”INTRODUCING THE EDITORMakgoo grew up in Ditoebeleng Village, adjacent

to Hackney Shaft in Burgersfort, where he matriculated at Tekanang Secondary School in

2010. His passion for journalism was ignited by the

conditions his fellow villagers endured and the overall lack of service delivery, which he felt was not being addressed. He regards the media as an enabler of change.

After studying journalism, he worked as a television reporter specialising in political reporting for ANN7 for three years. In 2016, he gained further experience as a political reporter at Capital Media and in June 2017 he joined the Anglo American Platinum team as a communications officer for the Far Eastern Limb operations (Bokoni, Twickenham Project, Der Brochen Project and Mototolo Complex).

Editor of the Platinum Times Ramaupi Makgoo wants to wield the power of the pen to enable change.Makgoo’s background and upbringing taught him the importance

of treating people from all walks of life with care and respect. As an editor, he wants to make a difference by improving relations between the operations, their employees and the general public.

His long-term goals are to increase the scope of this publication and to improve the lives of the people in Anglo American Platinum’s host communities. He has already started to empower local companies, helping them to extend their clientele by granting them the opportunity to advertise for free in the Platinum Times.

From a young age, Ramaupi Makgoo wanted to use his writing talent to encourage people to do something to better themselves and others.

VILLAGE TALK!Anglo American Platinum view the communities living around its operations as key stakeholders. There are many villages near Platinum's Far Eastern Limb operations. We asked a few readers what they loved most about living in their particular village.

In my village, we still view traditional leadership as an important pillar that can help instil discipline, care and respect in society. I like that!Tshepiso Muhube, 29, Ngwaabe

What I love the most about Ga-Mampuru, where I live, is that we still respect one another and the fundamental principles of Ubuntu.Ahmed Manana (44), Ga-Mampuru

The community that I come from believes in respect for one another. Eventhough we might have social challenges, the young people still show respect to the elderly. I think this shows that our moral compass is still intact.Gift Ndebele, 44, Swazi Mnyamane

We believe that it is our collective responsibility to help each other where possible, to see the entire village move forward together. We progress as one.Putaneng Mashabela, 31, Modimole

What I love the most about my village is the passion that we have for sport. I also like how we stand together in sad and happy times. This culture of supporting one another has been passed from one generation to the next. Mpho Moloto, 29, Ga-Makgopa

We are a community that is slowly but surely getting more diverse in terms of cultures. However, we remain very united in our diversity and always try to find the best way to collectively formulate strategies to develop our village further.Tlou Mampa, 31, Magaobading

I love the village that I live in because the people around here are extremely friendly and show care and respect to one another.

EMERGENCY HELP IS AT HAND

PROMOTING WELLNESS… Several pastors from the St Engenas Zion Christian Church welcomed the donation and encouraged the DoH and Platinum to keep supporting the communities surrounding Twickenham Project. Standing in front of the new ambulances are, from left, Simon Thobejane; Albert Moshidi; Petrus Malepe; DoH district executive manager Linah Maepa; Johannes Mashabela; and Abraham Makgoale.

The development and health of the communities in which we operate are important to us. These ambulances will help to achieve both of these objectives. We look forward to continuing to support this vital resource, wherever possible.Platinum head of social performance Ted Muhajir

“Two brand new ambulances that Anglo American donated to the Limpopo Department of Health (DoH) on 18 January will make health care more accessible to the communities surrounding Twickenham Project in the Fetakgomo-Tubatse Local Municipality.

One of the donated ambulances is specially designed to transport

women who are about to give birth. The other is for general patient transport. Together, they are valued at R1.5 million.

The reason it is important to have a special ambulance for women giving birth is that Limpopo has the highest number of deaths of women in childbirth in South Africa, at 185 deaths per 100,000 live births. At 133 per 100,000, the national average is already way above the United Nations Millenium Development Goal of four per 100,000.

Not being able to transport women in labour who need emergency care to hospitals in time is a major contributor to the deaths of these women. To receive the right level of care, they also need special equipment, which is not installed in ordinary ambulances.

The second ambulance will provide transport for people who have other health needs, increasing the community’s access to health care.

According to research done for Operation Phakisa, a South African government initiative, it can cost people as much as R1,140 a month just to transport themselves to health care facilities. Most people in Twickenham’s host communities can’t afford this.

The DoH has implemented planned patient transport services for people who can’t afford to access health care or to attend higher level facilities to which they have been referred.

These two ambulances will bolster the resources of the Limpopo DoH to make these services available to Twickenham’s host communities.

Platinum believes in building stronger communities to make a real and lasting difference. Providing these ambulances does just that.

MEDICAL SERVICES... Emergency medical technicians pose with pastors from the St Engenas Zion Christian Church, community members, DoH representatives and senior management from Platinum in front of the two new ambulances. Below: One of the two new ambulances have been fitted with special equipment to assist women in labour.

“From the poorest of countries to the richest of nations, education is the

key to moving forward in any society,” said former president Nelson Mandela.

President Cyril Ramaphosa reinforced this message during his recent SONA, saying: “We should improve the education system and develop the skills that we need now and in future.”

He also highlighted the importance of improving learners’ reading comprehension during their first years at school.

At Anglo American Platinum, we know that the greatest investment we can make in our country’s future is to give our learners access to quality education. Education can minimise the impact of the triple challenge of poverty, unemployment and inequality that our country faces.

All learners have what it takes to achieve. They just need to unlock their potential. If they make the best use of every

YOU NEED TO READ TO SUCCEED!Effective reading strategies and the importance of a quality education are firmly in the spotlight since the recent State of the Nation Address (SONA).

educational opportunity, Limpopo will soon no longer have the lowest matric pass rate (69,4%) in the country. Neither will the province’s Grade 4's have the poorest reading skills in South Africa.

Yes, we have quite a way to go. According to the 2016 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), 91% of Grade 4s in the province could not read for meaning.

So, in 2016, most learners could not read well enough to succeed in subjects across the curriculum.

Good reading skills go hand in hand with good performance. I encourage every learner to read whatever they can lay their

hands on: newspapers, cartoons, magazines or books.

We hope that the Platinum Times, which we publish in English and Sepedi, will become not only a source of news, but also provide you with some reading material for the school children in your home. Because at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter what you read. Just read!

FINDING OPPORTUNITIES EVEN IN TOUGH TIMES

It's a sad reality that the mining industry in South Africa can't provide

employment for everyone. The needs are simply too

great and the commodity prices too low. Mining is becoming a tough business and big companies, like Anglo American, have to find new ways to mine. If they can't find ways to mine productively, they have no choice but to put operations on care and maintenance, as has been done at Twickenham Project.

When exploration shows promise and a new site is identified, it can take years before production actually starts.

In the meantime, communities continue to feel the pinch of South Africa's economic reality. Unemployment is a major issue

in Limpopo. Rural communities are hardest hit and have to find ways to survive.

Finding opportunities may mean furthering your education or encouraging your children to study hard and finish Grade 12.

For adults, finding opportunities might mean focusing on your abilities and using them to your advantage and to provide a service in your community.

Whatever your ability, you can use it to meet the needs of your community.

If you are a talented

seamstress, you could make clothes to sell. If you have a head for numbers, young people would probably be grateful to come to you for extra maths lessons. If you are able to grow vegetables, you could try to sell the excess.

Let's change our mindset and see how we can help ourselves and our communities.

DaanDaan BreetGeneral manager,Far Eastern Limb operations

Communities prosper when everyone uses their abilities to their full potential. In tough economic times, we need to be resilient and find ways to contribute to the upliftment of our communities.

“This is an example of what we can achieve when we work together to take our communities forward. I’m thankful to the principal, the school governing body and the project steering committee for ensuring that there were no interruptions to the building schedule.”

The classrooms and administration blocks were built as part of Anglo American Platinum’s social and labour plan (SLP) for the Twickenham Project’s host communities.

Masebudi Primary School principal Patrick Matabane said that he appreciated Platinum prioritising this project. “We promise to take proper care of these facilities to allow future generations to continue to benefit from them.”

Twickenham Project social performance officer Vincent Mphofelo expressed his gratitude to the key stakeholders. He said

WE NEED SAFE DRIVERS!

“During the holiday season, we felt we needed to remind everyone to adhere to the

rules of the road,” says Mototolo Concentrator acting manager Xhanti Mfazwe.

“But it is important to always be vigilant and take this message home to our host communities. We need to encourage everyone to be safe when they are travelling — not only during the holidays.”

Mototolo Concentrator senior safety, health and environment (SHE) specialist Zandile Tsotetsi echoed Mfazwe’s sentiments. “We gave our employees informative flyers listing the most common causes of motor vehicle accidents. These include drinking and driving, texting while behind the wheel, and not adhering to the rules of the road.”

Tsotetsi urged every one to take preventative steps and to stay alert.

Twickenham Project's people also supported the cause, teaming up with the Fetakgomo-Greater Tubatse Local Municipality traffic department in December to encourage motorists to drive safely on the road.

Twickenham and Der Brochen senior social performance manager Jeffrey Ngobeni explains: “These awareness campaigns encourage all road users to be alert on the roads

Fatigue and speeding also contribute to accidents on the road.

Fetakgomo-Greater Tubatse Local Municipality chief traffic officer Victor Lekwadu thanked Anglo American Platinum for taking an interest in promoting road safety. “We are glad to join Platinum in these road safety campaigns. As traffic officers, we know it's important to work with Platinum to ensure that we take the message of responsible driving to our communities.”

WASTE BECOMES ART!A South African flag made of discarded bottle tops secured Nkotwane Secondary School a spot in the final round of Anglo American Platinum’s Waste to Wonderful competition.

This high school, which serves Mototolo Concentrator’s host

community, joined other finalists from Platinum’s operations in the final round which was held at head office in Johannesburg.

Ngwaabe Comprehensive School also entered. Their entry was a house made of waste materials.

Mototolo Concentrator environmental officer Avhashoni Mashamba thanked the participating schools. “This project aims to teach young people to see waste in a new light. We want them to see value in waste and the importance of recycling,” she said.

“Waste to Wonderful is just one of the ways Platinum

is extending its zero waste to landfill efforts to its host communities.”

Mashamba added: “We loved Nkotwane Secondary School’s South African flag made of bottle caps, with a cardboard box as a base. These materials would just have been discarded, adding to the growing waste problem. This initiative also supports our purpose of having a positive impact on people’s lives and the environment.”

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT

SCORPIONSGENERAL FACTS:

■ There are about 12 different species of scorpions in the Limpopo area.

■ THOSE WITH A THICK TAIL AND SMALL PINCHERS ARE MORE VENOMOUS.

■ Scorpions with a thin tail and big pincers are less venomous. ■ In Limpopo, the Transvaal Thicktail scorpion (Parabuthus

transvaalicus) is the most venomous and its sting can be deadly if untreated.

■ THERE IS ANTI-VENOM AVAILABLE TO TREAT A TRANSVAAL THICKTAIL THICKTAIL SCORPION STING.

■ The Transvaal Thicktail scorpion can spray it’s venom, but only about 0.5m.

SCORPION ECOLOGY: ■ Scorpions are nocturnal (active during night time). ■ They are more active in summer than in winter. ■ They live in burrows in the ground, below rocks, in trees under

the bark, in piles of (braai) wood and underneath compost heaps (dark places).

■ They eat insects and play a role in keeping pests under control. ■ Scorpions will also eat worms, small mammals, like baby

mice and birds.

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE: ■ Never touch or walk where you can’t see! ■ Always use a torch at night! ■ Shake out your shoes and your clothes before getting dressed. ■ Look inside your bed before going to sleep. ■ If you need to remove a scorpion, put a see-through container

like a glass over it, slide a piece of cardboard (or any hard, flat item) underneath and turn it upside down.

■ Scorpions cannot climb up against smooth surfaces like glass. ■ The animal can now safely be released back into nature where

it can continue fulfilling it’s role of keeping Insect numbers down.

Did you know? Platinum is the world’s heaviest precious metal.

We are grateful to Platinum for having upgraded our school so effectively.

Moseki Secondary School principal Michael Thobejane“ ”An outstanding 91% Grade 12 pass rate at Moseki Secondary School rewarded Anglo American Platinum’s investment in improving facilities at the school as part of its social and labour plan (SLP).

Before Platinum constructed an administration block and four classrooms at Moseki Secondary

School in Ga-Makgopa in June 2017, the school had a meagre Grade 12 pass rate of 21%.

Over the past two years, it has doubled its pass rate each year. Last year, it was the top school in its circuit! Its outstanding pass rate exceeded the average for the Limpopo province, which was 69,5%.

According to the principal, Michael Thobejane, the school’s tremendous improvement in its Grade 12 results followed Platinum’s positive intervention.

improvement in Moseki Secondary School’s pass rate,” says Twickenham Project senior social performance manager Jeffrey Ngobeni. “We view education as critical to bringing real empowerment and transformation to our host communities.”

He adds that Platinum and the Department of Basic Education teamed up to launch the Anglo American South Africa education programme last year to help improve learners’ educational outcomes. This is aligned to Platinum’s sustainability strategy, which aims to see schools in our host communities perform among the top 20% of the country’s government schools by 2030.

Dilokong education circuit manager Issac Nkosi congratulated the Moseki Secondary School on its tremendous improvement. “It goes without saying that the building that Twickenham Project donated helped the school to improve its performance. You can see that teachers can now work in a conducive environment and learners are reacting to that positively.”

Anglo American Platinum is pleased about the overall improvement in 2018 matric results at the three technical schools that it supports in collaboration with other key stakeholders. Combined, Mogale-Wa-Bagale, Phaladingoe (near Mogalakwena Complex) and Thekganang (near Amandelbult Complex) achieved an average increase in their pass rate from 83.3% in 2017 to 93.2% in 2018. This is up from an average of 65% at the end of 2014.

To ensure a productive, economically viable society, it is essential that concerned stakeholders follow the appropriate channels to ensure a lawful and peaceful strike.

Developments in the mining industry paired with changes to legislation such as that of the Mining Charter whilst managed by government significantly impact Twickenham and Der Brochen Projects, Mototolo Complex and Bokoni Platinum Mine and consequently its employees and communities.

Twickenham and Der Brochen Projects, Mototolo Complex and Bokoni Platinum Mine are in the process of addressing various community requests and legacy issues. Illegal and unplanned strike action divert resources that should be used in addressing these concerns and ultimately delay and unnecessarily hamper progress.

IMPLICATONS OF AN ILLEGAL STRIKE INCLUDE:• Loss of income to employees • Losses for local business (because of decreased spending power of employees and contractors working at Platinum • Delay in delivery of community and SLP Projects • It places strain on the harmonious relationship between Platinum and its host communities

New Year’s Day...

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS

I can’t believe it’s already the New

Year! I am so excited about all

of our plans.

I have been keeping an eye on his smoking and I’ve even managed to make him join me

for some runs.

Wow! That’s all so exciting! What about you, Tshepo?

Excellent, T! In fact, I think we should join you.

I think most of my energy is going to be spent trying to stay away from fried chicken...

But my goal is to sign up to run a half marathon at the end of the year.

All this talk about the healthy year ahead has made me hungry again! Time for dessert...living a good

life is all about balance after all.

EXAM

“Rethabile has agreed to let me work part-time with her and mentor me. Then I want to start my own small business within the next couple of months...”

She sure has and I’m so grateful – it’s much easier to be healthy when

you have someone to do it with.

I am sure they’ll be grateful, Lesedi!

So, have you guys made any

New Year’s resolutions? I

am going to join a breast cancer

NGO. I want to volunteer my time and

help others in a similar situation.

Yeah, last year fl ew by! We’ve got some

pretty big things happening this year. Oh hey guys!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year you two!

Thanks, Thandi! It’s not easy, but it’s worth it now that I can see the results.

“...and Tebogo’s resolution is to pass his fi nal exams this year and to get accepted to study his Honours afterwards.”

PASS

T, you’re looking really great by the way! I see the new healthy lifestyle

is working!

• General facts:• In Mokopane area there are about 12

different species of scorpions. • Thick tail and small pinchers = more

venomous (or deadly)• Thin tail and big pinchers = less

venomous• In our area there is one species that

can be deadly to humans, namely Transvaal Thicktail scorpion (Parabuthus transvaalicus)

• There is an antivenom available for treatment of a Parabuthustransvaalicus stung.

• Parabuthus transvaalicus can spray it’s venom like the spitting cobras do but probably not further than .5m

• In SA, thousands of people are being stung by scorpions every year but in the last 5 years no deaths recorded

• There are much more Scorpions around us than snakes

SCORPIONS

Parabuthus transvaalicus

• Scorpion ecology: • Scorpions are nocturnal

animals (active during night time)

• They are much more active in summer than in winter

• They live in burrows in the ground, below rocks, in trees under the bark, in piles of (braai) wood and underneath compost heaps – dark places

• They eat insects and play a role in keeping insect pests under control

• Scorpions will also eat worms, small mammals like baby mice & baby birds

• Prevention is better than cure: • Never touch or walk where you

can’t see !!• Always use a torch at night !!• Shake out your shoes and also

your clothes before getting dressed

• Look inside your bed before going to sleep

• If you need to remove a scorpion, put a see through container like a glass over it and slide a piece of cardboard (or any hard, flat, surface item) underneath and turn it upside down

• Scorpions cannot climb up against smooth surfaces like glass.

• The animal can now safely be released back into Nature where it can continue fulfilling it’s role of keeping Insect numbers intact.
