Physiotherapy The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) defines physiotherapy as “ a clinical applications in the restoration, maintenance, and promotion of optical physical function.

Physiotherapist not only help people maximizes their mobility, function, and quality of life. They also promotes their physical, psychological, emotional and social wellbeing.

History of Physiotherapy 460 B.C Hippocrates and Galenus were the first practitioners of physiotherapy who promote massage, manual therapy techniques and hydrotherapy to treat people.

1813Per Henrik Ling is the “Father of Swedish Gymnastics” who founded the Royal Central Institute of Gymnastic (RCIG) which helps in manipulation and exercise for those who are ill.

1913The School of Physiotherapy of the University of Otago, New Zealand.

1914The formation of Reed College, Portland, Oregon which graduates “reconstruction aides” that plays a major role during the World War I.

1916The polio epidemic became widespread in the United States and the urge to muscle

testing and muscle re-education to function grew dramatically

1917The United States entered World War I. The army started to recognize the urge to recruit “reconstruction aide” to rehabilitate the injured soldiers.

1921The first physical therapy was published in United States in “ The PT review”

Mary McMillan organized the American Women’s Physical Therapeutic Association ( now called American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) )

1924Georgia Warm Springs Foundation promoted the field by suggesting to use physical therapy as a treatment for polio.

1946Congress adopted the Hill Burton Act to build hospital across the country to increase the public’s access to health care facilities.

Early 1950 A vaccine was finally developed to end polio.

1960Physiotherapist practices in the neuromuscular area expanded significantly with the development of techniques for adults who experienced stroke, cerebral palsy, and disorder of the central nervous system.

1975The Council adopted the Education of All Handicapped Children ( now known as Individual with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) ) to create new approach for physiotherapist within the public school system

1980APTA adopted a new guideline indicating that physical therapy practice independent of practitioner referral was proper as long as it is legal in the state.

1999The Balanced Budget Act of 1997 , the Medicare Prospective Payment System (PPS) and the Medicare Therapy Cap on physical therapy was resolved.

Present The visions we have towards the future :-

recognized by the consumers and other health care professionals as the practitioners of choice to whom consumers have direct access to physiotherapist in all environment.

physiotherapist will be practitioners of choice in patients health networks and hold all privilege of autonomous practice.

physiotherapist may be assisted by physical therapist assistant who are educated and licensed to provide physical therapist directed and supervised components of interventions.
