I cannot believe that my term as District Governor has come to an end.

I have learned a great deal and met some interesting people. I have man-

aged to go to many of our district clubs although unfortunately I haven’t

been to all of them. With our district stretching from the borders of Mexi-

co to the borders of Canada it makes the travel difficult. I do follow what

you are doing on Facebook and our District Website, so please keep send-

ing in news of what your clubs are up to so that all District clubs can get

ideas from you and you can get ideas from them. We can all benefit from

other people’s ideas.

For those of you who did not make it to our District Meeting here in Tuc-

son, we had a great time. Our International President Duane Capps and his

wife Lisa were in attendance. Duane installed our new Board for the next year. Deborah Maddox will be Dis-

trict Governor and Virginia McAfee will be the District Governor Elect. I am really looking forward to working

with both of them.

We have three big events to look forward to next year. Our Region 8 meeting will be in Las Vegas again at the

Orleans and will be in February, and then in July our International Convention will be in Reno, Nevada, and

immediately following that our District meeting will be the very next day, so you won’t have to travel to two

major events.

Once again I want to let everyone know what an interesting year I have had as your District Governor. I feel

that we have celebrated our Centennial year with gusto. Our International Convention in Birmingham was a

beautiful way to start our next century. Many people got to see the restorations finished at Headquarters

and then see the work that CIRC is doing. I think everyone who attended this presentation was duly im-

pressed.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your District Governor this year. Keep up the good work you are all

doing.

INTERNATIONAL DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

Linda Colley, Director, Civitan International Region 8

As we finish the final quarter of the 100th year of Civitan, it is crucial

that we maintain and, if possible, increase our club memberships. We

all know that getting the word “Civitan” out there is of primary im-

portance, through print and electronic media as well as by advertising

our meetings, projects, events and fundraisers. But what about that

“elevator speech”, the 30-second answer to the question, “What is Civitan, anyway?” Here

are some fantastic details about Civitan today that are worth sharing with your members and

with anyone who wants to know more about our wonderful organization:

1. Civitan now has a presence in 48 countries world-wide, with the fastest-growing area

currently being Africa!

2. We are one of the oldest, longest-lasting community service organizations in the world,

celebrating our hundredth anniversary this year.

3. The Civitan International Research Center (CIRC) at the University of Alabama, Birming-

ham, is known world-wide for its cutting-edge research in the treatment of develop-

mental disabilities, and Civitan contributes hundreds of thousands of dollars each year

to that research. Last year, CIRC was able to “leverage” our contributions almost 100-

fold by using those funds to hire young post-doctoral researchers, who then brought in

millions of dollars in research grants. Currently, this research is focused on a wide

range of disabilities, such as autism, Downs Syndrome, and Alzheimer’s Disease.

4. Civitan clubs in many foreign countries provide citizens of newly independent nations

the opportunity to “practice” democratic principles on a small scale by electing officers

for fixed terms, participating in structured club meetings, and having a voice in the de-

cision-making process.

These are just a few inspiring facts about Civitan. I very much enjoyed seeing so many of you

at your District Convention and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Or-

leans in Las Vegas, Feb. 8-10, for our Region 8 Meeting.

Cresta Loma Golf & Civitan, Tucson

President: Carl Mangelsdorf III, [email protected], (C) 520-237-2225

Cresta Loma was represented at the International Golf Benefit by Carl in a wild pat-riotic outfit and Eric Holyoak. Over $3000 was given to International from clubs and individuals in some Arizona clubs. Their team was #2 this year and looking forward

to taking back the trophy as #1 in 2018 in Reno! They made donations to Sno-Do and the PS Club. A team of 4 partici-pated in a benefit for a local family at El Rio. The club is sending two teams of 4 to golf in the Lura Turner Homes Tour-nament in Phoenix in September. They anticipate a small gain in membership for the Centennial year.

Arizona Clubs

London Bridge Civitan Club, Lake Havasu

Co-Presidents: Vicki Gwynne, [email protected], Chris Bergen, [email protected]

Special Olympics Summer Season is in high gear with practices weekly for softball, swimming, bocce, golf, and bowling. Many of the coaches are London Bridge members! They are selling Football Books as a fundraiser. Mary and Ken Ellis represented the club at International Con-vention in Birmingham. Chris and Don Bergen attended the District Convention in Tucson. FAQ: 17 years ago, Christ Bergen was installed at District Governor at the International Convention in Oslo, Norway! Vicki Gwynne and Chris Bergen are continuing as Co-Presidents for 2017-18.

Metro Phoenix Civitan Club, Phoenix

President: Larry Lake, (C) 602-903-5623

Phoenix Bird Civitan Club, Phoenix

President: Esther Alper, [email protected], 602-943-4789

Most activities of these two clubs are combined. In the last quarter this club has worked hard with the Phoenix Bird Club as they

do every summer. They help at the end of year Bowling party and then Mary Grace Oakes shares her birthday with the two clubs. We had a record number of members attend this year.

Metro helped to get 6 Phoenix Bird club members to Birmingham for the International Convention along with 5 mem-bers of Metro. Then Metro supported their Governor-Elect Deborah Maddox at our District Convention. The Bird club had camp up at Whispering Hope camp and had a great time. Both clubs will start up in the end of September with joint Installations on October 2nd at Crossroads Church. Plans for building 2 more wheelchair ramps are in the making for the new year. Because the Metro President is currently working in New Zealand, the Past President and President-elect will be running the meetings.

Metro is selling Football books as a fundraiser. Other clubs are welcome to join in this. Contact Metro for the details.

Roadrunner Civitan Club, Tucson

President: Dotty Woody, [email protected], (C) 520-250-2025

Summer has been pretty quiet with many members traveling. In August, members of Roadrunner, PS Club and Academy of Tucson High School Jr. Civitan Club joined to-gether to complete Linus Blankets and raise funds for CIRC by eating at Fuddruckers. Ten blankets were completed that night, with a total of 27 being given to the Linus

Project in Tucson. Supplies are being collected to send to victims of Hurricane Harvey. Books were taken to Catalina Village to add to their library. Officer Installation will be held with PS Club on September 25 and that is always a great celebration!

Sun Cities Civitan Club, Sun City

President: Arlene Wilcox, 623-815-9080

Two members assisted with registration at the District convention in Tucson. Thanks, ladies! During the summer the club does not meet. They are making plans for the Fall.

The Old Pueblo Civitan Club, Tucson

President: Sharon Allen, [email protected], (H)520-744-8814

Old Pueblo continues to hold their monthly dance for adults with disabilities at Armory Park near downtown Tucson.

The Phil Schlesinger Civitan Club, Tucson

President: Elsa Carpio, (C) 520-850-5610

Some members are preparing for a bocce tournament coming up soon at Reid Park in Tucson. Sixteen members attended the District Convention in Tucson, a great support for their Governor, Lyn Barefoot. Ian Barefoot received the Civi-tan of the Year Award at the District Convention. Congratulations, Ian! An area meeting was held at a University of Arizona baseball game and it was HOT! As part of their goal to reach some 100s to celebrate the Centennial, they donated over 200 toys to Toys for Tots. Officer Installation is always an exciting event

and will be held on Monday, September 25 at the Shriners with Carl Mangelsdorf doing the MC work, as usual.

Nevada Clubs

Civitan Club On The Greens, Las Vegas, President: Michael Ry-der, [email protected], (H) 702-513-2778

They had members participate in the International Golf Benefit. Members are providing Special Olympics coaching for golf and basketball. They worked at the National Rodeo and a rugby event as fundraisers. They are working on building up their membership.

Lovely Ladies Civitan Club, Las Vegas, President: Barbara Kneale, [email protected], (H) 702-287-8611

Three members attended the District Convention in Tucson. The club donat-ed over 100 greeting cards to St. Jude’s. $250 in new men’s socks, underwear and T-shirts were given to the Las Vegas Rescue Mission. Some summer fun was had by members at the Super Summer Theater at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. They held a birthday party for a person turning 100, made decorations for hospice, assisted at Peggy’s Attic that provides clothes for children in foster care and assisted the Susan G Komen Foundation run.

Bannock Civitan Club, Pocatello, President: Terry Fredrick-son

Summer in Pocatello means Revive at 5, sponsored by Bannock Civitan, which received the Reader’s Choice Local Event Award from The Idaho State Jour-nal! They had a great turnout for their annual leadership camp for high school students. $1500 for 100 turkeys was given to the Idaho Food Bank. Staffing and running Camp Taylor is another annual summer event for Bannock Civi-tans. In July, they prepared a free lunch for the hungry at Trinity Episcopal

Church’s My Brother’s Table. This is a quarterly project for them. Also in July, they held Civitan Night at the Gate City Grays Baseball game. Great publicity!

Over 100 backpacks were filled and distributed to elementary, middle school and high school students that are in fos-ter care.

At the Centennial convention, the International Golf Benefit had some Bannock members on the links raising money for CIRC. Bannock also received TWO International Awards: 3rd Place for Social Media and 1st Place for Outstanding Service to People with Disabilities. CONGRATULATIONS! Check out the District Award list in this newsletter for their numerous District awards.

The Bannock Civitan and Bud Light Golf Tournament was held Aug. 20. During the Pocatello Marathon, they will be staffing two water stations.

Idaho Clubs

Friends Civitan Club, Pocatello, President: Caitlin Meyer

Members of the Friends have been selling soda and water at Revive at 5. They also sold Centennial coozies which they donated for the goodie bags at District Convention. Members joined some Bannock members to walk in Relay for Life in June. School supplies were collected for a backpack project and donated items to Head Start. They went to Camp Taylor and had a great time! Several members attended District Convention in Tucson, giving them enough miles to win the award for the most miles traveled to the convention.

Hearts & Hands Civitan Club, Idaho Falls, President: Ortencia Cervantes

Members of Hearts & Hands have been selling water and sodas at Alive After 5 and volunteer at the local animal shel-ter. They made door hangers for veterans and blessing bags for the local Crisis Center.

Idaho Falls Civitan Club, Idaho Falls, President: Tami Holmes, [email protected], (C) 208-351-2056

Members of Idaho Falls cooked for the Guns and Hoses baseball game (police and firemen, just in case you were wondering), participated in some fun runs for other groups, worked at the rodeo, and held their weekly BIG fundraiser, Alive After 5. Virginia McAfee, incoming Governor-Elect and member of the Idaho Falls Club, fell and broke her foot at District convention. Hopefully, she is healing quickly and will be back on both feet soon!

Twisted Stitchers Civitan Club, Pocatello, President: Karen Barker, [email protected], (C) 208-220-0856

The Twisted Stitchers knit hats for backpacks for children in foster care and made baby hats for the neonatal ICU. They don’t meet during the summer but will have busy hands again starting in September!
