sustainable world. That is where Ballast Nedam Development is after. Developing appealing living and working environments in urban areas – places where people like to be and where they feel at ease. Places that add value to the society. With every project, we are mindful of our impact – on the immediate surroundings, on the world and on the future. We are a Dutch urban developer with an international focus. Our projects push boundaries, literally – we get our expertise and inspiration from both the Netherlands and beyond – and figuratively: we feel each project should be better than the last. Innovations never stay new for long with us – by the next project they’ve already become the standard. We are creating CO2 positive urban developments and buildings, buildings that create more energy than they use, restore the biodiversity, are built of natural materials, and adding lifetime to the people who live there.

This lets us get a head start on the future – a future that’s healthy and habitable for everyone.

Bike Mobility Services (BMS)

Bike Mobility Services (BMS) aims to develop sustainable, active and affordable bike mobility services for employers and their employees. We offer fully digitized services and collaborate with bike dealers and other service partners. We are part of Pon Bike and already serve more than 40,000 companies and 300,000 employees in Europe.

Models that we offer focus on a hassle-free experience for employers enabling them to stimulate active mobility and lower barriers for employees to start riding a bike. Here you can think of the option to provide a bike lease-to-own model through which an employee can obtain their favorite ride by split payment while getting full service and insurance as part of the package. This model allows employees to use the bike however they like (even for private purposes) and to keep it at the end of the lease! You may also think of a shared set of bikes on premise of the employer, to be used by any employee. Are you interested in reducing CO2 emissions, stimulating an active lifestyle and happy employees? bike.box

Bike.box is a Dutch startup that develops innovative and design driven bicycle parking solutions. The collection ranges from our fully automated tower and tunnel systems to the smart pedal.clip system.

The bike tower and tunnel use a patented technique where each bike is parked in its private box. The box is automatically transported through the parking system.

The key advantages of using a box are: • Storing extra items like helmets, coats, bags;• Reduces risk of malfunction dramatically due to the

use of a box, instead of transporting the bike itself through an automated system, which is known for failure issues.

The tower can be outfitted with a second function, like a bicycle repair shop, coffee shop, public toilets, parcel pickup point ect.

The patented pedal.clip parking system is a revolutionary new way to park any type of bike.

The innovative design uses the pedal to park the bike, that means wheel sizes do not matter, nor will wheels be damaged anymore in possible parking accidents. The product design offers interesting possibilities, like integrating of E-bike charging and locking options. Another nice feature is the ability to customize them in colors or even apply artworks on them.

We are looking for partners to setup a joint venture of bike.box US.

ColVitro

ColVitro was founded by Dutch entrepreneurs. The basic idea of ColVitro is that we need to think differently about the re-use of increasingly scarce raw materials in our economies. ColVitro makes a positive contribution to this challenge through the efficient reuse of existing glass waste flows.

ColVitro supplies sustainable recycled colored glass aggregate. That sounds sharp, but it isn’t! ColVitro products are made from non-recyclable glass waste material. The glass material is colored all around with natural pigments.

Our Products are the solution for durable and high-quality top layers on roads and buildings. The colored glass aggregate is sprinkled or sprayed with a bio-based binding resin. When applied, ColVitro offers a colored designation system with non-slip and consistent color distribution. Suitable for various surfaces – such as asphalt, concrete, plastic and wood. ColVitro gives color and friendliness to roads and façades. ColVitro gives extra safety to bicycle paths and industrial floors, through distinctive use of color.ColVitro has wide application possibilities due to its unique properties:• Glass, but not sharp• All RAL colors possible• Colorfast for years• UV resistant• Various surfaces possible• Fast processing possible• Water-based product

ElaadNL

ElaadNL researches and tests the smart and sustainable charging of electric vehicles. Owned by the Dutch gridoperators, ElaadNL is their knowledge and innovation centre in the field of (smart) charging infrastructure in the Netherlands.

ElaadNL coordinates the connections of public charging stations to the electricity grid and has been working from the beginning to adapt the grid connection demands to make these more fitting to charge points. Innovative solutions are explored that will generate great benefits for society. Optimal use can be made of the existing grid by ‘smart charging’, requiring fewer expensive investments of the electricity grid. ElaadNL also enables market parties to benefit from the potential flexibility that an EV can provide to match the demand from EVs from the intermittent (non-controllable) sustainable supply/generation.

In the recently opened, state-of-the-art Testlab in Arnhem, new models and innovations in the field of charging electric vehicles are tested and the interaction with the underlying power grid is researched.Producers of electric cars, buses, trucks and other forms of electric mobility and of all matching charging infrastructure and ICT communication services are welcome in the open test lab. This improves products and services to enable a smooth transition to smart and sustainable charging of electric vehicles.

Apart from testing, ElaadNL is involved in many ‘practical’ deployments such as bi-directional charging (V2G), cyber security and interoperability of charging. ElaadNL developed the de-facto global standard for connecting different charge stations, the Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP).

In addition to mobile units, Keepsure offers permanent lockers, with optional refrigeration, that contribute to strategic location management as an added service to public transport (mobility hubs) and parcel delivery systems.

These products contribute to improving urban development, safety, and enable local and regional governments to achieve their mobility goals, such as reduction of city congestion and optimization of the public space.

A new patented product will be launched soon. This is a locker system with integrated smoke detection and an extinguishing system. The cutting-edge technology enables safe storage and charging of batteries, without the risk of theft. This product is particularly aimed at the growing e-bike market.

Desired contacts: (public) transportation agencies, smart mobility partners and organization/partners of LA28.

Sorama

Sorama is a deep-tech scale-up from the Brainport region in Eindhoven, the Netherlands, specialized in enabling and creating valuable insights from sound measurements. Their ground-breaking acoustic cameras are globally used within OEM and R&D acoustic design departments, noise reduction, smart cities, smart stadiums and industrial inspection.

Unknown to many people, noise pollution is nearly as damaging as air pollution. The WHO states that in Europe 1.6 million healthy life years are lost each year because of it.

The first step in solving noise-related problems is to identify where the pollution is coming from, and which source is most severe. Current monitoring solutions are less equipped to find the cause of the problem, since they are only limited to indicate the level of noise. Because of these limitations, relevant information is lost.

Sorama has introduced the next generation acoustic monitoring for cities: the Sorama L642 platform. This solution delivers all capabilities of the traditional environmental sound level meters, and more.

This unique sensor platform is built to create insights into where, when and how noise is created. The on-board software and AI can even trigger anomalies and classify specific sounds. Live sound events can be projected over a map using the Sorama SoundSurfaceTM. The Sorama L642 is a future-proof scalable platform, allowing easy integration of new features and capabilities.

To be able to solve a problem, Insight is needed, at Sorama we make Sound Insightful.
