All May God be our strength and our song.

Bishop This is the day that Christ the Lamb of Godgave himself into the hands of those who would slay him. This is the day that Christ gathered with his disciples in the upper room. This is the day that Christ took a towel and washed the disciples’ feet, giving us an example that we should do to others as he has done to us.This is the day that Christ our God gave us this holy feast, that we who eat this bread and drink this cup may here proclaimhis Holy Sacrice and be partakers of his resurrection, and at the last day may reign with him in heaven.

Bishop Fellow servants of our Lord Jesus Christ, on the night before his death,Jesus set an example for his disciples by washing their feet, an act of humble service.By doing this he demonstrated that strength and growth in the life of God’s kingdomcomes not by power, authority or even miracle but by such lowly service. Therefore, I invite you who have been appointed as representatives of the congregationand who share in the royal priesthood of Christ, to come forward, that I may recall whose servant I am by following the example of my Master. But come remembering his admonition that what will be done for youis also to be done by you to others, for “a servant is not greater than his master, nor is one who is sent greater than the one who sent him.If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.”

The Great Thanksgiving

9

Bishop The Lord be with you.All And also with you.

Bishop Lift up your hearts. All We lift them to the Lord.

Bishop Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Bishop Blessed are you, gracious God, creator of heaven and earth;we give you thanks and praise through Jesus Christ our Lord, who for our salvation became obedient unto death. The tree of defeat became the tree of victory:where life was lost, life has been restored. Therefore with angels and archangels and all the heavenly chorus,we cry out to proclaim the glory of your name:

Sanctus Choir (Canterbury Mass) Edmund Rubbra

Bishop We give thanks to you, Lord our God,for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation;in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets;and above all in the Word made esh, Jesus your Son.For in these last days you sent himto be incarnate from the Virgin Mary,to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you.In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.On this very night, when he was handed over to suering and death,a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread;and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you.Do this for the remembrance of me.”After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks,

10

he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”Therefore, Father, according to his command,

All we remember his death,we proclaim his resurrection,we await his coming in glory;

Bishop and we oer our sacrice of praise and thanksgiving to you,Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christand his blood of the new covenant.Unite us to your Son in his sacrice, that we, made acceptable in him,may be sanctied by the Holy Spirit. In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new,and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters;through Jesus Christ our Lord, the rstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever.

All Amen.

The Lord’s PrayerBishop As our Saviour taught us, let us pray,All Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven.Give us today our daily bread.Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

Breaking of the Bread

11

Bishop We break this bread,All communion in Christ’s body once broken.

Bishop Let your Church be the wheat which bears its fruit in dying.All If we have died with Christ, we shall live with Christ;

if we hold rm, we shall reign with Christ. Amen.

Bishop The gifts of God for the people of God.All Thanks be to God.

Communion of the PeopleIf you know the brokenness of life, its fractures within and its division without, then you haveparticipated in the broken body of Christ and you are invited to share in Communion.Bread, wine and wafers will be available at all communion stations. Gluten-free wafers will be availablein the east alcove.

- at this time there will not be any grape juice

- it is not acceptable to dip (intinct) the bread or wafer into the cup, as this has a greater chance ofspreading infection.

- if you do not wish wine but would like to stand before or touch the base of the cup while the words arebeing said, that is fine.

- Please indicate to the priest if you wish to receive a wafer or bread.

While the communion is being administered, we respectfully ask that you keep the silence —this is a time for quiet prayer and meditation.

During Communion Vinea Mea Electa Francis Poulenc

Vine that I have loved as my own,I it was, who chose thee and planted thee; Why is all thy sweetness turned into gall and bitterness? Why wouldst thou crucify me?I fenced thee sound, I took the hard stones away,Took them from thy path, and built a tower in thy defense.

12

Prayer after CommunionBishop Holy God, source of all love,All on the night of his betrayal

Jesus gave his disciples a new commandment,to love one another as he loved them.Write this commandment in our hearts;give us the will to serve others as he was the servant of all,who gave his life and died for us,yet is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross (CP 386)Text: Isaac Watts (1674 – 1748); Music: Melody Psalmody in Miniature, 2nd Supplement, 1780?;harm. Edward Miller (1731 – 1807); desc. David R. Riley (1947 – ); Rockingham

1. When I survey the wondrous crosson which the Prince of glory died,my richest gain I count but loss, and pour contempt on all my pride.

2. Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast, save in the cross of Christ, my God;all the vain things that charm me most,I sacrice them to his blood.

3. See, from his head, his hands, his feet, sorrow and love ow mingled down;did e’er such love and sorrow meet,or thorns compose so rich a crown?

18

4. Were the whole realm of nature mine, that were an oering far too small;love so amazing, so divine, demands my soul, my life, my all.

The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. The congregation is encouraged to take their parts with boldness.

Narrator Hear the Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John.Jesus went out with his disciples across the Kidron Valleyto a place where there was a garden, which he and his disciples entered. Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, because Jesus often metthere with his disciples. So Judas brought a detachment of soldiers together with police from the chiefpriests and the Pharisees, and they came there with lanterns and torches andweapons. Then Jesus, knowing all that was to happen to him, came forward and askedthem,

Jesus Whom are you looking for?Narrator They answered,Congregation Jesus of Nazareth.Narrator Jesus replied,Jesus I am he.Narrator Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.

When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they stepped back and fell to the ground.Again he asked them,

Jesus Whom are you looking for?Narrator And they said,Congregation Jesus of Nazareth.Narrator Jesus answered,Jesus I told you that I am he. So if you are looking for me, let these men go.Narrator This was to fulll the word that he had spoken,

“I did not lose a single one of those whom you gave me.”Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest’s slave, andcut o his right ear. The slave’s name was Malchus. Jesus said to Peter,

19

Jesus Put your sword back into its sheath. Am I not to drink the cup that the Fatherhas given me?Narrator So the soldiers, their ocer, and the Jewish police arrested Jesus and boundhim.

First they took him to Annas, who was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the highpriest that year.Caiaphas was the one who had advised that it was better to have one person diefor the people.Simon Peter and another disciple followed Jesus. Since that disciple was knownto the high priest, he went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, butPeter was standing outside at the gate. So the other disciple, who was known tothe high priest, went out, spoke to the woman who guarded the gate, and brought Peter in. The womansaid to Peter

Reader You are not also one of this man’s disciples, are you?Narrator Peter said,Reader I am not.Narrator Now the slaves and the police had made a charcoal re because it was cold,

and they were standing around it and warming themselves.Peter also was standing with them and warming himself. Then the high priest questioned Jesus about his disciples and about histeaching. Jesus answered,

Jesus I have spoken openly to the world; I have always taught in synagogues and inthe temple, where all the people come together. I have said nothing in secret. Why do you ask me? Askthose who heard what I said to them; they know what I saidNarrator When he had said this, one of the police standing nearby struck Jesus on theface, saying,Reader Is that how you answer the high priest?Narrator Jesus answered,Jesus If I have spoken wrongly, testify to the wrong. But if I have spoken rightly, whydo you strike me?Narrator Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They asked him,Congregation You are not also one of his disciples, are you?Narrator He denied it and said,Reader I am not.

20

Narrator One of the slaves of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter hadcut o, asked,Reader Did I not see you in the garden with him?Narrator Again Peter denied it, and at that moment the cock crowed.

Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters. It was early in themorning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters,so as to avoid ritual delement and to be able to eat the Passover. So Pilate went out to them and said,

Reader What accusation do you bring against this man?Narrator They answered,Congregation If this man were not a criminal, we would not have handed him over toyou.Narrator Pilate said to them,Reader Take him yourselves and judge him according to your law.Narrator The people replied,Congregation We are not permitted to put anyone to death.Narrator (This was to fulll what Jesus had said when he indicated the kind of death hewas to die.)

Then Pilate entered the headquarters again, summoned Jesus, and asked him,Reader Are you the King of the Jews?Narrator Jesus answered,Jesus Do you ask this on your own, or did others tell you about me?Narrator Pilate replied,Reader I am not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests have handed youover to me. What have you done?Narrator Jesus answered,Jesus My kingdom is not from this world. If my kingdom were from this world,

my followers would be ghting to keep me from being handed over to thepeople. But as it is, my kingdom is not from here.

Narrator Pilate asked him,Reader So you are a king?Narrator Jesus answered,Jesus You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world,to testify to the truth.

21

Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.Narrator Pilate asked him,Reader What is truth?Narrator After he had said this, he went out to the people again and told them,Reader I nd no case against him. But you have a custom that I release someone foryou at the Passover.

Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?Narrator They shouted in reply,Congregation Not this man, but Barabbas!

Narrator Now Barabbas was a bandit. Then Pilate took Jesus and had him ogged. And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and

they dressed him in a purple robe. They kept coming up to him, saying,

Congregation Hail, King of the Jews!Narrator and striking him on the face. Pilate went out again and said to them,Reader Look, I am bringing him out to you to let you know that I nd no case againsthim.Narrator So Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. Pilate saidto them,Reader Here is the man!Narrator When the chief priests and the police saw him, they shouted,Congregation Crucify him! Crucify him!Narrator Pilate said to them,Reader Take him yourselves and crucify him; I nd no case against him.Narrator The people answered him,Congregation We have a law, and according to that law he ought to die because he has

claimed to be the Son of God.Narrator Now when Pilate heard this, he was more afraid than ever. He entered hisheadquarters again and asked Jesus,Reader Where are you from?Narrator But Jesus gave him no answer. Pilate therefore said to him,Reader Do you refuse to speak to me? Do you not know that I have power to releaseyou, and power to crucify you?Narrator Jesus answered him,Jesus You would have no power over me unless it had been given you from above;

22

therefore the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.Narrator From then on Pilate tried to release him, but the people cried out,Congregation If you release this man, you are no friend of the emperor.

Everyone who claims to be a king sets himself against the emperor.Narrator When Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus outside

and sat on the judge’s bench at a place called The Stone Pavement, or inHebrew Gabbatha. Now it was the day of Preparation for the Passover; and it was about noon. Hesaid to the people,

Reader Here is your King!Narrator They cried out,Congregation Away with him! Away with him! Crucify him!Narrator Pilate asked them,Reader Shall I crucify your King?Narrator The chief priests answered,Congregation We have no king but the emperorNarrator Then he handed him over to them to be crucied. So they took Jesus; andcarrying the cross by himself, he went out to what is called The Place of the Skull, which in Hebrew

is called Golgotha. There they crucied him, and with him two others, one on either side, withJesus between them. Pilate also had an inscription written and put on the cross. It read, “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.”

Many of the people read this inscription, because the place where Jesus was cruciedwas near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek. Then the chiefpriests of the people said to Pilate,

Congregation Do not write, “The King of the Jews,” but, “This man said, I am Kingof the Jews.”

Narrator Pilate answered,Reader What I have written I have written.Narrator When the soldiers had crucied Jesus, they took his clothes and divided them

into four parts, one for each soldier. They also took his tunic; now the tunic wasseamless, woven in one piece from the top. So they said to one another,

Congregation Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it to see who will get it.Narrator This was to fulll what the scripture says, “They divided my clothes among

themselves, and for my clothing they cast lots.” And that is what the soldiersdid.

23

Meanwhile, standing near the cross of Jesus were his mother, and his mother'ssister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing besideher, he said to his mother,

Jesus Woman, here is your son.Narrator Then he said to the disciple,Jesus Here is your mother.Narrator And from that hour the disciple took her into his own home.

After this, when Jesus knew that all was now nished, he said (in order to fulllthe scripture),

Jesus I am thirsty.Narrator A jar full of sour wine was standing there.

So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to hismouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said,

Jesus It is nished.Narrator Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

Since it was the day of Preparation, the religious leaders did not want thebodies left on the cross during the sabbath, especially because that sabbath wasa day of great solemnity. So they asked Pilate to have the legs of the crucied men broken and the bodiesremoved. Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the rst and of the other who hadbeen crucied with him. But when they came to Jesus and saw that he wasalready dead, they did not break his legs. Instead, one of the soldiers pierced hisside with a spear, and at once blood and water came out.(He who saw this has testied so that you also may believe. His testimony is true, and he knows that he tells the truth.)These things occurred so that the scripture might be fullled, “None of hisbones shall be broken.”And again another passage of scripture says, “They will look on the one whomthey have pierced.”After these things, Joseph of Arimathea, who was a disciple of Jesus, though asecret one because of his fear of the religious leaders, asked Pilate to let him takeaway the body of Jesus.Pilate gave him permission; so he came and removed his body.

24

Nicodemus, who had at rst come to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, weighing about a hundred pounds. They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it with the spices in linen cloths, according to the burial custom of the Jews. Now there was a garden in the place where he was crucied, and in the garden there was a new tomb in which no one had ever been laid. And so, because it was the Jewish day of Preparation, and the tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.

Deacon & ChoirIt is truly right that with full hearts and minds and voices we should praise the unseenGod, the all-powerful Father, and his only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. For Christ has ransomed us with his blood, and paid for us the price of Adam’s sin toour eternal Father! This is our passover feast, when Christ, the true Lamb, is slain, whose blood consecrates the homes of all believers. This is the time when rst you saved our ancestors:You freed the people of Israel from their slavery and led them dry-shod through the sea. This is the time when Christians everywhere, washed clean of sin and freed from alldelement, are restored to grace and grow together in holiness. This is the time when Jesus Christ broke the chains of death and rose triumphant fromthe grave.Father, how wonderful your care for us! How boundless your merciful love!To ransom a slave you gave away your Son.The power of this holy day dispels all evil, washes guilt away, restores lost innocence, brings mourners joy.O Day truly blessed, when heaven is wedded to earth, and we are reconciled with God!Therefore, heavenly Father, accept this Easter candle, the work of bees and yourservants’ hands, a joyful sacrice of praise, a gift from your most Holy Church. But now we know the praises of this pillar, which glowing re ignites for God'shonour, a re into many ames divided, yet never dimmed by sharing of its light;May it always dispel our darkness, for it is fed by melting wax, drawn out by motherbees to build a torch so precious.May the Morning Star which never sets nd this ame still burning.O Christ, that Morning Star, you came back from the dead, and shed your peaceful light on all creation, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

All Amen.

1. Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness;God hath ransomed Israel into joy from sadness;loosed from Pharaoh’s bitter yoke Jacob’s sons and daughters;led them with unmoistened foot through the Red Sea waters.

2. ‘Tis the spring of souls today: Christ hath burst his prison, and from three days’ sleep in death as a sun hath risen. All the winter of our sins, long and dark, is yingfrom that Light, to whom we give laud and praise undying.

4. Neither might the gates of death, nor the tomb’s dark portal, nor the watchers, nor the seal, hold thee as a mortal:but today amidst the twelve thou dost stand, bestowingthat thy peace which evermore passeth human knowing.

5. Alleluia now we cry to our King immortal, who triumphant burst the bars of the tomb’s dark portal;alleluia, with the Son God the Father praising;alleluia yet again to the Spirit raising.

Sanctus Easter SanctusTrad. 15th c French Carol, adapt. Rupert Lang

44

In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you.In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.On the night he was handed over to suering and death,a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread;and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, “Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you.Do this for the remembrance of me.”After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks,he gave it to them, and said, “Drink this, all of you:this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”Therefore, Father, according to his command,

All we remember his death,we proclaim his resurrection,we await his coming in glory;

Bishop and we oer our sacrice of praise and thanksgiving to you,Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christand his blood of the new covenant.Unite us to your Son in his sacrice, that we, made acceptable in him,may be sanctied by the Holy Spirit.

All Amen.
