How are you feeling in the hot seat as Director of such a prestigious MUSEUM (SALARJUNG) in the Country its almost 15 years NOW? Are you Comfortable? You were asked to take up this position ? or you opted for it ? Are you given a free hand in your day to day administration?

First thing is that it is not a hot seat. Being Hyderabadi, I feel it is great privilege and honor working for one of the prestigious museum .

Yes I was asked to assume the charge as Director, Salar Jung Museum in the In-charge capacity, by the Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India from Jan 2006 to Sept 2007 and again from July 2008 to

JAN-MAR 2020

I feel it is great privilege and

honor working for one of the

prestigious museum .

May 2016. It was a great pleasure to work and I did my best.

Either as Joint Director or Director, my focus is that the museum should show its presence. The people who visit the museum should feel proud of the Institution. It is required to generate positive image among the public and equally to the staff working for the museum.

We have taken steps for R e o r g a n i z a t i o n a n d Modernization of Galleries, Display of objects on modern and scientific lines, Opening New Galleries , Conservation and Preservation of objects by adopting latest techniques, Improved security of the Museums and other developmental activities. Accordingly all the above activities are being attended to simultaneously, by the Salar Jung Museum in consultation with experts, wherever it is necessary.

We are striving to reach World standards.

I never felt such a way. For any Institution, the combined efforts of the all staff makes the Institution success. My efforts are to guide them. Together we strive to make the institution a Centre of Excellence, a benchmark for other museums in the country.

I can say it is 'running and managing the Institution to the satisfaction of the public and my staff'. It may

A f t e r t a k i n g u p a s DIRECTOR of SALAR JUNG MUSEUM ? What are your Top priority in the order of your preferences that needs to be more focused ?

As a DIRECTOR Of such a prestigious Museum ? You must be having a huge Responsibility on your shoulders ? Please could you throw some light?

Could you explain to us your Nature of Job in the Office ?

include all kinds of works.

"Is it so…" I never heard about it from my staff. Of course in my prev ious department I was told about it. But in Salar Jung Museum we work like a family. I feel everybody should feel their responsibilities. When we have given certain mandate or tasks, naturally I expect that we have to discharge the same within given time and with perfection. If there is any difficulty in implementing or attending to the work as per the mandate they are allowed to consult me to sort out the matter after discussions.

Yes , I have submitted technical resignation for the Indian Railway Services and got myself absorbed in the Museum.

The specific reason is that the History /Culture/ Museology are very vast subjects which many do not know, till they are actively involved /associated with the Museum field. Being IRPS officer of the Indian Railways I find the work of Railway Personnel Service and the Museum field as altogether different. While first one is limited to attend to all service matters of Railway personnel serving in a specific Zone, the Museum service covers a vast area . The museum personnel have to satisfy the public at large and specifically the Art Historians, Scholars both in India and abroad.

After joining in the Museum I have realized that

It is learnt that you are a very tough officer? Whichever Department you are posted your staff are scared of you ? Is this True?

It is learnt that you were an Indian Railways personnel Service officer? After coming on a deputation to SALARJUNG MUSEUM ? AFTER 5 Years you had resigned your IRPS Service and continued here then on wards any specific reason you had? Please could you throw some light on this for a better understanding?

JAN-MAR 2020

I have submitted technical

resignation for the Indian Railway Services and got

myself absorbed in the Museum.

there is lot of scope for showing one's talent by working hard and also for enriching their knowledge about Culture . Over a period of time I have developed a liking to the Museum work which has prompted me to resign to my Railway Service and opt to the present field.

No. Absolutely no regrets.

Frankly to tell, I did not consider anything about a satisfying career in the Civil Services till graduation. After joining Post Graduation in Osmania University, I came to know about Civil Services. The three years hard work led to my success.

Regarding working in the museum, as I have replied

Having resigned from your Indian Railway Personnel Service? And got into the SALARJUNG MUSEUM as a DIRECTOR ? Any Regret ?

How are you enjoying your Job as a Civil Servant as DIRECTOR of SALARJUNG MUSEUM? Getting into THIS SERVICE was this your Childhood dream come true or it was just by accidental? Please could you throw some light ?

above, it was accidental in as much as having worked in the Museum on deputation basis for five years, I developed liking the work in the Museum field.

I have exercised my options to various services including Indian Railway Personnel Service as per the norms.

However as per my ranking in the Civil Services Examination, I was offered the Railway Personnel Service .

Joining in Salarjung Museum is purely my option.

Life involves different tasks. It may be in the education, achieving certain goals, or in personal life. Once we achieve our goals successfully, we feel fulfilled. It may not be for long time. Again there will be some new tasks or dreams.

In civil Services there are other services like Indian Foreign Services, Indian Police Service, Indian Forest Service, Indian Revenue Services etc..? But you have chosen IRPS then ? it was your choice or you were selected for IRPS in the order of merit ?..& NOW as Joint Director of SALAR JUNG MUSEUM ?

Before getting into IRPS and After getting into IRPS you must have had a dream ? WAS your dream /desire being cherished? Fulfilled ? If so Please could you share with us?.....Then why did you resign your INDIAN RAILWAYS PERSONNEL SERVICE? & Continued as Joint Director of Salarjung museum?

...05....

THE BEST OF INDIA

JAN-MAR 2020

To be honest at the relevant time I had a dream to clear the All India Civil Services Examination with merit.

Only after joining in the Museum I have realized that there is a lot of scope for enriching knowledge about our Culture . Over a period of time I have developed a liking to the Museum work which has prompted me to resign to the Railway Service and opt to the present field.

I have no regrets as such. I do not believe in any good days or bad days. As they part of life. I accept things as they come in my life as I do not believe in changing the destiny. I believe only in hard work.

As explained above both are two different fields .Therefore there is no comparison.

Yes I am comfortable and happy as Director of the Salar Jung Museum.

I enjoyed my job both in the Railways as well as in

Now that being in THIS service as joint director you are A senior Bureaucrat, you must have had good and bad days ? Could you share some of your vast experiences with us ? Any regret?

DURING your as IRPS officer days you must have held several positions? Which was the best posting which you really enjoyed ?..OR after taking over as as Joint Director of SALAR JUNG MUSEUM? you are Enjoying your JOB?

AS an INDIAN RAILWAYS PERSONNEL SERVICES DAYS ? Did you enjoy your job? OR After coming to SALARJUNG MUSEUM you started enjoying your JOB..HERE you have a close and direct Personal Interactions with the people? please could you share your experiences with us?

the Museum. When I was in Railways I u s e d t o interact with the staff of all t h e departments, solving their grievances .

In Museum also I have to interact with various Research Scholars of both India and abroad, Experts in the museum field , Art Historians, Museum

enthusiasts etc.

Not one, so may…every stage of childhood and college days has given me different memories…I cant weigh which is best..

It is difficult to say.. and I never thought about them. Whatever job I do or perform I try to do to my satisfaction. There are many achievements under my leadership as Director I/c. fro 2008 to 2015 . To quote some of them are listed :

In appreciation of Energy and Conservation the Non-Conventional Energy Development Corporation of A.P. Ltd. awarded first prize to the Salar Jung Museum for the years 2007-08,

Could you share your most memorable moment of your childhood days? Which is the most unforgettable moment? which has become a memory to you?

What are your Strengths & Weaknesses ? Any Achievement so far in your career so long ?

How do you feel about yourself as an Ex- Captain & as an International footballer? When did you make your debut in the Indian Football Team? When did your make your Debut?

Could you explain to us how you took up

Well it's a big honor to represent Country in International Football Tournament. I captain the junior and Senior India on more then one occasion.

I make my Debut for Indian Youth Team in Asian Youth Football Championship in 1972 at Bangkok, Thailand.

I represented Indian Youth from 1972 to 1974 (3 years)

In 1974 I WAS THE CAPTAIN OF THE INDIAN TEAM WHICH STOOD JOINT CHAMPION WITH IRAN IN THE ASIAN YOUTH CHAMPIONSHIP AT BANGKOK, IRAN. THE LAST TROPHY CAME TO INDIA AT THE ASIAN LEVEL.

I S C O R E D 5 G O A L S I N T H I S TOURNAMENT,

TOP SCORER OF THE TOURNAMENT.

With the Senior Indian Football team I make my debut in Merdeka Football Tournament at Ipoh, Malaysia in 1974.

Shabbir AliDhyan Chand Awardee, Ex-Captain & Technical Director,

Indian National Football Team

this particular game – Football? Who was your Inspiration? Or was it just accidental that you became a footballer?

How did you feel when you were selected into the Indian Football Team? Were you very much excited?

Being in the team, which Country did you play against in your 1st International Tournament? Please throw some Light?

Well my brothers Shaban Ali eldest and Late Siraj Ali elder to me. Used to play in Maidan e Ghadeer Darulshifa opposite to our house but they dkn't continue. I also started on this ground with

Abbas Union FC (AUFC). In the beginning family was against it. There was a saying at that time even now also to some extent

Pardinge(study) likhinge houinge Nawab Khelinge kodinge houinge karab translation If u Study you will become Nawab, If you play games you will become badI am a product of AUFC.

Football started as hobby and turned onto passion Late in my playing days and During my Coaching days/time.. my wife and Children supported me and sacrifice also

Excited!...can't express how happy I was when the team was announced. Over the moon.... Player Target to play in age group in State then India.. My first Target I achieved.

Well junior Youth Indian Team in 1972..

Senior in 1974 in Merdeka F T one of the important invitation Tournament at that time. First year being a new comer din't play all matches but I played in one or two matches out of three in junior and senior. From 1973 in Junior all the matches and Captain in 1974.

Well it's a big honor to

represent Country in

International Football

Tournament.

Opens heart about the honorable accolades as a footballer……

Senior India from 1975 to 1984 I was in 1 s t X 1 an d Captain in 1981 in (Three) 3 Tournaments ( M a l a y s i a , North Korea and Thailand ) also Led the Team in Great Wall Cup in Beijing, China in 1984 Plus Captain in few m a t c h e s i n 1 9 8 3 P r e Olympics and 1984 Nehru Cup during World famous Coach CIRIC MILOVAN time with Indian Team

I played about 100 International matches and scored about 30 Goals during 1974-1984(11years)

Scored a fastest Hatrick (by Indian player) against Indonesia with in 35 mins in Merdeka F T at Malaysia in 1976. Captain in 1981 and also in Great Wall Cup F T at Beijing, China in 1984 plus in few matches in different tournaments. Indian Youth Team U-19 from 1972-1974 (3years) 1974 Captain & scored 5 goals, Top scorer of the Tournament. India became joint Champion with Iran. Last Trophy came to India (Joint Champion) at the Asian level.

Played 12 matches in 3 years for Indian Youth.

How many International Matches have you played? Which was the BEST?

During that time there was no exposure tour for the Indian Youth Team like now.

Pele was my all time favourite player plus I used to like Yohan Cruyff & Bechenbauer.

Yeah so many Olympians Hyderabad produced and many Internationals during 1960s. Indian Team was good & Strong that's why They played in Olympics and won 1962 Asian Games.

Football is there not only in Goa and Kolkata but in other places also Kerala, North East States and few other States. During our time a player has to established either from Bombay or Calcutta but since last 25 years a player can established from any State by playing in National League/ I League Teams then from 2014 ISL

Teams.

ISL bought many good foreign players to India. It change the scenery of Football in India but must take some more State Team.

All India tournaments are not there in many states like before coz difficult to get sponsors and good/top teams..

Now a days all are watching on TV European Football and following Europeans Team that's why crowd not coming to watch all India Football Tournaments.

In 2011 and 2018 Indian Football Team qualified for AFC Asia Cup from the qualifying round.

W h o w a s y o u r Favourite Footballer o f y o u r T i m e ? C u r r e n t l y A n y Favourite players?

Could you throw some Light on the Football of your Time compared to the Present Football?

Could you share your most memorable moment of your childhood days? Which is the most unforgettable moment that has become a precious memory to you?

In our time most of the places football fans used to come to watch the matches in large numbers now a days not much coz as I said b4

watching the World football on TV live. People r busy and not getting time like b4. Football in India is not like Europe I mean Club lovers, that in India you get mostly with 3 clubs of India East Bengal, Mohan Bagan and Mohammedan other club supporters are there since last few years coz of I league and now since 2014 ISL. In our time lots of All India football tournaments were there now almost nil.

In my Childhood with Abbas Union F C I scored goals and got top scorer and best player award in few 7s One day tournaments.

Ghani Saheb City Middle School Teacher/Coach selected me after seeing my game ..... played in School Tournament

When Aliya High School won the Inter School Tournament at Hyderabad

Public School to represent Hyderabad in Subroto Mukherjee Cup at New Delhi.

Yah Life is challenging for me from my early days... As I never thought that I will leave Hyderabad & join Tata Sports Club in my young age and I was a good upcoming player but By His Grace I handle nicely and established myself in new Team, new place and to play in wet ground during rainy season entirely different from Hyderabad field and All the teams are of good standard. Player has to think positive. One has to utilised what ever chance He gets.

Haha... the strong and weak point others have to tell. Well since you ask... . As a person soft hearted, little reserved but friendly, many think m proudy but m opposite... Take time to open...

As a footballer Opportunist, good header, most of the time specially inside the 18 yards box..at right place and right time... used to play mostly one or with few touches...

Not a good dribbler but on few occasion after dribbling assist for goal.

As a Coach won all most all trophy in India, started new system 3 5 2 when I was in Salgaocar Sports Club in late 90s about which Novy Kapadia, football writter gave a article in Telegraph English newspaper of Delhi and Calcutta.

Well in any players life always one has to struggle in the begining.... On the field Performance plus to adopt or

adjust to the new Team. In my case yeah initially I felt little home sick but not much as my Sister and other relatives were there in Bombay BUT my struggle yeah lengthy one started off/out side the ground when I took transfer to East Bengal Club Calcutta from Tata Sports Club Bombay in September 1977.

The rule at that time was that if a player wants to take transfer from one State to other, He has to apply 6 months before that is 30th Sept and He will able to play from 1st April.

In my case I apply in time, and sent to AIFF that time in Bangalore but coz of some Technical problem and they wanted to change the rule by showing my case/form... I tried and plead will all but I don't get. In the last week of July 1978 Late Mr P R Dasmunshi that time Vice President went to Bangalore and solved my case...

I was with E a s t B e n g a l Practising b u t n o t

playing matches plus no job cause I was not playing... Santo Da ( Mitra) Ex International & India Coach help me to get a job in United Industrial Bank. This 10 months was very hard tough for me.

I was the Chief Coach of West Bengal State Football Team in 2010/11/12. Won the National Football Championship for Santosh Tropphy after 11 years then retain in 2011.

Since last Dec'2017 I am the Chief Coach of Telangana S t a t e F o o t b a l l Te a m . Secretary/ President TFA offer

It is learnt that Currently You are the Chief Coach for the west Bengal football Team ? is this True? If so please elaborate?

me the post which I happily accepted. To me India 1st then comes State. It's a honor to me.

What ever career you choose, you have to be serious, do hard work but you must enjoy. If you take Football, you have to think k step by step like how in School from primary to middle then high School not think of big in the beginning

There is a scope/ future is there in Football State Central Govt. Job, in other State Corporate teams r there.. On the top of it you will able to Represent State and Country. If you r really good then you can play in Professional Teams in India and aboard. But to reach to this level a player must work hard, should be sincere and has to sacrifice a lot

What is your sincere advice to the younger generation who want to take up football as their career or any Sports or any other career?

What ever career you choose, you

I feel quite elated as an international, and Olympian footballer. I made my debut for India in 1959 for Asia cup at Ernakulam.

In school I was an all rounder I played hockey, football and athletics was an individual champion in inter school athletic meet footaball was my passion. Mr. Joe crasto was my school sports master and was my guide and mentor.

I was over the clouds. my joys knew no bounds.

My first match was against Iran for the Asia cup in 1959 at Ernakulam.

I played about 50 odd matches from 1959 to

I am proud to have played for my Country from the year 1985-89

I got inspired to play the game by watching my elder brother, who was playing for his university team at that time, looking at him i wanted to play the game.

Nothing was accidental, it was through hard work and dedication towards the game.

I was so happy too see my dad's dream of watching me play i the nations color and i was feeling astonishing as

all my hard work payed off.

My first international game was the SAFF Games (South Asian Football Federation), and my first match was against Pakistan, i was playing as the stopper

back and i scored a goal for the team and was awarded as the player of the match.

I have played 40+ matches for India in different levels and my match with japan was the best match in my carrier.

My favorite player of my time was Narender Gurung who was from services team. Now from the current players i like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

There are talented football players in Hyderabad but there is no financial support from the government and no

It is learnt that you are planning to have a dance n music nite in Hyderabad? Is this TRUE? Why Hyderabad you have chosen? Any Specific reason?

More Music. More Dance. More Parties.

Hyderabad is a niche market for event companies like ours, due to the number of youth and working professionals. It has an amazing night life and we would like to tap into this market too. So Hyderabad, get ready to Rock n' Rolla.

Yes, it is true that we are the 1st generation from our family to get into the business line. I belong to a family with a humble background. Since I was a young kid, I was always fascinated by the way the business people thought and worked. It has always been my calling to be a successful entrepreneur, and I am truly blessed to have a supporting family (mom, dad, and my brother), who always support me in whatever I want to do in life. The main inspiration for me to start this company was the life that I wanted to provide for my family, and it couldn't have been achieved by working in a 9 to 5 regular job.

I have been residing in Goa for 10+ years now, and it was a feasible option for me to start here as I was already familiar with the market and the way things worked in Goa.

When I was 7 years old, computer was first introduced in our school. This machine fascinated me to no end, and it still continues to do so today. This fascination was what had led me to pursue my engineering in IT field. After my graduation, I worked in this field for 2 years, and I realized that my calling has always been towards food, music and entertainment. In my

I have many ch i ldhood memories that are still fresh as if happened recently. Out of all these, the most unforgettable one is when I got my first bicycle. It was a Ranger with a straight handle, and I remember riding it for hours on end. I literally had to be dragged off of it for dinner or studies.

God and my family is my source of strength and my core support system. As for my weakness, I would like to say that I have conquered them all and turned them into my strong points.

Achievement of my career so far has been the positive attitude and mindset towards my life and work. And many more are yet to come.

Life gets boring without any challenges. I personally believe it all depends on how you would like to look at life. If you look at it from a negative view, negative is what you will get, but if you change your outlook to a more positive and optimistic one, then life becomes much more rewarding, because life has a funny way of working out in your favour just when you start to believe it never will.

Doctor it is learnt that you are the best heart surgeon Cardiothoracic & Transplant Surgeon at Hyderabad in Apollo Hospital with 99.9% success rate? Is this True? How do you feel about yourself? Please tell us something?

Why did you choose Medical profession? What factors have influenced your decision to become a doctor? Any reason for having taken up as a SURGEON in APOLLO HOSPITAL? You were Invited by this APOLLO HOSPITAL to take up this job? Or you had opted for it?

After taking up a job in APOLLO HOSPITAL, what was your Top priority in the order of your preferences

I would say that my team is one of the best , not just in Hyderabad, but in our country. Cardiothoracic surgery is not a one man job. We need a good number of highly skilled people including anaesthetists, perfusionists, intensivists, nurses etc. I am fortunate to have these hard working people with the result that we are able to offer more than 98% overall success rate. I am fortunate to lead this team.

I am originally from a hamlet called Ghantavari palem, near Tamirisa village in Krishna district, A.P. It was in the middle of fields with about 10 houses, connected to the outside world by radio and a occasional post by Indian posts. I was aware of only doctors, engineers, police officers and collectors. From that place my eldest brother became a doctor. And naturally my path leaned towards medical profession.

Regarding my position in Apollo Hospitals, I was invited by the hospital because of our team's expertise in heart and lung transplantations and minimal access surgery.

that needed to be more focused regarding the Patient's Treatment etc? About your requirements?

You must be having a huge Responsibility on your shoulders ? Please could you explain to us your Nature of Job in Apollo Hospital ? In detail for a better understanding?

It is learnt that you are a very tough DOCTOR & ALSO a tough CARDIAC SURGEON ? Your staff is scared of you? Is this True?

After working in cardiothoracic profession for over 3 decades, my priority has been to take heart and lung transplantation and minimal access surgery programmes one step forward. These are very cost and care intensive programmes and we are working on them with the help of the organization and I am happy to say that we are travelling in the right direction.

In general, we, as doctors have huge responsibility towards people who come with a problem and who trust us. And especially when we work in areas where the expert ise is l imited l ike heart and lung transplantations and minimal access cardiac surgery and we do not have someone to look upon for guidance, it is e v e n m o r e difficult. In the areas where we are working, our team is known and to justify the trust people have on us, we need to update ourselves in these areas. That includes visiting centers of excellence in the world to update us and to stay in touch with experts day and night when we handle these patients. That needs lots of sacrifice from all the team members. Naturally it puts enormous stress on the team.

However, it also gives lots of professional satisfaction that we are able to provide these advances to our needy patients, which was not available locally before we started.

That , probably you should ask our team for details. However, yes, I am proud to say that I am tough because

Confirms that with great power comes great responsibility.....

I would say that my team is one of the best , not just in Hyderabad, but in our country. Cardiothoracic surgery is not a one man job. We need a good number of highly skilled people inc lud ing anaes the t i s t s , perfusionists, intensivists, nurses etc.

excellence needs lots of hardwork and dedication, especially when one is dealing in the areas of life and death. In cardiac surgery, margin of safety is very low and in a team of 20 plus people, if every one does one mistake a month, we will have 20 dead people on our hands.

The tragedy of our country is, we talk a lot and we advice a lot to other people. When it comes to us, we are always an exception. Very few people have that internal drive which will make them excel in work . However most people need external drive to get the best out of them. That's how most mediocre people who settled in USA have excelled in their areas. To make our people give their best in our own country, sometimes we need to be little more tougher. I am glad to say that I was trained under one of the best and tough surgeons in this country Prof Stanley John at Vellore. For him patient safety is the ultimate and he never spared anyone to achieve it.

Also my philosophy has been that before we leave this world, we need to make it atleast a little better than when we came in to this world. One of my favourite quotes is by Sir Issac newton-"If I have seen further than others, it is by standing upon the shoulders of giants before me". Today ,as a medical professional, it is my responsibility to contribute to the progress of medicine in our country for our people and with that sort of mindset and perfection attitude, necessarily make me tough and some people get upset. It is not a pleasant thing to be tough. However to achiever bigger things, one need to be tough.

I am enjoying my work at Apollo hospitals, thanks to the support by the management. From the time I joined MBBS, It has been my desire to become a cardiac surgeon. I dreamt of it for nearly seven years during my undergraduation and postgraduation. After MS General surgery, many of my professors and friends discouraged me from taking it up. In 1985, there were not many heart

surgery centers in India and many discouraged me saying I will be wasting my talent and I should take up specialities like urology, surgical oncology, gastroenterology etc. It was a confusing time for a couple of months. Then one of my paediatric surgery professors- Dr Y. Nayudamma told me-" Dr Gokhale, one never knows how the future will be. Right now cardiac surgery is underdeveloped. But may be it will grow further in the coming decades. Whatever you want to do you do. But aim to be the best".

I never looked back after that. I throughly enjoyed my journey and Iam still enjoying it.

Like every human being , I also had my dreams.

My first dream was to become a cardiothoracic surgeon. Thanks to the support of my family, I could do that.

I had my second dream when I went to Australia in 1992 for further training. With the support of a famous cardiac surgeon Dr B.V.Ramarao, I went to St. Vincent's hospital, Sydney. When I went, I did not know how to do a coronary artery bypass surgery, the most common heart operation performed these days. When I went to that place, I found an amazing thing. For a common man, they are able to do the toughest operations in cardiothoracic surgery like heart and lung transplantations for free and the whole system-medical, police, administrative

etc . work together to save an ordinary mortal without any influence or money power. It ignited my mind and I

decided that someday I should do these operations back at home, at least initially to affordable patients and latter to unaffordable too. I returned in 1996 to Hyderabad. It was there on the back of mind all the time. And it happened in 2004, after 12 years, when we did the first heart transplant in Andhra pradesh and it took almost 20 years before we could do lung transplant, again for the first time in these areas. And in 2017, we did our first heart

transplant for a poor patient at Government General Hospital, Guntur by raising donations and we are still supporting him for drugs. Today ours is the first or second team in India to do all types of cadaveric thoracic transplants including heart transplantation, single lung transplantation, double lung transplantation, combined heart and lung transplantation and piggy-back heart transplantation (patient will have two hearts).

I did my schooling from a government school- Z.P.H. School, Tamirisa and my medical undergraduation and postgraduation from Government medical college, Guntur. For various reasons, I could not serve in government hospitals. It always haunted me that I have taken so much from this society to become what I am today and I am not giving back enough. Giving back to the society has been my third dream. I established a trust" Sahrudaya Health, Medical and Education Trust" nearly a decade ago with a view to do something for the poor. Initially I was conducting health camps and helping financially a few children and adults to undergo heart surgeries. However that did not give me satisfaction. Then I got the opportunity to enter into a public private partnership with the government of Andhra Pradesh to start open heart surgery programme at Government General Hospital, Guntur, my alma matter. There were no open hert surgery facilities there till then. From March 2015 till March 2019, we did nearly 560 open heart surgeries and 4 heart transplants there and established the department and handed over to the surgeons employed by the government to take it forward. We spent nearly 4 crores which was raised through donations by the philanthrophists. Now we are working on improving the infrastructure at the Z.P.H.School, Tamirisa by raising donations from old students and create facilities in par with any private school.

As a CARDIAC SURGEON, You must have had good and bad days ? Could you share some of your vast experiences with us? Any regret?

Life as a cardiac surgeon is like on a roller coaster. Partly we need to take the blame. Knowing fully well that we are not God or God's messengers, still we want every patient to get better. Every time a patient has an irregular heart beat, we have a missed

beat. People often do not know the stress levels we go through. I can write volumes about it.

Once I had a patient who was a very high risk candidate for bypass surgery. Explained all the risks to the patient and family and did surgery. Expectedly patient became sick after surgery and when I told the patient's daughter that we are doing our best and only God's grace can get him to recover, she told me- Doctor, then I should have taken him to a temple and not to a hospital. You can understand how difficult it would be to explain to her at that time that we should do our bit and prey God to help us.

I had many good days in the last 3 decades where we had many critically ill patients who recovered after surgery. Many of those were refused elsewhere in view of high risks. Some of them underwent procedures like heart transplantation, lung transplantation, minimal access

heart surgeries which we initiated.

Of course we also had bad days when patients whom we thought would recover died due to unexpected complications or because they are high risk patients. In some such situations, I felt like crying like a family member. In one such situation, I have written this. This is not only my feeling . but it will represent the feeling of doctors in general.

" I lost a patient today

I know everyone has to die one day

But my heart bleeds to see someone dying after I operate

He came looking for me hoping that I will save him

Now I cannot take the sorrow in the eyes of those left behind and feel like crying with them

Oh God, what more can I do to prevent this

I know I have done to the best of my ability

Life as a cardiac surgeon is like on a roller coaster. Partly we need to take the blame. Knowing fully well that we are not God or God's messengers, still we want every patient to get better.

I chose this profession because I love it. Why ? I do not know. But my heart always leaned towards cardiothoracic surgery and I never had serious thoughts about any other speciality. Is it influence of world famous surgeons like Dr. Denton Cololey, about whom we used to read? Or is it that we used to see many heart valve patients in undergraduation and after diagnosis, buck used to stop there. When I was doing postgraduation, cardiac surgery was there only in 2 or 3 centers in India. My destiny and my subconscious mind, must have put me in this direction telling me that I can contribute more in this area to the society.

Being from a village without water or electricity or any facilities, I have lots of memories. Looking back, I thank the almighty every day for bringing me all the way to where I am from where I was. My mother Alla Jhansi bai had lots of influence on me. She never physically abused me . But with her eyes, she used to guide me. She taught me the importance of studying well and value of money. Those days, coming from an agricultural family, even a rupee had its value. I was probably in the 7th grade that year. I asked my mother, some money to buy crackers for Deepavali. She gave me rupees five and told me to spend carefully. I asked for 10 rupees and I said I will not take five rupees as all my friends are spending 15-20 rupees. She took those five rupees back . I could not buy any. That taught me value of money and financial discipline.

Me and my wife Venkata Lakshmi had never any doubts about coming back. Ours is a closely knit family with my parents, brothers and sister and my wife was also the only child to her parents. We wanted to take care of our parents

You are a recipient of PADMASRI AWARDEE ? How do you feel about yourself?

You could have very easily got a JOB IN ANY Government HOSPITAL in India? In State Government Hospitals or Central government t Hospitals? Then, why did you prefer a job in a Private Hospital?

People say that current days Doctors are very Commercial? What's your Comment on this?

What is your main MOTTO & FOCUS in LIFE?

What are your Hobbies? Any Favorite as Such?

I am humbled that Govt of India chose me for this award. This only increased my awareness of my responsibility to give back to the society and give a helping hand to those who were less fortunate than me.

In fact it is not easy to get a job in government hospitals in India. I worked for 2 years as Assistant Professor in cardiothoracic surgery at NIMS, Hyderabad and I went for further training abroad. When I came back, I could not get the freedom I need to put into practice what I learnt. So I joined in private sector. In private sector, if you are worthy, you get encouragement . Had I stayed in government hospital, I would not have been able to do what I have done so far.

However, as I mentioned before, I wanted to help government organizations from outside . That is how we established open heart surgery unit in the government hospital at Guntur. It was more than 50 years since it started and we feel proud that we did the first open heart surgery there (where I was told not do cardiothoracic surgery as it has no future) and by doing 4 heart transplants in that organization, it became 3rd or 4th state run government hospital in India to do so many transplants.

Yes and No. Both are correct. Doctors are not Gods. In a materialistic world where money is needed to give good education to children and to have a reasonable life, they need to make a reasonable money. This is where government has totally failed by escaping from its duty and handing over responsibilities to private organizations. Corporitization was the worst thing that happened to medicine and education in our country. In any developed country with decent government health care, government has taken the responsibility of paying medical professionals decently and providing infrastructure so that they can provide good care. Here we have failed in both.

However most doctors have never compromised care to the patient- only cost may differ. If we have to offer cost effective care, it is possible only when government spends a reasonable amount of GDP on health and in government hospitals and in preventive care. Until then , we need to put pressure on government and not blame doctors or private organizations.

My presence in this world should add value to the world and I work towards it every moment.

My hobby is my profession. I like to watch movies and read books. As age is advancing, my favourite is having

quality time with my wife and children.

I spend lots of time travelling to various hospitals in India and abroad to learn new procedures for better patient care. Regarding nonprofessional holidays, my wife has a list of places to see abroad and in India and I accompany her and enjoy them.

My strengths are my ability to work hard and willingness to keep learning and perseverance to achieve what I aim at. My weakness is my perfectionism and intolerance to anything less than that.

Life is very precious and whatever we want to do, we have only this life. It is very interesting that in a life span of approximately 25000 days, we spend more than half either in childhood or in sleep. Another quarter on cribbing and complaining and when we get too old to do anything worthwhile. Real life is probably only a few thousand days. Sometimes we get too involved and sometimes, we realise that life is like a play and we should not get too involved. Ultimate is to stay happy and create happiness to others. I like to extract juice from every

second of life.

Life is a great opportunity to live. There is nothing like best or worst. Whatever we do , it should be positive and not harm anyone. Medicine is one of the greatest professions

where you see happiness in the eyes of people who come with pain and health problems. However remember that every profession is important in the world to the fellow who is in need of it. Just do what you like, but as my professor said "Even if you want to be a cobbler, be the best". However we should not lose sight of the most important thing in life-stay happy and create happiness to others and remember that we are part of a society and we have a responsibility to it, like to our family .

Where is your Favourite Holiday destination in India? And Abroad?

What are your Strengths & Weaknesses?

How do you look at LIFE from the broader Angle Perspective?

What is your sincere advise to the younger generation who would like to become a DOCTOR or get into any other services or any career?

Festive seasons bring joy and cheer in the minds of both young and aged. Festivals are an expressive way to celebrate glorious heritage, culture and traditions. They are meant to rejoice special moments and emotions in our lives with our loved ones. They play an important role to add structure to our social lives, and connect us with our families and backgrounds. The significance of festivals includes keeping us closer to our religion and tradition, promoting harmony and carrying the message of the past generations to the present and future. This article intends to share such a festive delight of Vadodara Tamil Christian Fellowship on its "Silver Jubilee Christmas Carnival" celebrated on December 08, 2019.

India is worldwide known for its cultural diversity and colorful festivals. Communities share many of these festivals across the country, albeit with variation on their history, theme and method of celebration. We have national festivals such as the Independence Day, the Republic Day and Gandhi Jayanti. Every state in India

has about 20 to 30 grand festivals that are celebrated at different times of the year. One of the biggest festivals of India, 'Diwali' or the Festival of Lights is usually celebrated in October or November that celebrates the victory of good over evil. 'Holi' is the festival of colours usually celebrated in March. ''RakshaBandhan celebrates the bond of affection between brothers and sisters. 'Navratri', the festival of nights, lasts for 9 days; Gujaratis perform their traditional dances 'Garba' and 'Dandiya-Raas' during Navratri. Shivaratri, Janmashtami and Ganesha Chaturthiare few others. 'Baisakhi' is an ancient harvest festival celebrated across the northern Indian subcontinent, especially in the state of Punjab.'Ramadan' is intended to teach Muslims about patience, spirituality, humility and submissiveness to God. (Information on festivals referred from different articles). The month of December is so special as December 25 is the Christmas Day, a Christian festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.Christmas is celebrated across more than 160 countries byseveral billions of people.

December is a month of joyful mood, holidays, togetherness and celebrations.People from all cultures around the world celebrate Christmas in many different ways. Theholiday season means it's time for all things red, green, merry, and bright, while we obviously adore Christmas, it can sometimes be all too easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle of the holiday preparations. Before, Santa slips down the chimney; you ought tobakecakes and cookies, decorate a tree and buy so many presents for the dear and near. It's no wonder that by the time the big day finally arrives; all you want to do is kick back with a glass of Champagne and a bucket of Christmas

candies. But wait! Christmas is about so much more than festive decor and gifts under the tree, it's about celebrating family, friends, charity and everything else that brings you joy.

The story of Christmas Carnival would give a glimpse of unity, tradition and love prevailing among the Tamils in Vadodara. Mrs. KernabKanagaraj founded the interdenominational group "Vadodara Tamil Christian Fellowship" in the year 1994 with the major objectives of uniting the Tamil Christian families residing in Vadodara, strengthen the relationship and

worship the Lord in their mother tongue Tamil. Mrs. Margret Pillaicoordinated till March 2002, Dr. DeivaOswin Stanley from April 2002 till August 2008; Mrs. Evangeline Prince till December 2011 and again Dr. DeivaOswin Stanley from January 2012 onwards have taken over the coordinating responsibility of the fellowship activities. We strengthen our families' bondages through different activities like fortnight andmonthly prayer meetings at one of our member's home as per our annual plan, celebrating spring, harvest, monsoon and thanks giving festivals, auctions, love feasts, birthdays, wedding days wishes and parties, fund raising acts, nature tours, charity, women's meetings, house visits, house to house carols, annual Bible Examinations, Drawing and quiz competitions, Prizes, annual Christmas celebrations,Santa Gifts, performing arts and music, and many others.

The reason for the success of the fellowship is that, we act in one accord in the Lord. Each of our families wholeheartedly participates in every activity. In the recent years we have initiated to develop the in-house capacity of the members by compulsorily admitting them to involve and lead the worship, sharing the gospel and lead the gatherings. This way the oratory, singing and especially the leadership skills of our members were empowered. Monthly quiz and annual bible examinations for all the age groups encourage the members in reading and learning the gospel. During the

harvest and monsoon festivals our children and adults participated in drawing and word quiz games that enabled them to understand the environment and climate change. This has enhanced the creativity and artistic skills of the adults too. Every year we purchase outfits of same colour or design and wear it together to mark our unity among other people. We always stand tall to express love to each other and shoulder each other's burdens and share each other's joy.

Christmas 2019 was very special for our fellowship as it marked the 25th year of foundation - the Silver Jubilee Year. The preparation for celebration started even before a year;the fund raising team comprising of five smart ladiesShanthiKannan, Amala Noble, SheelaDurai, JansiThavamaniand BlessyNadarand the two men Raja Singh and John Abraham efficiently raised funds.RebeccaBoda from Canada, CharlesThangaraj from Sweden, Margret Pillai and BrindaSundarthe alumni have also contributed for the occasion. and entertainments. MathewVictor played the best Santa Claus.

Around 60 members of Vadodara Tamil Christian Prayer Fellowship with small children and elders joined carol rounds, visited all the familiesof 160 members on December 01, 2019 and shared the love of God and Yuletide. Traditionally, people decorate their homes with bright, colourful lights, stars and a Christmas tree. Our members were highly cooperative, wearing a specially designed and tailored silver shining over coat, red tops, blue bottom with Santa cap and made the day gala by sharing the Christmas Gospel, singing, dancing and praising the Lord; it was a great time of fun, charm and love.

We celebrated the Silver Jubilee Christmas Carnival on December 08, 2019 at CNI St. James Church, Fategunj, Vadodara, Gujarat.Collectively dictated a dress code for all like, red silk saree for ladies, silk dhoti and royal blue shirt for men, red silk skirt and navy blue blouse for girls and red silk shirt and dhoti for boys. All the ladies were decked with uniformhairstyle, flowers and accessories. All members were sparkling in those adornments on the day, ruling the thumb of unity.

The program started with an opening word of gospel and prayers by Rev. Manish and VioletRaju. Dr. D e i v a O s w i n S t a n l e y, S a r o j a N a d a r , SuseelaNadar, Evangeline Prince and SheelaDurailighted the bronze lamp and declared the celebration open. Cutting of the cake to symbolize our everlasting support to the fellowship, friends and to take care of their families was made by the team of Dr. DeivaOswin Stanley, Rev. Ebun Marcus, RajuNadar, Prince Kanagaraj, Raja Singh, John Abraham, Joseph Nadar, C.P. Kannan and Noble Devasagayam. Shanthi Kannan read the Bible passage and Solomon Jebarajshared the Christmas message. Children and elders competently presented songs, dances and skits. Prizes and gifts were presentedto the winners and participants of competitions."Star of the Event"

certificates were offered to 22 active members. It was mesmerizing and emotional while SarojaNadar, SuseelaNadar, Ebun Marcus, and BlessyNadar crowned Dr. Oswin Stanley as the "Queen of the Event".Silver Jubilee Memento in stainless steel with the fellowship logo embossed was designed by Dr. Oswin and presented to all the families in commemoration of the 25th year completion. Shanthi Royal extended vote of thanks and Rev. Esau Muthiah, Methodist Church our beloved friend and member blessed the occasion and declared the celebration closed. A typical South Indian meal in banana leaves was served. Media from Tamil Nadu - PuthiyaParimaanam TV, Puhari Sheriff and photography by Pal Pandi, Theni District, covered the entire programexcellently and broadcasted with zeal.

Festivals are important as they help extending brotherhood and faith between humans. Festivals connect people with God and experiences. Connection with God creates a positive attitude in behavior towards each other.Irrespective of caste, creed, skin tone and occupation, positive behaviorwill develop a sense of respect betweeneach otherand spreads relationship, love and trustamongst the society.Festivals help people to live a fuller and better life, get rid of monotony and provide healthy recreation. They promote unity, togetherness, self-discipline and austerity.

Festivals are celebrated with a purpose to reaffirm our commitment to our family, friends and the community we live in. It is also a happy occasion for making new pledges.Festivals are opportunity to connect for a cause between regions, countries and continents. Besides being fun, well-managed festivals and events offer a host of economic and social benefits to communities. Boosting the economy, by definition, festivals attract visitors, and visitors spend money, which boosts the local economy both on and off the festival site.Lets us celebrate more and more festivals that binds us together with everlasting cheer. May this New Year 2020 brings you new happiness, new goals, new achievements and a lot of new inspirations on your life. Wishing you a year fully loaded with happiness and blessings.

JAN-MAR 2020

After seeing the photograph of Sachin, Sunil Gavaskar and Gundappa Vishvanath being felicitated by a doyen of another world Amitabh Bachhan, I was swept with emotion and with nostalgia. This photograph would be cherished in my mind forever and I count myself fortunate to have seen all the three cricketers in full flourish. I have followed the careers of all three maestros of batting very closely and what could be more apt than to be felicitated by a fighter from the film industry 'Angry Young Man' Amitabh Bachhan.

It was in 1969 at Green Park, Kanpur and the Indians were playing a very strong Australian side led by Bill Lawry. There was a young lad from Karnataka (then Mysore) who was making a debut for India. He was highly rated though by stature (height) he was a dwarf. He was known to play the back cut in his own style just as Ranji used to play the glance. When this dwarf came to play his first innings, he was bowled for a duck. There was a hushed silence in the stadium (we were glued to our radios at that time). The match went on and in the second innings when this dwarf came to bat, only the knowledgeable gave him some chance. The

layman was convinced that this batsman was full of nerves and would not be able to handle the situation.

What an innings this dwarf played. He played all the shots in the book but all were played with an ease of an artist giving final touches to his art with deft strokes of his brush. I used to consider his bat as an extension of his arms. Except for some drives of David Gower and the flicks of Azharuddin, I have not seen a batsman playing all strokes with ease as if he is doing it in his sleep. The Dwarf is no other than Gundappa Visvanath. A thorough

gentleman, who could patent the term 'Gentleman'. Scoring over 6000 ruins in Tests and nearly 18,000 in first class cricket he towers all when match-winning knocks are talked about. Most of his knocks came under tremendous pressure either to win or to save the test.

If Gundappa Visvanath was an artist then Sunil Manohar Gavaskar was a 'clinician'. As an artist the mind of Visvanath could wander anywhere and therefore he could read no book. But Gavaskar was all from the book. If the art of batting has to be learned then it was from Gavaskar. He played all strokes in the book but taking into consideration, the team's needs he curtailed many of them especially the horizontal strokes, which would be a little dangerous as he was an opener. The true Gavaskar was seen in 1983 when at Kanpur, Malcolm Marshall at his fastest, bowled a 'snorter' which came up to the nose of Gavaskar from good length spot. The ball knocked the bat off the maestro's hands to be out caught by Alvin Greenidge at forward short leg. I am still visualising the visibly flushed and insulted Gavaskar bearing the ignominy of picking up his bat from the ground and walking back to the pavilion. India had lost that match badly. In the next test in Delhi, I was in my pharmacy hearing the commentary and 'Lo Behold' the first ball from the fiery Marshall was despatched over the long leg boundary for a huge hooked six. The over was dominated by a flurry of fours and here the battle royal was on. I promptly closed by shop and ran to my neighbour's house to watch the action on TV. What an innings it was. He pulverised the fast West Indian attack and took the fight to the opposition. He scored his thirtieth century there and according to me it was his best I have seen.

Sachin Tendulkar Some time in 1987/8 season Donacharya Ramakant Achrekar came to Nehru Stadium, Goa with two of his disciples. They had come to participate in the All India Bukkam single wicket Tournament in which I was also a participant having won it once. Their names were Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli. They had become famous for the i r 664 unbeaten partnership in Harris Shield in a school match against Xaviers. Both kids looked confident when they participated and showed enough promise that even a

layman could safely say that these two were future India players.

Kambli got the first break and what a debut series it was. Sachin came later in November 1989 when he toured Pakistan. As time passed by it was evident that Sachin was immensely talented natural player who was sent by

God to only play cricket. Same with Kambli but Kambli withered away due to different reasons. Sachin went ahead by leaps and bounds only because of his humility. Here he had a temperament of a saint, his feet firmly on ground and head over his broad shoulders. His exploits on the ground need not be highlighted as it is well documented and in the minds of all cricket lovers. But I am going to stress only one incident of his which underlines his humble nature of gratitude. Sachin was a regular participant of the Bukkam trophy in Goa. Sachin married Dr Anjali Tendulkar, a paediatrician, on 24th May 1995 when in the peak of his career. His wedding was celebrated like the most historic moment by all. Only one person from Goa was invited for his wedding and that was Ravindra Bukkam, a simple government servant who used to organise the Bukkam Trophy. Here is the real Tendulkar. By now he must have added many friends who are top businesspeople but Sachin realized that one of the rungs to his success was Ravindra Bukkam and did not forget him. Not only did he invite him but sent his air ticket and stay at Taj Hotel with vehicle at his service to travel to Juhu where his wedding took place. Sachin is still the same simple person. Still he gets off from his car to participate in a gully cricket match in Mumbai with the kids in the area. Such cricketers are found

once in a century and Sachin will be the ne and only for a very long time

God give all of them long life as they have entertained us with their art by sweating it out for the country.
