Welcome — Click here to watch a greeting from Aaron to help begin your time of worship.

Call to Worship—Psalm 34:1–3 (ESV)  LEADER: 1 I will bless the LORD at all times;   his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

2 My soul makes its boast in the LORD;   let the humble hear and be glad.   ALL: 3 Oh, magnify the LORD with me,

and let us exalt his name together!

Prayers of Adoration— [Allow for a brief time of open prayer following the prompt]

(Leader) Let’s pray together to our God, our bread of life.

Confession of Faith— The Apostles’ Creed

(Leader) Let’s lift our voices and confess our faith together.  I believe in God the Father Almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From there he shall come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen

Song of Praise —Be Thou My Vision  Verse 1: Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best Thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light.

Verse 2: Be Thou my Wisdom, and Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I Thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.

Verse 3: Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise, Thou mine Inheritance, now and always: Thou and Thou only, first in my heart, High King of Heaven, my Treasure Thou art.

Verse 4: High King of Heaven, my victory won, May I reach Heaven’s joys, O bright Heaven’s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my Vision, O Ruler of all.

(Leader) As we praise our God, we also remember that none but Jesus can do helpless sinners good. He loves us and grants us forgiveness. So, let’s confess our sins to God, both together aloud and individually in silence.

Corporate Confession of Sin

ALL:  Lord, we come to you knowing that we are sinners and yet not knowing the half of it. But Lord, our hope is not in our confession, but in your kindness and mercy. May your kindness and mercy set us free to be honest with You and with ourselves. Forgive us for the ways we have sinned this week in thought, word, and deed. Forgive us for our failures to love and for our making excuses for our failures to love. Thank you that you invite us to come before You, not because we repent so well, but because You love so well! And so we ask for forgiveness in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen

Silent Confession—[allow 45–60 seconds for people to confess silently]

(Leader) Lift up your heads and your hearts, and hear what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for you:

Assurance of Pardon—Romans 8:31–34 (ESV)

LEADER:  31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33 Who shall bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. 34

Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died — more than that, who was raised — who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us.

Song of Response—Who is This So Weak and Helpless?  Verse 1: Who is this, so weak and helpless,   child of lowly Hebrew maid,   Rudely in a stable sheltered,   Coldly in a manger laid?   ’Tis the Lord of all creation,  Who this wondrous path has trod; He is Lord from everlasting, And to everlasting God.

Verse 2: Who is this, a Man of Sorrows, Walking sadly life’s hard way, Homeless, weary, sighing, weeping Over sin and Satan’s sway? ’Tis our God, our glorious Savior, Who above the starry sky Is for us a place preparing, Where no tear can dim the eye.

Verse 3: Who is this? Behold him shedding Drops of blood upon the ground! Who is this, despised, rejected, Mocked, insulted, beaten, bound? ’Tis our God, Who gifts and graces On His church is pouring down; Who shall smite in holy vengeance All His foes beneath His throne.

Verse 4: Who is this that hangs there dying While the rude world scoffs and scorns, Numbered with the malefactors, Torn with nails, and crowned with thorns? ’Tis our God Who lives forever ’Mid the shining ones on high, In the glorious golden city, Reigning everlastingly.

Scripture Passage—Luke 10:25–37 (NIV)

25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”  26 “What is written in the Law?” he replied. “How do you read it?”

27 He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

28 “You have answered correctly,” Jesus replied. “Do this and you will live.”

29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”  30 In reply Jesus said: “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.  32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.’   36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

37 The expert in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.”  Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

(Leader) Having heard and received God’s Word, we now approach him in prayerful response. Let’s come boldly before his throne of grace together, making our requests known to God and bearing the burdens of our church and our world in prayer.

Prayers of Intercession  LEADER:  Gracious and heavenly Father, we come to you with our joys and sorrows, hopes and fears. Thank you for opening the door to us and listening.   Father, help us to love our neighbors the way we are called to by your Son, Jesus. Remind us that even though we see difference and feel tension with our neighbors, each one of them is made in Your image. Compel us to love them and serve them with grace and mercy.

In your mercy, Lord: Hear our prayer.   Father God, throughout the Scriptures you give us clear warnings in relation to loving our neighbor. You warn against focusing so much on personal piety while neglecting the needs of our neighbors. You warn against coming up with excuses to justify ourselves, while our neighbor suffers. You warn against creating systems and structures that may look religious and seem right, yet become the very means by which we pad ourselves from suffering and alienate our neighbors. Give us courage to heed these warnings and repent when we are tempted and sin. Give us strength to love and serve our neighbors with grace and mercy.

In your mercy, Lord: Hear our prayer.

Oh gracious God, we are tired of the coronavirus. It is easy to lose heart and be discouraged. We pray for those who are ill, and for those caring for the sick. We pray for those who struggle with depression, that you would grace them with comfort and encouragement. We pray for those without steady employment. We pray for our children and all the children in our city who are trying to learn in a virtual, isolated environment and with so much volatility and uncertainty. This isn’t too big for you . . . but it is so easy to feel overwhelmed.

In your mercy, Lord: Hear our prayer.   Thank you for your love for City Church. You’ve been so gracious to us during this season of a pastor transition. Yet we feel the gaps in our church and anxiously await who you have in store for us as a Lead Pastor, and the leaders you will continue to cultivate and grow in our midst. Give us contentment and remembrance of your care right now, and when we are anxious, fearful, or tired, compel us to pray. To pray for our search committee and their families. To pray for our leaders and ministries. To pray for the pastor you are preparing to bring to City Church.

In your mercy, Lord: Hear our prayer.

We also pray for the many churches around us — we are not alone! You are at work around us, and we lift up the ministry and witness of your people throughout our neighborhoods and our city. We lift up Pastor Harris and First Baptist Church of South Inglewood, and we pray for Midtown Fellowship East. We pray for repentant faith to increase in our city, and for renewal and repair to follow.

In your mercy, Lord: Hear our prayer.

[Allow time now for open prayer about these or any other cares]   LEADER:  Father, we ask for much. But we ask in confidence, knowing that we come bearing the

name of the one who is able to do far more than we can ask or imagine, your Son Jesus Christ. And now, as he has taught us, we boldly pray:

The Lord’s Prayer

ALL:  Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

Song of Praise —In Christ Alone    Verse 1: In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song. This cornerstone, this solid ground, firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, when fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my all in all, here in the love of Christ I stand.

Verse 2: In Christ alone, who took on flesh, fullness of God in helpless babe. This gift of love and righteousness, scorned by the ones he came to save. Till on that cross where Jesus died, the wrath of God was satisfied. For every sin on Him was laid; here in the death of Christ I live.

Verse 3: There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain. Then bursting forth in glorious day, up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory, sin’s curse has lost its grip on me. For I am His, and He is mine, bought with the precious blood of Christ.

Verse 4: No guilt in life, no fear in death; this is the pow’r of Christ in me. From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny. No pow’r of hell, no scheme of man, can ever pluck me from His hand. Till He returns or calls me home; Here in the pow’r of Christ I’ll stand.

Dismissal LEADER:  Let us go forth to serve the world as those who know the love of our Lord and Savior,

Jesus Christ.

ALL: Thanks be to God!

(Leader) Now receive the Lord’s blessing as you go:  Closing Blessing —Jude 24–25 (ESV) LEADER:  24 Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before

the presence of his glory with great joy, 25 to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.

   Sermon Reflection Questions

1. How did the sermon tonight transform your view of this parable?  2. In what ways is Jesus the True Good Samaritan?  3. How can this help you move into uncomfortable places where you need to show love to others in your

own life?

Communion

Please note that we will no longer be offering the Lord’s Supper at Dalewood United Methodist Church after the Sunday morning worship service.

  Guidance & Suggestions

In terms of how to proceed with this liturgy, feel free to assign parts depending on your circumstances. However, we would make the following suggestions:

● Select a leader who will read the “LEADER” parts. Everyone else should read the “ALL” parts. ● There are words in italics before many of the headings to help the leader frame what we are

about to do in worship. Don’t feel bound to repeat them verbatim, but let them be a help as you lead.

● For the Prayers of Intercession, the leader (or someone else) will pray the written prayers and when he or she says, “In your mercy, Lord” it will be a prompt for everyone to respond, “Hear our prayer.” Then there will be a time of open prayer before the Lord’s Prayer.

● For the songs, we have included the lyrics in the printed liturgy. We tried to choose songs familiar enough to you that you can sing simple a cappella or play them on a guitar or piano (and provided chord charts at the end of this document for that purpose). Please choose whatever is easiest for your group, but we would ask you to sing. Even if it feels a bit awkward in such a small group, it is a beautiful comfort to sing our faith with one another.

● Even though we are not gathered physically this morning, we can experience spiritual unity through the same liturgy, prayers, scripture readings, sermon and songs.

   Tips for Worshiping with Children

For those with small children worshiping alongside them:

● Even if they don't understand or participate in everything, their hearts are being formed by taking part in the weekly act of worship and observing parents, siblings, and other believers singing, praying, listening, and giving their hearts to the Lord. Worshiping with the church (even at home) is one of God’s instruments to help them grow in their faith.

● Be patient with their squirms, “whispers,” and moving around during worship. You may even consider giving them things to occupy their hands (blocks, magnatiles, coloring) while their ears and eyes continue to soak in what is going on around them.

● Don’t be afraid to slow down and explain things as you go. That is an opportunity we don’t normally have in worship that you will have in these much smaller groups. Take advantage, to better help engage them in the long-run.

● Utilize whatever resources you see fit to help them participate during this time. If you think playing a Rain for Roots song instead of singing “It Is Well” will help their engagement, then do that. If you think a break is needed between the sermon and Prayers of Intercession, take one.

● Lastly, have patience. Habits form slowly. This is not the last time you will get to teach them how to worship God. Their growth will be slow just like all of ours. Pray that the Holy Spirit would move and work in them even as he does so in small increments.
