Independent Micro-Organism Experiment

How bread will mould when pop drinks are

poured on it.

By Sydney Chow

The purpose is to see if carbonation really does

prevent mould to grow or slow down the

process for the mould to grow.

Purpose

Variables

My variables are how I pour pop drinks onto bread.

How I controlled my experiment

I controlled my experiment by taking one slice of bread

and barley touch, it I put the bread in a Ziploc bag and

keep it in one spot.

If carbonation protects bread from getting mouldy then I assume that the

Gatorade will mould the fastest because there is no carbonation to protect it.

Hypothesis

Equipment /Materials

Dempsters Whole Grain Wheat Bread, Lemonade,

Orange Crush, Coke-Cola, Sprite, Gatorade, and 5

plastic Ziploc bags.

Procedure

On each piece of bread add a pop drink on it and have one piece of bread not tampered with and call it control. For each pop drink add 3 spoons of the pop drink. Then put it in a plastic Ziploc bag. Then each 3 days take pictures of the bread and write about how the mould has grown.

Day 1( Sun. 11. Dec. 2011)

These are the pictures of the control piece of bread and the

bread with the pop drinks on the first day of the experiment.

Day 2 (Wed. 14. Dec. 2011)

Nothing has happened to the control and all the breads with the pop

drinks.

Day 3 (Sat. 17. Dec. 2011)

Nothing has happened to the control and any of the breads with the pop

drinks.

Day 4 ( Thurs. 20. Dec. 2011)

Nothing has happened to the control and any of the breads with pop drink.

Day 5( Fri . 23. Dec. 2011)

Mould has grown on the bread with coke . Nothing has happened to the control

or the other breads with pop drinks.

Day 6( Mon. 26. Dec. 2011)

The mould has increased and the percentage of the bread is now 33% and the

mould has now grown a lot. Nothing has happened to the control or the other

breads with pop drinks.

Day 7( Thurs. 29. Dec. 2011)

Mould percentage with the bread and coke is now 85% and the mould has now

grown a humongous amount of mould. Nothing has happened to the control or

any of the other breads with pop drinks.

Conclusion

My hypothesis was that the Gatorade with the bread would mould the fastest. My results did not support my hypothesis. In conclusion my results led up to the Coca-Cola to mould the fastest and create the most mould.

New Understanding/Further Inquiries

In the future I may involve testing the bread with different climates or changing the variable into fruits to see if it would mould; instead of using pop drinks.
