CRAT Supports Shutdown at BSR in Vietnam CRAT Completes Oleflex Maintenance Project

3

In June, CRAT completed several catalyst bed change-outs during a planned Turnaround at BSR refinery in Dung Quat, Vietnam. CRAT was working under UBF Maintenance Sdn Bhd (UBF) from Malaysia who were part of a consortium awarded a significant part of the total scope.

UBF awarded the catalyst change-out work to CRAT, as UBF knew they could rely on CR Asia to do an excellent job from working together previously and it was the first time for BSR to witness inert vessel entry.

Two teams from CRAT performed change-outs on a total of ten units including the HDT reactor and Cold box. All works were completed in co-operation with our client, UBF, and the plant owner, BSR. Both UBF and BSR commented on the high quality of our work and praised our efforts in completing all units on schedule and without any incidents.

Callum SmithProject ManagerCR Asia Thailand

CRAT completed an Oleflex maintenance project ahead of schedule and in a shorter time than their previous best in 2014 as part of a recent Turnaround at HMC in Thailand. CRAT showed they had put into practice the lessons learned from the past and executed an excellent job, completing all reactors significantly faster than the client was expecting.

Better planning, improved collaboration with the client and superb team work from all staff and client teams involved were the keys to making this project an outstanding success.

In addition, CRAT was delighted that the HMC Executive Vice President and Turnaround Management Team joined the safety performance celebration after the project was completed.

Many thanks to HMC for all the hospitality afforded to CRAT when our teams were on site.

CRAT Cleans 399 Heat Exchangers for IRPCCRAT Delivers Successful Project at IRPC

CRAT was awarded one of its biggest cleaning projects ever this year, when it was contracted to clean 359 heat exchangers for IRPC.

During the shutdown, 40 more exchangers were found to need cleaning within the same schedule, making it 399 in total of which 70 were air cooled fin fan exchangers. In addition, the Turnaround required the mechanical cleaning of twelve (12) Fired Heaters.

By employing an experienced team of over 830 specialists, CRAT successfully completed the project ahead of schedule and without any incidents.

Chainarong ChomkaewMechanical SuperintendentCR Asia Thailand

In early 2017, CRAT was awarded a large catalyst services scope at IRPC Refinery Complex comprising five (5) packages of work across seven (7) plants and included five (5) multi-bed reactors and forty (40) single bed reactors, with tray modifications required for two (2) of the multi-bed reactors.

The biggest challenge for CRAT was to complete all of this work within the Turnaround schedule with a number of other large projects being executed at the same time.

During the execution phase, CRAT was requested to change-out a Mercury Removal Unit, which had not been included in the original scope and needed to employ an innovative unloading method (called Wet Dumping) when it was not possible to unload the spent catalyst in one of the large reactors by conventional techniques.

Despite these additional issues, CRAT completed all of the work on time and without any incidents, which received several commendations from the client.

CRAT Awarded TPM Project by Chevron

CRAT was recently awarded a 5 year term contract by Chevron for Total Plant Maintenance (TPM) services of their Oil Depot in Bangkok.

Chevron launched this TPM programme in 2005 and ensure all contractors are carefully vetted through a lengthy qualification process before they can be recognised as an approved contractor for such services.

CRAT was no exception to this and after qualification and contract award, began executing the term contract in July 2017.

CRAT is keen to perform more routine maintenance activities like this and hopes to provide similar services at another Terminal in the near future.

CRAT Completes Tubular Reactor Job for TOC Glycol

In early 2017, CRAT was awarded several large catalyst handling projects including an EO (Tubular) Reactor change-out for TOC Glycol.

One of the biggest challenges for CRAT was completing this project within the desired timeframe with a number of other large projects being executed at the same time.

Due to careful planning and scheduling of all tasks and CRAT’s multi-skilled workforce, CRAT successfully completed this job on time and without any incidents.

CRAT employed its Hurricane vacuum system and air lance equipment to complete this project efficiently and effectively.

TOC Glycol was very pleased with CRAT’s performance and extremely satisfied with the end result after re-starting the unit.

CRAT Delivers Column Success at TPCCRAT Performs Initial Loading for SPEX

CRAT recently performed the initial loading of the new offshore Mercury Removal Unit (MRU) on the SWP platform in the Malampaya field, operated by Shell Philippines Exploration B.V. (SPEX).

The MRU will remove mercury from the stabilized condensate before it is transferred to shore.

CRAT’s scope included not only the loading but also onshore decanting of the absorbent from drums to CHEP bins, mechanical preparations, nitrogen services, bolt tensioning and final leak test.

CRAT performed the work to a high standard without any incidents or spills.

The client seemed very pleased with the results and we look forward to supporting them with further change-outs of this unit in the future.

Callum SmithProject ManagerCR Asia Thailand

CRAT was awarded the column maintenance and inspection scope for the TPC Turnaround earlier this year, which included the dismantling and cleaning of the trays by High Pressure Water Jet (HPWJ) cleaning.

The job was completed as planned, without incident and to the satisfaction of the owner.

In preparing for this project, CRAT planned the tasks in detail and worked co-operatively with the client so that everyone involved knew their roles and responsibilities.

This level of detail combined with CRAT’s experience and excellent communication among all parties during the planning and execution phases ensured a successful outcome.

As with all projects, CRAT focused on the tasks in hand, adopted the 5S workplace technique (sort, straighten, shine, standardize and sustain) for maintaining an orderly workplace and complied with all Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Standards.

In May, CRAT was made aware that SPRC had some flow-rate issues with their CDU column that could require a mini shutdown at very short notice.

The tentative scope for the CDU mini shutdown was blinding and isolation, decontamination of the tower, cleaning of the two (2) heat exchangers, opening the column and cleaning of the internals down as far as the first ten trays.

Options to replace and/or repair the trays along with the reflex distributor pipe were in place to ensure all bases were covered.

A chemical injection procedure was first tested by SPRC to see if this could solve their flow problems in the first few trays of the CDU column. Unfortunately the chemical injection procedure didn’t work as the client had hoped and a mini shutdown or pit-stop was announced.

A big challenge for CRAT was identifying suitable resources and equipment to complete this work, as a number of other large projects were being executed at the same time.

CRAT pulled out all the stops and managed to complete everything on time and without any incidents.

The flow problems went away after the client re-started the unit, which delighted SPRC.

Special thanks go to all those who supported and contributed to the success of this project.

Michael VeldersSpecial Services Division ManagerCR Asia Thailand

In early 2017, CRAT supported the Dow MTP EBSM Plant with their Shutdown and completed all activities ahead of schedule.

Dow plan their shutdowns every two (2) years to allow for catalyst change-outs and major equipment maintenance and for this Shutdown all maintenance work needed to be completed within a tight timeframe.

The main reasons for such an impressive result, as with nearly all projects, was due to meticulous planning and preparation beforehand as well as having an experienced, multi-skilled team handle the execution.

In June, CRAT completed a Parex re-load at PTTGC#5 in a record time from shutdown to start-up, breaking CRAT’s previous record.

Despite having to deal with certain challenges along the way, the client and CRAT overcome all of these by clearly thinking through the issues, deciding what to do and taking quick action to make sure any problems were resolved before they could impact the schedule.

An astonishing 6,400 drums of spent adsorbent (around 1,280 m3) was unloaded and the same quantity of fresh adsorbent was re-loaded during this change-out.

CRAT supplied four (4) high capacity vacuum units, which included two (2) Hurricanes with four (4) large cyclones to enable the vacuuming of the spent adsorbent to be expedited.

Along with installing new internals during the re-load, a new Collar fit up design was introduced, which is the first of its kind. All parties performed extensive planning and preparation to ensure execution of this critical step went smoothly and maximized the advantages that this new design brings.

The four (4) drum automatic tipper from CRAT was also used to help handle the extremely large volume of adsorbent that was re-loaded into the Parex Chambers.

9

CRAT Breaks Parex Re-load Record

An experienced, multi-skilled and very committed workforce together with a well prepared client and Licensor that endorsed early starts and rotating breaks ensured this Parex re-load was completed in a world record time.

CRAT, together with the client and Licensor, started early with the planning for this project and conducted many workshop and training sessions to ensure everyone in the team was well prepared prior to shutting the unit down and starting the execution phase.

This early planning and thorough preparedness of all parties enabled CRAT to deal with any unforeseen difficulties without impacting the schedule, which was on the critical path for the overall Turnaround.

We extend our thanks to everyone that was part of this team and helped execute this job safely and in a timely manner with excellent quality ahead of the planned duration.

CRAT in Subsea Pipeline Pre-Commissioning

As part of our continuing working relationship with CUEL, CRAT received a service order to pre-commission a subsea pipeline to be used by Chevron in the Gulf of Thailand.

The work scope was to perform subsea pipeline hydro-testing services during the 2017 Chevron Installation Campaign.

CRAT successfully completed the hydro-testing work on 42.4 km of pipe, using a test pressure of around 130 bar. The pipelines were a mix of 10 inch and 16 inch in diameter. No leaks were recorded and no re-work was required, which extends CRAT’s clean record to over 3 years since the CUEL service contract was awarded.

The keys to the success of this project and to CRAT extending its clean record with CUEL were as follows:

• CRAT’s hydro-testing experts are extremely knowledgeable, highly experienced and take responsibility for every task

• The CRAT team know which critical steps are important to get right and make sure these are focused on and done well, e.g. ensuring all the air vents off when filling the pipeline with water is a critical step for the hydro-testing operations, as this can cause problems with pressurization, stabilization and holding

• CRAT have access to and make use of specialist equipment to ensure all jobs, like this one, run smoothly and no errors are made

CRAT Participates in BLCP Supplier Day

As CRAI looks forward to its first anniversary of the Reliance Jamnagar Comprehensive Maintenance Contract (CMC), we reflect on how far CRAI has come in a relatively short space of time.

With over 1,000 personnel now on board ranging from mechanical trades, High Pressure Water Jetting, scaffolding, rotary and heat exchanger specialists, there doesn’t seem to be many more things to address. However, painting, insulation, marine tank farm and jetty support, specific NDT, overhead crane testing and several hundred more people for the five (5) Shutdowns either about to start or planned before November, there will be no time to sit back and relax.

Taking over 11 of the 14 plants to date, plus the Central Workshop services, has been an interesting journey, to say the least.

Just about every plant has a static mechanical engineer, rotary engineer, planner, QA/QC and safety officer with section lead maintenance managers covering four (4) or five (5) plants each. We have two (2) planning experts as well as standalone Accounting and HR teams plus a fleet of drivers to move the workers in and around the site. For example, the main office on site is several kilometres from the main gate and another 5 km from the furthest plant we work on.

The Shutdown season is soon to start, with 5 different Shutdowns to be executed by the middle of November. With dates fluctuating to suit market conditions, the Mechanical Services shutdown team have had plenty to consider while they plan and prepare for the Desalination, Coker, Hydrogen, Sulphur and Hydrotreater events. The Sulphur Shutdown alone has over 150 tons of steelwork fabrication involving 4km of welding going through the workshop, keeping 20 welders busy across 2 shifts.

One of the most satisfying aspects of the contract has been the exceptional safety record. With over 1 million man-hours completed without a single LTI, as well as hundreds of safety audits and observations, the newly established team are settling into the CR Asia ways of working, where safety is our No. 1 priority. Several award presentations have been carried out to recognize best practice and good safety behaviours and campaigns targeting the observation trends are now underway.

There’s lots more we could share about this prestigious, flagship contract for CRAI, so we’ll update everyone as to where we are in future editions of the Newsletter.

2017 has continued to demonstrate a marked improvement in safety performance statistics, when compared to previous years. This, despite a large increase in permanent staff along with very large projects having been completed with hundreds of contract staff assisting. The year that started with an impressive work load and some tight schedules for many large turnaround projects, term maintenance contracts and many on-going smaller projects across the Asian region, continues as it started. The achievement of some very good safety results is commendable to all involved. As always, safety is our top priority!

Our training and development teams in our various locations have been excellent yet again, training new employees and contract staff. Also, up-skilling existing staff to the “best-in-class” industry standards and keeping pace with the ever changing standards produced by OSHA and other international OSH regulatory bodies.

The staff employed in our safety departments across the Group make a considerable contribution to creating a safe working environment for everyone by continual monitoring of work activities, coaching of workers and reporting any safety related issues. These people need everyone’s support and co-operation to enable them to be effective in their respective roles and to help continue our journey in creating a “Zero Harm” work place for all CR Asia employees.

I would like to introduce some more of our safety staff from across the CR Asia Group, whom have either joined us recently or whom have been with us for a while but as yet, have not been introduced to the Group as a whole.

New Spirit House at CRAT

CRAT has recently installed a new spirit house on its site to coincide with the opening of the new office.

After consultation with a Brahmin priest, a suitable location for the new spirit house was chosen and an opening ceremony held.

Most homes and businesses in Thailand have a spirit house, which is usually placed in the corner of the property.

The spirit house is a shrine to the protective spirit of a place and is normally in the form of a miniature house or temple, which is mounted on a pillar.

CRAT New Office Building

CRAT’s new office building is finally ready for business after 8 months of construction and all the dust and noise that goes with it.

All back office Staff were smoothly relocated to their new workplaces by the beginning of September, while the Operations Teams have also been on the move and are now able to be all together in what was the original office.

The new office is a two story building adjacent to the original office (now the Operations office block) and accommodates around 70 staff. We have two meeting rooms, the largest on the first floor, which is able to accommodate 30 participants for large meetings and training sessions.

This new building is a fantastic asset for CRAT as we continue to grow and move the business forward.
