Candidates must attempt Question 1 and one other question –
PLEASE NOTE - Question No. 1 is compulsory
(Please use a separate page for each answer. You may also use the back of each page).
Compulsory 50 Mark Question
Q1. American Manufacturing Company (AMC) are an international trading company with
storage facilities in both Dublin Port and in Stratford, London. They have a well-developed
supply chain system and to meet their JIT requirements they need material to be transported
daily on the night ferry from Dublin to London, and likewise in reverse, nightly between
London and Dublin. AMC have advised that loading and unloading will take less than 10
minutes at their facilities as they have forklifts in place to load the trailer from both sides.
Ideally the trailer should offer some weather protection. Material classified as dangerous goods
will be packed and labelled accordingly.
Your company DT Transport, with bases in Dublin and London, have been asked to tender for
the work. You are the transport manager of DT Transport and you have been asked to bring
forward operating proposals for the services.
The nightly service from Dublin will depart AMC facilities in Dublin 20:00 to board the Dublin
Holyhead ferry at 20:15. On arrival the vehicle will leave Holyhead at 01:00 and arrive in AMC
facilities by 07:30. The nightly departure from London will leave London at 18:30 to board the
ferry in Holyhead at 00:30, arriving in AMC facilities before 06:30.
You have already ascertained that Holyhead to London is 300km, which is a driving time of 5
hours, allowing for traffic in London. Journey time must also take account of a driver’s break.
You are also allowing one hour at both the start and end of each journey, in Dublin and London,
to cover for the driver to sign on, for the vehicle to travel to AMC’s facilities and to load for
departure, and on arrival at AMC facilities, to unload and travel to DT Transport depots for the
vehicle to park and for the driver to sign off.
Draft a short report to your CEO covering the following points:
a. Documentation, authorisations, licences, etc. required to operate the service.
(10 Marks)
b. Draft timetable (Departure and arrival times) for the services during the day and from
