There is much more to a filter’s performance and ability to protect your equipment’s critical components than a micron rating.

What is a micron rating?Micron ratings are used throughout the filter industry as a way to compare the ability of a filter to remove particles of a designated size. The size of the particles are measured in microns (µ), thus the term micron rating.

Is a smaller micron rating better?It is generally believed the smaller the micron rating, the better the filter. This is not always the case. It is important to know both the particle size and efficiency level when looking at a micron rating. Particle size alone means nothing without the additional information of efficiency.

Caterpillar® does not publish micron ratings due to the lack of consistent reporting standards and the confusion this creates when trying to compare filters. Instead Caterpillar categorizes filters into three categories: • Standard Efficiency • Advanced Efficiency • Ultra High Efficiency

FG Filters are approximately half the price of Cat Filters and OCP didn’t see the quality differentiation of the Cat Filter. The local Caterpillar Rep identified the opportunity to convert OCP to Cat Filters in order to improve machine reliability and performance.

SOLUTION:With the support of Caterpillar, Tractafric (the local Cat dealer), and OCP, it was decided to conduct a competitive secondary fuel filter analysis of the Cat 1R-0749 filter and the equivalent FG filter. The test was to compare the fuel injector life while using the different filters. The test ran until the injectors failed (based on injector leakage rate - 3x of initial leakage when new). Caterpillar provided a C9.3 Engine, 6 sets of CR350 injectors, and the filters used in the test. OCP provided an engine dyno, diesel fuel, accessories, and a technician. Tractafric placed a dedicated technician on site to lead the test protocol and control the process with OCP. Data was collected and measured by OCP and Caterpillar in full transparency according to the agreed upon method and test plan.

SITUATION:Yongtaifeng Mining Machinery Co. is a privately owned company focused on coal mining and heavy construction. Within 2 months of beginning a new project the customer experienced injector failures on their 374 and 336 excavators while using Sakura filters and Mobil engine oil. These failures lead to early hour repairs and increased machine downtime that significantly impacted owning and operating costs.

SOLUTION:With help from CEL, their local Cat dealer, the customer agreed to a trial period with Genuine Cat Filters and Fluids. With continued support from CEL, the equipment maintenance was monitored including filter change intervals, oil sampling, and injector life. After a year of utilizing Cat Filters and Fluids the customer had no injector failures and considerably reduced their owning and operating costs.
