Welcometo the INCOSE UK MBSE Working Group

Interest Group Meeting

MBSE Interest Group Mission Statement – the aims of the MBSE Interest Group are to:

• Promote the use and understanding of MBSE,

• Facilitate and improve communication between System Engineers practicing MBSE,

• Promote the use of models in Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) Education,

• Inform and educate the wider engineering community about all things MBSE.

MBSE Working Group Mission Statement – the aims of the MBSE Working Group are to:

• Identify and catalogue the Tools, Techniques and Languages used,

• Provide guidance on how to best apply MBSE techniques across the lifecycle,

• Support the MBSE Initiative run by INCOSE Central and the OMG,

• Work with the other INCOSE WGs and IGs to better understand the relationships between MBSE

and other SE topics.

Previous Meeting 28th July

• Functional Architecture Made Simple with ISE&PPOOA MBSE Methodology

Jose L. Fernandez and Alfonso Garcia

The foundation and dimensions of the Integrated Systems Engineering (ISE) and Process Pipelines in Object Oriented Architectures (PPOO) MBSE methodology, illustrating its application with an example.

• Heads up that Ewan Brown, who presented MBSE application to Landing Gear Design at our May meeting preparing a survey to support his Masters Project, requesting help.

Survey subsequently produced and email request and link to survey sent to the MBSE Working Group membership “Leveraging MBSE Skills for Industry”. Intent is for Ewan to present his research findings at a future MBSE Interest Group meeting.

Ewan has received and is processing responses and thank you to those who have been able to contribute.

Discussion

• MBSE and Requirements Management

– Lead in perspective from Rolls Royce:

• Jon Symons

• Matthew Howlett

• Peter Douglas

– Also, Configuration Management reflection

INCOSE UK MBSE Interest Group meeting 27th October 2021 9

Requirements Management

• During the early stages of development, the flexibility of MBSE supports:– Problem understanding– Development and maturation of product requirements– Development of system understanding of all 4 pillars of SysML (requirements,

structure, behaviour and parametrics)

• However, as you narrow the problem and solution space into a full definition, greater emphasis is placed on configuration management

• As a result, the way requirements are managed changes through a programme:– During the initial stages (when understanding & elicitation are more important than

configuration management) requirements are best managed in an MBSE tool • During this stage, a Requirements tool may be used but this would be populated from

an MBSE model which is the master. Synchronisation would occur from the MBSE tool to the requirements management tool

– During the design definition (when greater emphasis is placed on configuration control) requirements are best managed in a requirements management tool.

• During this stage, MBSE may still be used, but a requirements management tool is the master for requirements and requirements would be synchronised from the requirements management tool to MBSE

– For similar reasons, verification strategies are managed via a requirements management tool, rather than an MBSE tool

Configuration Management

• Although most MBSE tools offer repositories with version control, configuration management is not as easy to implement– What parts of a model are the configuration items?

– How to control and approve changes (branch/merge?)

– How to prevent (and detect) in-advertent changes being made?

• MBSE tools will show you what has changed if you go look for it; a Configuration Management tool should show you that something has changed, without the need to run a report each time

MBSE Work Streams Updates
