CHARLES A. HOLADAY, Johnson County. Committed to the peni­tentiary at Fort Madison on the 12th day or December, 1902, to serve a term of life, for the crime of murder se?ond degree. Upon recom­mendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of thirty-three years in said penitentiary. Commutation was executed on the 22nd day of December, 1917.

WILLIAM WEBSTER, Polk County. Committed to the penitentiary at Fort Madison on the 27th day of October, 1909, to serve a term of lite, for the crime of murder second degree. Upon recommendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of thirty years in said penitentiary. Commutation was executed on the 22nd day of Decem­ber, 1917.

THOMAS Y. HOSKINSON, Muscatine County. Committed to the peni· tentiary at Fort Madison on the 2nd day of January, 1912, to serve a term of life, for the crime of murder second degree. U pon the recom­mendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of sixteen years in said penitentiary. Commutation was executed on tbe 22nd day of December, 1917.

M. c. A VERY, Lyon County. Committed to the penitentiary at Fort Madison, on the 21st day of October, 1916, to serve a term of life, for the crime of rape. Upon recommendation of tbe Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of ten years in said penitentiary. Commutation was executed on the 21st day of January, 1918.

BETSY SMITH, Polk County. Committed to tbe reformatory at Ana­mosa on the 30th day of June, 1894, to serve a ter m of liCe, for the crime of murder first degree. Upon recommendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of fifty-five years in said r eformatory. Commutation was executed on the 24th day of January, 1918.

GEORGE WRIGHT, Muscatine County. Committed to the penitentiary at Fort Madison on the 7th day of May, 1900, to serve a term of l ife, for the crime of murder first decree. Upon recommendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of fifty years in said penl· tentiary. Commutation was executed on the 24th day or January, 1918.

ALICE McC~RL, Cerro Gordo County. Committed to the reformatory at Anamosa on the 29th day of September, 1914, to serve a term of five years, for the crime of keeping bouse of tll fame. Upon recommendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of three years, seven months and twenty-two days solid time ln said reformatory. Commutation was executed on the 18th day of May, 1918.

WILLIAM R. POTTER, Mills County. Committed to the penitentiary at Fort Madison on the 14th day of October, 1912, to serve a term of flft.een years, for the crime of uttering a forged Instrument. Upon recom· mendation of the Board or Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of ten years In said penitentiary. Commutation was executed on the 12th day of July, 1918.

L. R. VAN TASSEL, Chickasaw County. Committed to the penitentiary at Fort Madison to serve a term of llfe, for the crime of murder first

degree. Upon recommendation ot the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of tlrty-five years in said penitentiary. Commutation was executed on the 23rd day of November, 1918.

JOHN H. CATER, Fayette County. Committed to the penitentiary at Anamosa on the 17th day of July, 1897, to serve a term or life, for tbe crime of murder first degree. Upon recommendation of the Board of Farole, sentence was commuted to a term of fifty-five years in said reformatory. Commutation was executed on the 25th day of November, 1918.

WILLIAM LUCAS, Page County. Committed to tbe penitentiary at Fort Madison on the 2nd day of October, 1902, to serve a term of life, for the crime of murder first degree. Upon recommendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of fifty years In said peni· tentiary. Commutation was executed on the 26th day of November, 1918.

1\IIKE HALEN, Fayette County. Committed to the penitentiary at Fort Madison on the 22nd day of April, 1909, to serve a term or life, for the crime of murder second degree. Upon recommendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of thirty years in said peni­tentiary. Commutation was executed on the 27th day of November, 1918.

HENRY BINNING, Clay County. Committed to tho penitentiary at Fort Madison on the 15th day of July, 1916, to serve a term of life, for the crime of rape. Upon recommendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was com131uted to a term of ten years in said penitentiary. Commutation was executed on the 2nd day of December, 1918.

LOREN FRUSH, Warren County. Committed to the penitentiary at Fort Madison, on tbe 6th day of April, 1917, to serve a term of life, for the crime of rape. Upon recommendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of ten years in said penitentiary. Commutation was executed on the 2nd day of December, 1918.

STEPHEN HYDE, Clinton County. Committed to the penitentiary at Fort Madison on the 20th day of June, 1916, to serve a term of life, for the crime of having carnal knowledge of an imbecile female. Upon the recom­mendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of fifteen years in said Penitentiary. Commutation was executed on the 2nd day of December, 1918.

JOHN RIDGEWAY, Keokuk County, Committed to tbe penitentiary at Fort Madison on the 17th day December, 1914, to serve a term of life, for the crime of rape. Upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of twenty-five years in said penitentiary. Commutation was executed on the lOth day of December, l!ll8.

JOHN HOLMES, Pottawattamie County. Committed to the penitentiary at Fort Madison on the 17th day of April, 1913, to serve a term of life for the crime of placing obstructions on the track of a railroad. Upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, sentence was commuted to a term of thirty years In said penitentiary. Commutation was executed on the lOth day of December, 1918.

JOHN OAINS, Bremer County. Convicted at the November term, 19H, of the oiTense of possessing burglar tools, and sentenced to scr·ve an in­determinate term, not to exceed five years, In the reformatory. This suspension was granted upon the r·ecommendation or the Board or Parole, and thereunder the said John Gains was to enter the employment or relatives In the State of Missouri. Suspension was Issued on the 4lh day of January, 1917.

OSCAR LARSON, Carroll County. Convicted at the December term, 1909, or · the oiiense of aggravated burglarly, and sentenced to serve an indeterminate term, not to exceed twenty years, In the peu!tentlary, anrl who was s ubsequently transferred to the reformatory. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and there­unuer the said Oscar Larson was returned to his native country of Sweden. Suspension was Issued on the 1st day of February. 1917.

,WILLTAI\1 CARSTENS, Woodbury County. Convicted at the September term, 1913, of the olfense or assaul t with Intent to commit a felony, and sentenced to serve an Indeterminate term, not to exceed ftve years, In the reformatory. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said William Carstens was per­mitted to go to East Helena. Montana. to enter the employment of rela­thes on a rarm. Suspension was Issued on the 3rd day or February, 1917.

rAUL HAWLEY, Dubuque County. Convlctc>!l at the June term, 1!>12, or the orrense or obtaining money by false pretense, and sentencer\ to serve an Indetermi nate term, not to exceed seven years In the penltenllary. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board or Parole, and thereunder the said Paul Hawley was permitted to go t o Owensburg, Kentucky, to enter Into employment which bad been arranged for by the Board of Parole. Suspension was issued on the Glb day of March, 1917.

ED GIBSON, Polk County. Convicted at the November term, 1914, of the orrense of breaking and enter ing, and sentenced to serve an in· determinate term, not to exceed ten years, In the reformatory. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the pres iding Judge and County Attorney before commitment, and thereunder the said Ed Gibson was placed under the direction and supervision of the Board of Parole. Suspension was Issued on the 24th day of March, 1917.

CARL McCUNE, Polk County. Convicted at the November te rm, 1914, or the orrense of breaking and enter ing, and sentenced to serve an In­determinate term, not to exceed ten years in the reformatory. This sus­pension was granted upon the recommendation or the presiding Judge and County Attorney before commllment, and thereunder the said Carl McCune was placed under the direction and supervision of the Board of Parole. Suspension was Issued on the 24th day of March, 1917.

HUGH S. BEST, Warren County. Convicted at the January term, 1916, of the orrense of larceny, and sentenced to serve an indetermina te t erm,

not to exceed five years In the reformatory, under which judgment h~ was paroled before commitment by the Board of Parole. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole to permit the said Hugh S. Best to report Cor duty under his previous enlistment wltb the First l\lachlne Gun Company, Iowa National Ouard, In response to the call Cor mobilization of troops, issued by the President of the United States. Suspension was Issued on the 26th day or March, 1917.

MARGUERITE DENNY, Lynn County. Convicted at the January term, 1916, of the otrense or assault with Intent to commit great bodily Injury, and sentenced to serve an Indeterminate term, not to exceed one year, in t'be reformatory. This suspension Is granted upon the recommendation or the Board or Parole, and thereunder the said Marguerite Denny was permitted to return to her husband In Kansas City, Missouri. Suspension was Issued on the 30th day of March, 1917.

LOU DORAN, Woodbury County. Convicted at the November term, 1914, of the offense of conspiracy, and sen tenced to serve an indeterminate term, not to exceed three years, In the reformatory. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder tbe said Lou Doran entered t he employment or the Cudahy Packing Company at Salt Lake City, Utah. Suspension Issued on the 11th day of April, 1917.

WILLIA.l\1 BOTENGA, Pottawattamle County. Convicted at the Novem­bl..r term, 1910, of the offense of uttering a forged Instrument, and sentenced to serve an Indeterminate term, not to exceed fifteen years, In the reform­atory. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said William Botenga was returned to Hol· land, under the direction or the Cc;>nsul-General of the Netherlands. Sus· pension was Issued on tho 14th day of April, 1917.

HENRY WASHINGTON, Fayette County. Convicted at the November term, 1914, of the offense or larceny, and sentenced to serve an Indeter­minate term, not to exceed five years, In the penitentiary. Tbls suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, for t he purpose of returning the said Henry Washington to the state penitentiary at Lansing, Kansas. Suspension was issued on the 24th day of AprJl, 1917.

J ESSE BECK, Polk County. Convicted at the November term, 1914, of the offense or breaking and entering, and sentenced to serve an Indeter­minate term, not to exceed ten years, In t he reformatory. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the presiding Judge and County Attorney, before commitment, and thereunder the said Jesse Beck was placed under the direction and supervision of the Board of Parole. Sus· pension was Issued on the 27th day of April, 1917.

H. H. DUNKIN, Page County. Convicted at the September term, 1915, of the offense of cheating by fal se pretenses, and sentenced to serve an indeterminate term, not to exceed seven years, In the penitentiary. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said H. H. Dunkin returned to his home In tbe state ot Missouri. Suspension was Issued on the 23rd day of 1\fay, 1917.

Convicted at the l\lay term, 1913, of the offense of rape, and sentenced to serve a term of life, which sentence was, on the 4th day oC September, 1914, commuted to a term or fifteen years In the penitentiary. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board oC Parole, and thereunder the said Charles Smith wa!; dellvllred to the authorities of the State of Illinois for tbe purpose of returning him to the state penitentiary at Joliet. Suspension was Issued on the 3rd day of November, 1917.

FRANZ MEYER, Polk County. Convicted at the September term, 1914, of the offense of abduction and sentenced to serve an Indeterminate term, not to exceed ten years, in the penitentiary. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said Franz Meyer was permitted to go to Colorado for his health. the statement of the prison physician being that he Is tubercular. HOWARD GUERNSER, Pottawattamle County. Convicted at the May term, 1916, of the offense or forgery, and sentenced to serve an Indeter­minate term, not to exceed ten years, In the penitentiary. This sus­pension was granted upon the recommendation oC the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said Howard Guernser was delivered to the authorities of the state of Kansas for the purpose of returning him to the state peni· tentlary at Lansing. Suspension was Issued on the 24th day oC January, 1!118.

Convicted at the June term, 1916, of the CJrl.ense or assault with Intent to rob, and sentenced to serve an lndeter· minale term, not to exceed five years, In the reformatory. This sus· pens.lon was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said Ed Dorsey was placed under the supervision oC his brother at Ridott, Illinois. Suspension was Issued on the 25th day -;:f January, 1918.

GUY BROWN, Woodbury County. Convicted at the March term, 1916, or the offense or larceny, and sentenced to serve an Indeterminate term, not to exceed five years, in the reformatory. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation or the Board or Parole, and thereunder the so.id Guy Brown went to the home of his sister In Omaha, Nebraska, he having a seriously crippled hand which made It Impossible to place him under regular parole employment. Suspension was Issued on the 26th day or February, 1918.

WILLIAM JONES, Johnson County. Convicted at the October term, 1905, of the offense of murder, second degree, and sentenced to serve a term of liCe, 1n the penitentiary, which sentence was, on the 6th day of June, 1916. commuted to thirty-five years, and under which the said W1111am Jones was, on the 25th day or May, 1917, paroled by the Board of Parole. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation or the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said William Jones went to the home of his brother at Grand Island, Nebraska., he having submitted to an operation which incapacitated him for active employment under his parole. Sus­pension was Issued on the 26th day of February, 1918.

BERT McGRAW, Fremont County. Convicted at the June term, 1916, of the offense of larceny, and sentenced to servo an indeterminate term, not to exceed five years, In the reformatory. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board oC Parole, and thereunder the said Bert McGraw went to the home of his uncle at Edge Hlll, Missouri, who rrovided a home, and such employment as the physical condition of the eald Bert McGraw permitted him to engage In, be being tubercular. Sus­pension was Issued on the 13th day of March, 1918.

Convicted at the October term, 1916, of the offense of cheating by false pretenses, and sentenced to serve an indeterminate term not to exceed seven years, in the penitentiary. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board or Parole, and thereunder the said Raymond Phileau enlisted in the Canadian Army. Suspension was issued on the 4th day or March, 1918.

GEORGE DAVIS, Shelby County. Convicted at the November term, 1915, of the offense of breaking and entering, and sentenced to serve an indeterminate term, not to exceed ten years, in the reformatory. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said George Davis was delivered to the Unlted .States Department of Labor, Immlgl'ation Service, for the purpose of deportation to the Republic of Mexico. Suspension was issued on the 21st day of March, 1918.

JOHN w. BROWN, Scott County. Convicted at the November term, 1916, of the offense of conspiracy, and sentenced to serve an indeterminate term, not to exceed three years, in the penitentiary. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and there­under the said John W. Brown entered the employment of relatives at Boston, Massachusetts. Suspension was issued on the 20th day of April, 19lB.

J. W. REAVES, Scott County. Convicted at the November term, 1916, of the offense of conspiracy, and sentenced to serve an Indeterminate term, not to exceed three years, in the penitentiary. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board o! Parole. and thereunder the said J. W. Reaves was placed under the supervision of Judge Chauncey I<ruger at Saint Louis, Missouri. Suspen.sion was issued on the 22nd day of April, 1918.

C. E. MILLING, Louisa County. Convicted at the Apt•il term, 1916, of the offense of obtaining money by false pretenses, and sentenced to serve an indeterminate term, not to exceed seven years, in the penitentiary. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said C. E. Milling was delivered to the United States Immigration Service for the purpose of deportation. Suspension was issued on the 25th day of April, 1918.

JOE WILSON, Cerro Gordo County. Convicted at the September term, 1911>, of the offense of larceny, and sentenced to serve an indeterminate term, not to exceed five years, in the reformatory. Thts suspension was granted upon the recommendation or the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said Joe Wilson was placed under the supervision of Honorable Walter C. Goodson at Macon, Missouri, he being physically unable to enter employ· ment under regular parole agreement. Suspension was issued on the 24th day of June, 1918.

ROBERT SMITH, Woodbury County. Convicted at the May term, 1916, of the offense of manslaughter, and sentenced to serve an Indeterminate term, not to exceed eight years, In the penitentiary. This suspension was

granted upon the recommendation of the. Board of Parole, and thereunder the said Robert Smith returned to his home at Russellville, Kentucy. Suspension was issued on the 28th day of June, 1918.

HAROLD WARD, Scott County. Convicted at the November term, 1916, of the offense of conspiracy, and sentenced to serve an indeterminate term, not to exceed three years, in the penitentiary. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said Harold Ward entered into employment in Chicago, Illinois. Suspension was issued on the 5th day of July, 1918.

CARL LARSON, Webster County. Convicted at the November term, 1913, of the offense of breaking and entering, and sentenced to serve an indeterminate term, not to exceed ten years, in the reformatory. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said Carl Larson entered upon employment at Albert Lea, Minnesota. Suspension was Issued on the 12th day of July, 1918.

T. M. SAUNDERS, Polk County. Convicted at the September term, 1917, of the offense of larceny of poultry, and sentenced to serve an in­determinate term, not to exceed two years, in the penitentiary. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said T. M. Saunders was released to the authoriUes of the state of Missouri, for the purpose of prosecution. Suspension was issued on the 26th day of July, 1918.

WILLIAM DENNIS, Pottawattamle County. Convicted at the May term, 1912, of the offense of robbery, and sentenced to serve an indeter­minate term, not to exceed ten years, in the reformatory, subseQuently transferred to Fort Madison. This suspension was granted upon the recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said William Dennis went to the home of his brother at Westport, South Dakota, to enter into tarm employment. Suspension was issued on the 30th day of July, 1918.

WILLIAM MOODY, Iowa County. Convicted at the June term, 1916, of the offense of breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny, and sAntenced to serve an indeterm!nate term, not to exceed ten years, in the reformatory. This suspension was granted upon recommendation of the Board of Parole, and thereunder the said William Moody was released to the authorities of the state of Texas, !rom whom he escaped. Suspension was issued on the 8th day of August, 1918.

mended by those officers in the counties where the flues were imposed who are concerned directly or Indirectly Jn the collection of the same, namely, t he county attorney, county auditor, clerk of t he district court, county treasurer and the members of the Board of Supervisors, or a majority of them, and were conditioned upon the payment of all costs when same had not been paid.
