École Plamondon School Hawks Highlights Summer 2019 Principal’s Note: Happy Summer Time! Summer has arrived and it is time to celebrate each student’s successes, take time to relax, and have free time. Our children have worked hard this year -and there has been amazing growth and accomplishments. Great job! June was a busy month at EPS. Students have gone on field trips, a track and field meet, our grade 12 students had their graduation ceremony, and we celebrated our students with a Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame. We have provided lots of pictures for you to see. Read on to see what we’ve been up to! Sadly, we are saying goodbye to three of our teachers. Mr. Nathaniel Steeves has been with École Plamondon School for six years. He is leaving big shoes to fill as he is an energizer bunny that never seems to lose focus on reaching goals and striving for higher learning and understanding. Mr. Steeves and Frankie, his wife (and soon to be baby) are moving back east to be closer to family. We are sad to see him go but wish him and his family a lifetime of happiness. Ms. Marina Einis has been part of our school for three years. Ms. Einis is a talented musician and great performer. Our students have learned the love of music from her. She too is moving to be closer with family. Good luck in your new home! And Ms. Avalon Verzuu is moving closer to the mountains to be with her family. Although she has only been part of our team for a year and a half, she has brought joy, dance, and energy to our building! Thank you to each of you for your hard work and dedication to our students, school and community. EPS will not be the same without you. We wish you success, happiness, and laughter as you continue your journey. As we say goodbye, we also say hello. We welcome Breanna Coonan, Kadrin Delorme, and Garth Wiebe to our staff. Stay tuned as we provide a full introduction in the September newsletter. Summer is a time to refresh our brains, have fun, and get outside. Sometimes with all of the fun, children can be susceptible to the summer slide. The summer slide is when students forget what they learned or decline in literacy/numeracy ability. The children have worked too hard this year to slip in their levels of accomplishment. This can be prevented by actively reading with your child - this means helping your child by asking them questions that predict what will happen in the story, or what they think a character will do next. You can also ask comprehension questions, like “Why did the character act that way?” “How was the character feeling and why?”. There are also connecting questions: “Can you think of a time

when you felt like that?”, “Did something similar happen to you?” and “How would you feel if that happened to you? What would you do?”. As well, playing card and board games, baking/cooking with children and other activities continue to develop numeracy skills. We have collected a number of activities you can do with your child to help maintain or even increase their literacy and numeracy skills over the summer months and still have fun. There are also lists of activities available in our community and communities close by. Hopefully these ideas will be help your child to continue to learn while having fun!  Thank you for another successful year of working together to support our children in their learning journey. Wishing you a wonderful summer!

Kinder Fun! On June 5th Mrs. E’s Kindergarten class went on a field trip to the Sir Winston Churchill Park!

The children tapped into their five senses to explore their surroundings! Then Mrs. Tredger treated the kids to a refreshing snack and we played

at the beach and at the park!

Field Trips Grade 1 & 2 at the Splash Park

Grade 4 at Lac La Biche Mission The Grade 4 class went to the Lac La Biche Mission for their year end field trip. We saw a lot of historical artifacts and learned what the Mission is, who lived there and what their daily lives were like. We also were able to have lunch and complete a craft. On the way there, we saw a little Bambi on the side of the road. The weather cooperated with us, which was great. Thanks to Mrs. Lundrigan, Mrs. Coonan and Mrs. Plamondon for helping to supervise.  Playschool Field Trip to the Post Office

Ms Colleen and her class enjoyed an adventure in our community with their trip to the Post Office. Thank you to Daniel Henderson for helping!

Amazing Year in the Learning Commons  We’ve had an exciting year in the EPS Learning Commons! Between the expansion of our Makerspace, the addition of our Lego wall and oodles of new books, it’s been unforgettable. Our students are really the heart of our school but the Learning Commons is the place that they are comfortable and love to be in. We are thrilled to be able to have this space for all our students.

We celebrated Literacy Week with guest authors, The Amazing Literacy Race and our Books, Buddies & Biscuits. It's been wonderful watching the students improve their reading skills while having lots of fun while doing it.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Awards Gala

It was amazing to be able to celebrate our students' successes and accomplishments this past Tuesday. We were pleased to host a barbeque for our students and their families. Big thanks to all the staff who helped out.   A huge thank you to Alley Shebeck and Mrs. Plamondon for taking on the decorations which looked amazing!

With school being done for the year many students are just looking for a break. As parents it's important to make sure that while they are taking the time to rest and play. It is especially important that they aren’t losing too much of the skills that they have gained during the past school year. There are lots of ways that you can encourage reading and math skills while being at home or traveling this summer.

1. Read to your child. Have them read to you.

2. Set a good example. When your child sees you reading it sends the message that reading is important.

3. Play games with words or numbers. Scrabble, Boggle, Apples to Apples, Payday and Sum Swamp are all great options to help with reading and math.

4. Visit your local library. They have tons of great books as well as audiobooks, ebooks, board games and Makerspace kits to check out.

5. Cook or bake with your child! It helps reinforce reading and math skills using real life applications.

There are some great apps for reviewing and keeping Math and reading skills sharp through the summer as well.   *Splash Math (suitable for Kindergarten to Grade 5) and Manic Math (Grade 3 & up) are good math practice and review.  *Sight Word Adventures (suitable for Kindergarten to Grade 2), Grammer Jammers (Grade 3-6) and Spelling Monster (Grade 1-4) are really good for reading and writing practice.

 Congratulations EPS Class of 2019!

EPS Graduation Our Grade 12s graduated this past weekend and although we are sad to see them leave us, celebrating our students success is a big part of EPS. Valedictorian Kristina Anfilofieff gave a heartwarming speech highlighting her fellow classmates journey from Kindergarten to Grade 12. Thank you to all our distinguished guests, staff, families and friends who came to honor our students!

Kindergarten Grad

Congratulations to our 40 Kinder Grads. We celebrated with family and friends on June 26th. The Kinders entertained us with songs, dances and poems. Great Day!

It's becoming a tradition at EPS to have the outgoing High School graduates walk our halls with our Kinder grads. They are cheered on by the entire school and staff as they walk our halls for one last time as Hawks.

Grade 8 History Fair

Mrs. Holota’s Grade 8s presented an amazing history fair for the staff and students. Her students put a lot of work into their displays and even came dressed to present! Erin Elliot dressed in a traditional Japanese Kimono as part of her presentation. Well done Grade 8s!
