Banco De Oro Unibank Inc. (BDO), originally known as AcmeSavings Bank, was acquired by the SM Group in 1976. Makati Medical Center is a tertiary hospital in thePhilippines with more than 600 beds. The hospital was founded onMay 31, 1969. It is one of the hospitals owned and operated byMedical Doctors Inc., a subsidiary of Metro Pacific InvestmentsCorporation.

Since opening its doors, Makati Medical Center, orMakatiMed, has been the birthplace of many dramatic firsts inmedical history in the Philippines, in Asia, and the world.

One well-known case is the surgery of the Clemenia twins,who were born conjoined at the hip in a rare congenital anomalyknown as Tetrapus Ischiopagus. Dr. Raul G. Fores immediatelyapproved their transfer to MakatiMed's pediatric nursery, wherethey were raised by the pediatric staff until they were ready tobe operated on.

The MakatiMed team took nine months of preparation,planning, and mock exercises before the actual operation tookplace. In May 1998, pediatricians, plastic surgeons, pediatricsurgeons, urologists, orthopedic surgeons, anesthesiologists,nurses, and operating room attendants spent 17 hours in theoperating room. They emerged with the country’s first successfulsurgical separation of conjoined Tetrapus Ischiopagus twins.

JCI Accreditation and AHMA

In 2011, MakatiMed became the first and only Philippinehealth institution to be certified with the 4th edition JointCommission International accreditation and the 4th hospital inthe country to be accredited.

Joint Commission International (JCI) is the internationalarm of The Joint Commission, and has been working with healthorganizations, ministries of health, and global organizations inover 80 countries since 1994. JCI’s focus is on improving thesafety of patient care through the provision of accreditation andcertification services, as well as advisory and educationalservices aimed at helping organizations implement practical andsustainable solutions.

Also in 2011, Asian Hospital Management Awards (AHMA)honored MakatiMed with “A Decade of Achievement” special award.This special recognition was given to the top three hospitals whowon the most Asian Hospital Management Awards in the 10 years ofHMA. MakatiMed is the only hospital in the Philippines give nthis recognition.

Strategic Hospital Alliance Program

MakatiMed launched the Strategic Hospital Alliance Program,or SHAP, in July 2010. The program is geared toward expanding andsharing MakatiMed’s services to the rest of the country byestablishing partnerships with hospitals located in other citiesand the provinces.

Under this program, MakatiMed’s partner hospitals may referpatients to MakatiMed in order for them to access facilities andservices that their local hospitals cannot or do not yet provide.These hospitals can also gain access to diagnostic equipment andtools that would otherwise require substantial investments.

As of September 2012, MakatiMed has 65 hospital partners all overthe country.

Romualdez Memorial School, inmemory of the mother of Mrs. Imelda Romualdez-Marcos, the firstlady of the Philippines during that time.
