ICT Integration Solution Concept JKUAT, working with public/private industry partners in 2013,

conceptualized six pillars towards an end-to-end solution for ICT

integration in education:

policy and strategy;

hardware, software and applications;

curriculum, e-content and e-books;

training and capacity building;

technical support and connectivity and

e-waste management

Hardware Solution JKUAT has remained steadfast in the pursuit of the local assembly of

electronics.

The University has pursued the dream and now has began

assembling laptops – the TAIFA Brand Laptop.

The University has done 4000 units for the JKUAT Students Laptop

Project.

The TAIFA Laptops are available for university students, staff and other

higher education stakeholders.

E-Waste from ICT Integration in Education

Male: 6,576,100; Female: 6,223,400; Total 12,799,500

The figures are very conservative given the estimates of a total of 20.1 M students

in the education system by MOEST in 2013.

The MOEST ICT Integration in Education targeted class one pupils estimated at 1.2 Million.

All education institutions have also adopted ICT integration – JKUAT in 2013.

Assuming the number is constant for 8 years and no replacement for each pupil through to

class 8 we would have 9.6M laptops in public primary schools in 2023.

Given a life-span of 2-3 years for each class there will be about 2 replacements by the time

each pupil is in class 8 i.e by the time the 2015 class one pupils complete there will be about

19.2 million laptops in primary schools. Add 19.2M from private primary schools!

Assuming enrolment in secondary schools is 1/5 of primary schools and only 1 laptop from

form 1 to 4 we would have 1/5*1.2M*2Cycles=0.96M laptops in secondary schools by 2023.

Assuming a contribution of 0.48M from all other education institutions by 2023 we will have

had a gigantic 39.84M laptops in contribution to e-waste footprint in Kenya by 2023.

East African Region - Projections

9

- At a projected 41.8M people in 2013, Kenya is just about 30% of EA Region’s population.

- Barring any differences in the education systems and assuming that all EA countries adopt ICT

integration in education – Rwanda already did! – the contribution in e-waste in the education

system is 132.8M by 2023 i.e. (39.84*100)/30

We must all in one accord arise and do something tangible before the e-waste monster grows any mightier!
