2 NAISMITH MEMORIAL BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME

January 13, 2022

On behalf of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Springfield College, we welcome you, whether you are here in person or watching virtually, to the prestigious 2022 Spalding Hoophall Classic presented by Eastbay at the Springfield College Blake Arena being held January 13-17, 2022. This year we celebrate the 20th Hoophall Classic that over time has featured many of today’s elite NBA players.

We are excited about hosting our first Hoophall Classic since the pandemic began in the spring of 2020. At the same time, we are appropriately cautious. We remain vigilant with our COVID-19 protocols to ensure the health and safety of all community members. As we continue to learn how to live with the realities of COVID-19, the Hall of Fame and Springfield College have worked together to establish protocols that are consistent with CDC and local health guidelines. We appreciate your compliance with those protocols.

This year, 45 teams from 18 states across the country will participate in what is widely known as the top high school basketball event in the United States. National and international web, media, and television audiences will be able to follow along with the excitement in real time.

In 1891, James Naismith invented the game of “basket ball” while he was a graduate student and instructor, thus earning Springfield College the Birthplace of Basketball moniker. Innovation and scholarship in the fields of wellness and athletics continue to be hallmarks of a Springfield College education.

Located in the Pioneer Valley on the shores of the picturesque Connecticut River, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame is a fitting shrine to the game Dr. Naismith invented and a showcase for almost 300 inductees with more than 40,000 square feet of basketball history.

Throughout the decades, the Basketball Hall of Fame and Springfield College have built a dynamic partnership, each bringing with them deep and historical connections to the game of basketball. This tournament is just one of the tangible results of this relationship.

We thank the City of Springfield, our host, as the sports world’s attention is turned to the Hoophall Classic at this most fitting site – where the game was invented in this very city and this very college - 130 years ago.

Sincerely,

Mary-Beth Cooper

Hoophall Classic20 Th anniversary

2022 SPALDING HOOPHALL CLASSIC presented by eastbay 11

BY GARRETT COTE @GARRETT_COTE

Basketball history is all over the city of Springfield. Whether mozying your way over to the Hall of Fame or driving through the campus of Springfield College, where Dr. James Naismith invented the now worldwide sport of basketball by hanging up the first peach basket, you can feel the history.

The same goes for James Naismith Court inside Blake Arena on Alden Street. The history is felt.

For 19 years, the best basketball talent across the United States of America has migrated to the birthplace of the sport for the most prolific high school showcase in the world, the Hoophall Classic presented by Eastbay.

“The Hoophall is a perfect storm of basketball history,” John Doleva, CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame, said. “Having it played at Springfield College, having the Hall of Fame right here in Springfield and the fact that each of the teams get a chance to go through and have a tour of the Hall of Fame is a great moment for everyone involved.”

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the event, and Blake Arena will yet again be filled to its 2,000-seat capacity.

As each fan squeezes shoulder-to-shoulder into the bleachers, they quickly forget the cramped seating arrangements and turn their focus to the dazzling skills of these future NBA stars.

“[Blake Arena] draws a feeling of the Hoosiers,” Doleva said. “The beautiful setup of it allows the crowd to come in there and make it feel like it’s rocking and rolling. It’s really difficult to duplicate anywhere else.”

The last 11 No. 1 overall NBA draft picks have all competed in the Hoophall Classic, which is traditionally held on Martin Luther King Jr. weekend at Springfield College.

This year’s slate of games certainly won’t disappoint either. Fifteen of the top 20 ESPN 100 players will participate, including Dereck Lively (No. 2, Westtown School, Duke), Keyonte George (No. 3, IMG Academy, Baylor) and Dariq Whitehead (No. 5, Montverde Academy, Duke).

“People think about the Hall of Fame being a museum, implying that it only looks back at history,” Doleva said. “But what we’ve done over the past several years is try to become relevant in today’s game.

“Rather than just chronicling basketball history, we want to be involved in the present. Our staff has done a wonderful job of doing that by putting us front and center in the Hoophall Classic where we have seen so many Division I players and number one draft choices.”

Personally, I have experienced that history – past and present – first-hand. I can vividly recall my excitement as December approached. Not because of Christmas or the New Year, but because the schedule for the HoopHall Classic would be released. My grandfather and I would study over it and pick out the must see players and games every year.

Some years would provide the sunniest of weather. Other years we would have to drive well below the speed limit during blustery blizzard conditions. Regardless, the normal hour-long car ride from Northfield, Mass. always felt like a cross-country road trip as my anticipation built with every exit sign passed.

12 NAISMITH MEMORIAL BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME

The 2016 Hoophall Classic in particular will be in my memory bank forever.

Bentonville High School, led by the high-flying Kentucky commit, Malik Monk, matched up with St. Anthony (NJ), which was coached by the legendary Bob Hurley Sr. Hurley’s swarming defense bottled up Monk for most of the contest. In the fourth quarter, he exploded for two spectacular jaw-dropping jams -- one being a backboard-shaking tomahawk dunk from a step inside the free throw line on a fast break -- that left everyone watching, including me and my grandfather, stunned.

That was the first and only time I saw Hurley coach, as St. Anthony closed for good the following year. It was truly a work of art watching him orchestrate his team.

That same day, Jayson Tatum and Chaminade Prep (MO) battled Markelle Fultz and DeMatha Catholic (MD) in an overtime thriller. Tatum poured in 40 points, convincing the crowd he was sure to be a lock to make it to The League, while Fultz casually racked up a 20-point double-double. Following short stints in college, they were both drafted in the top three of the 2017 NBA Draft.

With coaching legends like Mike Krzyzewski, John Calipari and Roy Williams looking on, big-name players such as Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, DeMarcus Cousins, Michael Beasley, Lonzo and LaMelo Ball and Zion Williamson have all showcased their skills at Hoophall.

Even LeBron James couldn’t resist stopping by. In 2020, LeBron watched his son, Bronny, and Sierra Canyon (CA) face off against Paul VI (VA) ahead of his matchup later that evening against the Boston Celtics at the TD Garden.

It’s moments like these as a fan that will stick with me my entire life. Watching my favorite sport be masterfully executed by these illustrious players and coaches, alongside the man who introduced me to basketball, my grandfather, is one of the countless reasons this tournament is so special.

The Hoophall Classic has provided priceless memories for basketball aficionados over the past two decades. And after a one-year break in 2021 due to COVID-19, those memories -- in whatever fashion -- will be revived, revisited and restored once more this year.

Kyle Filipowski

2022 SPALDING HOOPHALL CLASSIC presented by eastbay 15

BY COLLIN ATWOOD @COLLINATWOOD17

On Aug. 11, 2021, Kyle Filipowski was named to the 2021 USA Basketball 3x3 Under-18 World Cup team. Filipowski, along with Keyonte George, Eric Dailey Jr. and Gradey Dick, traveled to Debrecen, Hungary to face-off against the best young basketball players in the world.

The six-foot-eleven power forward was honored to wear “USA” across his chest as he and his teammates breezed through the tournament, undefeated, to win the gold medal.

Coming next fall, Filipowski, also known as “Flip,” will sport the colors blue and white again, but instead his jersey will read “DUKE” after signing his National Letter of Intent (NLI) with the Blue Devils this past November.

He expects to bring nothing less than his gold-standard level of play to

“The Brotherhood.”

Filipowski, who is from New York, currently plays at Wilbraham and Monson Academy (WMA) in Massachusetts. He is in the midst of his senior season following an abbreviated 2020-21 campaign due to the Coronavirus.

Filipowski was the first person to give his commitment to the Blue Devils and coach Jon Scheyer, who will take over as head coach next season following the retirement of Mike Krzyzewski.

WMA has a history of getting forwards to commit to a blue-blood program. In 2016 Wenyen Gabriel signed his NLI with Kentucky and became a Wildcat. After two years at Kentucky, Gabriel went undrafted and signed with the Sacramento Kings. He is currently playing in the NBA G League.

Flip received offers from several top schools in the country including the University of Kentucky, Ohio State University and the University of North Carolina. Despite all of the attention, Flip’s choice was simple.

“Duke had no cons for me. [They’re] the best of both worlds, academic wise and athletically,” he explained. “Coach Scheyer and I, we’re on the same wavelength with the vision of Duke during his time coaching next year and into the future.”

There is only one downfall of joining the Blue Devils and it comes on a personal level for Filipowski.

For the first time, Flip and his twin brother Matthew, who recently committed to Harvard University, will be playing on seperate basketball teams upon their collegiate careers.

“It’s going to be a weird feeling not playing beside my brother anymore, but we got each other where we needed to be for college,” Filipowski said.

When you’re nearly seven feet tall, 220 pounds and are unrealistically talented at basketball, growing up with a mirror image of yourself seems like an unfair advantage. Through countless one-on-one games and practices, the brothers were able to assist one another in developing their skill sets.

“Neither of us would be the type of players we are without the other one,” Filipowski said. “We’re very fortunate to have each other growing up.”

Those practices, along with his hardwork and dedication, are what led to Flip being ranked at No. 10 on ESPN’s Recruiting Database.

16 NAISMITH MEMORIAL BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME

He started to receive more recognition when he transferred from Fordham Prep to WMA. Under the direction of coach Mike Mannix, Filipowski was able to make that jump in his game towards being a great player.

“Coach Mannix put me in a great opportunity to be successful on the court along with my teammates,” Flip said.

That opportunity did not get wasted as Filipowski and the Titans went on to win the 2019-20 NEPSAC-AA (New England Preparatory School Athletic Council) Championship. Now that WMA is off to a hot start, Filipowski wants to get back to that champion status after missing the chance last year.

With an experienced team and a versatile player who can defend any position and shoot from behind the arc in Filipowski, the Titans might find their way back to the championship game.

However, it isn’t time for the NEPSAC Tournament, but Wilbraham and Monson Academy has already punched their ticket into the 2022 Hoophall Classic at the Birthplace of Basketball this January.

Filipowski and the Titans made the short trip to Springfield College two years ago and he was able to showcase his talents on one of the biggest high school stages in the world before he truly mastered his game.

“I really have not seen an atmosphere like that in high school basketball before,” he said.

Not only will Flip be able to show his improvement and how talented he is, but he will also get the chance to reunite with his teammates from the FIBA World Cup in Hungary. George, Dailey Jr. and Dick (all ranked in the top 25 of ESPN’s Recruiting Database) will be

participating at HoopHall this year.

“It’s going to be a nice little reunion,” Flip said, “I know there’s still going to be a lot of love there.”

The undeniable talent that these athletes possess played a huge role in their success in the tournament, but defending the gold medal would have been impossible without the chemistry these four built.

“We all get along together very well too and I think that’s what made us win the gold medal,” Filipowski said.

At such a young age, Filipowski has already played on the biggest stages of the world at the high school level and he has not disappointed. He’s not afraid of the attention and shines brightest when people are watching.

“To be honest, I just know that’s where I belong; the bigger game, the biggest stage, the spotlight and things like that.”

The spotlight is exactly where Filipowski will be when he suits up for the 2022-23 season; flipping from a Titan to a Blue Devil.

Montverde Academy

2022 SPALDING HOOPHALL CLASSIC presented by eastbay 19

BY JOE ARRUDA @JOEARRUDA9

Montverde Academy came into the 2020 Spalding Hoophall Classic as the team to beat. Favored to win the GEICO nationals and make its case as one of the best high school basketball teams ever, the Eagles made history as the first program to produce four first-round NBA draft picks in the same class.

Highlighted by the 2021 No. 1 overall draft pick Cade Cunningham (Detroit Pistons), Scottie Barnes (Toronto Raptors), Day’Ron Sharpe (Phoenix Suns before being traded to the Brooklyn Nets during the draft) and Moses Moody (Golden State Warriors), the team finished the regular season at 25-0. The Eagles looked forward to the challenge of the national playoffs, but never got the chance to test themselves in that environment because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Head coach Kevin Boyle doesn’t remember where he was when the GEICO nationals were canceled, but he does know his team was the consensus champion at No.1 in the polls.

“I don’t really think there was unfinished business,” Boyle said, referring to his 2019-20 team. “I think they finished their business. They played the best schedule, they played all of the best teams, there was nobody left for them to play that they hadn’t played.

“We would’ve liked to play one more tournament. But, you know, we think we were clearly the best team.”

Boyle, who was named MaxPreps’ coach of the decade in the 2010s, has coached future NBA talent virtually every year of his lengthy, 30-plus year career (11th season with Montverde). Current NBA stars other than the likes of Cunningham and Barnes have developed under him

including Kyrie Irving, D’Angelo Russell, Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid – the list goes on.

The COVID-19 pandemic posed a new threat to the perennial top school in the country, but the program repeated as national champions in 2021 when it finished 24-1.

The 2020-21 national championship squad was stacked; highlighted by projected 2022 lottery pick Jalen Duren, projected first-rounder Caleb Houstan (who rounded out the 2020 Hoophall Classic starting five), one of the best point guards in college basketball right now in Creighton’s Ryan Nembhard and Baylor’s Langston Love.

Montverde’s current roster boasts six players ranked in the ESPN Top 25 for the class of 2022: Dariq Whitehead (No. 5), Vincent Iwuchukwu (No. 11), Skyy Clark (No. 16), Dillon Mitchell (No. 18), Malik Reneau (No. 23) and Jalen Hood-Schifino (No. 24).

The pandemic didn’t hinder Boyle’s recruiting – if one wanted to call it that. Boyle and his staff in Montverde, Florida, have built a reputation that recruits itself. Rather than pitching to the nation’s top athletes, Boyle is often on the receiving end of talented fastballs.

“It’s really not how people think of attracting players. The vast majority of guys are almost all reaching out to us either directly or through travel teams,” Boyle said.

“They look at some of our players’ past success and the team’s past success, and they say, ‘Well, Montverde has a really good track record of players developing, they seem like they have a really good culture. They play hard and almost all of their players are excelling in

20 NAISMITH MEMORIAL BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME

college, internationally and in the NBA immediately.’”

Boyle had never seen Sharpe, Cunningham or Moody play before they arrived on campus. For Barnes – who has been an NBA starter since arriving with the Toronto Raptors – the recruiting process was a phone call that lasted less than two minutes.

“That’s how simple it was,” Boyle said.

A year later Barnes was starring at Florida State and a year after that, Boyle was at the Barclays Center watching him get drafted No. 4 overall.

“Coach Boyle, he talks about the NBA a lot and he doesn’t sugar coat anything and he doesn’t tell us how good we are, he always keeps it real with us,” Cunningham told Danny Priest of The Basketball Times in 2020. “He constantly reminds us of big time players in high school that we don’t know where they’re at right now. Just having that in our ear all the time, I think it’s helped me a lot and it’s made me want to work harder.”

As of Dec. 27, 2021, Montverde is ranked No. 2 in ESPN’s Top 25. With a roster that includes commits to blue-blood programs like Duke, Kentucky and Indiana, as well as other top schools in USC and Florida, the Eagles could be set up for a three-peat as national champions.

But Boyle knows as long as his dynasty has lasted, it could fall at any moment.

“We’ve been fortunate that we won six of the last nine national championships and we’ve had the team of the decade, the player of the decade and they named me the coach of the decade. We’ve had a lot of stuff that we’ve accomplished, but to us it’s like nobody cares. Now it’s a new decade. Can we win the next decade

now? Well, we’ve got to win the next game. My thought is, if we don’t win this year, we have a lot of new guys to follow. We might not win next year, it might be a long time before we win,” Boyle said.

“I don’t want to stop because when it stops, there’s no guarantee. So you want to stay sharp, you don’t want to give up the edge and you want to coach the next day. And if you start looking too far ahead or counting your success stories or media clippings, you’re gonna find yourself quickly at the end. And you should be at the end if you’re taking time thinking about those things.”

While his tenure has resulted in a list of accolades and accomplishments too long to enumerate, Boyle has his sights set on the immediate future, with no rear-view mirror.

“I just like coaching basketball and everybody likes recognition – it’s nice, but I don’t really give it much thought. It’s better for resumes and camp brochures or stuff like that,” Boyle said. “My mindset is I’ve got to constantly prove myself again, as a coach and as a program. There’s somebody new on the block trying to say, ‘Oh, Montverde’s not good, we’re gonna take your spot.’ It’s always somebody new trying to challenge us.”
